The first letter of our alphabet is one of the most common in Russian. She especially likes to show off at the end of feminine nouns: hand, foot, moon, cow, etc.
But here is one riddle associated with the letter A. Pick up any dictionary of the Russian language and look through its first pages. You will discover a strange thing: it turns out that the Russian language almost completely does not know words that begin with A. No, of course, there are quite a lot of words in A in general — in the most complete dictionaries, up to two dozen pages will be typed. But almost every one of them indicates that the word is borrowed — either from living languages, or from those that have long since become dead — Latin and ancient Greek.
Originally Russian words beginning with the letter A can be literally counted on the fingers — these are the so-called official words: already, maybe, exclamations — yeah, yeah, and even az and the alphabet. Those who want to add to this list will have to sweat a lot.
What does this actually mean? Can it be said that we are confronted here with a certain defect in our language? In no case.
Russian words starting with A are few, not because our ancestors failed to invent them, but because a special linguistic law operates here. The fact is that there were a lot of ancient Slavic words on A, but the vast majority of them subsequently developed the sound “yot” before A, thus becoming words on I: for example, apple (apple) is the former Proto-Slavic “apple”.
And one more rather interesting thing: the vast majority of loanwords in A are nouns. There are almost no adjectives or verbs. Why?
Yes, precisely because all these words are aliens. Our language took from other nations the names of those objects, concepts, animals that were not found in our country: pineapple, orange, alligator, albatross, halberd, auto-da-fé. As for the names of various qualities of objects or all kinds of actions on them, the language had its own words for them since ancient times, so there was no need for someone else’s dictionary.
