Cursive F: Uppercase And Lowercase

Many people want to learn how to do cursive letters, such as a cursive F, for a variety of reasons. Some cursive letters are easier to do than others and the best approach is to learn them individually. For example, learning the cursive F: uppercase and lowercase can take some time and practice.

If you would like to learn to do a good cursive F, both in uppercase and in lowercase, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will include a comprehensive tutorial on how to do this but also a lot of useful and interesting information about cursive writing.

What Is Cursive Writing?

This may seem like an obvious question, but many people are not sure about what cursive writing is exactly.

One of the reasons that some people get confused by this is that cursive writing is also sometimes referred to by other names such as longhand or script. But, however you refer to it, the main thing to know is that this kind of penmanship has many different styles.

The basic purpose of cursive writing is to join the letters together in such a way that makes the writing seem like it flows. Originally (i.e., before the introduction of typing), cursive was used to make writing considerably faster.

For some reason when I write in cursive, it’s easier and flows better for me to read that when I print. – Ashley Scott

Of course, not all letters need to be joined together because that would make any text too hard to read.

But cursive writings come in many different styles and it can be adapted to any alphabets there are.

Types of Cursive Wrting

Here are the main kinds of cursive writing, that use the Latin alphabet:

  • Ligature: this is the style that connects each one of the letters with lines. This style, common in Greek writing, allows the writer to write without picking up the pencil or pen.
  • Looped: this is the style that uses loops to join the letters. This is the most prevalent style these days and the one we will focus on in this article.
  • Italic: this style was particularly popular in Italy during the Renaissance in the 15th century (hence, the term “italic” that should not be confused with italic typing). This style of writing either uses joins that are not looped or simply no joins.

The origins of cursive writing in the West go back to the Middle Ages when writers went from using quills to dip pens as their main writing tool. The term cursive comes from the Italian word “corsivo” (18th century), which came for the Medieval Latin word “cursivus” deriving from the verb “currere” meaning “to run.”

Did you know that cursive writing was taught in the United States until the 1930s or 1940s? Gradually, though, US colleges stopped teaching cursive writing? The decline of cursive writing has been such that it is now considered a dying art. But, there are still people who want to learn how to write in cursive and if you are reading this article, you are one of them.

Warming Up

Before you attempt to write the letter F in cursive (or any other letter, for that matter), the first thing that you will need to do is to warm up.

There are several warming up exercises that can be done before you begin. Do not think of those warming up exercises as a waste of time. Investing time in warming up will make learning to write in cursive a lot easier. In fact, you will probably save time if you warm up well.

Find a practice sheet on like and print out several copies. Then practice a simple upward stroke for a couple of lines. Always start your upward strokes from the bottom line (in fact, just above it), making a slight curve and then going all the way up to the top line.

Once you have practiced the upward stroke, practice making a curve stroke between the middle line and the bottom one. Do this also for a couple of lines until you have mastered it. You are now ready for cursive F.

Lowercase F

You should always begin with lowercase letters. But, before you do a lowercase F, you should try doing an h. Why? Because it is easier, and you will learn the basic strokes to do a lowercase F.

Here is how you do a lowercase H. Start from the bottom line and make a stroke that goes all the way up to the top line. Then take the stroke around slightly at the top in a leftward direction and bring it back to the bottom line. Cross over the line near the bottom and trace an arc shape to the middle line. Then, make a stroke that goes all the way down to the bottom line, ending with a little curl.

You should practice the letter h a few times until you have mastered it (three or four times should be enough). Once you have mastered the lowercase h, you should be able to do f, just by making some slight modifications to it. You should also be able to write cursive b, k, and l easily.

Uppercase F

Once you feel comfortable enough with the lowercase alphabet, you should move on to the uppercase alphabet. But, let us focus on the letter F.

Letter L is the easiest to draw, so you should start with it before you attempt the letter F.

Start from the top line and then arc down and around in a rightward direction, making something close to a very rough o shape. Then, go down on a stroke all the way to the bottom line, but slanting to the right. Once you reach the bottom line, make an up and around curl. Then, take the line out to the right a make a slight curve.

Make several attempts until you have mastered it. Then, move on to uppercase R by starting at the top line and making a downward stroke all the way down to the bottom line, but making a slight arc to the left and ending with a curl. Then, lift up your pen or pencil and place it in the middle line. From there, make a curve up with one stroke and around to the left all the way to the top line. Then make a downward curve to the middle line. And a curve to the right and all the way down to the bottom line, ending with a nice curl.

Practice R a few times and then make the necessary changes to write the uppercase F. You should also be able to use what you have learned in order to make capital B, D, I, J, P, and T.

How To Learn to Write the Cursive Letter F [2022]

by David Bordallo

Cursive F is a font that is designed to be used for writing in a flowing, cursive style. It is often used in conjunction with other cursive fonts, such as cursive g and cursive h.

Cursive f has many different features that make it distinct from other fonts. For example, the letters are often joined together in a flowing manner, and the strokes of the letters are often curved rather than straight. This gives cursive f a more organic and natural look than other fonts.

Cursive f is also generally more ornate than other fonts, with more elaborate detailing on the letters. This can make it an ideal choice for decorative purposes, such as when creating invitations or other formal documents.

If you’re looking for a font that will add a touch of elegance to your writing, cursive f is a great option to consider.

What Is An F In Cursive?

The F in cursive is created by starting at the top line and making a small loop. From there, bring the stroke down to the bottom line, making a small tail off to the left side. Finally, cross the F in the center with a single line.

Why Is Cursive No Longer Taught?

There are multiple reasons for why cursive is no longer taught. One reason is that with the technological advancement of keyboards and typing, there is less of a need to know how to write in cursive. In addition, due to the fast-paced nature of society, people are generally more focused on efficiency rather than style. As a result, fewer people see the need to learn how to write in cursive. Finally, some experts believe that teaching cursive can actually interfere with a child’s ability to learn how to read and write in print form, which is the more commonly used form of writing.

Is Cursive Dying?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated. On the one hand, it is true that cursive writing has seen a steep decline in schools. It isn’t a requirement for many children to learn them before they can graduate from elementary school. However, on the other hand, there are still many people who value cursive writing and believe that it is an important skill to learn. So while it may be true that cursive writing is in decline, it is not necessarily dying out completely.

How Do I Teach My 4 Year Old Cursive?

The best way to teach cursive writing to your child is to teach how to trace first. This can be done with a simple piece of paper and a pencil. Give them more material for practice by providing them with different worksheets that have tracing exercises on them. Teach lower-case letters first, as these are generally easier for children to learn. Categorize the alphabets so that they can learn them in a systematic way. Practice in a large space so that your child has enough room to move their hands and fingers around freely. Move according to child’s speed and let them take breaks in between so that they don’t get frustrated. Learning with fun is always the best way, so try to make the whole experience enjoyable for your little one.

At What Age Should A Child Learn Cursive?

Cursive writing is usually taught in third grade, when students are about 8 years old. At this age, most children are assumed to possess the skills necessary to master cursive writing. However, some children may struggle with certain aspects of cursive writing, such as making the proper letter formations or connecting the letters correctly. In these cases, it may be beneficial to start teaching cursive a bit earlier, around first or second grade. Ultimately, it is up to the teacher or parent to decide when a child is ready to learn cursive.

Should My Child Learn Cursive?

It depends on the individual child and what their needs and abilities are. However, some benefits of learning cursive include: 1) it can help train the brain to learn functional specialization; 2) it can improve memory; and 3) it can improve fine motor skills. So, if a child is struggling with print handwriting, learning cursive may help them to be able to write more legibly.

Tips to Teach Loop Letters: Cursive b, e, f, h, k, and l

Here we are covering how to teach cursive b, cursive e, cursive f, cursive h, cursive k, and cursive l. These loop letters are all connected because of their similar pencil movements that make the letter. You can add these tips and strategies to teach cursive letter writing. Today, you’ll find creative activities and tips for teaching formation of cursive loop letters. Cursive loop letters are those ones that start with a loop line up. Lowercase cursive letters b, e, f, h, k, and l are loop letters.

Writing cursive letters in order with a specific strategy is very helpful in teaching proper letter formation in a way that is logical.

What are loop letters?

Loop letters are a set of cursive letters that all have a loop in the initial formation of the letter. These loop letters include:

  • cursive b
  • cursive e
  • cursive f
  • cursive h
  • cursive k

After the initial loop, or upswing of the pencil, the pencil moves back down toward the baseline and moves into another pattern to form the rest of the letter.

This cursive letter family is a group of cursive letters that are formed with similar pencil strokes.

Breaking letters down into cursive families can help students learn cursive letter formation. Below, you will find information on how to teach cursive letter formation of “tree letters”.

This post is part of our 31 day series on teaching cursive. You’ll want to check out the How to Teach Cursive Writing page where you can find all of the posts in this series.

For more ways to address the underlying skills needed for handwriting, check out the handwriting drop-down tab at the top of this site.

Motor Plan for Formation of “Loop” Letters

When instructing students in forming these loopy cursive letters, start by outlining a cursive letter lesson plan of activities. You can read more about cursive letter lesson plans here. Students can start out with learning the cursive letters that make up the Loop Family.

Start by practicing a series of upward curves across a line of paper. This can look like a string of cursive letter loopy l‘s joined together. When practicing the curve of the cursive letter l motions in a strand across a page, set the child’s awareness on height and the start/stop point of each curve.

Most important is the width of the loop. Instruct students to draw the lines with proper width of the loop. A wide loop will make the letter inefficient and difficult to connect to other letters.

When beginning with cursive instruction, students should concentrate on an upward curve from the base line to the middle line or top line of the paper.

This loop occurs in the Loop Family letters: b, e, f, h, k, and l.

Fine Motor Activity for Practicing Cursive Loop Letters

Try this activity to practice the loops of the loopy letters.   Use washable markers to draw loops on a paper towel. (Adding pencil lines for writing spaces before starting can be a big help for addressing loop and letter size!)

To the loops, add drops of water and watch the colors expand.

Be sure to talk to the child about loop height and width as these aspects to cursive writing will carry the most weight when it comes to legibility.

For a colorful work of art, trace over the marker loops with additional colored markers.
Read more about this cursive handwriting activity and others here on The OT Toolbox.

Activities for Teaching Cursive Loop Letters

Use short phrases to instruct cursive formation. Phrases like “Loop up to the top line” or “Loop up to the middle line” can help.

Try these sensory activities to teach cursive handwriting loop letters: Affiliate links are included below.

Write with glitter or colored glue on lined paper. Allow the glue to dry. Students can feel the raised lines of the loops.

Draw with wet chalk on a chalkboard or sidewalk. Be sure to add guide lines first to address loop height.

Create different sized loops using wikki stix. These are a great tool for getting the hands in on the fine motor action with a tactile experience that promotes motor planning and kinesthetic learning.

How to Teach Cursive b

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive letter b:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the top line and back to the baseline.
  3. Swing up to the middle line.
  4. Tow rope away to connect.

Lowercase cursive letter b is a tow rope letter. These are letters that connect at the middle line. They change the beginning of the letter they connect to.

It can be helpful to practice letters that are commonly connected to letter b such as ba, be, bi, bl, bo, br, bu, and by.

How to Teach Cursive e

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive e:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the middle line and back to the baseline.
  3. Loop away to connect.
  4. Instruct students to stop at the middle line.

How to Teach Cursive

f

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive letter f:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the top line and back to the baseline.
  3. Continue straight down past the baseline.
  4. Curve right and up to the baseline, connecting at the strait part of the tail.
  5. Swing away to connect.

Note about cursive letter f– This letter requires the pencil lines to close the tail into a “bunny ear” type of loop. Think about drawing a tall bunny ear. The lines create a long, loop type of shape that does not cross like a the loop on the top part of the f.

Rather, the curved motion has a potential for an opening. It’s important for students to close the tail of the f. Likewise, it’s important to keep the closure point at the baseline. If the closure point creeps up above the baseline or has an opening, the letter can potentially look like a cursive b.

Work on loop formation and motor control for closure points in multi-sensory activities such as with sandpaper or in writing trays.     b, e, f, h, k, and l.

How to Teach Cursive

h

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive letter h:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the top line and back to the baseline.
  3. Pause.
  4. Re-trace back up to bump to the middle line.
  5. Continue over the bump to the baseline.
  6. Swing away to connect.

How to Teach Lowercase Cursive

k

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive letter k:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the top line and back to the baseline.
  3. Pause.
  4. Re-trace back up to bump to the middle line.
  5. Continue over the bump and pull back into the loop.
  6. Add a kickstand to the baseline.
  7. Swing away to connect.

Use these sensory activities to practice cursive letter k:

  • Creative Cursive Writing Practice
  • Textured Cursive Lines
  • Cursive Lines Art

Note about cursive letter k– This letter requires the pencil lines to close the bump at the loop. It’s important for students to pull the pencil lines in and to close the bump.

If the closure point doesn’t close at the loop, the letter can potentially look like a cursive h.

Work on loop formation and motor control for closure points in multi-sensory activities such as with sandpaper or in writing trays.

How to Teach Cursive

l

Use the following verbal prompts to teach lowercase cursive letter l:

  1. Start at the baseline.
  2. Loop up to the top line and back to the baseline.
  3. Loop away to connect.

A few tips for teaching cursive loop letters

It would be very difficult to teach cursive handwriting only by verbal instruction. Carryover and accuracy would suffer!

A visual component and slow teaching strategies are very important. Try these tips to help with learning cursive loop letters.

  • Use large motor movements when starting out with cursive instruction.
  • Teach each letter individually and for short periods of time each day.
  • Practice cursive letters in multiple sensory experiences, including shaving cream on desks, writing trays, in goop, with play dough or slime, etc.
  • Practice near copy work using a visual cue like these free cursive letter flashcards.
  • Practice each letter in a group focusing on one letter at a time. When a new letter is introduced, continue with previously learned letters.

How handwriting changed in Russia. Cursive writing from the 17th to the 20th centuries

Reading the texts of past centuries is quite difficult without special preparation and banal experience. To begin with, look at the alphabet of Russian cursive writing of the 15th-18th centuries.

Surprisingly, all the spellings presented were used in the letter! In our time, at school they teach only two variants of writing a letter — lowercase and uppercase. In ancient cursive writing, the “capital” letter was literally large, that is, a certain variant was chosen and increased in size.

XVII century

In describing this period, we are content not with our own examples (we used materials from the book by I. S. Belyaev «Practical course in the study of ancient Russian cursive writing for reading manuscripts of the XV-XVIII centuries», 1907).

1695

How did he walk their great Sovereigns as military people

With cases in those days it was not so simple. But we are not talking about grammar, so we will omit this moment.

The words themselves can be broken down into letters using the alphabet above.

As you can see, the offer consists of two levels. Some letters go above the line. These are «retractable» letters. Often they represent several letters at once. For example, in the last word, the portable «l» is read as [l]. The double letters in the words “he” and “walked” will be implicit for a modern person. Remote «n» and «l» can be replaced by «n» and «l».

The word «Sovereigns» is depicted using a title. This is a superscript character that was placed above the whole word and meant that several letters were missing in it (up to all vowels). This technique was used for very common words that can be recognized without some letters. Some scribes used the title in rare words, which caused difficulty in reading even among contemporaries. Also, the title was placed above the letters, if they were supposed to mean numbers.

1695

Both over the inhabitants and over the military people

This sentence uses remote «d»; «l» as «l»; «d» again. The extension «m» with two dots looks very cute and means the combination «mi».

1642

And the Sovereign, Tsar I, Grand Duke Mikhailo Fedorovich of All Russia indicated that his sovereign decree

Let’s go back half a century, and the text becomes even more complicated. There are fewer and fewer spaces, there are more and more extended letters and incomprehensible squiggles.

Skozal in the past de in the 129th year

And here is the mentioned letter reckoning. Let’s go back to the alphabet. The letter «Rtsy» means the number 100; «Kako» — 20; «Fita» — 9. The value of the whole number is equal to the sum of ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. It turns out 129. The thousandth component is omitted here, and in this case it is not one thousand, but as many as seven. Before Peter I (or rather, until 1700 according to the Christian chronology) in Russia there was the 7208th year «from the creation of the world.»

By the way, the documents of the 18th century already used numbers, but the thousandth component was also often omitted — apparently out of habit. Let’s go to it and move on.

XVIII c. no, only the letter «Xi» did not meet us. «Peter Ale- ks -eevich» — the highlighted combination is depicted by this letter.

Then, slowly but surely cursive began to transform dramatically. Peter’s reform gave echoes in the use of a new type of manuscript by the middle of the century.

Toward the end of the century, we see something similar.

1775

1795

1795th year of September 1st day 1794th…

As can be seen from the last two images, by the end of the century scribes got rid of many different ways of writing the same letter. Moreover, “c”, “e”, “g” remained unusual for us; the letter «On» is used (the last word of the third line from the bottom) and other minor difficulties. The rest of the inscriptions are intuitive, in our opinion.

Here the handwriting is even clearer. The eye is pleased with the clear separation of words with spaces. There are more and more professional scribes, which gives rise to a new problem — the emergence of free transformations and individual ways of writing letters.

1811

The peculiarity in the style is dictated by the use of the pen. I wonder what impact the ubiquity of computer printing will have on handwriting in the future…

1857

Zachary. Cossack Nikolai Ivanov Pukhlyakov of the Razdorsky village of Razdorskoy and his legal wife Fyokla Pavlova, both of the Orthodox confession

Of course, handwriting differed from person to person even in those days. This is especially noticeable just after the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Having learned in the old fashioned way, clerks were reluctant to change their habits as they grew older. Young people, on the contrary, allowed themselves more liberties.

XX century

1910

Andrey. Police officer Feodor Andreev Viktorov of the Semikarakorsk stanitsa and his lawful wife Elena Egorova, both Orthodox

Here, capital letters familiar to us from the school bench are already easily read. Unless «Fita» instead of «F» in the name Fedor can cause some confusion.

Sample letters should not be taken as standards for certain periods. As now, in those days, each clerk had an individual handwriting.

Images of Russian writing: cursive

Old Russian cursive is the latest in time of occurrence, but at the same time the most nationally original type of writing in Pre-Petrine Rus. With regard to cursive writing, right up to the last stages of its development in the space of ancient Russian written culture, we can least of all talk about any external influences and borrowings.

The fundamental difference between cursive writing and the charter and semi-character was the rejection of regularity and geometricity in the styles of letters and in the construction of the text as a whole.

Go to the Album

The beginning of the development of Russian cursive, apparently, should be attributed to the end of the XIV century. — XV century, when in the writing of acts and letters, fluent irregular semi-authoritative «handwriting» appears and spreads, in which, to varying degrees, features begin to appear that will later form the appearance of cursive writing.

As examples of such a letter, one can cite a number of letters of the 20s — 80s. 15th century from the collection of the OR RNB: Complimentary letter OSAG op. I. By the 16th century. cursive writing developed as an independent type of ancient Russian writing isolated from others. The development of cursive writing in the 16th — 17th centuries. follows the path of an increasingly vivid manifestation of its originality in relation to other types of ancient Russian writing, reaching its climax in the 17th century. This originality consists in the following main features:0003

I. Wide use of styles dominated by curvilinear asymmetrical elements.

These styles are often carried far beyond the line of the line (into the interline area or on the margins) and may look like decorative strokes (see, for example, the styles «A» and «D» in tables 1a and 1b). The use of enlarged styles, including in the middle of words. (See, for example, the “K” inscriptions in Table 1a): Compared with the semi-character, there is a noticeable increase in the number of variants of writing written characters within one handwriting, especially in monuments of developed calligraphic cursive writing of the 17th century. III.

The systematic use of ligature (connected) and monogram (cross) styles.

In a cursive letter of the 16th century. connected styles are used frequently, but still sporadically. In the 17th century, especially in the most calligraphic «handwriting», coherent styles often predominate. At the same time, there is no strict regulation that defines such styles: both lowercase letters can be combined with each other, and lowercase with superscript.

In the 16th — 17th centuries, cursive writing was used as an act writing (see, for example: letters of the 16th century — Charter of OSAG op. I. No. 104, 1534; Letter of charter of OSAG op. I. No. 134 of 1534 , loan bondage collection Zinchenko No. 46 1569; XVII century — Borrowed bondage collection Zinchenko No. 191 1611 and Letter of Compliment OSAG op. II. No. 1082, 1657-1659), and book (see. for example: handwritten books of the 16th century — Stoglav Erm.82, Sudebnik Q.II.118; XVII century — Service Soph.1151; Official Sof.1154, 1675). For Old Russian cursive writing of the 17th century. characterized by highly artistic samples of writing, which are real monuments of calligraphic art. Such highest artistic manifestations of cursive writing, revealing all its rich pictorial potential, are alphabet scrolls (see, for example, OSRK F. III. 131) and luxurious royal letters (see, for example: Charter of the OSAG op. II. No. 817, 1648 G. ).

From the middle of the 17th century. The Muscovite state is experiencing the strongest influence of Western Russian culture, one of the manifestations of which was the appearance of handwriting, which was formed under the influence of the so-called «Kyiv cursive writing», the development and distribution of which is associated with the activities of the Kyiv school under the Epiphany Brotherhood. In the first quarter of the XVII century. this training center adopted the program of Catholic schools. The type of writing that was formed in the Kyiv school acquired the features characteristic of italic Latin writing: a significant degree of connectedness of lowercase letters, rounded continuous styles, including those directly borrowed from Latin writing. It is significant that handwriting, approaching in character to Kyiv cursive writing and marking the last stage in the history of the development of Old Russian cursive writing, belongs to the advanced part of the elite of the Muscovite state of the late 17th — early 18th centuries. A striking example of the writing of representatives of this environment can be the handwriting of a Russian diplomat of the era of Princess Sophia, and later one of the closest associates of Peter I, Fyodor Alekseevich Golovin (see a sample of his letter — Pogodin’s autographs F.588, op. II, No. 34).

The history of ancient Russian cursive writing ends in the first half of the 18th century, when the process of deep westernization of the entire cultural life of the Russian state begins. These phenomena were also reflected in the development of writing: a type of cursive was formed, which one of the largest researchers in the history of the Russian font, A.G. Shitsgal, proposed to call it «civil cursive» (which makes it possible to separate it from Old Russian cursive). Civil cursive is characterized by simplified rounded styles, superscripts disappear, the variability of styles is reduced (see, for example, Pogodin’s autographs F.588, op. II, No. 21 and No. 22.

In the future, throughout the XVIII century. civil cursive writing (especially its dress form — writing petitions, tray copies of scientific and literary works, etc.) will be strongly influenced by Western European English cursive, moving on to the beginning. second quarter. 19th century into Russian cursive writing of the modern type.

Features of cursive writing. The history of the development of cursive writing

The history of the development of cursive writing

test

Cursive letters, partially interconnected, differ from the letters of other types of writing in their light outline. The letters were largely made with elongations. Compared to the semi-charter, cursive writing is characterized by:

abbreviation of words;

moving letters to the top of the line;

omission of etymological -ъ, -ь;

general simplification of spelling;

lack of big yus ?, Greek letters;

diacritical accent marks for aspiration and stress;

· variation of letter shapes, depending on their proximity;

combination of letters in a word;

sweeping pen strokes.

A characteristic feature of cursive writing is the continuous writing of some of the letters, as well as the placement of some of them above the line (“external” letters). The writing of individual letters is not strictly regulated. For some letters, different spellings were used depending on whether they fit into the line or were portable. Reading of texts is hampered by the fact that for the most part the words were not divided among themselves, and it is often necessary to dismember a continuous text according to the meaning. Punctuation marks were practically absent, capital letters were sometimes placed at the beginning of the text, sometimes they were not expressed at all.

In addition to the letters that exist in the modern alphabet, some others were also used in old texts: “zelo” (read as “z”), “ot” (read as “o”), “yat” (originally denoted a special sound, later read like “e”), “xi” (read like “ks”), “psi” (read like “ps”), “fita” (read like “f”), “izhitsa” (usually read like “and” , but sometimes used instead of «in»). There were no very clear grammatical rules, so “i” and “i”, “e” and “yat”, “f” and “fita”, and sometimes even “s” and “z” freely replace each other. A hard sign at the end of words was not always placed, especially often it was omitted after prepositions and after extended consonants (the latter also applies to a soft sign). Sometimes after the portable consonants the vowel was also dropped, in particular in the case ending «go». It was customary to write a number of words in an abbreviated form (this way of writing comes from the charter). In the case of an abbreviation, a special sign was supposed to be placed above the word — “titlo” in the form of a wavy line (“erik”) or arch (“camora”). “Titlo” meant that vowels were omitted in the word, and sometimes also one or two consonants, for example, “prince” (prince), “knga” (book), “mnetr” (monastery), “tsrkv” (church), “ chlvk «(man),» nne «(now),» flicker «(mercy), etc.

At the turn of the XIV — XV centuries. a new type of writing appears — cursive, which has received the main development of various kinds in business papers. There is no doubt that cursive developed from a semi-scriptural style. Therefore, comparing semi-statutory and cursive letters, one can see a great similarity between them. Because of this, we have some transitional types of lettering in a fluent business semi-charter, approaching cursive. Such a similarity can be noted for the letters a, b, c, e, e, i, p, h. But at the same time, new letter styles appear. So, along with the letter a, similar to the statutory one, there is a with a long tail and a in the form of the Greek «alpha».

The letter в takes, as a rule, the modern style.

On the whole, the early cursive is still not very different from the fluent semi-ustav. Almost always, each letter of cursive writing is written separately, as in a fluent semi-charter, although you can notice a freer, sweeping spelling of letters. There are more and more portable letters. Portable letters under the title are especially characteristic of this time, while the letters are written quite clearly. Extended letters above the line will eventually become very widespread. This can be explained, on the one hand, by the acceleration of writing, and on the other hand, by saving the writing material — parchment or paper.

Cursive writing was especially widespread in the 16th century, when it began to be used in business writing when compiling scribe books, civil status registers, in customs affairs, legal proceedings, in private correspondence, etc. However, up to the 18th century. does not lose its significance and semi-statutory writing, which is mainly used in book writing, that is, in monuments of a literary, journalistic nature.

In the 16th century cursive writing acquires features that distinguish it from the previous types of writing — charter and semi-charter. First of all, the letter «quick custom» is characterized by a loss of distinctness in the graphics of letters, breadth, and sweeping writing. The letters became hooked, lost their proportionality. There is a connection in the writing of letters. At first, this is noticeable in the introduction of ligatures. Later, in the second half of the XVII — XVIII century. the coherent spelling of letters in words becomes, as it were, the rule. There are also a lot of large letters that go up and down the line.

In cursive 16th century. portable letters and uplifts (removal of letters upwards above the line without separation from the lower case) began to be very widely used. Handwriting gradually acquires individual features, which are especially distinguishable from the 17th century.

In Russian cursive writing of the 16th century. some features in the graphics of letters can be noted.

First of all, the use of the letter v in the form of a triangle or quadrangle, very reminiscent of the letter d, is becoming widespread.

The letter e is increasingly taking on the form of the Greek e.

The letter zh has many variants, and in the second half of the century there is zh written in one stroke, without taking the pen off the paper.

The letter z is usually written in the form of a triple, but sometimes there is an additional hook that makes the letter look like «xi».

The letter k often looks like two sticks.

A feature of cursive writing in the 16th century. the use of large letters and ligatures that go sharply beyond the line should be considered.

Time of complete approval of cursive writing — XVII century. A great variety in the inscription of both lowercase and extended letters, the desire for coherence of writing within words, the division of the text into words, new writing techniques lead to an increasing manifestation of the individual character of cursive writing. Therefore, to read cursive XVII century. pretty hard. And it is not surprising that the manuscript, written in cursive, remained «a letter with seven seals.» Therefore, any zemstvo deacon was an important figure in the village: after all, the correct reading of any order received from the center or from the governor depended on him.

In cursive 17th century. there are some new features in the graphics of letters.

The letter k is most often written in the form of two parallel vertical sticks. In this regard, it is necessary to note the combination of the letter k with the letter c. The last one in the 17th century. often written in the form of a vertical stick, straight or somewhat concave. Three adjacent sticks in the text should usually be read as sk. Misreading this combination can lead to distortion of the text. So, the inability to read this ligature led to the fact that for a long time they could not find the house on Nemetskaya Street in Moscow, in which A. S. Pushkin was born, since instead of “Skvortsov’s house” they read “Shvartsov’s house”. According to the figurative expression of the great connoisseur of cursive writing S. V. Bakhrushin, one who learns to read the combination ck will soon learn to read cursive writing itself.

When reading a combination of three sticks, most often you cannot read ks, since the letter “xi” was usually used to designate ks.

In the 17th century, the most common styles of the letters u and ya were established in the form of o and a with hooks (or squiggles) at the top. At the same time, in the XVII century. we meet yus small, which begins to undergo a kind of graphic evolution, gradually approaching the modern letter i.

the letter in the line

the letter is placed at the top

There are a number of difficulties with the letter «B» because:

1) It is often placed at the top of the word and looks unusual or «O»

3) The letter can be positioned both vertically and horizontally

D one of those letters, reading of which, as a rule, does not cause any special problems
Y One of those letters that have many different spellings, from the type of letter we are used to, to a sign that looks more like the number 2

here we see two different letters that read like «E» standing in one word, as well as the letter «I»

causes certain difficulties in reading due to the fact that the letters «I» look like it , «U» and even «V».
F has its own features in the perception: it is often made up the words, it is written sweepingly and carelessly
s and z letters Z «Z» I had two: «The Phy Earth». It is worth reading about this in more detail in any article on the topic of Cyrillic or in Belyaev
The difficulty in reading this letter is due to the fact that it is often carried to the top of the word,

as is the case with the words «prince» and «district» (see example 1 and 2) , and in the fourth example it strongly resembles any other letter

I and I

With these letters, as a rule, there are no big problems when reading.

The only thing, sometimes «and» is similar to «k» and «x»

K In writing, this letter looks like two sticks, brackets, or the letter «and», as in the example with the Kikinsky camp.

The main thing is just to remember this, and then reading this letter will not be difficult

L

This letter is usually easily recognizable.

Sometimes the previous letter is added to it, as in example 2, in the surname SaBlin (y)

M

Perhaps one of the most easily recognizable letters until it was taken up. As soon as they took it out — there may be options

N

in this example we see several options for writing the letter «H» in one sentence

This letter is often easy to read, but sometimes it can be confused with «I». The difficulty may also arise when this letter is made up
O The only letter that I leave without comment and examples
p This letter does not cause much difficulty when reading Р The difficulty associated with this letter appears only if it is carried upward,
as in this word

Causes difficulties. The type of «donut» is unusual for modern man.

H Causes a number of difficulties. It is written in a sweeping and careless way, it can be large both at the beginning of a word and in the middle. Often carried up
Ш, Ш Does not cause difficulties I would like to believe that the reader of this site knows that in pre-revolutionary Russia there was an orthography different from ours, modern, and every word that ended in a consonant, for example: house, table, fence, confectioner, elephant, etc., must necessarily was to end with a firm sign.

Read about this article on the topic «Pre-revolutionary spelling»

I will not dwell on this letter for a long time, I will only say that it is either written or not written at the end of a word, and it may look different for one scribe

Ы Not the most easy to read letter because of its unusual appearance, reminiscent of the Latin L. As can be seen from example 2, it may look different for one scribe on adjacent lines in the same word. But most often, it looks like L. It is impossible to get used to this, and this letter is very difficult to read

For some reason, this book is especially sorry for me. Although they probably did the right thing.

Some kind of originality, originality, Russianness from our letter just left with her.

Exists
many different cursive options. We invite you to meet one of
them. Its author is Evgeny Sergeevich Gruzdev.
And it all started in 1949, when
the future author was only 19 years old. After reading the tutorial
N.N. Sokolova in shorthand, Evgeny Sergeevich began work on the creation of shorthand Cyrillic. For a year and a half were compiled
dozens of options. At the end of 1950, the first thoroughly
modified version of the alphabet. With the help of the developed cursive writing, the author completed
evening technical school, evening institute. She is still using it. After leaving for
retired Evgeny Sergeevich developed the second version of shorthand Cyrillic, which is proposed.
O
cursive E.S. Gruzdev was written by many newspapers: “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, newspapers of Moscow State University
, UDN, «Department», etc. We hope that students of all universities will be interested
get acquainted with the method of quick writing E.S. Gruzdev.
Any letter
involves hand movement. There are fewer of these movements in cursive writing than in normal writing.
letter. This is the whole “zest”. In cursive, every letter of a regular letter
corresponds to the simplest graphic sign.
Let’s analyze the basic concepts,
necessary for learning cursive.

Letter
written sign, graphic designation of sound. It is made in one move.
hands (pen, pencil) from top to bottom.
Letters in words need to somehow
unite. And here you can not do without carrying bundles.
Link is a hand movement
(pen, pencil) from bottom to top (from letter to letter).
Turn off
letters to a bunch, and vice versa, can be sharp (sharp), smooth (blunt) and
loop (middle). The sharper it is, the faster.
One measure is
the usual size of vowels (except for “y”) is three to four
millimeters.
Two measures is the usual size of consonants (“b”, “c”,
“e”, “h”) equal
respectively six to eight millimeters, i.e. the consonant should be like
at least twice the vowel.

Nature
gave a person only nine simple elements of writing, the tenth is NOT
GIVEN.

From
nine normal elements (see diagram) six are harmonic (N1, N3,
N4, N5, N8, N9) and three — non-harmonic (N2, N6, N7).
Harmonic
oscillations occurring according to the law of sine and cosine are called. Harmonic
letters are written at a speed of six or more letters per second without distortion. Except
element number 3 — it is written as slowly as inharmonious ones.
Non-harmonic elements at speed
letters more than three letters per second are distorted (deformed). Most susceptible
distortion of the letter «g». But when increasing or decreasing the size of the letter “g”, it
becomes more harmonious.

Therefore, in
in practical writing, one measure is replaced by half a measure, and
consonants express a two-dimensional «g». Special mention should be made of the letter “o”. This is the worst element of the letter. The letter «o» is incompatible with the simplest elements of shorthand
letters, because in it, the LINK does not go to the next letter, but is part of the letter
«o» as the second half, i.e. “o” is equal to two letters in our new sense (“o”= ( + )). All Cyrillic and Latin letters, which include
includes “o” and “r”, are non-harmonic,
unsuitable for fast writing.
How were the graphic signs chosen for
vowel marks? Due to the fact that there are only ten vowels in the Cyrillic alphabet, and
“e” and “ё” have the same graphics, it is advisable
vowels are denoted by nine simple one-dimensional elements. From a letter
“and” we leave half, turning it 180 degrees in the plane of the sheet, we get
graphic sign for «s». The letter «e» is left without
changes, rotate it 180 degrees in the plane of the sheet, it turns out “e”. From
the letter “y” we leave the second element, reduce it to one measure and give it to the letter
“y”, rotate this element 180 degrees in the plane of the sheet, this
graphic symbol for the letter «u». Leave the letter «ё»
unchanged, but if necessary, replace two dots with a dash above the letter «e»,
as is customary in shorthand. The letter «o» will be denoted by a vertical
dash. The letter «a» — one-dimensional «g» (as the envelope of the letter «a»). We turn
one-dimensional «r» around the vertical axis by 180 degrees (it turned out the Latin
«s») is the graphic symbol for the letter «i».
Consonants
letters are denoted by two-dimensional elements. At the same time, each pair of consonants is given
one element, but the voiced consonant is indicated by the element going up, and
voiceless consonant — the same element, but going down. Arrangement of elements
it is more convenient to start with the letter «l», designating it with the Latin «L». We give the letter «r» the same element, but written down. turning
«L» 180 degrees in
sheet plane, we get a graphic sign for the letter «m». the same element, but
written down will mean «n». In this way,
sonorants «m», «n», «l», «r»
combined with the same graphics.
Now let’s denote the most obvious letters: from
«d» leave the second half and write it up. For
designations of the letter «t» we use the same sign, but written down. letter «g»
Let’s represent the two-dimensional «g». We give the letter «k» the same sign, but write it down. From
«in» leave the first half. For the letter «f»
use the same sign, but write it down. From «sh»
take one third, make it two-dimensional and write down. The letter «g» is denoted by the same
sign, but write it up; «c» will be represented by Latin «s» written down. We give the letter «z» the same sign, but
write it up. The letter «b» is denoted by an element resembling a hook. Letter
«p» — the same sign, but written down. At «u» we leave the last part of «u».
The letter «x» is depicted in the form of a vertical stick,
going up. The letter «h» is a vertical stick going down. We form the letter «c» from a vertical stick going up with the help of
additional bow at the top. From «y» remains only
hat «?» A solid sign is indicated by a dash above the line. soft sign —
dash under the line.

hurry up to master cursive, do it gradually: start with substitutions in words
vowels (since remembering the signs corresponding to them is easy), consonants «g» — «k»,

start with the most difficult).
At the first stage of mastering cursive writing, we recommend
write letters in the same way in all positions.
For capital letters,

Alexander Boyarsky’s interview for Calligrafest 2019 — Calligrafest — festival of calligraphy and lettering

About self-discipline

I’m an absolute lazy person, but I have to keep myself in order to achieve good results. I believe that daily many hours of training is part of my art. As any professional musician starts his day by playing scales, so I start my training not with letters and words, but with straight lines, diagonals, verticals, horizontals and circular elements. In fact, I advise everyone to start with simple exercises.

Warming up the hand before work

Of course, there is a need to warm up. At first, the hand is completely wooden, but after half an hour I begin to feel the line much thinner. For example, if I sit down to write a letter right now, without warming up, then it is clear that I will write pretty well. But it will not be the same letter that I can write after one or two hours of practice.

On the development and choice of style

Technique is being refined, and texts are being improved. For example, for several months now I have been mired in Cyrillic up to the very top of my head. Before that, I did not feel a particular need for Cyrillic fonts — semi-character or cursive. But now all my latest works are written in cursive letters.
As far as my style is concerned, it is still as cheeky as before. I don’t limit myself in anything. Just last night, I wrote with incredible pleasure in Italian cursive. If I want to use Gothic — please! I can start writing in fractional form.

About striving for intimacy

Now my sketches have become even more intimate. I think this is a logical path for every professional calligrapher. You choose more complex compositional solutions, more sophisticated letter designs. A sketch on a small scale is more difficult to write than a sketch on a canvas measuring one and a half meters or on a wall ten by ten.

About calligraphy as an art form

Calligraphy is definitely an art that is absolutely equal to cinematography, painting or photography. Especially now it has received some new breath in Russia. Over the past year, a lot of guys have grown a lot in their technique. They exhibit quite interesting works, among them there are etudes of absolutely colossal power. Who’s to say it’s not art? Of course, art!

It is also important to understand that a lot of things can be expressed through the form of letters. I often talk about this with my students. For example, this morning you were in such a mood, so you will get such a letter «a». But in the evening your mood is more free, which means that the letter «a» will be more free. Everything is interconnected in calligraphy. Personally, I always strive to ensure that the letters I write are filled with energy. This is the meaning of live calligraphy.

About my attitude to my own works and the future exhibition

I tell all my students: “Guys, don’t fall in love with your calligraphy!”. After all, one has only to fall in love with one’s work — everything, complete stagnation, there is no growth. That is why I am very demanding about my sketches, about my technique. I am my own harshest critic.

For example, I wrote an etude in the evening. Looked — while I’m happy with it. Photographed and posted on Instagram*. I look at him in the morning and I can’t understand how I could like him! Or my friends tell me that it’s time to do an exhibition, as a lot of works have accumulated. Yes, there are many works, but I look at them, and it seems to me that there is nothing special to exhibit. They wonder where else to grow. But how else? As far as you are demanding of yourself, your sketches will correspond to your aspirations.
But, of course, I have a desire to show my new work to the public. It is impossible to constantly work at the table. Most likely, I will organize a chamber exhibition with black and white sketches in a small format.

About new moods and trends in calligraphy

Five years ago, calligraphers actively used gothic – fracture and texture. Three years ago, a sharp pen was very popular, all the girls were engaged in it en masse. Copperplate and Spencerian were in trend. Now, it seems to me, all this has gone down a little.

Currently Cyrillic is in great demand. About six years ago, I wanted to run a semi-charter course, but I couldn’t recruit anyone. The people did not understand what it was at all, why this semi-ustav was needed, but church texts are written on it.

There is also a very powerful flow of modern expressive calligraphy, which is characterized by color and multi-layered compositions. But personally, I really look forward to Italian cursive coming into fashion. This is a beautiful, utterly luxurious typeface!

About the use of Cyrillic in European calligraphy

Just a few days ago I was talking to American calligrapher Karen Ness. I said that I often write the Latin alphabet and asked her to write the Cyrillic alphabet. Karen replied that, of course, she could do it, but she did not feel the plasticity, rhythm, construction of our letters.

On the other hand, at one of the festivals, one of the foreign colleagues expressed a very interesting idea that Western European calligraphy, by and large, has already outlived its usefulness, and it is the Cyrillic alphabet that can become a new breath for it. And recently I saw with what big eyes the Italian calligrapher Massimo Polello looked at the Russian letter “f”. It’s an alien, just a space letter! Foreigners do not even imagine what power lies in the Cyrillic characters.

I also had a series of training sketches in which I tried to make Latin and Cyrillic characters better friends. I linked several letters together, for example, «b» with «w», and «g» with «t». It turned out very unusual, but working ligaments.

About creating tools

At one time I was missing a range of tools for specific tasks. Then I decided why order when you can do it yourself. Now I continue to create instruments, although not so actively. Most of them are bought by European or American calligraphers.
