Possessive case in English

How to answer the Whose question correctly?

There are several options. First, you can use possessive pronouns or adjectives (Possessive Pronouns and Adjectives), which we have already discussed in this article.
Secondly, this is the possessive case, which will be discussed today.

Possessive case and use of the apostrophe

The English name of the case (Possessive Case) comes from the verb possess (to have, to own). The case itself indicates that an object belongs to someone or something (ownership) or a connection between people (relationship).

Most often Possessive Case is applied to animate nouns (people and animals). It is formed by adding an apostrophe (‘) and the letter S to the noun:

Tom’s car

Mary’s shoes

the cat’s tail

If the noun is plural and already has an S ending, then only an apostrophe is added in the possessive case. It is displayed only on the letter:

the girls’ dolls

my friends’ house

Some plural nouns do not end in S ( Irregular Plurals ). In the possessive case, ‘S is added to them:

women’s dresses

people’s opinions

If we are talking about an item that belongs to two or more people (common possession), then we put ‘S after the last name:

John and Jane’s flat

Bill and Sam’s dog

If ‘S is after each name, it indicates that the property is not shared, but personal (individual possession):

Kate’s and Jill’s bicycles

Sam’s and Jack’s computers

Pronunciation of

The letter S, which is added to a noun in the possessive case, can be pronounced differently depending on what sound the noun ends with. There are three pronunciations:

/IZ/ /S/ /Z/
If the noun or name ends in hissing sounds :
/S/, /Z/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /t ʃ/, /ʤ/, then the ending is pronounced /IZ/:
If the noun or name ends in hollow sound :
/k/, /p/, /t/, /f/,/ θ/, then the ending is pronounced dull:
If a noun or name ends in other consonants or vowels , then the ending is pronounced loudly:
George’s
Max’s
Alice’s
Philip’s
Jeff’s
Nick’s
Sam’s
Bill’s
Julia’s

Articles and possessive case

1. If a definitive noun is preceded by a definitive noun in the possessive case, then the article is not used, since it is replaced by the possessive case of the noun:

the car

Tom’s car

2. If the noun in the possessive case is not proper, but a common noun, then it must have an article (A / AN, THE) or another determiner (for example, a possessive adjective: my, your, his, her, its, our, their):

a girl’s bag

the dog’s house

my friend’s idea

his sister’s family

Using the preposition OF to indicate ownership

With inanimate nouns denoting objects, the preposition OF is used instead of ‘S, :

the legs of the table

the back of the chair

the cover of the book
OF is also used if the noun is followed by an explanation, which usually contains the word who:

This girl is the daughter of a woman who lives next door to me . This girl is the daughter of a woman who lives next door to me.

I forgot the name of a manager who consulted me . — I forgot the name of the manager who advised me.

As you can see, the explanations are too long to add ‘S, so we replace it with OF.

Using the apostrophe (‘S) with inanimate nouns and other parts of speech

In some cases, ‘S can be used with inanimate nouns and other parts of speech, such as adverbs and pronouns. Consider these cases:

1. If a noun denotes a group of people, a community, then both ‘S and the preposition OF can be used to indicate belonging:

the sales of the company = the company’s sales – sales of the company

the resolution of the council = the council’s resolution

Such nouns are called collective nouns. These include:

  • army — army
  • crew — team
  • family — family
  • government — government
  • nation — nation
  • party — party
  • staff — staff and others

2. It is possible to add ‘S to nouns that denote geographical concepts and names, places:

  • words world, earth, nature
  • the word continent and the names of the continents
  • the word country and country names
  • word city and city names

the world’s major religions

the country’s new Prime Minister

Russia’s capital — the capital of Russia

3. ‘S can be used with a number of words that refer to time:

  • with words denoting a period of time: minute, hour, day, week, month, year
  • with adverbs: today, yesterday, tomorrow
  • with the names of the days of the week and months: Sunday, September
  • with time indicators including the words next and last : next week, last month

an hour’s delay

yesterday’s party

next month’s conference

If the word is plural, then add only an apostrophe in the letter:

three hours’ journey

five minutes’ walk

two weeks’ business trip

4.
