Today’s lesson we will start with the Spanish alphabet. The Spanish alphabet consists of 29letters. Below you can see them.
A a [A] — pronounced like the Russian letter A a. B b [Be] — at the beginning of the word it is pronounced like Russian B b, On our site, all the pictures are movable, so that they work — you just need to hover over them, try:
Ch ch [Che] — pronounced like the Russian letter Ch ch. In the alphabet and in any words, such a combination of letters c and h — ch will be read as Russian ch. D d [De] — pronounced like the Russian letter D d. E e [E] — pronounced like the Russian letter E e. Although the spelling of this letter coincides with the Russian letter E e, in Spanish, it is pronounced like the Russian E e. F f [Efe] — in the alphabet it is pronounced like Efe, in the language it is read in words like the Russian F f. G g [Ge] — in the alphabet it is pronounced like the Russian letter Ge. In combination with the vowels e and i, it is pronounced,
What is the letter u for? Here you can trace some logic of the language. If you write the word guitar like this — gitara, it will be read as hitara, therefore, H h [Ache] — pronounced in the alphabet as ache. This letter is never read in words. I i [I] — pronounced like the Russian letter I i. J j [Hota] — in the alphabet it is pronounced as Hota. In words it reads like Russian x. Most often we can see it in those words in which we need to express the sound x in combination with the letters a, o, u. In this case, we can’t use the Spanish letter G, because it will sound like r, but the letter J will sound like x.
K k [Ka] — pronounced like the Russian letter K k. This letter is used in borrowed words and reads like the Russian K. Such words need to be memorized. L l [Ele] — pronounced like the Russian letter L l. If this letter is at the end of a word, it is read softly. Ll ll [Ellie] — pronounced like the Russian letter Y y. When you see this letter in a word, imagine that instead of it there is a Russian letter й. M m [Eme] — pronounced like the Russian letter M m. N n [Ene] — pronounced like the Russian letter H n. Ñ ñ [Enye] — when you read this letter, imagine that it is a Russian letter n with a soft sign — н. O o [O] — pronounced like the Russian letter O o. P p [Pe] — pronounced like the Russian letter P p. Q q [Ku] — this letter is always used only in combination with the letter u,
R r [Ere] — pronounced like the Russian letter R r. S s [Ese] — when we pronounce the letter S s, we should strive to say something between Russian S s and Russian Sh sh. In this case, it is necessary that the sound be closer to C with. As if you are pronouncing S with a slight rustle. You can also pronounce it like Russian s, you will be understood) T t [Te] — pronounced like the Russian letter T t. At first, Spanish learners often make the mistake of pronouncing this letter like in English, this is wrong, it should be pronounced exactly the same as in Russian. U u [U] — pronounced like the Russian letter U u. V v [Uve] — pronounced like the Russian letter V v, except when it is at the beginning of a word, at the beginning of the word the letter V v is always read either as Russian B b, or something in between B and V. And both options are correct. W w [Uwe Doble] — used in loanwords, is quite rare in the language. It is read as in English — a cross between UE and VE. X x [Ekis] — if this letter is followed by a vowel, we read it like Russian KS, if it is followed by a consonant, then we read it like S. Y y [Igriega] — in words it is read as the Russian letter Y y. Separately, it is read as Russian And and and is translated as a union and either as a union a, depending on the context. Z z [[th] this] — the pronunciation of this letter is an interdental sound th (as in the case of the letter C c) which can be observed in English in the words think, thing. When we need to convey the sound [th] in combination with the letters e and i, we use the Spanish letter C c, if we need to convey this sound in combination with the letters a, o, u, we cannot use the Spanish letter C c, because co, cu, ca will sound like ko, ku, ka. In such cases, the letter Z is used.
If you would like to practice saying the words, you can listen to and repeat the audio of all the words used in this lesson. So, this lesson is over, to check how you understood the material, try to perform You can teach here new words that caught in the lesson

Scientists trace the evolution of Liberian writing
Writing dates back thousands of years. But how did it start and how did it develop? The rare script of the Liberian language, which is almost 200 years old, helps to understand the evolution of writing.

The Wai language is only 200 years old, so scientists have been able to easily trace its evolution
Until now, the true origin of writing remains a mystery to scientists. It is known that writing probably first appeared in the Middle East about 5000 years ago, was forgotten for a century, and then reinvented in China and Central America.
At the beginning of the 19th century, a small group of Liberians invented their own Wai script. Instead of copying Latin or Arabic letters, as happened with most languages, they invented their own alphabet.
Wai is spoken by about 100,000 people in Liberia, as well as a small number of neighbors from Sierra Leone and expatriate communities around the world. Until the 19th century, the language was completely oral, without writing.
As former American slaves settled in what became Liberia, Vai speakers began to need a written language. However, where speakers of most other African languages used the letters of European or Semitic scripts to write their speech, the Vai created their own.
ADVERTISING — CONTINUED BELOW
“The Wai script in Liberia was created from scratch around 1834 by eight completely illiterate men who wrote with ink made from crushed berries,” , the scientists write.
According to scholars, the Wai script is usually taught in an informal manner by a literate teacher to one student. She lives to this day: people are currently using her to convey health advice during a pandemic.
“Because of the isolation of the language and how it has continued to evolve to this day, we thought it might tell us something important about how writing develops over short periods of time.
