You can add headers or footers at the top or bottom of a printed worksheet in Excel. For example, you might create a footer that has page numbers, the date, and the name of your file. You can create your own, or use many built-in headers and footers.

Headers and footers are displayed only in Page Layout view, Print Preview, and on printed pages. You can also use the Page Setup dialog box if you want to insert headers or footers for more than one worksheet at a time. For other sheet types, such as chart sheets, or charts, you can insert headers and footers only by using the Page Setup dialog box.

Add or change headers or footers in Page Layout view


  1. Click the worksheet where you want to add or change headers or footers.

  2. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Header & Footer.

    Excel displays the worksheet in Page Layout view.

  3. To add or edit a header or footer, click the left, center, or right header or footer text box at the top or the bottom of the worksheet page (under Header, or above Footer).

  4. Type the new header or footer text.

    Notes: 

    • To start a new line in a header or footer text box, press Enter.

    • To include a single ampersand (&) in the text of a header or footer, use two ampersands. For example, to include «Subcontractors & Services» in a header, type Subcontractors && Services.

    • To close headers or footers, click anywhere in the worksheet. To close headers or footers without keeping the changes that you made, press Esc.

  1. Click the worksheet or worksheets, chart sheet, or chart where you want to add or change headers or footers.

    Tip: You can select multiple worksheets with Ctrl+Left-click. When multiple worksheets are selected, [Group] appears in the title bar at the top of the worksheet. To cancel a selection of multiple worksheets in a workbook, click any unselected worksheet. If no unselected sheet is visible, right-click the tab of a selected sheet, and then click Ungroup Sheets.

  2. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click the Dialog Box Launcher .

    Excel displays the Page Setup dialog box.

  3. On the Header/Footer tab, click Custom Header or Custom Footer.

  4. Click in the Left, Center, or Right section box, and then click any of the buttons to add the header or footer information that you want in that section.

  5. To add or change the header or footer text, type additional text or edit the existing text in the Left, Center, or Right section box.

    Notes: 

    • To start a new line in a header or footer text box, press Enter.

Well, first I must mention that I am a total amateur when it comes to excellence. I have no experience with VBA or macros, so if you’re not sure if I know something else, I probably don’t.

I have a workbook with 6 sheets inside; one of the sheets is the master; it’s just the other 6 sheets, compiled into one large one. I need to set it up so that any new data entered into the new individual sheets is automatically entered into the master sheet on the first empty row.

Let’s say I have a summary table of all support questions asked in 2013 with a column called Assigned To.

Now I want three separate sheets, one for each helpdesk rep in the Assigned To column, that will contain only that person’s helpdesk tickets. But in addition to that, I need the following to be possible:

  • New data added to the main sheet will automatically populate on the appropriate subsets of the sheets.
  • A master sheet can be sorted and filtered by itself without affecting a subset of sheets.
  • Functions and charts that analyze data on any worksheet should automatically adjust to new data.

Sounds complicated? This is wrong!

The steps below explain how to set this up using Excel 2007 or later.

(This feature is also available in earlier versions of Excel. )

  1. Create all required sheets in the book. Here I have created a sheet for each support rep.
  2. Create a named range for your main table. Select the data in your table (including headers), type e enter the name of the range in the name field to the left of the formula bar, then press Enter. The named range is required by Microsoft Query to select data for analysis.
  3. Create a table from your main table. Highlight your data as described above. Open tab Insert . Click Table . This step is a bit redundant, but converting your data into a table has a lot of benefits, the main one being that when you add new data to it, it automatically expands to collect the new data.   4. Go to the sheet where you want to place the query results. It could be a different worksheet, or even a different workbook.

  11. Because you have inserted the data as a table, you have the special option to Update if you make any changes to the main table. You can find Update in the Data tab or in the Table Tools tab Design .

You will need to repeat steps 4-11 for each subset of sheets you have. But once it’s all set up, you have a nice little Excel database!
