Brothers and sisters: why so much enmity?

132,983

To parents

Key messages

  • Envy and jealousy are an inevitable part of childhood relationships in families with several children.
  • To nullify aggression between brothers and sisters, it is necessary to recognize its existence and allow it to find its expression.
  • Differences in living standards and lifestyles in adulthood can exacerbate childhood hostility.

Conflicts between siblings usually end in adolescence. “After several years of violent showdown, children finally get the chance to become real brothers and sisters to each other,” says child psychotherapist Marcel Rufo. — When the younger one is just entering adolescence, and the older one, for example, is experiencing its heyday, their rapprochement is facilitated. They understand each other better because each now knows what suffering is and supports the other in the fight against adults for their rights. They are also united by the realization that they have a common family past…”

However, sometimes conflicts continue into adulthood. They may flare up again during telephone arguments, family dinners, or even a chance meeting, with siblings attacking each other with such rage as if they hadn’t really matured yet. Why can’t some of us «bury the hatchet»?

All children’s grievances and experiences are stored in the unconscious. The slightest reason — and we again experience envy, anger, hatred. It is especially difficult for those who suffered in childhood, and as adults, continue to live in the world of childhood insults, stubbornly refusing to part with them, understand and forgive, and therefore change. Here are a few typical situations that doom us to many years of mutual hostility.

“My brother shouldn’t have been born at all!”

“I hated my brother as soon as my mother returned from the hospital with him,” recalls 38-year-old Elena. “I was two years old then, but I remember how they put him in my crib and how I screamed: “My bye-bye, I want my bye-bye, take it away!” I was indignant, I did not understand why «this» was brought here. Since then I haven’t been able to fall in love with him…”

“We can hardly remember exactly what happened to us at such an early age,” comments psychotherapist Yekaterina Mikhailova. “Most likely, Elena’s parents retold this story more than once, turning it into a functional family myth, and in doing so, more or less consciously introduced hostility into the relationship between the two children.

Really, was it really necessary to put the «new» son into the daughter’s bed? The girl took it as a direct message: he will take your place. Which, from her point of view, later happened.

“A child cannot afford to deliberately hate his mother,” Ekaterina Mikhailova continues. “But not to love your brother – although he is not to blame for anything in himself – although it’s not good, it’s still possible.”

It seems paradoxical, but rivalry between children suits some parents: it allows them to feel their exclusive parental authority, and also … to continue to settle scores with their own brothers and sisters.

“Unwittingly cultivating rivalry between children, they get stuck in their own past,” says Ekaterina Mikhailova. “Telling a son or daughter, ‘That’s what it’s like to be the eldest (youngest)!’, they try to share their pain and bitterness with their children, often not realizing how cruel they act.”

In large families, where there are four or five children, everyone has their own well-defined place, and they compete less often. “Even when there are three children, the intensity of passions is already somewhat less,” says Ekaterina Mikhailova. “The birth of the third one changes the relationship between the first two: it’s better to play hide-and-seek with Vasya, and it’s more interesting to draw with Manya, and sometimes they both ignore me … The topic of “hatred” still comes up more often when there are two children.”

“My brother had more chances”

In his Confession, Blessed Augustine describes the dismay of a little boy at the sight of his younger brother crouching at his mother’s breast. Realizing that he himself is already too big to feed on breast milk, the child nevertheless dreams about this and envies the bliss of his brother.

“To wish is to wish for another,” said the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. We often desire someone else’s thing, not because we like it, but because the other desires it and possesses it. Thus, envy and jealousy in children’s relationships between brothers and sisters are inevitable.

The difference in the level and way of life exacerbates everything that went wrong in childhood relationships

The chances of continuing to hate each other increase if we, blinded by envy and unable to give up our claims, cannot find our own desires, own life. When we fail to do this, we begin to blame the sister or brother for the fact that it was he (a) who deprived us of the happiness due to us and prevented (a) from succeeding in life.

The difference in the level and way of life exacerbates everything that did not go well in children’s relationships. Yes, 29-year-old Alexandra was shocked not to receive an invitation to her younger sister’s wedding — because «she could make an unfavorable impression on the guests,» as the newlywed said.

When relations reach such a degree of hostility, the prospect of reconciliation seems very utopian. Even in the case when there are no such truly exceptional circumstances as betrayal, violation of this word.

First brotherhood, first murder

Cain, the firstborn of Adam and Eve, killed his younger brother Abel. The name Cain has become a household name, denoting a person who, out of envy, is ready to commit a crime. If a child hates his brother or sister to the point that he wants them dead, then the mother is certainly to blame for this, psychoanalyst Daniel Siboney believes, rereading the biblical story of Cain and Abel.

The mother connected all her aspirations with her eldest son, crying out at his birth: «I got a man from the Lord.» He is her «main child», and Abel is not of particular interest to her. Nevertheless, Cain cannot bear the existence of a brother. After all, he believed that he was destined to be «everything» not only for his mother, but for the whole world too.

But when he sees Abel, he realizes that this is really just a figment of his fantasies. Then Cain moves to action: Abel dies at the hands of his brother. But not all Cains are murderers, as a rule, they are simply full of hatred, which they sadistically take out on their brother. It’s also a way to interfere with its existence.

“My sister has always been a favorite”

“My parents have always worried only about my sister – both when she was sick a lot as a child, and now, when their “poor baby” is already over 30 and she feels great, absolutely indifferent to everyone and to them in particular,” 37-year-old Irina is indignant. “They believe that I myself am able to cope with any situation, and they don’t even realize how much bitterness and sadness in my life and how hard it is for me to be alone.”

The words «think a little about your sister (brother)» are perceived as «she (he) needs love and protection more than you.» It is difficult for a child to endure, it is not easy to accept when you become an adult: such an attitude of parents devalues our existence. And just like in childhood, we feel that we are not understood, not recognized, not appreciated …

“But none of the children can know exactly the motives of their parents’ selective love,” says Ekaterina Mikhailova. — After all, it is likely that Irina’s younger sister is «poor thing» only because her birth was, for example, an attempt to save a disintegrating marriage between her parents. So, in a sense, the long-term talk about the “poor thing” is actually a call from parents for help: you are strong, young, help us.

«I was forced to love my brother»

The birth of the youngest, as a rule, does not cause euphoria in the elder. At best, he feels something like this: «I like my brother (sister), but I also liked it when dad and mom had only me.» But parents cannot be satisfied with such an attitude towards the newborn; they want close relationships to be established between the children from the very beginning.

“When my sister was born,” recalls 31-year-old Valery, “the first thing my grandmother asked me was: “Do you love Musya?” I was nine years old, and I was surprised: “How can I love someone whom I have not even seen yet?” When my family realized that I was not at all enthusiastic about Musiechka, they began to talk to me coldly and hostilely, as if I had offended them. In response, I withdrew, moved away, and over time, the whole family waved their hand at me. Now my sister and I only meet at our parents’ birthdays, we send messages to each other on our birthdays, and that’s it.»

Relationship patterns between children are very stable. “If Valery’s parents hadn’t forced him to love his sister, everything could have turned out differently,” says family therapist Alexander Chernikov. By forbidding children to openly express what they feel, parents achieve the opposite result: hidden conflicts, jealousy, envy and hostility appear. And vice versa, when they understand and respect the feelings of everyone, it is easier for children to cope with experiences and free themselves from their grievances.

“We have nothing in common”

“My brother and I are ten years apart,” 34-year-old Inga writes on our site’s forum. “We have nothing to talk about with each other: we were brought up differently: I was strict, and he was spoiled.”

Hostility between children is greatest when the age gap between siblings is approximately two to four years. “Older children still have a little strength to cope with their natural negative emotions — envy, aggressiveness and anxiety, which are caused in them by the appearance of a rival in the house,” comments Alexander Chernikov. “With a difference of more than four years, there is less aggression in the relationship, with the exception of cases when parents openly single out one of the children or, on the contrary, intentionally show “equal” love.”

According to experts, it is impossible to love your children “equally”, and it is not necessary: they are really different — in age, character and interests, and each of them needs to be given what he needs at the moment, so that he has opportunity to live and grow. If each of the brothers and sisters receives their share of acceptance and recognition from their parents, the relationship between them will also be based on acceptance and respect for each other.

Loss of parents exacerbates long-standing conflicts

“My sisters and I lived amicably, never seriously quarreled, and our life seemed to be going well,” says 39-year-old Vladislav. — When my father died, and six months later my mother, I found out that my younger sisters … filed a lawsuit, challenging the will, because they believed that I had no right to claim my part of the inheritance. I was shocked».

“The death of parents is an important stage in the relationship between brothers and sisters,” Alexander Chernikov explains. — If, after this event, adult children become more united, then, most likely, family relationships were built on love, respect and affection for each other, and none of them had serious secret grievances and claims.

And vice versa, everything that brothers and sisters could not accept and forgive becomes aggravated after the death of their parents: they feel an insurmountable hostility towards each other, make endless mutual claims and divide the inherited property for years.”

My nephew volunteered to fix our washing machine, but after his «repair» it had to be taken to a landfill

I learned from my own experience that one should not turn to relatives for help in serious matters, such as repairing an apartment or household appliances, like mine . After all, they do everything tyap-blunder, albeit for free.

In my case, «free of charge» resulted in a very tidy sum, because after my crooked nephew Vova «repaired» the washing machine, it quickly «died to death». And now it’s in a landfill.

I would tear off Vova’s hands so that he could no longer even touch any equipment with his finger, but this is already a criminal offense. In addition, this bastard refused to give money for our damaged typewriter.

It so happened that a week ago I had a birthday, which this time I decided to celebrate not only with my husband and daughter, but also with my parents, as well as my cousin and her son.

And, just as luck would have it, that day our washing machine went haywire — one of my favorite modes stopped working. My husband and I decided to postpone the solution of this problem until later, so as not to spoil my holiday.

And the next day they wanted to call the master. Probably, it should have been done that way — you see, now the machine would still be alive. But alas, we were seduced by the opportunity to save money.

During the feast, our conversation smoothly flowed into the mainstream of everyday affairs, and I complained about my problem with the washing machine. Then the cousin’s eyes lit up, and she said that her son would be happy to take on the job.

«To hell with these craftsmen! They won’t really do anything, but they’ll charge you exorbitant prices. My Vovchik will do everything in the best possible way — you can even fly into space on a washing machine. But he won’t take a penny — his own. Really, Vova? «.

And so, the nephew, breaking away from Olivier, confirmed the words of his mother. Like, he is really ready to put our car in full order «even tomorrow.» When I asked why the nephew himself needed this repair, since he had nothing from him, he replied that he wanted to start earning money in this way, but for now he needed to fill his hand.

«Aunt Nastya, I’ll be repairing household appliances in my free time — it’s a profitable business. Look, I’ve already fixed a vacuum cleaner, a blender and, again, a couple of washing machines for my friends. It seems nothing complicated, but it won’t hurt to gain more experience» .

Well, my husband and I decided that this was quite a reasonable argument, and therefore agreed that Vova would solve the issue with our washing machine. As agreed, he came to us in the evening of the next day and immediately got down to business.

It took Vova three hours to do everything, after which he called my husband and me and with a smile from ear to ear uttered the repairmen’s favorite phrase «masters, take the job.»

It’s true, my favorite laundry program is up and running again. In gratitude, we fed my nephew dinner, we even wanted to give money, but he flatly refused.

As subsequent events showed, we were lucky that Vova made just such a decision. After all, before he had time to go home, our washer began to make strange sounds, similar to a whistle, and then stopped working altogether.

We tried turning it off and on again, but it didn’t work. In general, our machine died, although we did not know about it at that moment. Of course, I called Vova.

Wanted to find out what he did to our tech because it went down so abruptly. But he turned on the fool and said that we must have done something wrong. «Listen, Aunt Nastya, I fixed it to the conscience. I don’t know why your washer went out. I suppose you broke it yourself.»

Yes, how could we break it, if we only turned it on, you might say? Yes, and we put the simplest things — without any pieces of iron, which, in theory, could come off and disable the «insides» of the machine.

But it was useless to argue with Vova, he’s out of business — and that’s it. I had to call the master after all. It was he who said that our washing machine broke down completely and irrevocably.

At the same time, he said that someone obviously clumsily tinkered with its «stuffing» before, because, according to him, everything turned out to be installed crookedly and askew. Well, nephew! Well, you did it, you bastard.

He also boasted about what a craftsman he was. And how, I wonder, did he repair the equipment to those familiar with his crooked hands? Lied, I suppose, for the red word. And our machine was just used for experiments.

And why did we get involved in this adventure? After seeing off the master, my husband and I dialed Vova’s number and gave him a dressing down, quoted the words of the master. And then they demanded compensation for the damage, since the machine finally broke down precisely after Vovin’s manipulations.

But he again began to claim that we were to blame for the breakdown, and he would not compensate us for anything, after which he hung up. Literally five minutes later, a call came from an angry sister, who squealed for a long time about how we «dared to run into her boy, and even shake money from him.
