Posted on9 Best Kids Swim Vests & Puddle Jumpers That They Won’t B*tch About Wearing
Kids life jackets, puddle jumpers, and swim vests will make a day in the water safer for your little one. That said, one of the most ironic aspects of motherhood is the straight-up marathon you have to run every damn day to get your kid to do what is absolutely necessary to keep them alive—like wearing a life jacket. “If you want to go in the lake, you have to wear sunscreen — and a life jacket,” said the insanely overtired mother to her ungrateful and unwilling-to-listen 6-year-old eyeing the new pool. Sound familiar?

Life Jackets vs. Puddle Jumpers vs. Swim Vests
But first, we want to clarify: While a life jacket or life vest may be a blanket term for wearable floating devices, there is a big difference between life jackets, puddle jumpers, and swim vests.
Life jackets: When it comes to life jackets, it’s in the name — these are specifically designed to save lives. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, and the second most common in kids under 5 — and it can occur with less than an inch of water, notes Alison Mitzner, M.D., a pediatrician in New York City. “It is so important that children wear a life jacket while in or near water, including boating, swimming, at a beach, on a dock, rafting, tubing or near lakes, rivers or oceans etc.,” she says. “It is a simple way to stay safe.”
Even if you’ve stocked up on a boatload of pool floaties, water wings, blow-ups, and plastic rings, they shouldn’t take the place of life jackets, which are essential for every child who will be exposed to a body of water. “They only work when worn and of course they never replace adult supervision,” adds Dr. Mitzner. “And we, as our kids biggest role models, should wear one too for our own safety and also to set the example for our children even early on to learn the importance of a life jacket and water safety. ” For optimum safety, you’ll want to get a life jacket that’s specifically Coast Guard-approved.
Puddle jumpers: These are the floaties that go around a child’s waist and arms. They can also be Coast Guard-approved for safety. However, there is some controversy over whether puddle jumpers are good or bad because the posture they hold kids in is not conducive to learning how to swim. In other words, they will keep your tot afloat, but if you’re trying to teach them to swim, a swim vest is a much better option.
Swim vests: Specifically designed to give kiddos a buoyant boost as they learn to swim, these are great tools for younger children as they begin to doggy paddle with close adult supervision. These aren’t too bulky or cumbersome which allows your kid can move in the water, and some of the best options have removable floats that you can adjust as your child becomes a stronger swimmer. That said, these are not meant to take the place of life jackets, as they are not designed to be life-saving devices.
How Should You Size A Life Jacket For A Child?
A properly fitted life jacket is key. It should fit snugly when fastened and be free of tears, rips or signs of wear, explains Jarret Patton, M.D., a pediatrician in eastern Pennsylvania. “A life jacket that is too small may not provide enough buoyancy and one that is too big may allow for the child to slip out of it,” he says. “A quick test you can do to see if it is the right fit is to gently pull up on the vest while your child’s arms are up in the air. If the vest can be pulled above their ears, it is likely too big.”

This one is designed for children weighing 30 to 50 lbs, meeting strict requirements for use on boats, in public pools and at water parks. The fabric is made out of a woven polyester that is gentle against your child’s sensitive skin with less chafing. The real selling point for your kid, of course, is definitely going to be the fact that he or she can choose from one of 15 different prints and designs. “Infant life jackets are especially important as they provide added support to the head since most infants and toddlers are top heavy,” says Jesus Alderete, Senior Program Coordinator of Injury Prevention at Children’s Health in Dallas, Texas. What is a puddle jumper?
Puddle Jumpers are not designed to turn a child’s face upright when in the water. Great for supervised play and learning swimming basics. They are a swim vest with built in floaties or water wings designed for toddlers.
My toddler wearing a puddle jumper, a vest with attached arm floats.
Best to use once your toddler reaches the minimum weight for the product. You need to be in the water with your toddler. Puddle jumpers are a great first introduction product for toddlers in a body of water or exploring near a body of water
What is a swim vest?
A swim vest was designed for a child learning to swim. It has less buoyancy than a puddle jumper or a life jacket. The main purpose of a swim vest is to help your toddler learn to swim. They are not meant to save lives. As a parent, if your child is wearing a swim vest you should be in the water with them to ensure their faces are out of the water and the toddler stays afloat.
Best to use once a kid has some basic swim skills, a key one being able to tread water. Read on to find more details on the best toddler swim vest.
What is a life jacket?
A life jacket has to be coast guard approved and their purpose is to save a life. They are designed to keep the head out of the water. They provide the most buoyancy, but will also be the bulkiest and are not the best tool to learn to swim.
LIfe Jackets are best to be worn when partaking in boating or a moving vessel. It is the US law that a life jacket must be worn when on an open deck of a moving vessel for a child under the age of 13. Boating companies will have to provide a life jacket for your toddler if they are to come onto the ship.
Each state also has their own guideline regarding life jacket requirements and penalties. To read more about it visit Sea Tow Foundation’s article here.
What to look for in a swim vest for toddlers?
The main differential qualities to look for in swim products for your toddler are:
- Material. The material of the swim product is important. You want a material that is waterproof and durable. You also want the swim aid to be able to dry quickly. The best materials are made from polyester, nylon and neoprene.
For puddle jumpers and swim best for toddlers nylon or polyester is most commonly used. Nylon is more durable and water-resistant but also comes with a higher price tag compared to polyester. Polyester provides a better UV resistance when compared to nylon and polyester is more eco-friendly (takes significantly less energy to synthesize which results in lower carbon emissions).
Neoprene is a pure rubber and the material wet suits are made out of. Neoprene is known to provide warmth and is softer to wear, although it takes longer to dry. If you are looking for a life jacket for toddlers you should look for a neoprene option.:
- UV Protection. Most swim aids provide some UV protection. However you still might want to suncream your toddler for added protection, especially if the swim aid can wiggle around a bit.
- Weight Range. Each product comes with a child weight range. Ensure your toddler is within the recommended weight range, otherwise the product might not perform as expected.
What are the 5 types of Life Jackets?
There are 5 different types of personal floatation devices. A worthwhile toddler puddle jumper will be a Type III, or known as floatation aide. A life jacket to save your toddlers life will be a Type I.
You can watch this video to learn more about the differences.
What if my 1 year old doesn’t fit the minimum weight requirement for a swim vest?
Most puddle jumpers and swim vests have a minimum child weight of 30 lbs. If your 1 year old doesn’t meet this requirement you can look for a baby floatie to be used in a pool or body of water, under your supervision. Some puddle jumpers can fit a smaller child and might be worth looking at.
Best Toddler Swim Vests For Toddlers 1, 2 and 3 year old
For the younger toddler a puddle jumper swim vest is going to be your best choice. Until your toddler has learned some swimming basics the added arm floaties will help keep your toddler comfortable in the water under your protection.
Stearns Original Puddle Jumper – Best Overall
Stearns offer two different original puddle jumpers; one option being deluxe. The difference between the two is the deluxe option is made from a woven polyester fabric which is softer and causes less chafing. The original uses a nylon shell. It is worth the extra $5. Also the deluxe weighs less by 0.3lbs.
Stearns puddle jumper fits around your child right underneath their armpits and has an adjustable buckle that straps in the back of your toddler, ensuring they cannot take it off. With the puddle jumper style it also has arm floats. The jacket is Type III US Coast Guard approved, meaning approved for personal floatation aide. Adult supervision required.
The puddle jumper is lightweight (.27 lbs) and dries quickly. It is machine washable, but should be hung dry. The swim jacket comes in multiple designs and is made for children 30-50lbs.
The only negative is that on a skinny child the device can wiggle around and not be the best fit. For this reason I would suncream your toddler even under the puddle jumper, unless a rashguard is worn underneath.
Body Glove Paddle Pals Life Jacket – Best Swim Vest for Slender Toddlers
If your toddler is slender this is the perfect life vest. Unlike Stearns puddle jumper design Body Glove’s design features a shoulder harness. Their design is patented. This is to ensure the swim vest stays in place as well as the adjustable strap in the back and arm floats.
Body Glove paddle pals is a US Coast Guard approved Type III flotation device. It is made from polyester and designed to prevent chafing. It comes in many different fun designs and fits kids 30-50 lbs. The product weighs 0.6 lb making it the heaviest of the three puddle jumpers.
Many people have started using this product before their toddler reached 30 lbs. I also have used it when my son was 25lbs and found it fit right. Just ensure the jacket stays in place on your toddler and does not ride up.
Nexwave Kids Life Jacket – Best Swim Vest for 1 year old
My 21 month old at the beach in Nexwave vest
The best swim vest for a toddler smaller than 30 lbs is from Nexwave. My 1 year old wore this when he was (24-28 lbs) and it worked great for him. I will continue to have him wear it again this summer.
The Nexwave vest features a double stitched buckle that snaps in the back, weighs less than half a pound and provides a 12 month warranty. It comes in three different designs and in my personal experience I have not had issues with it wiggling around alot.
My 1 year old asks to put it on when arriving at a pool and appears comfortable in it for long periods of time. It also dries quickly.
Best Swim Vest for Toddler with Swimming Basics (3 and 4 year old)
Once your toddler has some swimming basics a swim vest is more appropriate. A swim vest is a great choice if you want to continue teaching your toddler how to swim. The removal of the arm floaties allows for more movement. Parent supervision is required when your toddler is wearing a swim vest.
The most important things I look for with a swim vest for toddler are
- Zipper front with closure : A zipper is more secure than buckles and less bulky
- Adjustable buckle to go down between their legs: This helps make sure the vest does not ride up on a toddler and cause chafing and irritation.
Speedo Unisex-Child Swim Flotation Classic Life Vest Begin to Swim – Best Overall Swim Vest for 3 & 4 year old
Speedo makes a great learning to swim swim vest for toddlers. It provides UPF protection 50 and is made from soft polyester. The vest only weighs 0.2 lbs making it easy for your toddler to move around in and out of the pool. It comes in a handful of different designs for either a boy or girl.
The Speedo vest features a zip with a safety closure and buckle to go down and between their legs ensuring it stays in place and on your toddler and does not lift upward. It comes in two sizes: medium (33-44 lbs) and large (45-60lbs).
Again this is going to be a great option once your toddler has some experience in the water, such as treading water. This vest is great to start learning the strokes to swim and when supervised.
SwimSchool Swim Trainer Vest – Best Toddler Swim Vest for smaller 3 or 4 year old
If your toddler is on the small size and you want a product to enable them to start learning to swim better, the SwimSchool trainer vest is a great option. The small fits a toddler up to 33 lbs and a medium will go up to 50lbs.
Like the Speedo swim vest, the Swimschool vest has a zipper closure with safety cover as well as a buckle snap to go between their legs. Ensure the buckle strap is the right fit, without this the vest can ride up and might chaf the face or neck.
The vest was designed for a child to be in a forward position learning to swim by having flex-form foam pads in the right location. The product weighs 0.77 lbs, a bit more than speedo due to the added foam pads to try to keep the toddler in a prone swimming position. It is UPF 50 and still recommends having a rashguard below the vest, especially to reduce any chance of chafing.
I recommend this for pool use mostly, for rougher waters a swim vest which also is suited for a child not in the forward position would be best.
Overall Safety Tips for Toddlers with Swim Vests On
–Never leave a child unattended with a swim vest
-Make sure it can’t be easily removed by your toddlers (think strap in back)
-Ensure the vest is suited to the right weight of your toddler
Hope this helps you determine what toddler swim vest is best for your child!

The 11 Best Kids’ Life Jackets 2022
Popular Mechanics; Courtesy O’Neill
Safety is the name of the game when it comes to fun on the water with kids. But comfort is also key, especially if you’re hoping to introduce your kids to a lifelong love of swimming and boating.
Water wings and other blow-up toys are just that: fun ways to float your kids’ boats, but not life-saving devices in emergency situations. More children ages one to four die from drowning than any other cause, save birth defects, and the Centers for Disease Control stresses the need for life jackets in, around, and just outside of rivers, lakes, and oceans, even if children are confident swimmers.
Not every life jacket is made for every situation though, and we include a range of jackets that meet highly specific needs. Shopping for a life jacket is important, but with our guide, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

What to Consider
It goes without saying that safety is the priority when it comes to picking a life jacket for your child. If you keep these considerations in mind, we think you’ll find the safest option for your child, without sacrificing the sense of fun and adventure summer water fun inspires.
U.S. Coast Guard-Approved
Every single one of the life jackets we included have been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, specifically with children’s safety on the water in mind. There are five different types of personal flotation devices (PFDs), and most of those we cover are «USCG Type III» (flotation aids). Type I are offshore life jackets; Type II are near-shore vests; Type IV are throwable devices; and Type V are special-use devices.
Fit
A life vest must fit properly to be safe and effective. It should fit snuggly; if it’s too tight, chances are your kid has outgrown it and it won’t provide sufficient flotation. A fastened vest should never rise above the face when a child is in the water; if it does, it’s likely too large.
Weight
Weigh and measure the circumference of your child’s chest before clicking “buy. ” Most life vests come in three ranges: 30 pounds and less, 30 to 50 pounds, and 50 to 90 pounds.
Materials
Life vest shells are typically made of nylon, polyester, or neoprene, with polyethylene (PE) or expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam, which is extremely buoyant and happens to be 100 percent recyclable.
Use
Your child is going to need a very different life jacket if they’re a non-swimmer exploring the pool for the first time, or a big kid who’s an experienced swimmer and wants to spend an afternoon kayaking.
Practice
One final pro tip, especially with kids 5 and under: Practice. Before heading out on the water, help your child put the jacket on and take it off so you can trouble-shoot. Then test the jacket in a controlled environment like a public or private pool, or in calm water with an adult supervising.
How We Selected

The best baby swim vest | Reviews
Babies love swimming and splashing around in the water. It’s not surprising really, considering they spent almost nine months in a fluid-filled environment before making their way into the world. Some babies, however, are hesitant in water and need reassurance that they are safe. This is where a baby swim vest is ideal.

It has made it easier for me to take her swimming whilst pregnant. It has also stopped her from going under a few times when she has been crazy in the water. She is now learning to float and control herself in the water with it. I couldn’t recommend this more for peace of mind in the pool.»

Life Jacket vs Puddle Jumper vs Swim Vest
With warm weather comes water fun. For most, this time is eagerly awaited for the rest of the year. For parents, though, this season comes with its own host of dangers.
At this time every year, parents place their children in the water and hope they are protecting their precious little ones as best they can. This protection usually includes some sort of personal flotation device or PFD.
We put our children in life jackets and Puddle Jumpers, feeling assured that these devices will keep our kids alive and afloat. But are these wearables all created equal?
What’s the Difference?
We typically use the terms life jackets, swim vests, and Puddle Jumpers interchangeably, but they definitely are not. Each of these flotation devices is designed with different purposes in mind and, truly, only one will likely save a life.
Life Jacket
Life jackets are buoyant flotation devices intended to keep one’s head above water in case of an emergency.
You’ll recognize proper life jackets if you’ve ever ridden a boat or other watercraft. Water vehicles are required to have a jacket available for each passenger. Children under 13 are required to wear one at all times during a ride.
When on open water, the Coast Guard recommends wearing Type II or Type III jacket. Type II jackets are designed to flip an unconscious person heads up. Type III jackets are more comfortable, but require the wearer to be able to tread water to await rescue.
Puddle Jumper
It’s almost guaranteed that you’ve seen a Puddle Jumper. Just go to a pool on any given day and you’ll see numerous toddlers decked out in their bright and fun Puddle Jumpers.
Stearns, the manufacturer of Puddle Jumpers, was inspired by the arm floaties of the past. They work even better than floaties though. After all, Puddle Jumpers have the Coast Guard seal of approval.
Puddle Jumpers are put on by slipping the child’s arms in the floats. It is then buckled in the back for a tight fit.
The Stearns flotation vest keeps a child’s head, chest, and arms afloat, allowing for easier and more confident swimming.
Swim Vest vs Life Jacket
A swim vest is a special flotation device made for toddlers and small children. They look similar to life jackets, but they do not offer the same level of protection.
These vests are usually made of neoprene and zip up in the front. They are more comfortable than life jackets because they aren’t as bulky.
Swim vests do not carry the U.S. Coast Guard seal of approval because they are not designed to keep a person’s head above water to save them in an aquatic emergency.
Swim vests can help your child stay afloat, thanks to a certain level of buoyancy, but still requires some semblance of skill on the wearer’s end. Most swim vests would need the child to be able to tread water until help arrived.
The Case Against the Puddle Jumper and Swim Vests
Most parents assume Puddle Jumpers are the safest option for little ones in the water. After all, they’re like souped-up arm floaties and we all used those growing up. I even had my son in a Puddle Jumper his first several times in the water after all my friends recommended one.
Recently though, this once-beloved flotation device has been catching a lot of heat. Browsing Google results for “puddle jumper” brings up results like “Puddle Jumpers: More Harm than Good?” and “Why My Daughter Never Wears a Puddle Jumper.”
What’s the problem? Shouldn’t Puddle Jumpers be seen as a good thing, because they can give children confidence in the water to become better swimmers?
As a matter of fact, that’s the major complaint with Puddle Jumpers. It’s widely believed that Puddle Jumpers hinder proper swimming techniques and give children a false sense of security in the water.
This isn’t limited to only Puddle Jumpers, although it’s the most commonly targeted. Swim vests of all types are presumed guilty of the same crimes.
The next time you see a kid in a Puddle Jumper or a swim vest, observe how they swim. Thanks to the bulky Puddle Jumper, wearers end up swimming upright. This isn’t the natural body angle for swimming. Michael Phelps isn’t swimming that way, after all.
The natural position for swimming is horizontal and face down. This allows for the arms to sweep and the legs to kick.
Plus, wearables like Puddle Jumpers and swim vests give children unearned confidence around water. In a survey of parents whose children experienced a drowning incident, 80% believed their child had a false sense of security that did not match their swimming abilities. Most of these children had often worn Puddle Jumpers or swim vests prior to the incident.
When children swim unaided in their Puddle Jumper, they believe they are swimming on their own. This leads to small children believing the water is safe and that they can enter the water without parental help.
What’s the Best For Learning to Swim?
Simply put, none of them. In a true water emergency, it’s highly likely your child won’t have any sort of personal flotation device. Consider the countless drownings of children who slip past parents and fall into backyard pools.
In a scenario like that, a child needs to be able to swim and keep their head above water until help arrives. If they have never learned how to swim without a flotation device, that fall into the pool quickly becomes a tragedy.
Instead of depending on swim vests in pools, focus on proper swim classes, and teaching your child to stay alive in a water emergency.
Wrapping it Up
As a parent, you are just trying to do what’s best for your child. For places with potential life and death scenarios, like in the water, making the right choice can be overwhelming.
If your child is on any sort of watercraft, a life jacket is an absolute must. These situations bring your child out onto open water where they can end up unconscious in an accident and waiting on a rescue in the water.
However, if your child is fully supervised while swimming in a pool, a flotation device might be a hindrance, especially to those learning to swim.
In the simplest of terms, always use life jackets on open water and try to avoid devices like Puddle Jumpers and swim vests if possible.

Swimming vests for kids — THE BEST IN REVIEW
Swimming vests are a great tool to help your little ones get comfortable in the water. Here is a brief overview of the best swim vests for toddlers.
When it comes to the pool (or the beach), the first things that usually come to mind are sun and fun. This is right. Immediately after waiting for the joy of swimming in the water, safety is remembered, especially if you have children.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children in many countries.
Use of swim vests for children
A swim vest is one tool that children can use to feel safe in the water. Life jackets not only provide safety, but also create a comfortable stay in the water. In this way, your children can learn to enjoy swimming and not be afraid of the water.
Large selection of swimming vests on Aliexpress.
Children who are new to the pool and learning to swim can be clingy and anxious. A swim vest is an essential element of children’s swimming equipment as it helps to increase «water literacy» by giving them a certain degree of independence.
Children’s swim jacket or life jacket
They generally look the same and basically perform the same functions in the water. However, there are big differences between a swim jacket and a life jacket.
Essentially, choosing a swim jacket or a life jacket depends on what kind of water you’re going to be in.
- Lifejackets tend to be much thicker for added buoyancy and are more difficult to move around in. They have several strong front closures and many provide thermal protection for cold open water.
- Swimming vests are thinner and designed for swimming pools and still waters. Although they provide less buoyancy than a lifejacket, they provide a greater range of motion. They also provide enough mobility and buoyancy to give young swimmers confidence in the water.
So, life jackets are made for survival, and swimming vests are made for playing on the water. Of course, it should be noted that neither a life jacket nor a swim jacket is a substitute for proper adult supervision.
Most life jackets, including all of those discussed in this article, are not certified.
Baby Swim Vests
Okay, now that all the fun stuff is over, here is a list of baby swim vests and swimwear.
Speedo children’s vest
Speedo is one of the most popular manufacturers of swimming equipment and accessories. Their children’s line is as popular as the products they sell for the most experienced swimmers. Lots of people love their goggles for kids, water shoes for toddlers and just about everything else they do.
For our smallest swimmers, their Speedo Kids Begin-to-Swim Classic Swim Vest, Speedo has developed a comfortable, adjustable vest for kids ages 2 to 6.
The Speedo swim vest opens and closes at the front and has an additional Velcro closure on the top to keep the vest in place in the water.
Made from soft neoprene (the same material that your open water and triathlon wetsuits are made from), the vest gives your child more mobility in their arms and legs. It is also equipped with a seat belt that wraps around the bottom of the child.
Swimwear for children
For many, swimming in the pool means being outside. When it comes to outdoor pools, there is another consideration for your child’s safety and comfort, and that is sun protection.
Splash About Sun Protection Floatie Suit with half sleeves and long pants. They provide your child with buoyancy and protection from the sun. While not technically a swim vest, it performs many of the same functions as well as providing additional protection.
The swimming suit has a strip of floats around the torso. A total of sixteen individual buoys that provide a flexible and complete landing. Since the Splash About Flotation is more of a costume and not just a vest, this means it will stay on the child. Simply unzip the back zipper to help your child get in and out of it.
The Splash About Flotation is available in three sizes for ages 1-2, 2-4 and 4-6. It comes in 8 different colors and prints for both boys and girls.
MP Swim Method vest
In 2014, the famous American swimmer Michael Phelps and the company Speedo stopped working together. It has been revealed that Phelps will launch his own line of swimming accessories. Since Phelps has two children of his own, the swimwear line has expanded. And it began to include swimming aids for toddlers, including swim vests.
Unlike the Speedo vests, the MP Swim vest distributes buoyancy across the torso, giving the child a more even feeling of buoyancy in the water. This is a more natural feeling, allowing the baby to swim, rather than just bouncing around in the water.
The MP Swim Vest has a handle on the back of the vest to help your child stand steadily in the water. It also has several adjustable straps. It is produced in green blue and pink colors. Vests come in two sizes, designed for children from 2 to 6 years old.
How to choose a children’s swimwear?
Choosing a neck circle
If you start the description according to the age of the child, then the neck circle will be the very first in the list of all auxiliary water devices. It is recommended for children from 4 months and can be used up to 2-3 years. Of course, in this case it will have a different size. So, Baby Swimmer offers circles for babies from birth to 24 months, where the inner diameter is 8 cm and the outer diameter is 40 cm. This category of circles is designed for a weight of 3-15 kg. And for older children, they are with an inner diameter of 9. 8 cm and external — 37 cm (for children from 6 to 36 months).
A neck circle, chosen correctly, helps parents a lot to buy a little baby. The fact is that the circle keeps the child on the surface of the water in such a way that he will never choke or drown. The main condition for safety is the appropriate size of the circle for the age of the baby. Next, you should pay attention to the presence of a chin retainer, which increases reliability and prevents the child from slipping into the water. Modern models of such circles can still have additional fasteners, as well as an adjustable size of the inner diameter of the circle. To all this, an important point when choosing a watercraft is the quality of the inner seam. It should be soft and not irritate the baby’s delicate skin. With the help of a circle for the neck, you can not only bathe, but also teach babies to swim.
Choosing an inflatable pool
For the next age category, children who are already over 6 months old and are already sitting on their own, an inflatable pool will be very useful. On hot summer days, it can be placed directly on the street in the shade. Their selection is also large. There are different sizes. You just need to take into account the age of the child. For the smallest, models with a depth of 15-25 cm are suitable, and from two years old you can take those that are larger. In them, the depth is already about half a meter, and the width is 2 meters. Such pools can be designed even for adults, so to speak, a family option. Among the selection criteria in this case, we can distinguish the following:
the walls of the pool, when inflated, must hold firmly and not fall;
the bottom should also be inflated, which will provide softness of the seat and protection from freezing if the child is small and still sitting. And for older children, it is better to choose a flat bottom that is comfortable to walk on;
the pool must be made of dense quality rubber so that it does not break through at the slightest touch on the uneven surface of the earth.
It is not superfluous to have sun protection in the form of a small roof if the pool is chosen for a small child.
If the choice fell on a large-sized pool, it is still advisable to buy a pump and a drain hose for it. Since it will be very difficult to manually fill it and pour out the water. The presence of a filter that will trap any debris that enters the water will not hurt either.
Choosing an inflatable (water) walker
Many parents are already familiar with such a swimming device as an inflatable walker designed for independent movement of a child through the water. As a rule, they can be bought for children over 1 year old who already hold their back confidently. They are similar to an inflatable circle, only they have a closed bottom with two holes for the legs. The child sits in such a circle, maintaining a vertical position, and with the help of his legs moves a certain distance through the water. When choosing such water walkers, special attention should be paid to their size and convenience, as well as weight and age category. There are those that are intended only for children up to 11 kg or even less. Each product indicates whether it is for a one-year-old child or for a 2-year-old. If the inflatable walkers are not suitable for the child, then it happens that the baby simply turns upside down, which, you see, is life-threatening. Therefore, here you need to pay attention to the quality of the inflatable and its buoyancy. It is important that the child sits in it confidently and firmly. In addition, the seams in the places where the details of the walkers are fastened should be soft and not cause irritation on the baby’s skin.
Choosing an inflatable vest
An inflatable vest can be a better choice than an inflatable walker, as it allows the child to learn to swim faster and not be afraid of being submerged in water. Its meaning lies in the fact that thanks to a vest filled with air, the child is kept on the surface of the water at chest level. The correct size is very important here. The smallest inflatable vest is designed for 2-year-olds. There must also be reliable and strong fasteners that fix the vest on the child, preventing him from drowning. In addition, there should be a high-quality collar that supports the neck above the water.
So, there are vests for all age categories, when choosing, it is advisable to take into account the weight of the child, since each model has its own percentage of buoyancy, which determines the level of keeping a person on the water. If the size is large, then the child will barely peek out of the water, and the vest will rise above his head. It is necessary that the size of the armholes corresponds to the size of the child.
When choosing an inflatable vest, one should also take into account the fact that when using it, the child can be completely immersed in water for a couple of seconds. Therefore, it is intended for those children who are already familiar with the basics of swimming and are not afraid of water.
Choosing armlets
Armlets are available for children from three years old and perform a function similar to an inflatable vest. They also keep the child afloat and allow him to learn to swim faster. There are different types and forms. Their size is also important here, so that they hold well on the forearm and do not slip off. When buying them, you must first try them on for a child and see if they are big for him. And also to make sure of the quality of their production.
There are sleeves of such sizes: 23*15 cm, 19* 19 cm — for children from 3 to 6 years old, 30 * 15 cm, 37 * 22 cm — from 6 to 12 years old (designed for 30-60 kg). Of course, variations are possible, as each manufacturer wants to stand out from the rest.
Choosing an inflatable ring
An inflatable ring is known to everyone and is intended for both adults and children from 3 years old. When choosing, the guideline is its diameter, equal to the circumference of the waist, divided by three. It is more dangerous than all the previous ones, as it can be easily released while swimming and left with nothing. Based on this, it is better to take it to those children who already know how to swim, but still cannot stay on the water for a long time without support. Particular attention should be paid to all seams, since when they are directly in the circle itself, they can rub the baby’s tummy badly.
So, the sizes of circles can be: for children 2-3 years old — 50 cm in diameter, for 3-6 years old — 51-61 cm, for 6-10 years old — from 61 cm or more.
Choosing an air mattress
Air mattresses, like circles, are offered for both adults and children. When choosing a baby mattress, you need to pay attention to its size and the presence of handles that you can hold on to. Such models are made in different colors and shapes (ships, sharks, boats, etc.). Additional convenience will be the presence of bumpers, partially protecting the child from falling into the water. By the way, as a precaution in case the child slips off the mattress, if the baby is still unsteady on the water, it is worth putting on armlets.
Children’s air mattresses are designed for children from three years of age and older. As in the previous cases, they are desirable for use by children who can swim. The sizes differ markedly from different manufacturers and can be as follows: from 3 to 9 years — 76 * 53 cm, 95 * 50 cm; from 5 years old — 183*76 cm, 110*57 cm; and from 8 years old — 152 * 23 cm, 191 * 89 cm, 191 * 71 cm. There is no one standard size for age, it all depends on the characteristics of the child and his preferences.
Choosing inflatable toys
Inflatable toys are available as an addition to all swimming aids. They help to play in the water, allowing the child to relax and get used to the aquatic environment. There are different types and forms. They can be both small and large. These are fish, boats, balls, stars and much more. Here the choice depends only on the desire of the child and his ability to play in the water.
Choosing a noodle
An interesting watercraft is a noodle made in the form of a flexible stick-tube. The noodle helps keep you afloat, you may need more than one. In the water, it will be necessary to check whether one stick is enough or whether a pair is needed to support the weight of the child. Designed only for those children who can swim. It develops the vestibular apparatus and teaches to keep the body on the water.
With the help of special connectors from noodles, you can create various shapes: from a swim ring to rafts of various shapes.
This is the range of boats available today. When choosing them, you also need to consider where you buy them. All products must be licensed. Each inflatable must be made of quality materials, not have a sharp unpleasant odor (which can cause an allergy in a baby). All internal seams should be soft, not rubbing the skin.
These tips are worth listening to and then your vacation will not be overshadowed by unpleasant moments.
Happy sailing!

A large number of devices and devices are provided for this, however, the life jacket has been the most popular for many years. The key function of the vest is to provide buoyancy so that the person’s head is above the surface of the water at all times.
In tourist shops, the choice of such products is very wide — even a fairly experienced person can easily get confused in such a rich assortment. If you decide to purchase this unit, then this rating of the best life jackets of the year will come in handy for you. Here we will analyze the most popular products in detail, as well as provide some tips that will surely help you find the device that is ideal for your needs.
Rating summary: (hide/show)
How to choose the right life jacket in 2022?
All such products come in two varieties depending on the material from which they are made: inflatable and made of foamed polyvinyl chloride. The latter are distinguished by a long service life, additionally protect the human body, softening blows against the bottom or stones, and are characterized by an anatomical shape. Inflatable vests are compact and weigh very little. The outer fabric of any unit is made of synthetic materials that are not sensitive to water, ultraviolet rays, salt, they tolerate strong impacts well, including sharp edges of stones. The vest must necessarily be bright — a person in it will be much easier to detect on the surface of the water.
One of the key parameters of the vest is its buoyancy and volume. The buoyancy of the vest provides high passive safety, but it will not be of much use if the person in the vest cannot paddle towards the shore. In this regard, a vest is selected in such a way that it does not restrict movement too much; for this, products with a volume of 18 to 25 liters will be most suitable, depending on the size of the person.

There are sports vests — they are designed for various rowing sports, when maximum safety is ensured for a person: he has insurance both on the water and on the shore. Accordingly, if he finds himself in the water, then he will not have to swim for too long. Such a product should not hamper movements both in the boat itself and outside it. They make them small and light, they have pockets and hinges.
The so-called nautical vests should keep a person above the surface of the water for as long as possible so that he can not expend too much energy. They often have a pocket for a drinking system and many small pockets for small things. Life jackets for tourism are usually made inflatable, which, when folded, take up a minimum of free space.
When we selected products to include in our review of the best life jackets, we first of all relied on all the factors discussed earlier. However, we additionally studied a lot of feedback from users, including experienced anglers, professional tourists and athletes. This helped us to choose only the highest quality and at the same time affordable models in terms of cost.

choosing an inflatable ring, a vest and more
Swimming season is in full swing. And if your child does not yet know how to swim, it will not be superfluous to take care of purchasing inflatable swimming equipment for him. With them, bathing for the baby will be pleasant and safe.
Children’s inflatable raft
This is a wide, flat, water-stable inflatable structure, usually in the form of some kind of animal or tent.
For the safety of children , the raft has small inflatable sides and handles that you can hold on to while swimming. The raft accommodates from 1 to 2-3 children. On the raft, the child is only a passenger, he will not be able to manage it on his own.
Inflatable ring
Inflatable ring is perhaps the most common watercraft, although it cannot be called the most convenient and safe. There are many circles. Models for the smallest are equipped with sewn-in panties so that the baby does not slip out of it by accident. There are models with built-in rustlers and rattles — insignificant, but pleasant additions.
It is much more important to choose the correct wheel size. The assumption that the larger the circle, the safer it is, is erroneous. The circle should tightly cover the swimmer’s waist, otherwise the child will simply slip out of it in the water. But circles in the form of animals, however strange it may seem at first glance, in some cases have undeniable advantages over the classical form of a circle. The ability to hold on to the head of an inflatable animal makes babies more stable in the water. Just choose a model so that the animal head does not block the view of the little swimmer.
Inflatable vest
An excellent alternative to an inflatable ring. In it, the child feels more comfortable, he can row in the water on his own, the speed of his movement will be noticeably higher than on a circle or a mattress.
Also, from a safety point of view, this is a more reliable option, provided that the vest is properly fitted. The size of the vest should exactly match the age of your child and tightly cover the baby’s body. Do not under any circumstances buy inflatable vest larger size — for growth. If you did everything right, there will be no limit to the delight of the child from swimming in a vest. You can even dive in it.
Inflatable sleeves
Perhaps this is the smallest watercraft. But not all children love them just for this reason. It is hard for some to believe that such a small thing will support them in the water as well as a voluminous circle. But this is true.
Sleeves perfectly insure the child in the water. With their help, he will be able to swim almost for real. That is, placing the body horizontally, and not, as in previous cases, vertically in the water.
Sleeves must be worn on shore. They should be put on with some effort and as high as possible so that they do not slip off the child’s hand when he enters the water. But at the same time, they should not squeeze their hands, so as not to cause discomfort.
General Safety Rules
- Never leave a child alone in the water for a minute. A circle or an inflatable raft can capsize at any moment — from a sudden movement of a child, from an accidental wave … Playing in the water, children lose their vigilance, but adults should not allow this in any case. After all, such carelessness can cost the life of your baby. The same applies to those cases when a child bathes in a vest or armlets. A child can choke on water at depth or near the shore, regardless of whether he is wearing a swimming device or not.
- Before swimming and each time after it, carefully check the tightness of all seams, all inflatable valves. Valves must be tightly closed.
- Do not dry inflatables in the sun. This can lead to depressurization of the seams. Better put them in the shade.
How to choose the right boat?
- The inflatable float you purchase must be exactly the right size for your child. It must be indicated without fail on the packaging.
- When choosing an inflatable ring, vest or sleeves, you also need to try them on. It is necessary to try on in an inflated state.
- Pay attention to the seams. It is better that they are internal, then during bathing they will not rub the skin of the child. If the seams are still external, check that their edge is as soft as possible. Try to choose a product that does not consist of one camera, but of several. Then, during bathing, if the inflatable valve of one of the chambers accidentally opens, the others will still keep the child on the surface of the water. They are longer and more inconvenient to inflate, but safety is paramount.
- Inflatable valves must be equipped with an anti-tamper function. That is, if the valve suddenly opens in the water, the air will descend very slowly, you will have time to notice that something is wrong before the baby swallows water.

Colorful vest very comfortable for the baby: it does not rub the skin, does not jump up in the water and holds the baby’s head well. The two air chambers and the collar are independent of each other, which is a kind of security measure. With a possible puncture on one side, the second will keep the baby afloat, and the adult will have time to react.
If the vest is chosen according to its size, then it will not ride up in the water, and the child will be able to swim in it as he likes: on his back, on his stomach, and even turn around. The chambers are easy to inflate and the valves hold air securely — no regular inflation is required.
Pros:
- Bright design;
- Inflatable collar;
- Durable and pleasant to the touch vinyl;
- Supports 18 to 23 kg;
- Reliable valves.
Faults:
- Do not leave in direct sunlight.
The model is suitable for children aged 3 to 5 years to swim in the pool or in the sea, but only under the supervision of an adult.

Light and convenient vest is ideal for training swimming. It gives the child complete freedom of movement, and ensures safety at the level of European standards. The unisex design is suitable for both girls and boys.
The product is not recommended for use as a life-saving device — it is designed exclusively for learning to swim under adult supervision. The vest does not rub the skin, although it has rough seams. It is quickly removed and put on, and also does not restrict the movement of the child on land, so the baby can play on the shore right in it.
Advantages:
- Large valve;
- Thoughtful design and bright colors;
- Ultra compact when folded;
- Thick PVC.
Drawbacks:
- Expensive for an inflatable vest;
- Does not allow you to leave the baby unattended.
A good option for teaching children from 5 years old. It allows the child to swim in any style.

Made of durable vinyl, it is designed for a chest circumference of approx. 70 cm, but can be adjusted by a few centimeters with the buckles. The inflatable collar keeps the baby’s head securely above the water. The material is of high quality and does not cause allergies in the child.
Due to the possibility of adjusting the volume, the vest will suit children of any size. The collar may interfere with the view somewhat, but the baby’s head will always be at the top so that he does not choke on water.
Advantages:
- Interesting design and color that can be seen well in the water;
- Safe materials;
- Easy to transport;
- Inflates quickly;
- Safe hold of the head above the water.
Shortcomings:
- There are defective vests.
Suitable for boys aged 3 to 6 years. This is a very affordable vest that will definitely work the summer season.
Which life jacket is better to buy
When choosing a vest for an adult or a child, the user’s weight should be taken into account, as well as the type of recreation or activity on the water.
If the rescue equipment is purchased for winter time, then you need to take into account the additional volumes that warm clothing will create. For children, a vest is bought not for growth, but for the current size.
Athletes’ vests should be light but with high lifting power. At the same time, neoprene models additionally soften impacts on the water, preventing serious injuries. They are worth a closer look to fans of high-speed skiing.

Floats vs. 90 swim jackets
When you’re looking for items to keep your child safe in the water, you’ll find swim trunks, swim jackets and life jackets.
The main difference between a swim vest and a float is that a swim vest attaches to the child, while a float does not. You strap or tie your child to a swim vest so that they cannot be easily unfastened from it.
Floats are what the child holds onto or slides into their arms. They can slip off, especially when water makes them slippery.
This makes life jackets much safer than swimming trunks, which can be easily lost in the water.
Life jackets vs. swimming vests
Swimming vests are used to help people swim while they are learning to swim. They provide extra buoyancy so the student is helped to stay afloat while working with their arms and legs. As a rule, they are less bulky than a life jacket.
Children’s life jackets are specially designed to keep the wearer afloat with their head above the water. That way, if they can’t swim, they’ll stay afloat until help arrives. (one) . While some life jackets do this, not all of them do.
In addition to being considered a lifejacket, the item must be approved by the Coast Guard. Meanwhile, a swim vest does not have to be certified by the Coast Guard, although many do.
How to choose the best baby swim vests
There are a number of things to consider when choosing a swim vest for your little one.
Safety
Safety should be your number one concern. Here are some things you should always check when looking for the best swim vests for toddlers.
- Always choose a swim vest from a reputable manufacturer.
- Make sure your little one can’t easily remove the swim vest.
- Look for swim vests with additional fasteners such as an under body strap.
- Check if the swim vest can support your child’s weight.
- Never leave your baby unattended in or near water. A swim vest is not a substitute for close supervision.
Comfort
Make sure that the swim vest does not ride up under the child’s neck and is made of materials that do not rub.
Don’t buy a swim vest that’s too big in the hope that your child will be able to use it longer. At best, a swim vest that is too large will be uncomfortable and distract from learning to swim. At worst, it will be dangerous.
Size
Although swim vests usually have a recommended age range, double check that your child’s weight is within the recommended range.
This is not just a pertinent question. Swimming vests are designed to keep a child of a certain weight buoyant. If your child is over this weight, he will not swim.
Material
Swimming vests are most often made of neoprene or other artificial fabric. Read the label and make sure the swim vest you choose can be easily cleaned and dried.
Also be sure to check the thickness of the material at the seams and where the fasteners are attached. Make sure they are thick enough not to tear with frequent use.
UVA/B protection
UVA/B protection swim vest provides an extra layer of sun protection. This is very important as the effects of exposure to the sun at a young age can be felt later in life. One sunburn that blistered as a child can double your risk of skin cancer1527 (two) .
Coast Guard Approval
Coast Guard approved children’s life jackets may also serve as a life jacket for boating or other water sports or recreational activities. (3) .
