The Chinese Gender Chart: Does it really work?

Having a baby is such an exciting time filled with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty.

Expectant parents spend a lot of their time wondering what they will be in for when their new bundle arrives. But many parents-to-be think most about the sex of their future child/ren – some to the point where they will try just about ANYTHING to get the little boy or little girl they’ve always wanted (including trying different foods and different positions!).

But there is one prediction method that has been around for centuries: The Chinese Gender Chart.

Has it stood the test of time for a reason?

What is the Chinese Gender Chart?

Emerging around the 1600s, the Chinese Gender Chart has been used in China to help families predict – and even plan – the sex of their new baby.

The chart uses the mother’s lunar age and date of conception in its calculations. The use of the lunar age (as opposed to the dates on our current Gregorian calendar) is an important traditional custom for the Chinese nation, which considers babies to be one year old at birth (counting the months of pregnancy as the first year of life from 0-1).

The chart is believed to have been created for the imperial family of the Qing dynasty to help them conceive sons, for the usual reasons of carrying on the family name and for working.

How accurate is the Chinese Gender Chart?

As a prediction tool used for hundreds of years, it would be surprising if this chart had no validity whatsoever. However, there is no science behind the method, and even polling a range of mothers seems to give a 50-50 chance of the chart being accurate.

Here are some of the answers from the mums over at Baby Hints and Tips:

  • Right for me!! Only one child though.    Jemma
  •  Out of 4 kids, it was right with 2 of them.     Bek
  •   I’ve had 1 right 1 wrong with it   Tan
  •  First right (a girl) and second right (a boy) (I did get a bonus girl, twins, but the following month was a girl on the chart).    Katherine
  •  Correct with my mother – it said both my sister and I were girls and right for me – it said my son was a boy and this pregnancy too. Ultrasound confirms it.    Sarah
  •  Bub #1 wrong, bub #2 wrong.   Deb
  •  Wrong for both my children.   Amanda
  •  Yep, right for me and 5 of my friends.   Emma
  •  Wrong, Wrong, Wrong    Kylie
  •  Right for first, wrong for second … So 50/50 lol    Brooke

So why don’t you give it a try and let us know below if it was accurate for you? There are a range of tools and apps available to help calculate your lunar age and date of conception for prediction purposes, including easy to read charts. And if you’re not quite sure what your lunar age is, you can calculate it here.

35 Gender Prediction Tests: How To Find Out If It’s A Boy Or A Girl?

PREGNANCY

Last modified on Thursday 5 May 2022

If you’re dying to know your baby’s sex but it’s too early to tell, try one of these gender prediction tests, from the Ancient Chinese Gender Chart to Nub Theory

The NHS says that the only reliable way to find out your baby’s sex is with an ultrasound, typically around the twentieth week of your pregnancy. That’s a long time to wait if you’re feeling impatient!

You might want to give some of these traditional gender prediction tests a go while you wait. Some say they’re old wives’ tales. Some swear they’re spookily accurate. Which one will you try?

Many find this Chinese chart spookily accurate. It works by calculating age at conception with the number of the month you conceived in – an odd number means you expect a boy and an even one a girl.

Some Chinese gender calendars use your lunar age, instead of your regular age. Your lunar age is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, so it’s: the current lunar year – (your lunar birth year +1).

Indian gender prediction charts generally work the same way as the Chinese chart.

Is your bump low and out at the front? Some say this means you’re carrying a boy. A high bump is said to mean you’re carrying a girl.

What’s your bump looking like?

If you’re suffering morning sickness in the first 12 weeks, some say this indicates you’re carrying a girl. If the sickness strikes a little later, some say you’re expecting a boy.

Some also believe boys make you sick in the morning, and girls in the evening.

Take a look at your 12-week ultrasound scan. Look at the ‘nub’ between your baby’s legs.

If it points upwards by more than 30 degrees, it’s a boy, if it’s not pointing up that high, it’s a girl.

If your right breast looks bigger than the left, it’s a boy, and vice versa it’s a girl!

Time to take a good long look in the mirror!

Similar to the Chinese gender chart, the Mayan gender predictor technique comes down to calendars and basic math.

Just take a look at how old you were when you conceived and the year it happened. If both numbers are either odd or even, you’re carrying a girl. If one is odd and the other is even, it’s a baby boy.

Tie your ring to a piece of thread and hold it gently above your bump. If it swings from side to side, you’re having a boy, and if it moves in a circle, it’s a girl.

If your baby’s heartbeat is under 140 beats per minute – it’s a boy. Anything above that – it’s a girl!

(Although heart rates have no relevance until labour and birth when a girl’s generally beats faster than a boy’s).

They like to move it, move it …

Some think an energetic baby in the womb indicates a boy and a chilled foetus means you’re carrying a girl.

Pick up a single key. If you pick up the key by the top part (the round part) then you’re carrying a boy, if you go for the narrow bottom part, then you’re having a girl. If you pick up the key in the middle, you’re having twins!

Ahh … could this be the key to it all?

Are you blooming with glossy locks and rosy skin? It’s a boy. Dull hair and an outbreak of zits – it’s a girl.

Some claim this one’s because a girl ‘steals her mother’s beauty’ …

Sugar and spice and all things nice … what are you craving at the moment?

Some believe that it’s cravings that hold the key to whether you’re having a boy or a girl. ..

If you’ve developed a penchant for sweet things then, according to the old wives’ tale, it must be a girl!

Craving cheese or salty and savoury foods?

According to the old wives’ tale – it must be a boy!

If you eat a clove of garlic and the smell comes out through your pores, you’re having a boy. If no smell is detected through your skin, the prediction is that it’s a girl.

Who knew?!

When someone asks you to show your hands, if you present them palms down it’s a boy and palms up means you’re expecting a girl.

Some say if your hands are dry, you’re having a boy, and if they’re soft, you’re having a girl.

Will you eat the heel or crust of the bread? If you will, you’re carrying a boy, if you refuse, it’s a girl (or perhaps you’re just not hungry!)

If the hair on your legs is growing faster than ever, it’s a boy, and if it’s the same, then you’re carrying a girl.

According to this theory, you can guess your baby’s sex by studying their skull shape on your scan picture.

Though there’s no evidence to back this one up, its always fun having a guess! Read more about the skull theory.

Are you suffering from acne? Legend has it that blemishes and breakouts signify a little girl.

Put some baking soda into a disposable cup, then pee in it. If the baking soda fizzes, it’s going to be a boy!

If this old-fashioned gender test is to be believed, a little boy will be very inquisitive in your growing pregnant belly if you’re having a girl. If he doesn’t seem to care, then you’re having a boy.

Some people believe if you conceive after midnight, it’ll be a girl, while making love during the new moon means you’ll have a boy.

So you’re definitely putting on weight, but has your partner been packing on the pounds, too? If so, you may be expecting a girl.

Have someone tape a spoon under one chair and a fork under another without you seeing which is which.

If you sit on the chair with the spoon, you’re having a girl. The fork? It’s a boy.

Another old gender test claims that if a pregnant lady picks up her napkin by the edges, a boy is on the way.

Have you ever heard?!

Apparently so … it’s thought that if your partner sits on the roof near the chimney for several hours before intercourse, you’ll have a boy.

An old strange American myth claims you can shake off your baby’s ‘extra equipment’ by taking your buggy over rough roads.

Good grief!

Are both of you nauseous? Some cultures believe if the dad is feeling queasy, too, you’re expecting a boy.

If you’re already a mum, could your youngest child hold the key to predicting their sibling’s gender?

With the hairline test, look at the back of your youngest child’s head, lifting up their hair so you can clearly see their hairline.

If the hairline is flat, your baby will have the same gender as their closest sibling. If it comes to a point, your baby will be the opposite sex.

You might notice a new dark line, which extends vertically over your bump. This is called the linea nigra, and some say that its length could determine your baby’s gender.

If your linea nigra starts from bellow your belly button, then you might be having a girl. If it starts below your rib cage, then it could be a boy.

How high was your blood pressure before you became pregnant? One study suggests that where your blood pressure levels are six months before you conceive could affect your baby’s sex.

The theory goes that women with high blood pressure are more likely to bring a baby boy to term, while mums with low blood pressure are more likely to have a girl (though the study suggests that any effect is likely very small).

Have a look at which way your pillow on your bed faces.

If you sleep with your pillow facing north, then legend has it that you’ll have a boy. If your pillow faces south, then you’ll have a girl.

They say your eyes are the window to the soul … and they might have something to say about your baby’s sex too!

Look at yourself in the mirror for one minute. If your pupils dilate, then you could be having a boy. If not, it means you’re having a baby girl.

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a 100% accurate baby gender predictor.

The best way to find out the sex of your baby? Wait for your scan!

You can usually find out the sex of your baby around the 18-20 week mark at your anomaly or 20-week scan.

table PK-900E

From about the 16th week of pregnancy, women begin
experience constant stress on the back. The baby grows and develops in the tummy,
and the muscles of the back and the spine of the expectant mother
get tired more and more, especially if a woman does not stop working and cannot
rest at any time when the body requires it. During this period, women
care should be taken to relieve excess tension from the back. Many
pregnant women are happy to switch to remote work through
Internet, which means they spend a lot of time in front of the monitor. To say that an ordinary rectangular round table is for
a pregnant woman is not suitable — it means not to say anything. He is extremely dangerous!

Prolonged sitting causes fatigue, headaches,
dizziness. Poor posture leads to problems with the spine,
especially in the region of the cervical vertebrae and lower back, as well as neurological
complications, numbness of the extremities and even heart disease. These tables are completely
are not adapted for permanent work, and for pregnant women — and at all
contraindicated!

Can pregnant women drink coffee and how much: benefits and harms

    • Can pregnant women drink coffee

One of the controversial issues that arise among expectant mothers and doctors watching them is whether pregnant women can drink coffee? Some categorically say “no”, while others, on the contrary, advise you not to deny yourself the pleasure of a cup of good natural coffee.

Coffee for pregnant women: arguments against

      1. Coffee beans contain caffeine, which is known to stimulate mental and physical activity and increase blood pressure. Particularly sensitive women in position may experience unreasonable nervousness and insomnia. With a large amount of caffeine, heart palpitations can appear not only in the mother, but also in the fetus.
      2. Caffeine accelerates the secretion of stomach acid, which sometimes leads to heartburn. To prevent this, it is recommended to add milk or cream to the cup and not to brew too strong a drink.
      3. When caffeine is consumed, calcium is washed out of the body, which is responsible for the strength and density of bone tissue. Bone loss is possible with large amounts of caffeine, but in pregnant women there is an increased consumption of calcium due to the formation of the skeleton in the fetus, so even a few cups of coffee can have a negative effect. When drinking coffee, it is recommended to increase the amount of calcium-containing foods — milk, cottage cheese, natural yoghurts.
      4. Coffee reduces appetite, which is why those who follow a dietary diet drink it with such pleasure, however, in the case of pregnancy, this effect can do a disservice, because expectant mothers need good nutrition.

Coffee for pregnant women: arguments “for”

      1. With weakness, dizziness and low blood pressure, a cup of coffee will invigorate and eliminate such symptoms.
      2. Caffeine stimulates the digestive tract, which leads to faster digestion of food. For pregnant women, this may seem important, especially in the second and third trimesters, when many are overweight.
      3. Coffee beans in large quantities contain antioxidants that increase the body’s defense against external factors and sharpen attention — the drowsiness characteristic of pregnant women will instantly disappear after a cup of coffee.
      4. A cup of your favorite drink cheers up and colors the day with bright emotional colors. Often, the pleasure of your favorite drink is much more effective than many vitamin nutritional supplements, so doctors do not recommend pregnant women to radically change their eating habits.

      Coffee norm for pregnant women

Everything is good in moderation, especially coffee for pregnant women. You can and should drink it: if the expectant mother feels good, there is no reason to refuse coffee. Of course, it is better to limit yourself to 2-3 servings per day, and avoid too strong ristretto or double espresso.

According to WHO, pregnant women should limit their daily caffeine intake to 300 mg, and some European countries recommend not to exceed 200 mg per day, which means no more than 2-3 coffees. It is better if it is cappuccino, latte or mocha.

      Expert opinion
Caffeine is found not only in coffee, but also in tea, and in green it is almost twice as much as in a coffee drink. When calculating the daily intake of caffeine, pregnant women need to know that the stimulant is also found in dark chocolate, mate tea, Coca-Cola.
Those who, nevertheless, decided to give up coffee during pregnancy and lactation, can switch to cocoa or hot chocolate — these drinks contain caffeine in microdoses that have practically no effect on the body.

And for those who continue to consume latte or cappuccino in reasonable quantities, we offer to buy coffee in the Russian Tea Company online store.
