In full accordance with the traditional scheme of the novel, Leucippe and Clitophon fall in love with each other and run away from home, fearing obstacles from their parents, because. A special place among Greek novelists is occupied by Long, whose novel “Daphnis and Chloe” gained the greatest fame in world literature. The date of writing this work is not precisely established; in recent scientific studies, it is brought closer to the 2nd century AD. There is no information about the author of the novel, whose very name also causes conflicting interpretations. The main theme of the story is the depiction of the love experiences of young men and women brought up by shepherds and leading a shepherd’s lifestyle, who are patronized by shepherd deities. Noteworthy is the closeness of the plot motifs of Long’s novel to the new comedy, in which the motif of «abandoned and found child» plays an important role. In Long, this motif is complicated by the introduction of two abandoned children, a boy fed by a goat and brought up by the goatherd Lamont, and two years later, the shepherd Dryas discovers a girl fed by a sheep in the grotto of nymphs. According to the conspicuous signs left with the children, both of them were planted by wealthy parents. Heliodorus, who has a good rhetorical education, strives to demonstrate as best as possible the characteristic philosophical tendencies of his time. The tendency inherent in Heliodorus to an abundance of religious, mythological and philosophical reasoning in his novel predetermined the success that his work enjoyed in the era of the Byzantine Empire. A Russian translation of Heliodor’s novel appeared for the first time in the 18th century. under the heading: “The image of innocent love, or the terrible adventure of the Ethiopian princess Chariclea and Theagenes the Thessalian”.
