Evoking feelings of nature and growth, Chloe is a very ancient name that is popular among newborn girls. Read on to find out about its origins, meaning, and more.

What Does Chloe Mean?

The name Chloe means “blooming,” “fertility,” or “young green shoot.”

Chloe stems from the Greek root word “*ǵʰelh₃-,” which refers to the green stems, shoots, and foliage on plants in spring (1). The English prefix “chloro-” (chlorine, chlorophyll, etc.) comes from the same Greek root.

Chloe’s meaning is rooted deeply in nature and change. The Greek root word referred to plants that grew during the spring. That was when flowers finally began to grow after many infertile months. Therefore, Chloe doesn’t just mean “blooming” and “fertility,” but blooming and fertility in a time of infertility.

What Is the Origin of the Name Chloe?

The name Chloe originated in Ancient Greece, where it was a common girls’ name. Across Greece, Chloe was used in works of fiction and their mythological pantheon.

Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest and agriculture, often used the byname Chloe. When using that, Demeter could invoke ever-lasting fertility and growth. Demeter is considered to be the same deity as the Roman Ceres and the Anatolian Cybele.

Aside from Demeter, Chloe’s other prominent appearance was in Longus’s novel “Daphnis and Chloe.” It told of two young people from the isle of Lesbos who get separated, learn to love across many adventures, and are eventually reunited and married.

It was one of history’s first stories to use “true love’s kiss” as a plot point, roughly 1,800 years before becoming a Disney staple.

The name Chloe also appeared in Christianity’s New Testament. 1 Corinthians 1:11 mentions “the house of Chloe, a prominent woman among the Corinthian Saints.” Corin was a notable city in Greece, so the appearance of the name Chloe in this part of the Bible makes a lot of sense.

How Popular Is the Name Chloe?

Chloe is a very popular name in many countries and has been since the early 1990s. According to the Social Security Administration, Chloe ranked the 27th most used girls’ name in the United States in 2020 (2). Chloe was at its most popular from 2009 through 2010, when it ranked as the ninth most used girls’ name.

Globally, the name Chloe was most popular from the 1990s to the 2010s. Chloe was Northern Ireland’s most used girls’ name from 1997 through 2002. In 2013, Chloe ranked as Australia’s fourth most-used newborn girls’ name.

Chloe was decidedly more popular at the turn of the millennium. Indeed, it was one of the most common names for members of Generation Z but will be slightly less common for Generation A.

How Do I Pronounce Chloe?

The name Chloe is pronounced, “KLOH-ee.” Chloe opens with a “k” sound and rhymes with “snowy.”

If you hit a nerve, it explodes easily. He does not like pressure from outside, he is offended for a long time. We are absolutely sure that they are special, they know everything better than anyone and they are simply obliged to explain to you why you are wrong and in what aspects. Ideal wives. But Virgo men — write wasted. The most boring and illogical creatures on the planet. Sex, food, sports — everything is on schedule, and being a minute late is punished by a long lecture on the meaning of life. They do not explain the reason for their behavior and are not going to: who are you in general to talk to you? They love it when they rush about and wipe their snot, and they just love to suffer in public to the point of insanity — “how poor and unhappy I am, have pity on me immediately.”
  • Zodiac sign Capricorn. This sign knows how to use all the chances in life, is prone to leadership, loves to learn, develop, stand firmly on its feet and go towards the goal. Capricorn does not like to take risks, can become an inveterate pessimist and close due to self-doubt. He does not really know how to rest, be lazy and relax, considering this time wasted. God forbid you come to Capricorns for advice: you are provided with at least an hour of lectures. This is because they always know how to get out of any situation (or pretend to know), and they will tell you in detail, tediously and with examples where you are wrong and how to live on. He devotes himself to work as much as possible, because he simply does not know how to sit on the fifth point evenly and do nothing. And if you have to, it starts to wither. 4. Ancient novel and its origin. Long’s novel Daphnis and Chloe as a bucolic novel

Long’s novel Daphnis and Chloe as a bucolic novel

    term paper

As a genre of ancient Greek literature, the novel took shape at the end of II — early. 1st century BC. The study of the novel should begin with an understanding of terminological issues. While for the main types of literature — epic, lyric, drama — Greek terms and definitions that arose in antiquity are used, the novel — the only one of all the genres of ancient Greek literature — has not a Greek, but a medieval name. The French combination la conte roman, which appeared in the Middle Ages, began to be called any poetic work written not in Latin, but in some kind of Romance language. At the same time, it was not only about courtly literature, which includes European medieval chivalric novels and poetry, but also numerous pseudo-historical and legendary works written in folk languages. Subsequently, the first part of this phrase, translated into Russian as “novel narration”, disappeared, and the adjective roman remained in use, which acquired an independent meaning, and from the 16th century. entrenched in the narrative writings of ancient Greek prose, now called novels.

The ancient novelists themselves gave their works various titles, indicating a connection with the literary genres established by that time, such as drama, comedy, history, etc. These are the Greek words “dramaticon”, “logos”, “byblos” — (in relation to the Roman novel — the Latin “plot”).

As evidenced by the variety of names and some vagueness of the genre definitions of the ancient novel, the question of the origin of this genre cannot be unambiguously resolved. The matter, of course, is not reduced to disagreements of a terminological nature, although repeated attempts to give a modern definition of the genre “antique novel”, according to the recognition of numerous researchers, lead to significant contradictions and are doomed to failure. It is hardly possible to find a sufficiently capacious and stable definition that would reflect the features of the content and compositional structure of all representatives of the genre under consideration and correspond to its aesthetic essence. This is all the more unlikely when it comes to attempts to determine the place that this genre occupies in the history of the general literary process, and assess its subsequent influence on the development of the modern novel.

The views of researchers on this issue are often diametrically opposed: from a complete denial of the right to call ancient Greek novels by this term and a corresponding denial of any connection with a later, even medieval, novel, to an assertion about the undoubted influence of the ancient novel on the European psychological novel through adventurous novel of the 17th-18th centuries, based on its ancient Greek source.

Originating in the era of Hellenism, the ancient novel reached its highest flowering and distribution in the era of the Roman Empire. Being formed in the conditions of the decline of ancient society, the novel reflected the features of its time. Surviving to this day in full or known from brief retellings and minor fragments, the novels show a close plot similarity, which makes it possible to single out a common plot scheme, in the center of which is a young couple in love of extraordinary beauty. Having fallen in love with each other at first sight, a young man and a girl (in earlier novels they manage to get married) due to various circumstances must part and, in separation, overcome a wide variety of obstacles one by one: they suffer shipwreck, captivity and slavery to robbers or pirates, are subjected to all kinds of imaginary deaths, finally, experience numerous claims from unwanted applicants for their love. At the same time, one of the prerequisites for the plot scheme is that the hero and heroine must remain faithful to each other. Fate rewards them with a happy deliverance from all these misfortunes, the novel ends with a meeting and reunion of lovers.

In the II century. n. e. the genre of the novel reaches such a degree of development that there are attempts to parody some genre costs and even “self-parodies” arise, an example of which is Achilles Tatius’s novel Leucippe and Clitophon. Unlike his predecessors, Achilles Tatius transfers the action of his novel to a purely modern setting and narrates on behalf of one of the main characters of Clitophon. In the house of his father from Byzantium, where the war is going on, the cousin of Clitophon Leucippe with her mother arrives. In full accordance with the traditional scheme of the novel, Leucippe and Clitophon fall in love with each other and run away from home, fearing obstacles from their parents, because. Clitophon is engaged to another girl. The fugitives are accompanied by a close friend and relative of Clitophon, Clinius, they are subjected to the entire list of trials traditional for the Greek novel: shipwreck, captivity by robbers, from which they manage to free themselves. In Alexandria, Leucippe is kidnapped by the robber Chaereus, who has fallen in love with her, while Clitophon’s love is coveted by the wealthy widow Melita. Clitophon, confident that Leucippe is not alive, because. he saw with his own eyes her execution, as it turns out, staged, agrees to a new marriage, but then Melita’s husband Fersander, who was considered dead, unexpectedly returns home.

The image of the main character Clitophon, imprisoned twice, beaten three times by Fersander, cowardly and cowardly, ready to betray people close to him, appears before the reader in a parody reduced and in a comic form. Akin to him and Leucippe. For the first time in a Greek novel, a completely new, far from idealized couple appears, endowed with exceptional external data, but with clearly anti-heroic, immoral features. Achilles Tatius also uses other motifs typical of the novel for parodic purposes, such as, for example, a trial or the motif of disguise, the comic orientation of which is especially noticeable in the story of Clitophon dressing up in the dress of Melita in order to escape from imprisonment (VI, 5). While retaining a purely outward resemblance to other novels, Achilles Tatius sneers at the cliches of the Greek novel that had developed by this period, clearly hoping that the reader will be able to distinguish new features in familiar material and appreciate them.

A special place among Greek novelists is occupied by Long, whose novel “Daphnis and Chloe” gained the greatest fame in world literature. The date of writing this work is not precisely established; in recent scientific studies, it is brought closer to the 2nd century AD. There is no information about the author of the novel, whose very name also causes conflicting interpretations. The main theme of the story is the depiction of the love experiences of young men and women brought up by shepherds and leading a shepherd’s lifestyle, who are patronized by shepherd deities. Noteworthy is the closeness of the plot motifs of Long’s novel to the new comedy, in which the motif of «abandoned and found child» plays an important role. In Long, this motif is complicated by the introduction of two abandoned children, a boy fed by a goat and brought up by the goatherd Lamont, and two years later, the shepherd Dryas discovers a girl fed by a sheep in the grotto of nymphs. According to the conspicuous signs left with the children, both of them were planted by wealthy parents. In the course of the development of the action, the noble origin of young people brought up by foster parents will be revealed.

When the boy Daphnis is fifteen years old and the girl named Chloe is thirteen, their tutors send young people to pasture herds of goats and sheep. Daphnis and Chloe are gradually embraced by a feeling of love unknown to them until now. Unlike other novelists, who traditionally depict in their works a sudden love feeling that arises at first sight, Long shows a gradual, more psychologically motivated process of Daphnis and Chloe’s rapprochement. As the well-known translator and researcher of this genre A.N. Egunov, “Long transfers the motive of separation from the outside inward, motivating a kind of “separation” with the innocence of the characters (Egunov A.N. Heliodor and the Greek novel. Heliodor. Ethiopia. M.-L., 1932, p. 50).

Long avoids oriental exoticism, his heroes almost never leave the outskirts of Mitylene on about. Lesvos, where the novel takes place; adventures play an episodic, secondary role here. The main sympathies of the author are on the side of the people of rural labor, whom he contrasts with the rich loafers from the city. Long does not play a decisive role in the figures of undesirable contenders for the love of a hero or heroine, traditional for the novel in general. In the novel Daphnis and Chloe, this is Dorkon, a shepherd in love with Chloe, who is killed by Tyrian pirates who attacked the coastal meadows and captured Daphnis. The flute, given by the wounded Dorkon to Chloe, helps her save Daphnis, because, having heard the familiar sounds of the flute, Dorkon’s herd rushes to the shore and capsizes the enemy’s ship. Daphnis, who escaped death, returns to Chloe.

Young people are subjected to new trials in connection with a raid on the coastal fields of Mitylene by the inhabitants of Methymne, who steal the herd of Daphnis and kidnap Chloe. Daphnis himself, accused of the death of the metimnean ship and beaten by the townspeople, is saved by his fellow villagers, standing up for the young man. In response to the accusations of the Metymneans, who reproached Daphnis for the death of the ship, on which there was a lot of money and expensive cargo, Daphnis delivers a restrained and dignified speech, undoubtedly testifying to the author’s sympathy for his hero (II, 16). Believing the false accusations of the town’s rake, the citizens of Methymna send an army to raid the coastal fields of the Mytilenes. The warriors captured rich booty, among the people who were captured was Chloe, who, like a goat or a sheep, was driven, whipped with a twig (II, 20).

Despite certain features of the realistic depiction of the picture of the military raid and the presence of other well-aimed observations, there are many fairy-tale elements in Long’s novel, such as the episode of Chloe’s rescue with the assistance of Pan, which inspired fear in the invaders with the terrible sound of the flute, wolf voices of sheep, the fact that for no reason, the oars broke and the anchors of the ships did not rise from the seabed. Having sorted everything out, the citizens of Methymna returned the stolen goods to the Mytilenians and made peace. Unconvincing and going back to a fairy tale is the explanation of how Daphnis got rich by accidentally finding a purse with a large sum of money on the seashore.

Another hallmark of Long’s narrative technique is the introduction of bucolic motifs and beautiful descriptions of nature into his love story. Pictures of rural holidays, winter hunting, the beauty of a flowering garden, an apple forgotten on a tree branch, the spring awakening of nature give the novel “Daphnis and Chloe” a special sound, testify to a fundamentally new understanding of nature and the place that a person occupies against the background of this nature. A certain symmetry, long noticed by the researchers of Long’s novel, characterizes not only the composition of the work, but is also felt in the character of the characters (Daphnis-Astyl), in the general ideological and thematic orientation of the novel, the author of which contrasts the vicious and immoral life of the townspeople with the highly moral and harmonious life of rural residents, peasants and shepherds living in the bosom of nature.

Long, an excellent stylist and master of artistic expression, demonstrates excellent rhetorical education, which he combines with a high aesthetic goal. A special role in the novel is played by monologues used to reveal the psychology of the main characters. The mood of the characters and their surroundings are well conveyed by the art of rhythmic prose, the beauty and musicality of the language of Long’s work, allowing its author to bring individual prose fragments closer to poetry or a poem in prose. Long’s novel Daphnis and Chloe, one of the best examples of late Greek narrative prose, had a significant impact on European literature, becoming the prototype of «pastoral novels». This work, which evoked enthusiastic responses from Goethe, who called for re-reading it every year, is also a constant success with the modern reader.

The largest novel in terms of volume that has come down to us is Heliodor’s «Ethiopica», dating from the second half of the 4th century BC. AD Heliodor’s novel completes the history of the genre evolution of the ancient Greco-Roman novel. According to the observations of scientists of recent years, three characteristic features of Heliodor’s «Ethiopica» make it specific against the background of other works of the genre under consideration: compositional construction, when the very first book of the novel introduces the reader into the middle of events — in medias res, a technique characteristic of the classical epic; the «serious nature» of the novel, manifested in the author’s interest in religious, mythological, philosophical, literary and art-related topics; finally, a special, “ethnic” position of Heliodor, as N.P. Zembatov, endowing all the Greeks represented in the novel with one degree or another of deceit, while barbarians, even villains, “are endowed with a trait of innocence” (Zembatova N.P. Heliodor’s novel “Ethiopica” and its place in the history of the genre / Ancient Romance. M. : Science, 1969, p. 99).

The action of «Ethiopian», numbering 10 books, opens with a scene on a deserted shore at the mouth of the Nile. Not far from the ship abandoned by people, a girl named Chariklea is busy over a young man stretched out with no signs of life. She tells the leader of the robbers who captured the ship what happened to her and her lover named Theagen before he was wounded. The heroine herself, the adopted daughter of the Delphic priest Charicles, grew up in Delphi. Here she was met and loved by the handsome Theagenes, who arrived from Thessaly. In full accordance with the traditional scheme of the novel, complicated, as it was with Long, by the motif of the “abandoned child”, the characters of “Ethiopica” fall in love with each other and secretly board the ship and leave the city. The reason for the flight is the desire of Charicles, the adoptive father of Chariclea, to marry her to his nephew. Young people are accompanied by the Egyptian prophet, the wise old man Kalassirid, who learned the secret of the birth of Chariclea. She is an Ethiopian princess, her mother, Queen Persinna, threw up her daughter, who was born to her with snow-white skin, because, expecting a child, the queen admired the image of Andromeda.

According to the oracle, Theagenes and Chariclea were supposed to visit “the black earth, the lot of the hot sun” before the wedding. They go to Africa, but are captured by pirates, which begins a long chain of their adventures. The action of «Ethiopica», which has a very complex composition, is mainly connected with Egypt. Greece is mentioned only in the stories of minor characters (Knemon and Calasirida), Ethiopia plays an important role. If in other novels the heroes first meet each other in their hometown and after numerous adventures return there, the heroes of Ethiopia spend their childhood in Greece, while the end of their wanderings and a happy reunion takes place in Ethiopia, in the homeland of the heroine.

The philosophical and religious tendencies that make up one of the remarkable features of Heliodor’s novel do not represent any purposeful doctrines or currents that make it possible to interpret his novel as a philosophical or religious treatise. Heliodorus, who has a good rhetorical education, strives to demonstrate as best as possible the characteristic philosophical tendencies of his time. The tendency inherent in Heliodorus to an abundance of religious, mythological and philosophical reasoning in his novel predetermined the success that his work enjoyed in the era of the Byzantine Empire. A Russian translation of Heliodor’s novel appeared for the first time in the 18th century. under the heading: “The image of innocent love, or the terrible adventure of the Ethiopian princess Chariclea and Theagenes the Thessalian”. This translation is from Latin. From Latin, French and German editions, the novels of other authors were repeatedly translated into Russian, such as, for example, “The Adventures of Kerea and Kalliroi” by Khariton, “The triumph of conjugal love over misfortunes, or the adventures of Avrocom and Anthia” by Xenophon of Ephesus. At 1896, the original translation of Long’s novel «Daphnis and Chloe», made by D. Merezhkovsky, appeared. Most Greek novels were translated from Greek only in the 20th century.
