Read Vittoria Accorombo online (completely and free of charge) author Ludwig Tieck

The first complete Russian translation of the novel by the German romantic writer Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853) «Vittorius Accorombo» (1840) reveals the late Tieck, still unknown in Russia, who created many stories and short stories on historical themes. In the center of the novel are the events of Italian history at the end of the 16th century. The fate of the poetess Vittoria Accorombona, her life and tragic death are shown by the author against the background of the panorama of Italian reality, the anarchy that reigned in the dwarf Italian states. The participants in the events are Pope Sixtus V, the deeply unhappy great poet Torquato Tasso, as well as modest townspeople and hired killers.

VITTORIA ACCOROMBONA {1}

FOREWORD

Many years ago, the name of this poetess, as well as her strange and amazing fate, attracted my attention. In 1792 I first read, in Dodsley’s collection of old plays, Webster’s tragedy The White Devil, or Vittoria Corombona. This play was published in 1612 in London and was often staged in those years. Perhaps its plot was inspired by some short story, which could have been written around 1600 and is now lost; the play contains only an accusation and distorts all the circumstances known to us. Quadrio mentions the unfortunate Vittoria in the second volume of his «History of Poetry» {3}, praises and justifies her; he is briefly quoted in his great work by Tiraboschi. Riccoboni in the History of the University of Padua {5} reports her death, Morosini writes about the same in the History of Venice {6}. J. Lebret {7} tells in his «History of Venice» about the murder of Vittoria; but the most complete information about it is in the journal of this historian. I saw the newest work of Herr Munch {8} when my work was already completed. This amazing and tragic incident could not but capture and arouse sympathy among Vittoria’s contemporaries. If the story of her death and the punishment of the notorious Luigi Orsini is described quite clearly in many books, then the story of the murder of Peretti, her first husband, seems vague and confusing both in terms of circumstances and motives. Apparently, all contemporaries deliberately hushed up the connection between them, for even the garrulous and inventive Leti {9} only briefly and casually mentions these events and seems to have no idea that the cardinal’s nephew was married to Virginia Accoromboni (as Quadrio calls her). Thus, the author had no choice but to fill with his own means the gaps in this strange story and illuminate its foggy places with poetic light.

However, much in this novel is not invented, but depicted in accordance with the facts. So, in 1576, on the night of July 11, Pietro Medici killed his wife Eleanor of Toledo in his country house, and on July 16 of the same year, his wife Isabella (S. Galuzzo { 10}, History of the Dukes of Tuscany, vol. II).

The picture of this time — the time of the decline of the Italian states — was supposed to expose the dark sides of the human soul and put them in the proper light. Vittoria, or Virginia, Corombona, or Accorombona, will win, as the author hopes, the hearts of pure and strong-minded people, and thereby refute the slander of the old English tragedian, {11} whose poetic virtues (in contrast to former times) are too highly appreciated by some modern critics.

Dresden. In July 1840

PART ONE

BOOK ONE

CHAPTER ONE

It was in the jubilee year of 1575 when the Accor family Bonnie stopped at a villa in lovely Tivoli, so that she could during the hot months, enjoy the fresh coolness, admire the waterfalls, the beautiful view of the falling Teverona and the enchanting hills of the rich landscape. The mother of this family — a majestic proud matron, strong enough and in old age and not without traces of her former beauty — ruled her relatively poor house with such great discretion and wisdom that dignity and prosperity reigned in it, and foreigners, willingly being in this family, met here education, musicality, poetic talent and even scholarship.

This woman, a noble Roman woman of large build, was the soul of the house, for her imperious presence commanded the respect of all acquaintances and strangers; she was proud of her nobility and her children. She came from an old noble family, and her late husband Accoromboni was once a prominent lawyer in Rome, who conducted important affairs of the great world of this and the state itself and won significant lawsuits with honor. Already his father, also a lawyer, won the love and respect of the Romans, and both of these men dealt with princes, patricians and famous scientists and writers of all Italian states. Thus the house of Accoromboni was famous, and there was not a single distinguished foreigner who would not wish to be introduced to the venerable mistress of the house.

However, this majestic woman found the greatest joy in her family and in the circle of her children. Her eldest son, thanks to his patrons, among whom Cardinal Farnese occupied the first place {14}, was already an abbot, and his mother hoped to see him soon in the vestments of a bishop, and later in the purple of a cardinal, for he enjoyed the fame of a scholar and was revered as a pleasant secular person.

Marcello, the second son, was wild and unbridled, often wandering in the mountains for many days, not giving his mother an account of where and with whom he spent his time. With a proud glance of her blue eyes, the mother forced all people to respect and, to a certain extent, to obedience, but she could not break the stubborn temper of Marcello, who considered it a humiliation to obey a woman.

She tried to use all her influence to secure a position as captain of the papal guards for this stubborn man, but he himself was most opposed to this, because he did not want to sacrifice freedom and submit to discipline.

Flaminio, the youngest son, seemed to be his complete opposite: malleable, of a fragile constitution, gentle in character, almost like a girl, a respectful servant of his mother, obeying the look and movement of her hand. In constant care of the house, he got everything necessary for the family, supervised the servants, was an adviser to young people, a favorite of young girls, about whose favor, however, he was not particularly worried, although he was generally friendly in dealing with people. He seemed to turn all his love to the youngest person in the family, his charming sister Vittoria, or Virginia, as she was sometimes called. Some stranger, watching them, could take him more for a lover in love than for the brother of a lovely creature.

Vittoria seemed to be a marvel of perfection, she resembled one of those old-time portraits that an admiring observer, once seen, could never forget. As soon as she entered her seventeenth year, she was almost the same height as her mother, her pale face was colored only by a slight blush, which, at the slightest agitation of the soul, disappeared completely or, rapidly changing, flared up so strangely that she then seemed to be a different creature, almost unlike former.
