Like everything in the Torah, even small changes make a big difference. To better understand the reasons for these name changes, let’s analyze the very idea of ​​a Hebrew name, and what the name change means in general. Now let’s turn to the events that caused the name change and their importance.

What is a word?

In English or any other language, words do not have a strong basis. The name of an item has no intrinsic connection with the item itself. For example, water is called «water» not because the word itself or its letters are somehow connected with liquid. People simply agreed to call it «water» so that they could understand each other and communicate effectively. And so with any name in any language.

But in Hebrew everything is different. It is the holy language by which G-d created the world. The 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet represent 22 different forms of the life force that Gd gives us. Through these letters, this Divine power penetrates the Universe and gives strength to all created things. The Hebrew letters that make up the name of an object are various combinations and manifestations of the Divine will necessary to maintain the existence of these objects. The word Yaakov consists of the word «eykev» , «heel,» as well as the word «shirk. » This name characterizes the ministry of a Jew in a world full of obstacles. From this point of view, the Jew, being forced to struggle with difficulties, is like a heel that touches the ground. A Jew can develop in two directions: to overcome difficulties like Jacob or like Israel to be invulnerable to them. In order to maintain contact with the Almighty, this Jew must, so to speak, «evade». It means that the problems and difficulties of the material world can never be completely overcome, they can only be avoided and the Almighty can be served even in concealment.

Now let’s move on to the name Israel. Israel comes from the word sar, leader, and from the words that G-d spoke to Jacob when he gave him a new name: “ ki sarisa” because you fought with a man and an angel and won.”8 Thus, the name Israel speaks of a Jew who serves the Almighty in such a way that it allows him to reveal the Divine presence to those around him. The Jew is a soldier elevated above the outside world, not noticing the flaws and problems of this world.

Yaakov started with the name Yaakov because that is how a Jew begins to serve G-d. He had to «go around» his father, brother, and Laban because he was still connected to this world. It was only after he defeated the Angel of Esau and finally returned to the land of Israel that he received the exalted status of Israel. However, the name of Jacob remains in use because the way of Jacob is still a necessary ingredient in every Jew’s service to Gd.

Early morning February 12, 1942. Tel Aviv, Mizrahi Bet Street, Building 8. A tall, thin man does not sleep and toils in a small apartment upstairs. He smokes cigarettes and sometimes writes something on slips of paper. Poetry. The man has tired eyes. There is a real hunt for him and his associates, where the hounds are all kinds of agents, fillers, informers, and the hunters are the British police of Mandatory Palestine.

«And the city turned to hell,

Houses are like gallows in a row,

This man, hunted down as a dangerous, wild, unpredictable beast, is Stern, the legendary fighter against the British occupation of Palestine, the founder of the Lehi militant group (Lohamei Herut Israel — «Israeli Freedom Fighters»), known in the underground as Yair.
At birth, he was given a name in honor of the forefather Abraham.
The future underground worker was born on December 23, 1907 in Suwalki (now a city in Poland near the Lithuanian border). The family was prosperous: his father was a city dentist, and his mother was a midwife in a Jewish hospital.
There was a strong Jewish community in Suwalki: there was a synagogue, a cheder, a nursing home…
The community had close ties with Yishuv in Eretz Israel: immigrants from Suwalki formed a settlement there. Many Jews in the city shared the ideas of Zionism. Among them were Abraham’s parents, Mordechai and Lisa.
Abraham (at home his name was Meme) was not the only child of the Sterns and adored his younger brother David.
The family lived in a city estate, the windows of which looked at the town hall and the park.

The idyll of life was derailed by the First World War. Mordechai was arrested by the German occupation authorities (a Jew means a Russian spy!), and Lisa and her children fled to her father in Lithuania. From there, Abraham, in the second year of the revolution, was sent to his uncle in Petrograd.
Here he studied at a Soviet school that still kept the standards of the gymnasium (Latin, Homer in the original), joined the pioneers and spent time with young people obsessed with communist ideas. In his free time from rallies and studies, he tried to earn a living and help his uncle — he sold cigarettes by the piece: “Buy, koifte, koifte, cigarettes! Come, infantry and sailors!”
Having left Suwalki as a child, Abraham returned to his homeland in 1921 as a teenager who had already seen his life. He returned at the insistence of his reunited parents. Young Stern set off on a journey without money and documents. He rode to the border on the roofs of passing trains, and made his way to the newly created Poland illegally, in the bag of some peasant.
The family lived in the same house, but Abraham did not feel connected with his relatives — the years of separation affected. I had to get used to each other again and learn half-forgotten Polish — the boy went to the local Jewish gymnasium. Languages ​​were easy for him, and soon he organizes a theater group, where he brilliantly plays the main roles in his own productions — he plays King Lear, for example. At the same time, Stern began to write poems that delighted the girls from the senior classes. Always carefully dressed, a ring glittered on his finger — he stood out among everyone, like a lone pine tree on a slope.
However, with all the detachment from his peers, Abraham was associated with them by the ideas of Zionism. New Poland made it clear in every possible way — «Jews have no place in it.» And most Jews agreed with that. The youth dreamed of the Land of Promise, and when the Jewish gymnasium was closed after the end of state support in 1925, the parents sent Abraham to finish his education in Jerusalem.
He already knew Hebrew, studied the history and traditions of his people.
Stern reached Haifa on the first day of 1926 years old Suwalki received his letter:
“I arrived full of hope and set foot on this earth with reverence! Here I am going to build a new life full of songs, sun and joy! Our land is so beautiful that it is easy to believe in a bright future!”
At the same time, Stern foresaw even then the inevitable and difficult struggle that the Jews would face for the revival of their state. His original motto was the stanza of Chaim Bialik from the poem about the Chisinau pogrom: “Let fists fly like stones into heaven and into the heavenly throne!”
Yes, the Jews had to fight not for life, but for death. So far, Abraham has studied classical and Jewish literature at the University of Jerusalem. Here he met Roni, the love of his life, who became his wife and true friend.
The pastoral mood of Abraham, immersed in the world of drama and art, was swept away by the whirlwinds of the Arab riots of 1929. At that time, Hebron suffered the most, where the Haganah, the Yishuv security detachments, were unable to protect the population from “peaceful neighbors”: there were not enough people, weapons, experience…
Stern immediately joins the «Haganah», is on duty at night in various settlements. Instead of a gun, banned by the British authorities, he has a strong stick in his hands.
But the Haganah did not quite correspond to Stern’s views. He did not rely on the support of the British, considering them occupiers, and believed that only the national rise of the Jews would help to revive Israel.
In 1932, part of the radical participants in the defense of Yishuv created the Irgun (national military organization) — the military wing of the Haganah, which was preparing to carry out military actions. The Irgun was not subordinate to the leaders of the Yishuv. Much was done in secret: caches with weapons and explosives were prepared, maps of British fortifications were obtained, secret information was collected. One of its leaders was Zeev Jabotinsky.
Stern joined the Irgun. He wrote articles for magazines and newspapers, printed leaflets, organized protests against the Arab onslaught and British connivance. Went to jail several times. The leadership offered Stern to become an agent for the supply of weapons from Europe.

Abraham spent years on the road, returning briefly to Palestine. He established connections with a wide variety of people in Italy, Romania and Poland. He managed to enlist the support of influential Polish officials, who, due to anti-Semitism, were not against facilitating the departure of Jews to Eretz Israel, and even agreed to help with the supply of weapons — if only the money would come.
Stern organized training camps in the Tatras, where the Jewish youth of Europe from the Beitar organization were trained. They were trained by veterans of the Polish army. The training included a junior commander course, the production of explosives, conspiracy, sabotage and guerrilla warfare.

Abraham gave lectures to young cadets, where he promoted his ideas: only the Jews are able to build their own state on their land, and the help of the British will turn into a disaster! «We will again be locked up in a ghetto, which will be run by the Arabs in the interests of the occupiers.»
Many young people who went through training camps left for Palestine and joined the Haganah or the Irgun. Those who remained after the occupation of Europe by the Nazi troops, joined the allied armies or created partisan detachments, became part of the conspiratorial network of resistance to fascism.
On May 17, 1939, the so-called «White Book» was published, which the Jews immediately dubbed the «Black Book». This British document stated that Jewish immigration to Palestine amounted to almost half a million people, and therefore the purpose of the Balfour Declaration had been achieved. In the future, the number of Jews entering Palestine should be reduced, and the purchase of land by Yishuv should also be prohibited. A separate state of the Jews is not foreseen. Britain decided to create a common country for Arabs and Jews with a single government!
Once again, people under the Union Jack did not fulfill their promise and deceived their adherents. (As British Prime Minister Palmerston once let it slip: «England has neither permanent allies nor permanent enemies. England has permanent interests»).
A wave of protests swept through cities with a Jewish population: how can immigration be stopped when the Jews of Germany and other countries where the Nazis brought the “new order” are trying to leave, saving not their property, but their lives!
The Jewish underground carried out several shocking attacks against the Arabs and the British.
On September 1, 1939, the first day of World War II, Stern and other Irgun leaders were arrested «just in case.» However, they could not prove their involvement in demonstrative massacres. They spent three months behind barbed wire in the Sarafand camp.
The mode was pretty free. The prisoners talked a lot, arguing about the direction of further work. Most of the leadership of the Irgun was in favor of ending the fight against Britain and supporting the allies in the war against fascism. Stern, however, had a different opinion.
Perhaps, after this arrest, Stern decided to create an organization to fight specifically with the British. In the war, he saw an opportunity to use the resource of the Axis against the troops of the Empire. This is how the Lehi battle group arose, headed by Abraham, who took the pseudonym Yair in honor of Eliezer bin Yair, who led the defenders of the Masada fortress.
His articles are becoming more radical and harsher: “It is quite clear to me: European Jewry will be destroyed if we do not come to an agreement with Germany . .. Obviously, our enemy is Britain. Britain could save millions of our brothers! But it’s also obvious that she won’t save them!”
May 10, 1941 Abraham Stern spoke on the radio. In his address, he blasted to smithereens the pre-war activities of the Jewish Agency, whose leadership he called «a clique of aging lobbyists.» His voice sounded over all Palestine: “You are the suppliers of“ Jewish cannon fodder ”for Britain! He believed that for the sake of the revival of the country, one should cooperate with anyone — just to move towards the goal. “The end justifies the means” is a common misconception among politicians and activists. Abraham hoped to attract the attention of Hitler’s emissaries in the Middle East, and with their help put an end to British power. «We will restore Israel, the Jews will have somewhere to go»! In 1940, the world did not yet know about the methods of the Nazis to finally solve racial issues.
For two years, Lehi staged several terrorist attacks against British officers and civil servants. “Blood for blood,” from time to time they repeated ringing and menacing words in their leaflets.
Britain recognized the «Stern gang» as extremely dangerous and a real hunt began for the Lehi, especially when a random raid confirmed contacts with the Germans in Beirut and the collection of secret information about the troops.
The ring around the group was shrinking. The next «ex», despite the solid jackpot, turned out to be a failure: two performers were arrested and random passers-by — Jews were killed.

At the end of 1941, a meeting of underground commanders was held on Dizengoff Street. Two «died during the resistance», two, having wounded, were taken alive. Only the elusive Stern remained in leadership.
But as a result of a cunning game with the prisoners (or information that came from former associates who were tired of the uncontrollable Yair), secret police officer Geoffrey Morton received important information: Stern lay down on the bottom in an apartment on Mizrahi Street.
Policemen in civilian clothes came to the apartment with a check — too often the information turned out to be a lie. To their surprise and joy, in addition to the landlady, Tova Svorai, they found Stern.

— Abraham, how did you end up in the Superstar show? Do you really want to prove something to someone?

— They made me an interesting offer: to participate not only in this project, but also the whole package of pleasures (laughs), NTV will be called more often. — At the peak of popularity, conflicts suddenly began to arise from different sides. I didn’t understand why there were so many of them. What am I doing wrong? After all, I am a peaceful artist, I will not offend an ant. And then I realized that it all started with the arrival of Prigozhin (Iosif Prigogine, producer and husband of the singer Valeria) into my life and work. He saw that he could make money with me, and it started. Perhaps he had good intentions — to do a bunch of concerts for me, but in the end he ended up teaming up with Telman (Ismailov — the former owner of the Cherkizovsky market, an influential businessman who was often associated with crime; now he is on the international wanted list — Auth.) . It was a conspiracy! I became a victim. They were both strong: one is a billionaire with huge connections so far, the other is a show business shark who knows all the producers who could fight me in show business territory. From two sides I received such an attack. Therefore, in 2004, when I was beaten in the hotel «Prague», it was «education», as they understood it. To make me their slave. These people think differently. I wouldn’t want my enemy to contact them.

— Did you get rid of slavery?

— In 2006 I left Prigozhin, it was doubly unpleasant for him. He called me a walking bag of money. And then he told a bunch of lies (that Russo accepted a huge amount of money in foreign currency as compensation for the beating, and therefore did not report to the police — Auth. ). It’s a lie! Prigozhin then said, «I will tear the last shirt, but they will reach the end.» There should be no crime in Russian show business, but, unfortunately, it remains. And he should be behind bars.

— In October, Telman Ismailov was detained in Montenegro, will you be summoned for investigative actions in the case?

— He was released. Because corruption exists not only in Russia. Of course, Montenegro knew that Russia had filed documents for his arrest. He is on the international wanted list. But he was given political asylum there. Like this? First arrested, then released. Some game. A small country has shown disrespect for Russian law. If you manage to catch Ismailov, then a face-to-face confrontation will take place in Moscow.

— First, I am under the protection of the Lord. Secondly, the Russian Federation took me under state protection. All my movements are controlled by law enforcement agencies. This will continue indefinitely — as long as necessary. I have security.

— What is the US doing?

— I live in New Jersey with my wife and two children. I record a lot of songs. I have a music studio with professional Russian-speaking specialists. I often perform in America for Russians. So I’m busy with my career. During the pandemic, I hosted the Heart-to-heart show on Youtube and Facebook and held live concerts. As many songs and videos as I have released over the past year and a half, few have released.

— If everything goes well, are you ready to return to Russia? Or link the future with America.
