How to build a fence from a profiled sheet with a slope with your own hands?

Unpretentious and practical fences made of corrugated board are found in all corners of our country. They are simple, reliable and always look neat. Especially when they form an ideal rectangle around the perimeter of the site: it is easy to plan, calculate and install.

But when you have to put a corrugated fence on an uneven area with a slope, straight lines and tight joints are not easy to achieve — it is important to know about some points. Let’s take a closer look at this issue!

What are the problems with uneven ground?

To begin with, the number one problem on slopes is the risk of earth slumping. Therefore, if the slope is very small, then it makes sense to completely level the entire area by adding soil in the right places and tamping it well. But if you have to build a fence from corrugated board on a fairly steep slope, then this whole undertaking risks collapsing with the first heavy rain.

It is also always worth remembering that in the spring natural processes occur in the soil: heaving, freezing and compaction. Therefore, in order to “calm” him a little, more trees and large shrubs with widely branched roots are planted along such a fence in advance. They serve as excellent natural reinforcement.

Also, the embankment itself can damage the fertile part of the earth, it is labor-intensive, and yet the natural slope looks more organic. And not everyone strives to level the landscape around the house at 0: after all, uniqueness is in fashion today, and small hills and slopes enable designers to implement unusual projects.

But the solidly installed fence made of profiled sheet on uneven terrain with deeply fixed supports also serves as a certain protection of the site from possible destruction over time.

Which profiled sheet is suitable for the fence?

A thin profiled sheet of standard sizes is great for building a fence. Sheet steel with a sufficiently strong protective coating in practice proves to be no worse than wood or concrete in many respects, and even wins in some of them. And the profiling itself significantly increases the rigidity and reliability of the sheets — simple laws of physics work here:

So, the following sheets are suitable for the fence device:

  • marked “C”, which means “wall” — for vertical installation, but without additional load;
  • with a combination of the letters “HC”, which means increased strength than in the case of the previous version;
  • marked “H”, but this corrugated board is already more expensive and stronger than the one that is necessary for the construction of even a high fence.

Therefore, the following brands are recommended:

  • C8-C25 or HC-10 for quiet regions;
  • stronger corrugated board, with a wave height of 15 mm, if the fence needs to be installed on a site with a slope at a height and strong winds.

As for the decorative coating, powder or polymer paint is preferable here. Unlike roofing, here the sheets will be easily scratched by tree branches or animal claws, and therefore it is important that a single scratch does not quickly begin to corrode. And the thickness of the zinc coating and the finish layer is already responsible for this.

And the design of such a fence is of considerable importance. Indeed, today metal profiles are produced far from only in artificial 3-4 “acid” tones. On the contrary, spectacular imitations of stone, wood or other textures, beautiful mother-of-pearl shades and deep matte tones appeared. Therefore, with the right approach, even a “stepped” fence made of corrugated board on a slope can look stylish.

Building a fence: step by step

Now let’s look at the basic steps for installing a corrugated fence for sloping terrain.

Step 1. Choosing the type of fence and base

So, the fence itself is built from corrugated board on a sloped terrain:

  • solid, in which the sheets of corrugated board completely cover the supports;
  • sectional, where each span is divided by pillars, and the length of the sections varies depending on the available terrain.

In the case of a corrugated fence on a slope, the second option is more preferable.

Step 2: Site Preparation

If necessary, the site is cleared of excess shrubs and other vegetation, because the roots of those can destroy the foundation over time. Also pay attention to obstacles that you cannot bypass, such as electrical pylons.

After that, wooden pegs must be driven in along its perimeter. A rope is pulled between them, the distance is measured and so they find out the required number of spans.

In the case of a sectional fence, the width between the posts must be chosen as a multiple of the sheet width, and if the fence is solid, then 2.5-3 meters will be optimal.

If the fence is on a strip foundation, then at this stage you need to set the levels. To do this, beat marks on the racks in the corners of the resulting rectangle, if the slope is with a very slight slope, and at the beginning and end for each section — if with a significant one.

It is also desirable to strengthen the slope itself with gabions through which only water will pass.

Step 3. Building the foundation

The supports are buried directly in the ground or are already interconnected using a strip foundation. Of course, in the case of a corrugated fence on a slope, a foundation is not necessary if the supports are deep enough in the ground. But due to the unevenness of the soil under such a fence in some places there will be a gaping gap. This option is only suitable for a budget suburban area.

But the manufacture of the foundation involves the cost of materials and labor, because such a foundation is built according to the same principles and technologies as for the whole house. But the costs will pay off with a solid appearance of such a fence, its durability and protection of the site from dust from the street. Indeed, a reliable foundation is necessary not only for heavy structures, because a plinth that protrudes above the ground significantly increases the service life of any fence.

If you stopped on a strip foundation, you need to dig a pit of the desired shape and strengthen the walls with wooden formwork. Then a concrete mortar of the same composition is kneaded as for a conventional foundation for heavier structures.

In the case of metal supports, with the help of a drill, recesses of 1-1. 5 meters and a diameter of up to 400 mm are prepared. And remember, the higher the fence, the deeper the posts should be. So, the ideal ratio is 35% underground and 65% above.

At the bottom of the pits, a sand cushion 10-12 cm thick is made, and the side walls are protected with roofing material or polyethylene so that the soil does not penetrate into the concrete. Reinforcement is welded to metal supports and placed on pillows along a plumb line in one line. Pour concrete with crushed stone or small stones per 1 meter. The rest of the height must be compacted with ordinary sand, which will compensate for the natural heaving of the soil.

Further, as with a traditional foundation, air should be removed from the solution using a piece of reinforcement.

A fence made of corrugated board on a stone foundation also looks good:

Step 4 Installing the corrugated sheets

For fixing corrugated board, the following types of racks are usually used:

  • brickwork;
  • screw piles;
  • wooden or reinforced concrete poles;
  • metal pipes.

In a sectional fence, the poles are often built with stone or brick, adding to the cost. But such a fence looks more solid. In addition, combined fences made of materials of different composition are popular today, and those that consist of stone and metal are considered especially stylish. They are often built with the same finish that was used on the front of the house.

Now, in order to install a fence from a profiled sheet on a site with a slope yourself, you will need thick work gloves so as not to cut yourself on sharp edges, and a special paint for galvanized steel. After all, most likely you will need to cut the sheets in height, and such places must be painted over immediately — otherwise corrosion cannot be avoided.

Before mounting the sheets, the supports are painted in the desired color. Next, we weld or nail metal fasteners to them — depending on what material of the pillars you have chosen. As an option, clamps and special brackets of various types are also suitable.
