candidate of philological sciences about feminitives in the Russian language (INTERVIEW) – News of Vladivostok on VL.
ru
Recently, feminitives denoting a profession or occupation can be increasingly seen in the media and social networks: feminists believe that the use of words like “author” or “deputy” can overcome gender inequality and draw attention to women’s rights. However, for a part of the audience, new feminists cause ridicule and become an occasion for jokes. Natalya Milyanchuk, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Far East Federal University and a member of the Philological Council of the Total Dictation project in the Far East, answers questions about how appropriate and correct from the point of view of the Russian language the use of feminitives.
— Natalya Sergeevna, how would you react if I presented you in the text not as a philologist, but, for example, as a philologist?
— I would take it as a smart joke (Laughs) . It is clear that this is not the norm. I prefer to be a philologist. As Tsvetaeva, I remember, she said that she was not a poetess, but a poet.
— Do such words — author, blogger, philologist, deputy — violate the rules of the Russian language?
— No, these words have the right to exist in the language. There are different word-building models with the help of which the forms of feminitives are formed. For example, the suffix “k” (student-student), the suffix “sh” (announcer-announcer), and even “them” (doctor-doctor) — yes, there is such a thing in Russian. But the question is to what extent the resulting words correspond in their semantics to the task.
In the Russian language of the 19th-20th centuries, a “general’s wife” is a general’s wife. The «editor’s wife», probably, can also be perceived as the wife of the editor. The suffix «sh» has a traditional derivational meaning — spouse. In addition, the suffix «sh» gives the word a stylistically reduced coloration, as does the suffix «their». I think the one who came up with the «editor» just wanted to avoid such an association. Indeed, of all such suffixes, “k” is the most neutral. But when we attach it to a word, although it is closer to the norm, it still does not turn out to be stylistically neutral.
In general, from the point of view of linguistic science, such formations cannot be assessed as correct or incorrect. All the resources that objectively exist in the Russian language are all working, functional. Another thing is what happened as a result — words, some of which are recognized as the norm, some are not. Both «wolf» and «wolf» are built according to the rules of Russian word formation, but only «wolf» is a normative lexeme.
– That is, such words have some negative connotation?
– Yes, of course. «Philologist» is a colloquial word. “Author”, “editor” are also not neutral, they are stylistically reduced. A person who uses such a word may not put irony into it, but the vast majority of native speakers perceive this word with an ironic connotation.
– Why does it happen that “philologist” or “author” is perceived by people normally, but as soon as you add a “gender” suffix, a smile appears? Is this not an expression of chauvinism?
– I don’t consider myself a feminist, but I understand their pain. And to be precise, I’ll start from afar. Gender chauvinism is inherent in the languages of the whole world due to human psychology, with rare exceptions. This is the picture of the world of our ancestors: by default, many types of activity, professional, mental, are presented in the languages of the world as inherent in men, but not women. For example, in French or English, «man» and «person» are the same word, but for a woman — a different designation. At least we have different nouns for this. There is an example in Russian with collective numerals — they can be used with masculine words (“three friends”), but not with feminine words, animal names, and also with the names of inanimate objects: “three tables, three wolves, three women «. It turns out that men are in a privileged category — they can get together, but women cannot. There are also opposite examples, also “humiliating” for women, for example, the profession of a nanny is indicated only in the feminine gender, and the masculine version does not evoke a sense of the norm. In Polish, this inequality of men and women is expressed even grammatically: plural forms, when attached to nouns denoting men, have one ending, and when attached to nouns denoting women, animals and inanimate objects, they have another. We can say grammatical discrimination: these forms are called so — personal-male and female-thing. How do you like this opposition? The fact is that everything in the language is fixed by tradition, our language has been formed since antiquity and reflects the consciousness of people. This, so to speak, is standard, this is how human consciousness has been arranged since primitive times.
Someone will answer me — so what, we should behave and think like primitive people? And indeed, consciousness is still changing, other values are being formed, this is reflected in the language. But the process is lengthy. The language, of course, is developing, but it is conservative, it cannot and should not react with lightning speed to all changes: then grandmother and granddaughter, people from different generations will not be able to talk to each other. We can speak the same language with our parents and children due to the fact that the norm is conservative and keeps the tradition.
– But other feminitives “live” comfortably in the Russian language: the words “journalist” or “teacher” are widely used and are unlikely to make anyone laugh. Why is this happening?
– Everything is not so simple here: everyone is used to the word “teacher”. But note that it will not be written in the document. Only «teacher of the 1st category».
As for the perception of feminists, I will give myself as an example. Although I belong to the older generation, I am still quite active, I am a philologist, I like to observe living processes in language and speech, however, I regularly find myself lagging behind life and sometimes I don’t understand some words. In general, I am not the most advanced user of the language, but not the most backward either, so we can assume that my perception, my linguistic intuition may reflect some average perception. And I judge like this: if, when I meet a word, I have a smile that the author did not want to cause me, there is a feeling of inconsistency in the situation, some similar reactions, it means that the word has not yet been fixed in the norm with full rights.
For example, I can use the word «substitute» in a lecture or in popular science notes — in the meaning of «let down, put a person in an unpleasant position.» This word is also stylistically reduced, in the 90s it annoyed and infuriated someone. And now everyone uses it, although it is unlikely, of course, that I use it in a scientific article. Once I was interviewed about «Total Dictation», and I said: «Being literate is cool.» In response — a bunch of comments: how could a philologist use such a slang word! But I did it quite consciously, believing that it was appropriate. Against the word «cool» in this context, my intuition does not mind. Inwardly, I feel that this is the word that fits here, or I catch myself that I cannot do without it, because there is no equivalent in the literary language.
And I don’t feel the need for the word «author». And when I hear such words, I have an internal signal that this is not quite suitable for the situation, or, for example, it is suitable if a person wanted to joke, irony is expressed in this. But this effect is special, artistic and stylistic, based precisely on a deviation from the norm.
While the audience has a reaction to such words that is undesirable for the speaker, these words have not taken their rightful place in the language. Although it is quite possible that someday it will happen. But here it turns out that the very struggle for feminists is not so much a struggle for words as for civil rights, this is one of the forms of drawing attention to the problem of women’s rights.
— I remember the Soviet Union, when feminitives were practically not used in the designation of professions and occupations. Both the man and the woman were all comrades. And at the same time, women received such rights that they never had before in the history of mankind. So, it turns out, we need feminists in the equalization of rights?
– You understand that laws, not words, equalize people’s rights. Words only reflect the current state and are unlikely to equalize the rights of everyone. The problem arises because, in fact, women have long occupied many professional positions that previously could only be held by men, and the words for these positions still exist only for men. By the way, we need laws that would equalize other rights, but is it possible to legislate so that a man and a woman receive the same salary and climb the career ladder with equal success?
It’s a bit of a misconception that feminitives were abandoned in Soviet times. It’s just that the Soviet ideological language is close to business, and in business style, masculine words are almost always used to designate subjects of activity. This has its own logic and convenience. For me, this is even equality — it depends on how to turn around. From the point of view of modern feminists, the use of words meaning a male person to a woman is a kind of infringement of rights. And it seems to me that this situation itself means that a woman receives the same rights as a man. Whoever hurts — he pays attention to that. I see equality in this: a woman can be a deputy, a general, a candidate. Why form a new word for this, if it is only a designation of status? This is how it happened historically.
– What needs to be done to change the situation, and the author, the deputy – become the norm?
– We, philologists, consider only what is written in the dictionary to be the norm. There are no abstract, unwritten laws in the use of language. They are codified, and the authors of the dictionaries codify them. These are specific people who have been given authority and authority by the scientific community. And only when the word, firstly, gets into the dictionary of the literary language, and secondly, does not have any restrictive markings, only then we will consider it the norm. And this takes time for the vast majority of native speakers to perceive such words as the norm, and not as a deviation.
– Is there a chance for new feminists to become such a language norm?
– I think time will pass and some of these feminist couples will take root, if it is necessary for communication in our society. 100 years ago, K. I. Chukovsky was annoyed by the word “study”. He called it vulgar, considered it unnecessary — they say, there is the word «teaching». Years have passed, and what, someone perceives «study» as vulgar? The word has become a full-fledged element of our vocabulary. In recent years, there have been more feminitives in the language — not in the literary, but in the broad speech element. And this happens just in connection with a change in consciousness, people create these words, plant them, they themselves try to influence fate by their use.
We philologists don’t like to make predictions: you can’t predict anything in a language, it often develops rather unexpectedly for forecasters, completely illogically. He is affected not so much by consciousness as by the collective unconscious. The Russian language itself will decide the fate of feminists — and perhaps this decision will surprise us.

There are different power lines — incl. self-healing
Power transmission line (TL) is:
- one of the components of the electrical network,
- power equipment system designed to transmit electricity by means of electric current,
- an electrical line as part of such a system, extending beyond the power plant or substation (SS).
Distinguish between overhead and cable power lines.
Recently, gas-insulated lines — GIL — have become popular.
Information is also transmitted via power lines using high-frequency signals and FOCL.
They are used for supervisory control, transmission of telemetry data, relay protection signals and emergency automation.
The construction of a power transmission line includes design, production work, installation, commissioning, and maintenance.
Overhead power line (VL) — a device designed to transmit or distribute electrical energy through wires located in the open air and attached with the help of traverses (brackets), insulators and fittings to supports or other structures (bridges, overpasses).
It consists of:
- wires,
- traverses,
- fittings,
- insulators,
- supports,
- lightning protection cables,
- arresters,
- grounding,
- sectionalizers built into lightning wire, power cable,
- auxiliary equipment for the needs of operation (high-frequency communication equipment, capacitive power take-off, etc. ),
- marking elements for high-voltage wires and power transmission line supports to ensure the safety of aircraft flights.
Poles are marked with a combination of paints of certain colors, wires — with aviation balls for marking in the daytime.
To indicate in the daytime and at night, the lights of the light fence are used.
Self-healing transmission lines
Of course, we are not talking about regeneration.
The self-healing technology involves the initial use of rolling rollers in the clamp design, which provide non-rigid fastening of the wires, and a special traverse — the supporting structure of the support.
Usually, on intermediate supports of existing structures of 6-20 kV overhead lines, the wire is rigidly attached to the insulator with a spiral knit.
The use of rolling rollers prevents the destruction of insulators, wires and supports when a tree falls or freezing rain on a 6-20 kV overhead line, since there is no destruction of the clamp, insulator, wire or supports:
- there is no rigid fixation of the wires in the clamp;
- the wire in the fall zone under load slides along the rollers of the supporting clamps, falls lower, withstanding the weight, in the remaining spans it is pulled;
- the load is evenly redistributed along the entire length of the overhead transmission line;
- line breaks or supports breaks do not occur.
This technology reduces the time for limiting the power supply to consumers, since it is only necessary to remove a fallen tree, and there is no need to repair power lines.
Requirements for the installation of SVL:
- to be carried out on straight sections of the line route, the angle of rotation of the route is not more than 5 °;
- total slope of the route — no more than 2°;
- the minimum length of the section between supports is 500 meters.
Economy of SVL:
- the cost of building SVL is almost 15% higher;
- but the cost of repair and restoration work is 12 times lower than when a tree falls on a conventional overhead line:
- just need to remove the fallen tree from the wire,
- no need to rebuild supports, wire, insulators and clamps,
- power supply is not interrupted, there are no fines for undersupply of electricity.
