How to Set up Heart Names: Crayon Resist Activity

Grab a sheet a white paper, sharpies in red, pink and purple and a white crayon. On the white paper draw several hearts in different colours using the sharpies. Then take your white crayon and write the letters of your child’s name in hearts. Write one letter per heart. Create designs and patterns in the remaining hearts.

Make sure to press fairly hard with writing with the white crayon so that it can be revealed by the coloured water by your little one.

Crayon Resist Activity

To reveal the letters and patterns in the heart you need water colour paints or coloured water. The best way to reveal the white crayon is to lightly coloured water. Too much colour and it will cover the crayon.

Invite your little one to use the brush to colour the hearts and to reveal their name. As the uncover a letter, identify it for them or have them identify it (depending on their age) along with the sound it makes. Also highlight where the letter sound comes in their name (if they uncovered a letter that wasn’t the start of their name).

Have them continue until all the hearts are coloured in. Spell out their name for them identifying each letter and sound!

– How do people react to your name?

— They always react with a smile and surprise. Because of this, I must admit that I did not like my name as a child. I didn’t like it when everyone considered it their duty to ask again if that was really my name, if I was joking.

Now I look at it differently… There was even an interesting case. As a student, I spoke at a scientific conference at Kazan Federal University. Before I started my speech, as usual, I introduced myself. The work of our section on the history of journalism was supervised by Dmitry Tumanov , Associate Professor of the Institute of Social Philosophical Sciences and Mass Communications of KFU. And, as it turned out, the scope of his scientific interests is just connected with the work of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. He was pleasantly surprised that he met the «live» Arina Rodionovna. He took a picture with me and even gave me his monograph dedicated to the research of Alexander Sergeevich’s work. I was very pleased.

Now I understand that the combination of my first name and patronymic plays into my hands. Now I work with students. I think they have no problem remembering my name.

— Do you feel responsible for the good fortune of being named after the great poet’s nanny?

– I cannot say that I feel any special responsibility because of the name. I am just a namesake and do not seek to repeat the life of Arina Rodionovna, becoming a great nanny.
