Winter brings a peaceful sort of magic along with it. Have you ever heard the mysterious quiet of snow falling or looked out on snow-capped peaks and just soaked in the beauty of an all-white world? If your baby is born during winter, a name that celebrates this time of the year might just be perfect.

The winter season lets us look out onto the simplicity of nature, but it also brings immeasurable power. Snow, hail, and ice remind us of the great force of nature, and we associate winter with leafless tree branches and the disappearance of most animals (with many going into hibernation).

The cold and dark time of the year also drives us inside for shelter and warmth, and with that comes hot cocoa, cozy blankets, warm fires, and lots and lots of cuddles. Winter wields its power and we surrender to it, spending time together and celebrating the holidays.

Having a baby during the cold season shapes the way the first months will go. There will be days indoors looking out at the white world from a rocker by the window. A snow-covered yard will await your little one’s curious hands (and mouth!) Why not celebrate the magic of winter by choosing a name that indicates one of the elements for your winter baby?

We rounded up our favorite names that mean snow, ice, or winter for you.

Morphology of the Russian language 1: nouns, adjectives, pronouns

Nouns in Russian can be in singular or plural , that is, they have forms expressing the number «1» and the number «greater than 1». The value «1» is also understood as a designation of an undifferentiated, single object / phenomenon / person ( table , sea , girl ), the value «greater than 1» is also understood as a differentiated set of identical objects / phenomena / persons ( tables , seas , girls ).

Some nouns in Russian (just like in Czech), due to their semantics, can only be used in the singular form ( singularia tantum ) or only in the plural form ( pluralia tantum ).

Nouns singularia tantum usually denote:

  • Collective nouns denoting a collective as a whole, natural phenomena, groups of objects:
  • A large group consists of nouns that denote part of the whole of real and collective nouns, part of the whole is expressed using the suffixes -in- , -inc- or analytically (for more see Vobořil 2015, 19-20): Soloma Solominka , Pearl Pearl , Gorges Goroshina , Snow Snezhinka , SDA 55555555555555555555, 55555505523 litter — speck , dust speck , potato potato .

Nouns pluralia tantum usually denote:

  • Paired items or items that consist of two or more parts: trousers ( pants ), jeans , headphones , swimming trunks , pantyhose , shorts 5523 pomace , scraps , sawdust , remains , remains , offal , slop .
  • Actions, states, processes, games: negotiations , Elections , Seeing , Childbirth , Zhmurki ( Play Zhmurki ), Personal Summarks ( Play Herk ), ). ( play chess ), checkers ( play checkers Carpathians , Tatra , Alps , Athens , Dardanella , Lada , Luzhniki , Balkans , Mineral water .

Comments on the topic

  1. Real nouns singularia tantum in Russian are often used with a word specifying the quantity of a given object/thing, such words can be, for example. berry

  2. one head (two heads, five heads) of cabbage
  3. one glass (two glasses, five glasses) of juice
  4. one mug (two mugs, five mugs) of beer
  5. one cup (two cups, five cups) of tea/coffee
  6. one plate (two plates, five plates) of soup (soup)
  7. one pack (two packs, five packs) of paper / tobacco (tobacco)
  8. one bar (two bars, five bars) of chocolate
  9. one clove (two cloves, five cloves) garlic
  10. one bunch (two bunches, five bunches) of grapes
  11. one bunch (two bunches, five bunches) dill / parsley
  12. one pod (two pods, five pods) peas / beans
  13. one grain (two grains, five grains) wheat / rye / oats
  14. one piece (two pieces, three pieces) sugar / bread
  15. Nouns pluralia tantum , denoting paired objects , are used in Russian with collective numerals or a descriptive expression with the word pair ( pár ), and in combination with the collective numeral the Russian noun is in the form of the genitive case (unlike from Czech, where the noun is in the nominative form):

    • two jeans = two pairs of jeans (dvoje džíny)
    • three watches = three pairs of watches (troje hodinky)
    • four scissors = four pairs of scissors (čtvery nůžky)

Combinations with a descriptive expression in Russian are more frequent than combinations with a collective numeral. With nouns pluralia tantum, denoting paired objects with clearly separable right and left parts ( skis , skates , rollers ), it is recommended to use only descriptive expression, i.e. one pair ( two pairs , Five pairs ) / skates /9523 . Instead of the combination one pair of jeans / trousers in colloquial Russian, the combination alone + the nominative case of the noun is used: one pair of jeans / trousers .

  16. In the Old Russian language, in addition to the singular and plural forms, there were forms of the dual number . The remains of the dual number in modern Russian can be observed in nouns denoting pairs of objects / things:

    • stressed ending / , for example. coast coast , sides sides , eyes eyes , sleeves sleeves ;

    • ending -and , e. g. knee knees , shoulder shoulders , ear ears .

The remains of the dual number can also include forms of the genitive case of the singular in combination with the numeral 2: two houses , two tables , the mobile stress can be explained in the same way in the same forms: two steps , two hours vs. from the first step , less than an hour .

Chinese names. Writing, reading, meaning. Choosing a Chinese name

Choosing a name in China is limited only by the imagination of the parents, Chinese names are mostly chosen by meaning.

It is interesting that earlier in the Chinese villages a child could be called a dissonant name in order to deceive evil spirits. It was assumed that evil spirits would think that such a child was not valued in the family, and therefore would not covet him. Examples of such dissonant names are Tedan 铁蛋 «iron egg», Gousheng 狗剩 «dog food leftovers», Goudan 狗蛋 «dog egg», etc.

First of all, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that in China the surname is written and called first, and then the given name. In the vast majority of cases, the surname is one-syllable, and the given name is two-syllable (for example, 杜冬冬 Du Dongdong, Du is a surname, Dongdong is a given name). If the name (or surname) is two-syllable, then it is written together. Initials are not indicated, i.e. you can’t write Du D., you have to write Du Dongdong.

Russian names are sometimes very difficult to pronounce for the Chinese. For this reason, many who deal with the Chinese language choose a Chinese name for themselves with a beautiful meaning or transcribe their Russian name by sound. You can see the transcription of Russian names in our article Russian names in Chinese.

Below are some popular Chinese names and their meanings. Chinese names do not have any formal orthographic or grammatical features separating them into masculine and feminine. But at the same time, there is a division of names by gender, and it is based on meaning.

Every mother-to-be has to make one of the most difficult decisions — choosing a name for her baby. Since ancient times, not only parents, but also grandparents have been choosing a name in a Kazakh family — everyone tried to choose a name that would make the life of the unborn baby calm and happy. As for the girls, they were chosen names that symbolize tenderness and beauty. The boys were chosen sonorous names, meaning wisdom, happiness and wealth. We bring to your attention a selection of male Kazakh names that will give their owners a successful and happy life.

Nursultan

«Nursultan» is a compound name. From Arabic it is translated as: «nur» — «radiance, light» and «sultan» — «ruler, domineering.» Sultans were previously called the heads of the reigning dynasties. And as a name, it appeared at the beginning of the XIV century. Since this period, the name «Sultan» has been used both as a separate name and in the creation of compound names. Nursultan has a rich inner world, a balanced character and a good sense of humor. He loves traveling, meeting new people, cultures, customs. He is offended by a rude and unfair attitude both to himself and to others. Hardworking, goal oriented. Hard to admit his mistakes.

Nursultan in childhood

Active and inquisitive boy, the soul of the company, a champion in inventing games and undertakings that are not always safe. It’s easier for him to figure out how to make a harmless bomb from improvised materials than to sit through a chemistry lesson. He is more interested in the natural sciences. And even more — play football with friends and climb onto the roof of a house, preferably abandoned and haunted to boot.

Nursultan in life

Nursultan’s character combines such traits of a leader as innate oratory, the ability to work in a team, get things done, and be creative in solving problems. Such qualities, of course, will help Nursultan make a dizzying career, but only if the work will captivate him. In an unloved position, Nursultan will direct his leadership abilities in a slightly different direction: from organizing “staple-ball” competitions between employees during lunch to creating a large-scale corporate event for the entire company.

Diaz

According to one version, the name «Diaz» became popular after the uprising of the Spanish people, led by Diaz José. The name itself is translated as «sun», «divine», «sunny day». Other sources claim that the name is derived from the Arabic word «diya» and means «bright».

Diaz as a child

Little Diaz is as ambitious as in adulthood. He wants to run faster than anyone, jump further, climb higher, hold out longer … Every day is like the last for him: either he will become a champion today, and they will pump him in his arms, or he will come home as the last loser and hide under the bed. Interestingly, in studies, the incentive to “be the best” does not work. He has no time to gnaw at the granite of science: today is a yard football match, tomorrow is a running competition, and the day after tomorrow “bye, mom, we will pile on the boys from the next class and come.”

Diaz in life

Diaz is a born leader. His personality is dominated by the need to be the first in everything, to subdue, to lead. He easily conflicts with those people who are physically stronger than him or have more power. Sometimes, however, he does it without a strong need. The main thing for him is the result, and all other obstacles are just little things in life.

Diaz loves to take part in large-scale projects: a builder of skyscrapers, a leading player on the Olympic team, a project manager to save endangered animals, a great singer, at worst, «just a king.» He will not turn out to be a simple office worker coping with the daily routine. But, even having reached a certain level, Diaz periodically falls into a crisis «I’m already n years old, but I’m not yet . ..». But the boss from him is wonderful — he stands up for his team with a mountain, supports his colleagues and will always give a talented person a chance to reveal himself.

Mansur

This name is translated from Arabic as “winner”, “one who wins”. A clean and tidy man with an easy character. Having started any business, moving thoughtfully, slowly, delving into all the details, and will definitely bring it to the end. Fantasy is well developed, constantly shares new ideas with others. A materialist, I fully agree with the saying «it is better to see once than hear seven times.» When faced with resistance, he becomes irritable. Touchy, but does not hold a grudge for a long time. He does not like loneliness, seeks to spend time in the company.

Mansur as a child

Little Mansur is brought up and has excellent manners. Phlegmatic by nature, very slow and heavy on the rise. Shy and patient. Stubborn, it’s hard to convince him. If little Mansur wants to dress on his own, he will bring his mother to white heat: he will choose clothes for a long time and meticulously, then he will slowly pull his pants on, find out that he has put on the wrong thing, silently take it off, put it on again, choose a T-shirt . .. And all these actions take place against the backdrop of mother, who managed to dress herself during this time, evaporate, take off too much, change a few blouses and styling. As a reward for his mother’s patience, Mansur grows up as a complaisant and balanced boy.

Mansur in life

Mansur is endowed with such qualities of a born leader as: the ability to recognize a person’s talents, purposefulness, analytical mindset. However, Mansur could have achieved better results if he had not been so stubborn and listened to others, as he is a fan of stepping on a rake. He believes that compromise is the lot of the weak, and stands his ground to the last, which slows down the work process in the team and inflames the situation. He is attracted by the sphere of science, art, religion, as well as military affairs. If he wants to do business, then he should moderate his proud disposition and learn to ask for help and listen to advice.

Imangali

«Imangali» is translated from Arabic as: «iman» — «faith in one Allah», «gali» — «highest, dearest, high, especially valuable». The owner of this name is a versatile person. Patriotic. His interests lie in the field of sociology, political science, literature, and culture. Well-read, has the ability to learn languages. He likes to plan his activities, to designate deadlines, but he does not always adhere to his own schedule.

Imangali in childhood

Imangali is a lively boy, not devoid of the spirit of mischief. Likes to compete with friends. Despite his cocky personality, he is friendly. Always ready to help a friend and stand up for his younger brother. He is not particularly interested in studying, if he makes an effort, then only so as not to worry his parents. Has a penchant for the natural sciences.

Imangali in life

Manager. He constantly controls his subordinates, wants to achieve an ideal result. Despite what specialty he studied earlier, he would prefer to build a career in the field of social activities, politics, and the media. Endowed with excellent organizational skills. Eloquent, communicative. Explains the case, firmly, without unnecessary information. He has his own opinion on each question, it is very difficult to argue with him. Does not tolerate violation of subordination, disrespectful attitude towards oneself.

Nariman

From Persian «Nariman» is translated as «courageous», «strong in spirit», «fearless». Nariman’s nature is changeable, he constantly worries and is able to fall into depression. At the same time, he is purposeful, and, with due diligence, achieves any goals set. He is very demanding both to himself and to other people. Does not tolerate criticism. Carried away by business, he forgets about everything, even about his needs. Which soon goes sideways to him, because, in the desire to achieve something, he forgets about the arguments of reason and can make mistakes. Patient, able to spend resources on solving a problem, not expecting an instant return.

Nariman as a child

Nariman is a “darling” boy. Everyone likes it: parents, school teacher, classmates and elderly grandmothers. Saleswomen shove him sweets along with the change, teachers forgive inattention to study. Friends also like his good-natured disposition and inexhaustible optimism, with which he charges those around him.

Nariman in life

Nariman knows how to maintain a friendly atmosphere in the team. Although he is very smart, he will still not be able to achieve such results alone as when working together. Nariman has many talents and he wants to do everything at once. But, nevertheless, it is better to focus on one thing, so as not to waste your potential in vain. Nariman needs the support of his colleagues, because he himself does not know how to correctly calculate his power and mental strength and often gets hung up on shortcomings in his work.
