Introduction

The custom of replacing one’s own name with another arose long ago, even before the invention of printing. Nicknames that appeared more than a thousand years ago were originally equivalent to the modern word «surname», and later became the basis for the formation of many Russian surnames. The names of rulers and politicians have forever remained in the history of our state: Yaroslav the Wise, Alexander Nevsky, Yuri Dolgoruky, Peter the Great, Ivan the Terrible and others. Knowing what contribution they made to the history of the country, it is easy to guess why they received such nicknames.

Every indigenous person in the village has a nickname. Someone knows the history of the origin of his nickname, someone hides, and someone lives and does not try to find out. It is very interesting to know why sometimes, in a conversation, someone is called not by their first and last names, but somehow differently. The nickname has its own history of origin, origin, which, when clarified, everyone is surprised. One has only to name a nickname, say it in a street way, and it becomes clear who they are talking about. There are many nicknames in the villages. They have not completely disappeared, they continue to exist, carrying a special meaning, reflecting the real properties and qualities of a person, certain historical events.

What is a nickname?

Nickname is a name given to a person according to some of his characteristic traits, properties. In contrast to the name, the nickname reflects not desirable, but the real properties and qualities of the carrier, the origin and their carriers, and fixes the special meaning that these properties and qualities had for others. Nicknames could be given to people at different periods of their lives, and in many cases they were known to a rather limited circle of people.

There is one inviolable rule — a person cannot give a nickname to himself. Nicknames are different from pseudonyms, which a person can choose for himself, guided by his own considerations and intentions. In general, the nickname is given as a sign of affection, but it can also be used to tease or offend a person.

We decided to collect information about what nicknames are common in the settlements of the Unechsky district and how they appeared.

The collected information helps to conclude that many nicknames were formed from the names of ancestors, some of them became surnames, and some remained nicknames. The people around are very attentive and witty. They often gave nicknames based on the appearance, habits, type of employment or hobbies of a person. Some nicknames are so original that you can no longer confuse its owner with anyone else. The same nicknames were revealed in the settlements of the Unechsky district (Doctor, Medichka, Devil, Soroka, etc.)

CourseBirth, love and death of Russian princesLecturesMaterials

For centuries, the murder of Saints Boris and Gleb was attributed to Prince Svyatopolk the Accursed. At the request of Arzamas, historian Savva Mikheev tells how the study of Swedish legends and Icelandic sagas made it possible to unravel the detective story of the 11th century and suggest that it was not Svyatopolk, but Yaroslav the Wise, who was responsible for the death of Boris

In the annals, Prince Svyatopolk, who ruled Kyiv, plays an openly negative role: he waged a long bloody feud with Yaroslav the Wise and earned the nickname Cursed — probably because, as It is believed that he sent assassins to his brothers Boris, Gleb and Svyatoslav. However, in all likelihood, this image was created by a biased chronicler,
But in reality, the situation was not so clear cut.

Svyatopolk inherited the title of ruler of Kyiv from his father — or, more precisely, stepfather — Vladimir Svyatoslavich, the baptist of Russia, who died on July 15, 1015. Vladimir was very womanly, and before baptism he had many children from different wives and concubines. Svyatopolk was the only Russian prince who had a stepfather Rurikovich, since after the death of Yaropolk Svyatoslavich in 978, his winner and half-brother Vladimir married his brother’s widow, probably already pregnant with Svyatopolk. Thus, according to the chronicler, Svyatopolk «was from two fathers.» The new Kyiv prince was married to the daughter of the Polish king Boleslav the Brave and had well-established ties with the Pechenegs.

An approximate age of Svyatopolk was Yaroslav Vladimirovich (later called the Wise), who reigned at that moment in Novgorod. According to the Russian chronicle, written a couple of decades after these events, Yaroslav was going to fight with Vladimir, because he did not want to pay tribute to Kyiv. After the death of his father, Yaroslav decided to fight for power with Svyatopolk. At the same time, in the struggle for power, Yaroslav relied on Novgorodians and Varangian mercenaries, and soon married the daughter of the powerful Swedish king Olav Ingigerd.

There were several battles between brothers (or cousins), with one or the other victorious. Either Svyatopolk fled to Poland and came to Kyiv with powerful Polish-German help led by his father-in-law Boleslav, the Polish king, then Yaroslav fled to Novgorod and hired the Varangians from across the sea, then Svyatopolk went to the Pechenegs for help. Around 1019, the final victory went to Yaroslav, who ruled Kyiv until his death in 1054, with a short break for strife with his brother Mstislav, and Svyatopolk completely disappeared from the pages of the annals, subsequently receiving the nickname Cursed.

Among the many victims of the strife of Yaroslav and Svyatopolk were several of their brothers: the chronicle brought to us the names of princes Boris, Gleb and Svyatoslav Vladimirovich, who fell at the hands of the murderers. By the middle of the 11th century, worship was already taking place at the burial places of Boris and Gleb in Vyshgorod, and a church was built for their relics. The new edition of the chronicle, apparently compiled in the 1070s, shortly after the solemn transfer of the relics of Boris and Gleb to the new church in 1072, could not fail to mention the circumstances of the death of the holy brothers. According to the chronicle, shortly after the death of Vladimir, Svyatopolk sent assassins to the brothers. Boris was attacked when he was returning to Kyiv from a campaign against the Pechenegs and was praying before going to bed in his tent. The prince was wounded, and his servant was beheaded in order to remove the golden hryvnia (hoop) that was around his neck. While Boris was being taken to Kyiv, Svyatopolk found out that his brother was still alive, and sent two Varangians to finish him off, which was done. Gleb was killed near Smolensk when he was going to Kyiv, and Svyatoslav was killed on the way to Hungary, where he tried to flee.

However, the memory of the Vladimirovich strife has been preserved not only in Russia, but also in Scandinavia, where the hired Vikings returned after serving Yaroslav. The Icelandic strand (small saga), known from a single manuscript of the end of the 14th century, tells about the Russian adventures of the petty Norwegian king Eimund. There are traces of an earlier redaction in the text, in which Eimund appears to have been presented as a Swede rather than a Norwegian. Eimund and his brother Ragnar with a large army of Normans arrive at Yarisleif (Yaroslav) in Holmgard (Novgorod) shortly after the death of his father, waiting for Yarisleif to clash with his brothers Burislav, who got Kenugard (Kyiv), and Vartilav, reigning in Palteske (Polotsk) . Brothers are hired into the service of Yarislav and actively help him in the fight against Burislav. After the first clash with Burislav, Yarislav gets his brother’s possessions, then he successfully defends himself from Burislav’s attack, and on the eve of the next attack, Eymund kills Burislav with the help of cunning: he sets off towards Burislav’s approaching army, guesses the place where the king will set up a tent, bends down with a rope the oak standing over this place, waits for the arrival of Burislav, sneaks into his camp in disguise and ties a rope to a golden ball on the weather vane of the king’s tent, taking advantage of the intoxication of his people. When everyone falls asleep, he gives a sign to cut the rope, the oak straightens up and tears off the tent, Eymund attacks the sleeping people and kills Burislav, cutting off his head. Next in the strand is a story about the service of Eymund to Vartilav, which has no direct connection with the events known from Russian sources.

Trying to compare the versions of the chronicle and Eymund’s strand, the researchers went through all possible and impossible options. It has been suggested that Boleslav, Boris, Svyatopolk, along with Boleslav, are hiding under the name of Burislav. Some historians saw in the description of the murder of Burislav a story about the murder of Boris on behalf of Yaroslav, while others, on the contrary, thought that the strand tells about the death of Svyatopolk. The comparison did not give any reliable conclusion.

As it turned out, the key to the puzzle lay in an ancient Swedish legend, which Yaroslav, Ingigerd, and Eymund undoubtedly knew. The legend says that the Swedish king Agni, whose real prototype was supposed to live several centuries before the strife of the sons of Vladimir, died as a result of hanging on a golden hryvnia: in a stanza from the poem «The List of Ynglings» of the late 9th — early 10th century by the Norwegian skald (poet) Tjodolva from Hvinir it is figuratively said that a woman named Skjalf hung Agni on a rope for a golden hryvnia, and according to the anonymous Latin History of Norway, written in the second half of the 12th century, Agni “was killed with her own hands by his wife, hanging on a tree on a golden chain «. The Icelander Snorri Sturluson, who lived at the beginning of the 13th century, retold the story of Agni in somewhat more detail in the Ynglinga Saga, the first part of his book The Circle of the Earth. According to Snorri, Agni was returning from a successful campaign to the Land of the Finns, where he captured Skjalf, the daughter of the king he had killed, whom he wanted to marry. On the banks of the Stockksund Strait, on the site of modern Stockholm, Agni pitched tents under a tall tree at the edge of the forest, celebrated a feast there for the father Skjalf, who had been killed by him, and drunkenly went to bed, tightly tying his golden hryvnia around his neck. By order of Skjalf, the sleeping king was hung up on a tree with a rope, tied to a golden hryvnia. Agni inherited this hryvnia from his ancestor Visbur, whose family was forever cursed because of the refusal to return this hryvnia to its rightful owners. The sorceress Huld, who cast the curse, predicted that «the murder of a kinsman will be constantly committed in the Yngling family.»

As you can see, the legend of Agni combines the unique motifs of the annalistic story about the murder of Boris and the Scandinavian legend about the death of Burislav: the golden hryvnia of Boris’s servant and the tying of a rope to the golden ball on the top of Burislav’s tent, which seem inappropriate here, take on meaning in the legend of Agni. It can be confidently asserted that the story about the murder of Burislav in Eimund’s strand and the description of the death of Boris in the Russian chronicle go back to the story, which played with the plot of the ancient legend about the death of Agni. This narrative was undoubtedly dedicated to a real event — the contract killing of one of Vladimir’s sons. At the same time, there is no doubt that the Scandinavians took part in the murder, since this is mentioned in both versions of the story. Could the murdered man, named Burislav in the Scandinavian strand, and Boris in the Russian chronicle, be not Boris, but Svyatopolk? It could, but it’s highly unlikely. Could Svyatopolk be the killer, as the chronicle says? He could, but this is also unlikely, because we do not have any data on Svyatopolk’s connections with Scandinavia. The easiest way to explain the totality of data known to us is with the following assumption: the order to kill Boris came from his brother Yaroslav Vladimirovich, nicknamed the Wise in the 19th century. The question of who ordered the murder of Gleb and Svyatoslav remains open.

What happened to the actors of the film «Brother-2» — OUR Radio

The second part of the film about the adventures of Danila Bagrov was released on the big screens on May 11, 2000. Aleksey Balabanov did not succumb to the persuasion of Sergei Bodrov Sr. and nevertheless shot the picture in the USA.

Sergei Bodrov Jr. went missing in September 2002 in the Karmadon Gorge. We invite you to remember the rest of the actors of the film and find out how their lives turned out after filming.

Viktor Sukhorukov — Viktor Bagrov

In the film «Brother-2» Viktor Sukhorukov played the brother of Danila Bagrov. The killer’s nickname in the film was «Tatar». In the second part of the film, the directors gave him much less screen time than in the first. At the same time, the viewer remembered the character for conflicts with the American and Ukrainian mafia, as well as law enforcement officers.

Now Sukhorukov is a popular actor. In 2008 he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation.

Sergei Makovetsky — Valentin Belkin

Sergei Makovetsky received the title of People’s Artist even before the filming of Brother-2. The people of his character Valentin Belkin killed a friend of Danila Bagrov. As director Alexei Balabanov recalled, during the filming, Makovetsky tried to make his hero more human, so he played at his own discretion.

After the release of «Brother-2» the artist can be seen in other films by Balabanov, for example, «It doesn’t hurt me» and «Blind Man’s Buff». The actor is also in demand in the theatrical field.

Irina Saltykova — cameo

The film became special because the stars of domestic show business also starred in it. One of those was the singer Irina Saltykova.

Today she produces her own daughter Alisa Saltykova and is engaged in business. After participating in Brother-2, Saltykova tried to develop a career in films, but managed to get small roles in TV shows.

Kirill Pirogov — Ilya Setev

Actor Kirill Pirogov played a colleague of Danila Bagrov. He helped the protagonist organize revenge for the murder of their mutual friend.

He fully realized himself in the theater — he received a bunch of prestigious awards («The Seagull», «Crystal Turandot») and now he is staging graduation performances at the Shchukin Theater School. Successfully wrote music for films («Peter FM»).

The actor had several more notable, but not the main roles in the cinema — in the films «Walk», «Blind Man’s Buff», «Inhabited Island» and the series «Doctor Zhivago», «Trotsky», «McMafia» (Great Britain).

Alexander Dyachenko — hockey player and security guard Gromov

Athlete Alexander Dyachenko played two roles at once in «Brother-2»: the security guard of the Nikolaev bank, Kostya Gromov, nicknamed Bolshoi, and his twin brother, NHL hockey player Dmitry. It is no coincidence that the textured actor appeared in the film by chance: from the age of 93 he lived in the USA, graduated from Columbia University there and worked in the USA as a sports agent for famous Russian hockey players who began their careers overseas — this is how Alexei Morozov, Darius Kasparaitis, Jaromir Jagr appeared in the film. It was Dyachenko who agreed that Balabanov would film the scene right at the real training session of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The actor has dozens of roles in Russian films, but the most notable ones appeared not so long ago — in the TV series Major (father of the protagonist), The First (Peter I), and in the 2018 American action movie Hunter Killer, he played a Russian President Nikolai Zakarin.

Daria Yurgens — a girl of easy virtue

The prostitute Marilyn, who is “in Russian Dasha”, was played by Tomsk actress Daria Yurgens. She entered and studied at the famous Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography, and then entered the Youth Theater on the Fontanka. «Brother-2» was only the second film in the actress’s career (after the drama «About Freaks and People»).

Alas, Darya failed to build a stellar career, although she is in demand in TV series — she played in Kamenskaya, Cop Wars, for 14 years she has been filming in Sea Devils as a captain with the call sign Bagheera. Participates in musicals of the St. Petersburg theater «Baltic House».

Konstantin Muzenko — Fascist

Konstantin Muzenko got one of the most striking roles in Brother-2. He played a Fascist arms dealer. Despite the fact that the role was episodic, after the premiere of the film, Muzenko became a sought-after St. Petersburg actor.

Before the popular project, he was known as an excellent screenwriter. Then he continued to do what he loved, and also began to try himself as a director.

Konstantin Zheldin — taxi driver

The taxi driver played by Konstantin Zheldin became the symbol of Brother-2. He told Danila Bagrov about his own vision of reality.

The audience was captivated by the impulsive speech of the character, his quotes are still remembered. Konstantin Zheldin still plays in the theater and also acts in films.

Lisa Jeffrey — TV presenter

Lisa Jeffrey, who played the role of the host, Danila Bagrov’s lover, ended her film career after the release of Brother-2. She became involved in music, recording one jazz album.

Geoffrey is now an announcer and producer for Christian radio.

Ray Toler — truck driver

Prior to filming Brother 2, Ray Toyler played Uncle Rob in the comedy film Home Alone. During his career, the actor appeared on the screens about ten times. Among his works are the film «Servants of the Law», «Ambulance». Now Ray Toyler is raising his grandchildren.

Russian Emperor Alexander III was born

On February 26 (March 10), 1845, in St. Petersburg, Grand Duke Alexander Nikolayevich and his wife Maria Alexandrovna had a son, Alexander, the future Russian Emperor Alexander III.

Being the second son, Alexander was not intended to occupy the throne and prepared mainly for military activity. After the death of his elder brother Nicholas in 1865, Alexander became heir to the throne and began to receive a more extensive and fundamental education. Among his mentors were professor of Russian history S. M. Solovyov, philologist-academician J. K. Grot, General M. I. Dragomirov. The teacher of jurisprudence, law professor K. P. Pobedonostsev had the greatest influence on the crown prince.

In 1866, Alexander Alexandrovich married the bride of his late brother, the daughter of the Danish king, Princess Dagmar, who adopted the name Maria Feodorovna in Orthodoxy. The couple had five children, the eldest of whom, Nicholas, became the last Russian emperor.

Alexander held a number of military positions, including the chief ataman of all Cossack troops, the commander of the troops of the St. Petersburg Military District and the Guards Corps. From 1868 he was a member of the State Council and the Committee of Ministers. In the Russian-Turkish war (1877-1878), the Tsarevich commanded the Ruschuk detachment in Bulgaria. After the end of the war, together with Pobedonostsev, he participated in the creation of the Voluntary Fleet, a joint-stock shipping company designed to promote the foreign economic policy of the Russian government.

Alexander III ascended the throne after the assassination of his father by terrorists in March 1881. During the first months of his reign, the new emperor hesitated in choosing the course of his reign: to accept a plan to attract elected representatives to state building, or to follow the old path of unlimited autocracy. At the insistence of Pobedonostsev, Alexander III issued in April 1881 a manifesto «On the inviolability of autocracy», which led to the resignation of M.T. Loris-Melikov and his supporters. In August of the same year, the “Regulations on Measures to Protect State Security and Public Peace” were adopted. The governors received the right to close the press, trade and industrial enterprises, and educational institutions; to suspend the activities of zemstvos and city dumas. Published as «temporary», for a period of three years, this «Regulation» was constantly renewed and was valid until 1917

The new government course was visibly different from the reformist activities of Alexander II and his inner circle — the liberal-minded ministers. The beginning of the reign of Alexander III was characterized by the tightening of administrative and police repressions and censorship, in particular, the “Temporary Rules on the Press” (1882) were adopted, according to which the administration received the right to close any newspapers and magazines, deprive publishers and editors of the right to continue their professional activities.

The university statute of 1884 curtailed the autonomy of higher education: the university court was liquidated, any student associations were prohibited, and the state official — the trustee of the educational district — began to manage the entire university life.

Zemsky (1890) and City (1892) regulations tightened the administration’s control over local self-government, limiting the rights of voters from the lower strata of society. The reform weakened the electoral principle, narrowed the range of issues addressed by city governments, and expanded the scope of government powers.

At the same time, a number of measures were taken to alleviate the financial situation of the people and alleviate social tension in society: the introduction of compulsory redemption and the reduction of redemption payments, the establishment of the Peasant Land Bank, the introduction of factory inspection, the gradual abolition of the poll tax.

During the reign of Alexander III, the economic life of Russia was characterized by economic growth, which is largely due to the policy of increased patronage of domestic industry. Thanks to the activities of a number of Russian finance ministers N. Kh. Bunge, I. A. Vyshnegradsky, S. Yu. Witte, the revenues of the state treasury increased. The government of Alexander III encouraged the growth of large-scale capitalist industry, which achieved notable success: the production of metallurgy in 1886-1892 years doubled, and the railway network during this period grew by 47%.

Foreign policy under Alexander III was distinguished by the desire to keep Russia from being drawn into international conflicts. The main content of the Russian foreign policy was the turn from traditional cooperation with Germany to an alliance with France, which was concluded in 1891-1893. During the reign of Alexander III, the Russian Empire practically did not wage wars, thanks to which the Russian autocrat received the nickname «Tsar-Peacemaker».

On October 20 (November 1), 1894, Alexander III died suddenly in the Livadia Palace in the Crimea.

brother was nicknamed «Babe»

NHL

Avtomobilist defender Alexei Vasilevsky, brother of Tampa goalkeeper Andrey Vasilevsky, spoke about his relative’s childhood nickname.

— They say that Andriy was quite reserved most of the time — before the game, after it, between games. Was he really like that?

Well, he’s a goalkeeper. And these are completely different people. They have their cockroaches in their heads. Maybe it was just his pre-match ritual to keep him focused on the game.

Was he open in real life?

— Yes, he was a cheerful guy, he liked to joke.

— Did Andrey really like cats in his childhood?

— Cats. We didn’t have cats. I don’t know why he was in such love. We always had cats in childhood — first one, then another.

Did he have a nickname as a child?

— He was nicknamed «Babe» because of his year. Maybe because he was short then. It was then that he stretched out.

— And when did he grow up and become so tall?

— It happened abruptly. Literally in one summer. I didn’t even understand how it happened. At first he was shorter than me, and then bam, and became a head taller, — said Alexei Vasilevsky.
