What caused the upsurge of unique American baby names in the 1970s?

Published on December 06, 2014 by Dr. Randal S. Olson

african-americans baby names black power usa

3 min READ

Last week, I was exploring the ever-popular U.S. baby names data set and noticed a peculiar trend: The number of unique baby names has continued to rise dramatically for the last ~130 years — with the exception of the past few years, of course.

This observation could of course be explained by an increasing number of babies being born as time goes on. To account for that possibility, I plotted the unique number of baby names per 100,000 babies born.

The 1880s had the most uniquely named babies, whereas the following generations saw a marked decline in distinctive baby names until the 1960s. It’s possible that WWI followed by the Great Depression followed by WWII caused Americans to care less about giving their baby a distinctive name and more about keeping food on the table until next week. Whatever was the cause of the Great Baby Name Depression, it resulted in Baby Boomers being the least uniquely named generation in U.S. history.

These charts can lead into a dozen different stories, but today I want to focus on only one story: What caused the upsurge of unique American baby names in the 1970s?

During my search to find an answer, I ran across an interesting Freakonomics piece exploring whether a baby’s name can predict their long-term income. During the discussion of the piece, a possible answer suddenly revealed itself: the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 70s.

The Black Power movement

Back in the 1960s and 70s — only 50 years ago — African-Americans faced overwhelming discrimination. At the height of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, a growing sect of African-Americans became disillusioned with the non-violent movement led by MLK and others. These African-Americans decided instead to take a more militant stance on the civil rights movement.

This is the twenty-seventh time I have been arrested and I ain’t going to jail no more! The only way we gonna stop them white men from whuppin’ us is to take over. What we gonna start sayin’ now is Black Power!

— Stokely Carmichael (June 16, 1966)

Prior to this movement, most African-American names closely resembled names used by European-Americans. As a part of the Black Power movement, many African-Americans began to openly embrace and take pride in their heritage and began giving their children uniquely African-American names.

During this time, we began to see the rise of Arabic/Islamic names in the U.S.:

(Note: The above name frequencies could be confounded with the fact that immigration was also on the rise from the 1970s onward; these aren’t exclusively names given to African-American babies.)

African-Americans also began to create their own names, later termed «inventive names. » Prefixes such as La/Le, Da/De, Ra/Re, or Ja/Je and suffixes such as -ique/iqua, -isha, and -aun/-awn became common during this time.

African-Americans even began adopting vocabulary terms as names for their children, a trend which still survives to this day.

The Black Power and pride movement left an unmistakable mark on the U.S. historical record. It’s interesting to note, however, that many of the «uniquely African-American» names that were popular in the 1970s and 80s have fallen out of favor in modern times. Have «uniquely African-American» names gone out of style, or have African-Americans adopted a different naming scheme?

What about after the 1980s?

Do my findings explain the continued rise of distinctive baby names in the 1980s and beyond? Certainly not. Immigration — especially from Hispanic countries — has undoubtedly played a huge role in the baby name landscape. There have also been several other «unique name» movements within the U. S. — for example the recent «-Ayden» movement — that are clearly visible in the historical record. But those are stories for next time.

Demilitarized Zone on the Korean Peninsula. Three North Korean commandos seize a South Korean border post and take two border guards hostage. A group of South Korean soldiers blockade a border post and wait for further instructions.

South Korean command is holding a meeting. Do they want to unleash a war with the help of three special forces? No, this is a provocation. After all, if we open fire in the demilitarized zone, this will sharply weaken our positions at the meeting of the six-party commission (this body was created to peacefully resolve problems related to North Korean nuclear weapons). nine0003

Command sends South Korean Special Forces Alpha Group under the command of Captain Yu Si-jin to free the hostages. The group arrives. Si-jin informs the soldiers blocking the border post that he is taking command.

Si-jin and his friend Sgt. Seo Dae-yeon, unarmed and with their hands up, approach the post building. They are trying to start negotiations with the enemy. The door of the post opens, a North Korean soldier is shown there with a machine gun at the ready. He orders the captain and sergeant to go inside. nine0003

Si-jin is talking to the Northmen commander (Captain An Zhu-kang). He says that Zhu-kang with his soldiers can lay down their arms and return to their home without hindrance. Zhu-kang says that military honor does not allow him to surrender without a fight. The opponents agree to settle the dispute with hand-to-hand combat. They take out their knives and a fight breaks out. Southerners win. Si-jin puts a knife to his opponent’s throat. Zhu-kang says that Si-jin won’t kill him anyway: you in South Korea care about your reputation so much that you would never do it. Si-jin says that their countries have been living separately for 70 years. And what can you know about South Korea? Zhu-kang says that he is a soldier. And, therefore, from the dead from me there will be no sense. Si-jin lowers the knife. Zhu-kang: See you next time, Captain! Si-jin: I hope we don’t meet again in this situation. nine0003

Si-jin and Dae-young in civilian clothes are on leave in the city. They shoot at the shooting range with toy guns. As a reward, they want to receive plush toys. But the bullets miss their target. Si-jin says the guns are out of sight. The owner of the shooting gallery informs the military that his guns are an exact copy of the weapon used by the American Delta special forces. You probably didn’t have it in your hands.

Shouts are heard: thief, stop the thief! Some guy (Kim Chi-bim) took away a waist bag from one of the merchants and, sitting on a moped, tries to hide. nine0003

Si-jin and Dae-young get in his way. Dae-yeon says that their toy weapons are effective at a distance of no more than five meters. When the thief approaches the military at this distance, they shoot at him, bringing down a hail of plastic bullets on his forehead. Ji-beam falls off the moped. The military take the bag from him and give it to the owner. Will you contact the police? I have no time to do this, the goods need to be delivered. So take care of it yourself.

Si-jin and Dae-young are bending over the thief, examining his injuries. Don’t move, your spine might be damaged. Si-jin asks the owner of the shooting range if he can sell him some plush toys. He says that the toys are not for sale. C-jin threatens to win all the prizes. The owner of the shooting gallery sells him toys. Can you lend me a ballpoint pen? Yes. nine0003

An ambulance takes the thief to the hospital.

Friends are sitting in a cafe. Dae-young says he feels sorry for the guy. I was also in a gang at his age. And did you see how great he was grouped when he fell off the moped?

Dae-young wants to call someone, reaches into his pocket for the phone and does not find his gadget there. Si-jin: so you felt sorry for the thief who stole your phone? Dae-young: I’ll kill him! He’s in the hospital now, let’s go.

Ji-beam is brought to the hospital. He is examined by a doctor (Kang Mo-en). She reads the inscription made with a pen on her patient’s hand: he is a thief. Don’t give him anesthesia. Mo-young examines a makeshift neck brace made from two plush toys: an interesting solution. Okay, cracked ribs, sprained ankle. Need an x-ray. Mo-yeon leaves the patient in the care of the nurses, she leaves on business. nine0003

Left alone, Ji-bim calls his accomplices and asks them to pick him up from the hospital. He leaves the hospital and hobbles down the street. He is seen through the window by Mo-en. She runs out of the hospital and brings the patient back to the emergency room. Zhi-bim demands to be released. The nurses tell him that for this the patient must sign a waiver of treatment and pay for medical services. So you didn’t cure me! The doctor examined you. State your insurance number. What if I refuse to pay? We’ll call the police. Ji-bim says he needs to go to the toilet. Mo-yeon says she doesn’t believe him. Zhi-bim: Yes, I will leave you my phone as a pledge. He gives Mo-yeon the stolen phone and goes to the restroom, where he escapes safely. nine0003

Dae-young dials his phone number, but Mo-young does not want to answer the call because he thinks it is the thief’s accomplices calling.

Si-jin and Dae-young arrive at the hospital. They dial the stolen phone and hear the phone in the pocket of Mo-yeon’s robe ringing. Si-jin and Dae-young approach her and inquire about the fate of her patient. Mo-young doesn’t want to talk to suspicious men. She says that she will call security, that strangers should not be in the hospital.

Si-jin and Dae-young go outside. They turn a corner and see a group of guys brutally beating Zhi-beam. C-jin offers to intervene. Dae-young: are you sure? Look how many there are. Friends approach the place of dismantling. The bandits advise them to get out the best they can. Si-jin leans over the beaten thief: did you steal the phone from them too? The bandits tell the military that Zhi-bim wanted to leave the gang, and you have to pay for this. And how much? Five thousand dollars. Dae-young says prices have risen significantly. So you are one of ours? nine0003

Cjin takes out his wallet from his pocket. I will pay for it, I have money. But only if you can take the wallet from me.

Two guys take out knives: look, if it’s empty, blame yourself. Si-jin instantly cracks down on two bandits. Dae-yeon picks up a knife dropped by one of the guys from the ground, examines it. And you call them knives? Just laughter. Come on, give us all your knives and pistols!

The bandits take out their knives and attack the soldiers. Si-jin: you said it in vain. Dae-young: I already regret it. Well, at least they don’t have guns. A fight starts. nine0003

Mo-yeon tries to find a runaway patient. A woman in military uniform arrives at the hospital (Lieutenant Yun Meng-ju). She and Mo-young get to know each other. Meng-ju says she is looking for someone close to her. Mo-young thinks it’s about a thief. She says that her patient fled in an unknown direction. And you have nothing to do here.

Mo-yeon tells one of her colleagues that they once studied with Myung-ju, and then she stole her boyfriend from her. But he still left her. Now she got along with some guy, he looks like 20 years old. A colleague says that, according to her information, Meng-ju’s boyfriend is a military man, some kind of sergeant. nine0003

Dae-young and Si-jin bring Zhi-bim, who was severely beaten, to the hospital. Mo-yong puts the patient in bed. Is that how they beat you? Zhi-beam says that this is not so: on the contrary, they saved me. Mo-en does not believe him: do not be afraid, there is good security here, you can tell the whole truth.

Dae-young steps aside and collides with Meng-ju. They sort things out. Dae-young says he doesn’t want to date Myung-joo simply because he has fallen out of love with her. You are completely indifferent to me. The offended woman, as an officer, orders the sergeant to freeze in place and not leave him until his death. nine0003

Si-jin tries to convince Mo-young that he is not a bandit. She wants to call the police. Si-jin persuades her not to do this: we are military on leave, we will have to write a bunch of explanations. Let’s go without the police. And Meng-ju can confirm my identity. Mo-yeon: How do you know her? We studied together at the military academy.

Si-jin and Mo-young approach Meng-ju. The captain immediately removes the sergeant from his post. Meng-ju furiously yells at Mo-yeon that the guys are really military. But they are on their own. Meng-ju leaves the hospital. Mo-young: ok, we just need to deal with the fight. nine0003

A guard shows Mo-young a CCTV footage showing Si-jin and Dae-young famously cracking down on gangsters who beat Mo-young’s patient. She is delighted with what she sees. She asks for forgiveness from Si-jin. Young people get to know each other.

Si-jin asks Mo-yeon to examine the wound he received in the battle with the saboteurs. They agree that the captain will come to the hospital to change the dressing. Si-jin: I want to be treated by a handsome doctor. Mo-yeon: so it will be me. nine0003

C-jin comes to the hospital. He receives an urgent call. He calls Mo-young and says that he won’t be able to see her today. And where are you? On the roof. Mo-young goes up to the roof of the hospital and sees a military helicopter coming for Si-jin

Si-jin and a group of colleagues take off on a plane for a business trip to Afghanistan.

Si-jin and his detachment, together with a group of American special forces «Delta», must free the hostages taken by terrorists from the UN mission. During the exercise, Shin-jin quarrels with the commander of the Delta, they sort things out in a one-on-one duel. After that, by joint efforts, the special forces of the two countries free the hostages. nine0003

At the same time, Mo-young is performing the most difficult operation, which she is given to successfully complete.

Shin-jin returns from a business trip and sets up a date with Mo-young. Young people come to Mo-yeon’s house and order dinner. The date ends with a romantic visit to the cinema.

Fairy tale, kindness and adventure: 7 cartoons to watch during the New Year holidays

Omsk Here more 1

We are talking about animated masterpieces of cinematography with a magical atmosphere. nine0003

Photo: Omsk HereOmsk Here

A good movie is something that can warm you up on January evenings like a mug of fragrant tea or your favorite blanket. And especially the animation gives warmth and a feeling of a New Year’s fairy tale. «Omsk Here» has selected seven cozy animated films for you to watch in the first days of the year, when it’s so nice to spend time at home and not rush anywhere.

Video of the day

«A Christmas Carol» (2009) 12+

Cartoon based on one of Charles Dickens’ famous «Christmas stories» directed by Robert Zemeckis. The animation is made in a very realistic manner, which sometimes seems like we are watching a movie, not a cartoon, and is based on motion capture technology. Therefore, in the characters, the features of the actors who gave the heroes their voices and facial expressions are guessed. The cast of the cartoon is truly stellar: here is the king of comedy Jim Carrey, and such venerable British actors as Gary Oldman and Colin Firth. In the center of the plot is the old and embittered miser Ebenezer Scrooge, a money changer who spent his whole life caring only about increasing his wealth. His image was perfectly filled with the inimitable Jim Carrey. Mr. Scrooge despises friendship, love and hates Christmas. One day, on the eve of a bright holiday, he is visited by ghosts who intend to open the old man’s eyes to his life, and guide Scrooge through his past, present and future. All in all, A Christmas Carol is a combination of gorgeous animation and a compelling storyline. nine0003

«Dreamkeepers» (2012) 0+

An animated film based on a series of books by American writer William Joyce. The tape became the best cartoon of 2013 according to the Golden Globe. Dream Guardians — Sandman, Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and Easter Bunny — protect the dreams and hopes of children all over the world and protect children from bad dreams. One day, the villain Kromeshnik decides to steal childhood dreams and replace them with nightmares. To destroy his plan, the spirit of winter Ice Jack is sent to help the Guardians. Jack is a carefree teenager who only wants to use his magical powers for fun. The new member of the team will have to «get down to business» and establish relationships with experienced colleagues, because only by joining forces, the Guardians will be able to resist evil and save children’s peace. nine0003

The Dream Keepers is a gripping story with true Christmas spirit and colorful characters. For example, Santa Claus, aka Nick Severyanin, clearly has Russian roots — this can be understood from his accent in the original voice acting and the exclamations «Oh, Shostakovich!» or «Rimsky-Korsakov!». It is also interesting that at the beginning of the cartoon on the Dream Works branded screensaver, instead of the usual boy sitting on the moon with a fishing rod, we see the main character of the «Guardians» Jack.

«Polar Express», (2004) 6+

Another animated masterpiece from director Robert Zemeckis. The film is based on the short children’s story «The Polar Express» by Chris Van Allsburg (author of «Jumanji»). Incredibly fabulous story tells about the eight-year-old boy Chris, who lost faith in Santa Claus. However, on Christmas Eve, a real Christmas miracle happens to him: a magical train arrives at the boy’s house, bound for the North Pole, and Chris sets off on the most exciting adventure of his life, in which he will meet the main winter wizard. nine0003

«The Polar Express» entered the Guinness Book of Records as the first film where all the acting was digitized by real people. For example, Tom Hanks «plays» five roles in it at once: the main character Chris, his father, the train conductor, the Spirit of Christmas and Santa Claus. The magic that the cartoon is filled with seems to “break through” through the screen and fill everything around. If you, like the main character, have decided that there is no magic in your life, The Polar Express will definitely make you believe that miracles exist. nine0003

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) 12+

A cult cartoon, the screenplay for which the brilliant Tim Burton wrote based on his 1982 poem. According to the story, Jack Skellington, the king of the city of Halloween, accidentally finds himself in the city of Christmas, where instead of the usual darkness and monsters, he sees fun, kindness and homeliness. What he sees touches Jack to the core, and he decides to feel what it’s like to bring people happiness, not fear. The king of Halloween decides to kidnap Santa Claus and make Christmas himself, and the holiday is filled with a frightening atmosphere. nine0003

All the characters in The Nightmare Before Christmas are real dolls designed by Tim Burton. One minute of the cartoon took a week of painstaking work. The film won an Oscar in 1994 for Best Visual Effects. Besides, it’s a musical. Composer Danny Elfman, along with Tim Burton, wrote beautiful compositions for the film, which were subsequently covered by many popular artists. In a word, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a masterpiece of screenwriting, visual and musical art!

«The Snow Queen» (1957) 0+

Released in 1957, the cartoon collected not only Soviet children, but also American children on TV screens: in 1960-1970, during the New Year holidays, it was broadcast on US television. The plot, probably, your parents can easily retell to you: the Snow Queen takes a boy named Kai to her domain and turns his kind heart into a cold piece of ice. His girlfriend, a little girl Gerda, is sent to save Kai. nine0003

Interesting fact: The Snow Queen was the deciding factor when Hayao Miyazaki decided whether he should do animation. By the way, cartoon artists Leonid Shvartsman and Alexander Vinokurov created the appearance of the Snow Queen using rotoscoping — a frame-by-frame redrawing of the film footage with actress Maria Babanova, who voiced the cruel winter sorceress. Cartoon «The Snow Queen» is a masterpiece of world animation and is able to give you one of the most memorable and emotional festive evenings. nine0003

«Twelve Months» (1956) 0+

Another wonderful Soviet animated film based on Samuil Marshak’s play of the same name. According to the plot of the story, the spoiled princess wanted to bring a basket of snowdrops to her in winter. The stepmother sends her stepdaughter Nastenka, a girl with an open soul and a kind heart, to the forest. In a forest clearing, she meets twelve wizards of the seasons — brothers-months and shares her misfortune with them. Months help Nastenka, and she brings spring flowers to her stepsister. However, the story ends here for me…

In addition to the USSR, the animated film was popular in Argentina and Spain. While watching, you want to look at the beautiful animation in a watercolor manner, and the unusual psychedelic cover of Soyuzmultfilm at the beginning of the cartoon immediately attracts you to the screen. Music by composer Moses Weinberg makes the story even more fabulous. And, of course, one cannot fail to mention the amazing voice acting of Soviet artists Lyudmila Kasatkina (stepdaughter), Georgy Vitsin (February), Erast Garin (Princess’s teacher).
