meaning, fate, character, origin, compatibility with other names
Of course, the name Maxim is one of the most beloved, «folk» names and, as statistics note, in our time Maxim is experiencing a peak in popularity. As the author of the book “You and Your Name” Lev Uspensky said, “The fate of a person can transform both the sound and the meaning of his name,” and the wise Russian people said the same thought even more briefly: “Don’t look at the nickname, but look at the bird.”
However, our wise people did not deny that all Maxim birds have common features.
The name «Maxim» is of Latin origin. «Maximus», meaning the greatest, was a generic name for wealthy Romans. In Russia, the name took root at first among simple classes. One can recall, for example, military officer Maxim Maksimovich, who came out of the lower classes from Lermontov’s “Hero of Our Time”, or Maxim’s servant from Goncharov’s cycle of essays “Servants of the Old Age”, who stole his master’s coat with a beaver collar and failed to come up with a worthy excuse. The hero of the popular in the thirties film “The Trilogy of Maxim” was also from the people (by the way, today the wonderful song “The blue ball is spinning, spinning) and the charming adventurer Maxim Perepelitsa were preserved from the film . .. It is no coincidence that the “folk” name “Maxim” was chosen as a pseudonym by the writer Alexei Peshkov, becoming Maxim Gorky.
The fate of the name Maxim
If you believe that the name is fate, then fate is favorable for the name Maxim. The name Maxim was borne by many saints revered in Christianity. Among them, for example, the Monk Maxim the Greek, an Orthodox oppositionist who vehemently criticized the Russian ecclesiastical and political system.
The famous onomast Alexandra Superanskaya noted that even at the beginning of the 2000s, the name Maxim was incredibly in demand and, along with Alexander and Alexei, represented the top three most popular male names. It is safe to say that such a picture is observed to this day. In Moscow, Maxim generally holds the lead since 2011, occasionally losing the palm to Artyom, and in Perm he is not inferior to anyone at all. Many families name their sons in honor of the Olympic champion Maxim Trankov, a native of Perm.
Meanwhile, the name was not always ubiquitous. In the book «On Russian Names», written by Superansky and Suslova, for example, there are tables of the main names of four generations, compiled for 1988 in the Petersburg Palace of Registration of the Birth «Baby». It is strange to imagine, but for a thousand residents of St. Petersburg, over thirty-five years old, there was not a single Maxim! As Superanskaya says, the name «rested» and «went uphill» only starting from the seventies.
It is interesting that films were made about Maximov: Maxim Perepelitsa, the hero of the comedy of the same name 1955 years old, black boy Maximka from the movie «Maximka», which appeared on the screens three years earlier. But even this circumstance did not launch the name into the broad masses. However, reviewing both films, we can conclude: a common feature that characterizes both cinematic heroes is incredible charm, of course, characteristic of Maxims.

The nature of the name Maxim
Maximov, born before the end of the nineties, can be described as very proud people. It is understandable: among the countless kolyans, roofing felts and earrings, being the only Max in the yard was considered incredibly cool.
Maxims, as a rule, are favorites of mothers, and such a name was given to a child in the hope of distinguishing it from others. Which, I must say, the Maxims successfully succeeded.
Maxims like to be the center of attention, as a rule, they are artistically and musically gifted. It is no coincidence that there are so many Maximovs among musicians. Maxim Shostakovich, Maxim Dunaevsky, Maxim Pokrovsky, Max Fadeev, Maxim Leonidov. There are many Maxims among poets and writers: let us recall Voloshin, whose name Maximilian is a variation of the name Maxim.
Maxims are incredibly stubborn, often acting against logic. But a special flair tells them what it is worth spending years of life on. The boring and monotonous work that Maxims are capable of leads them to a high result, moreover, where, it would seem, the breed has been worked out. Let’s remember another great Maxim — Max Planck. He began to study physics against the advice of friends and acquaintances, who assured him that «the well-proportioned edifice of science has already been built.» As a result, Planck became the founder of quantum physics, discovered a new variable and received the Nobel Prize.
A similar story can be told about the poet Maxim Amelin, who, despite all the mentors, studied the forgotten poetry of the 18th century and, as a result, became the owner of the highest poetic award. A similar story is with Maxim Krongauz, who managed to make lectures on the Russian language a fashionable hobby for young people.
Even having matured, Maxims remain sissy. And if it so happens that, for some reason, Maxim did not reach the highest point, then Maximov’s mothers will definitely have a hard time. The Maxims will first of all go to present their claims to them.
Origin of the name Maxim
As we have already noted, the origin of the name is foreign, but the name has become a real old Russian one. In the twentieth century, it “rested” for a long time, but at the end of the eighties, 35 out of a thousand newborns were already called Maxims. This circumstance made it possible to include the name «Maxim» in the category of names that are widespread (from 2 to 5 percent per thousand newborns), but not massive (over five percent per thousand newborns). Until recently, Maxim was still inferior to Alexander.
Goncharov described Maximov’s appearance surprisingly accurately in his essays. His servant Maxim was «a healthy, strongly built, muscular man of short stature». Thanks to excellent health and athletic build, Maxims make excellent athletes (mainly in winter sports), achieving great results. Let’s remember biathletes Maxim Mikhailov and Maxim Chudov, skier Maxim Vylegzhanin, figure skaters Maxim Kovtun and Maxim Marinin, ski acrobat Maxim Burov.
Another vocation of Maxims is military activity. If you think that we will remember the Maxim machine gun, then you are mistaken. The name has nothing to do with the machine gun at all, since the weapon got its name from the name of the creator «Maxim».
However, military activities are not alien to the Maxims. The effect is that by nature the Maxims are revolutionaries. One of the most famous Maksimov is an associate of Bogdan Khmelnitsky Maxim Krivonos, who led the peasant uprising. It is no coincidence that the name Maxim Maksimovich, which Lermontov chose for his hero. Peasant stubbornness, honest service, ingenuity and valor are characteristic features of both Maxim Maksimovich and Maxim Perepelitsa and even the Strugatsky hero Maxim, who has the ability to withstand gunshot wounds.
Maxims are handsome, they like to show off in front of a mirror, often paying too much attention to their own appearance.
Like the hero of the film “Maxim Perepelitsa”, they love to puff out their cheeks, talk about their imaginary and real exploits and, in company, pull the blanket over themselves. Therefore, it is not surprising that in modern society, Maxim runs the risk of running into a phrase that has become a meme: Maxim, go ahead … or the question: “Do you know where Maxim will go?”
Maxims are quick-tempered and will not tolerate if something is not done according to them. Everyone knows about hot temper as a characteristic feature of the figure skater Maxim Trankov. And with age, this quality increases.
Name compatibility Maxim
Charming Maxim is a real favorite of women. But he is unlikely to stop at one constant companion. First, because he will begin to sort out in a manner characteristic of his nature. Secondly, he will constantly compare all the ladies of the heart with his mother. Maxim has the highest probability of a strong relationship with the names: Alevtina, Alice, Alfiya, Antonina, Bella, Vera, Victoria, Vladislav, Henrietta, Glafira, Elena, Zhanna, Iraida, Muse, Natalya, Oksana, Rimma, Susanna, Taisiya, Uliana, Fekla, Emilia.
Things will not be so rosy with girls bearing names: Anastasia, Angelina, Violetta, Gella, Dominika, Eva, Zoya, Ilona, Claudia, Lyudmila, Maya, Marianna, Olga, Polina, Rada, Raisa, Harita, Elvira.
