Cartoons and Comic Books for Building Readers

In homeschooling, using cartoons and comic books for building readers can be valuable tool. These resources can help kids learn to read and develop important reading skills. They are also great for encouraging reluctant readers. To learn how to use these tools in your homeschool, keep reading.

Pin this for reference!

Teaching your kids to read can seem like a serious and overwhelming task, but in my experience, it doesn’t have to be a chore to teach your kids to read. We know of very few adults that have left home without this important skill. At my house, two of my young readers nearly taught themselves! I had an experienced homeschool mom of five once tell me when her kids can read Calvin and Hobbes comics independently, that is when she considers them to be fluent readers. I was taken back at first, but the more I thought about it, it made sense. There is a lot of value in reading graphic-heavy books, especially as we teach our kids to read.

The Sunday Funnies or graphic novels are great places to start. At our house, Pooch Cafe and Garfield are both popular. These books often have stories that take place over a few daily comics or only a page or two in their book form. As reading fluency grows, other longer-form graphic novels can be brought in to keep their interest as their skills build. More publishers are recognizing the helpful nature of graphic novels for young readers and are creating new titles with this in mind. Science Comics is a favorite non-fiction series at our house, and the Hilo series by Judd Winick is a fun fiction read.

Illustrations are Important

At what age did you start reading the Sunday Comics? There aren’t more than a few dozen words in most newspaper comics, but each of the comic panels tells a story. The sequential art in a comic strip is just as important to understanding the story as the words, and with emerging readers, the illustrations of comic strips provided needed context to help them decipher the words. An illustration in a picture book may represent several sentences of the story while a comic strip is just a single thought or moment.

Comic strips also help our young readers get used to reading from left to right to follow the story, another important building block to reading readiness. This is another reason why comic books are great potential tools for teaching reading skills and reading comprehension.

New Vocabulary Words

I hadn’t ever thought of the reading levels of comics until my friend explained her Calvin and Hobbes strategy to me. I went and looked up the reading level of Calvin and Hobbes, I was surprised to discover it was rated for an upper elementary reading level! When I went through the Calvin and Hobbes books we have on the shelf, there are some big words in there! Despite the stereotype of being a comic strip, it engages in some very thoughtful and profound philosophical and social situations.

In a comic there is less space than a picture book to convey an idea, so the words have to be chosen more carefully, and specific words are often used to convey meaning more precisely than a generic term. This makes reading comic books a great way to increase students’ vocabulary. Some even say Calvin is a gifted child so it is important his vocabulary matches his character.

Fewer Words on the Page

One of my readers is dyslexic so they needed extra help to get started learning to read and he needed fewer words on the page to feel comfortable reading. The small chunks of text found in the speech bubble of a comic or in long-form comic books are a great tool to give reluctant readers more confidence to read a denser narrative text. If I can read a 50-page comic book I can read a shorter book with fewer pictures. My dyslexic reader had a slower start to reading but when it clicked they caught up quickly to match their siblings. They still prefer to read picture books and graphic-heavy books over narrative structures like a traditional novel or a book with all text.

Interesting Stories

Our family loves stories and it’s an important part of our family culture. Dad reads bedtime stories every night and we listen to audiobooks on any trip we take in the car. My kids have grown up listening to great stories but when they were learning to read they were disinterested in the beginning readers available. They wanted to read the real stories like they heard every day at home. Presenting them with comics was a fantastic way for them to begin to read interesting stories sooner because the clear panel illustrations helped them fill in the meaning of the words they couldn’t read yet and helped them decode it.

My oldest was reading Calvin and Hobbes independently for a while and one day we were reading a sign that references the comic and they read it aloud to us for practice. We corrected them when they pronounced the E in Hobbes instead of letting it be silent. They continued to argue with us about how to say it. But we had never read it aloud with them, so they were pronouncing it wrong in the head for several months. Even with the wrong pronunciation they still understood that was the character’s name and the meaning because of the context of the story.

Look Beyond the Beginning Readers

Next time you are at the library with your emerging reader and they don’t like any of the learn-to-read books, take them to the comic book section or ask for the graphic novels and see if they can find something to catch their interest. If you want to be a little bit selfish you could even see if your favorite childhood comic has been published in book form to share with your kids. You might just enjoy listening to them read to you more when the story is more interesting as well!

Cartoons and films about books and reading… — Vladivostok Centralized Library System

Through the images embodied in the cinema, schoolchildren learn literature better and come closer to understanding it. And even though the movie, as a rule, is not too similar to the original, it’s still great to see your favorite book on the screen.

In library No. 13 On July 10, within the framework of the children’s cinema «From the bookshelf to the screen», an acquaintance with Jan Larry’s book «The Adventures of Karik and Valya» took place.

First, the children were told about the life and work of the writer and his books, in more detail it was told about the most famous and loved by many generations of children book “The Adventures of Karik and Vali”. Children received information about the most interesting episodes of the work, depicting the unique flora and fauna. During the event, feedback was provided to young readers. One of the participants of the event, Valera Tikhomirov, was fascinated by this topic; he shared his observations about the behavior of ants and other insects. Many children became interested in unfamiliar facts from the life of flora and fauna and asked for literature from which they could learn more about wildlife. The children were recommended the magazine «Svirel».

After a fascinating conversation and discussion of the book, the children were shown the Soviet cartoon of the same name, which added to the idea of the book. The children’s cinema turned out to be interesting and informative

Library No. 4 continues the weekly meetings of the children in the children’s cinema room: «Heroes of books are calling to the cinema.» Often, it is worth watching an excerpt from a movie based on the plot of a fairy tale or a story, and you immediately want to pick up a book yourself and read it. And also, it’s great when there are friends nearby with whom you can share your impressions about fascinating and exciting stories.

It is much more interesting to watch stories about Russian heroes and other fairy-tale characters if you know where Kikimora or Koschei the Immortal came from in the legends — and the children learned this from the wonderful book by Anna Nikolskaya «Slavic Miraculous Yudology». Movies about animals are more touching after we learn the stories of faithful four-legged friends from the books of Jack London. Movies about family values make you think more strongly after reading Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Discussion of the plot in a friendly company also becomes more detailed: children have a growing desire to speak out and share something. Various games, puzzles, crosswords and master classes pleasantly complement our gatherings.

Young readers are looking forward to the next Thursday, because they will learn a lot of new and interesting things. And, of course, the guys are always happy to meet old and new friends!

On July 16 in library №2 children were shown the film «Timur and his team», which demonstrates true friendship, mutual assistance, modesty, honor, dignity. The children, after watching the film, agreed that in our time there are the same sympathetic children and adults who come to the rescue and mutual assistance. Now they are not called «Timurovites», but — volunteers.

Creation of cartoons as a technique for the formation of semantic reading in extracurricular activities | Methodical development (Grade 4):

Creation of cartoons as a technique for the formation of semantic reading in extracurricular activities

Perevozchikova Larisa Leonidovna, primary school teacher of the first qualification category.

Relevance

Currently, it is generally recognized that the decline in the interest of the younger generation in reading has the scale of a global trend. Therefore, in many countries of the world, including Russia, measures are being taken to counteract this phenomenon.

In conditions of weakening interest in reading, the successful implementation of an extracurricular activity program can not only increase this interest, but also form the need to use reading as a means of understanding the world and oneself in this world. Teaching reading and reading comprehension activates attention, memory, imagination, thinking, emotions, forms and develops aesthetic feelings, strong-willed qualities, self-control skills, and intellectual independence.

Extracurricular activities for younger students are a way to learn what a regular lesson cannot teach. A diverse form of organization of extracurricular activities significantly increases the activity and performance of children. The stimulus of activity is the personal interest of the student.

For the successful formation of the foundations of semantic reading in extracurricular activities, innovative means of work are used: computer and multimedia technologies, which significantly increase the efficiency of raising interest in a book, in reading. Non-standard forms of work in extracurricular activities develop the speech of students, as well as increase the educational motivation of children and, most importantly, educate a competent reader. In this case, the result of such activity may be the creation of an animated film.

Creating a cartoon is one of the effective semantic reading techniques that requires students to read the text in detail. In other words, try to “make the world of the book tangible”, show the work in a different format. Digital technology comes to the rescue. The book by Yuri Krasny «Cartoon by Children’s Hands» helped a lot in my work, which tells about the methodology of animation pedagogy, about the concept of creative development of children by means of animated films.
The process of creating a cartoon is painstaking, it requires diligence and patience, and most importantly, motivation for reading, continuing to get acquainted with the book.

There are different ways to create animation. Students of the 4th grade in the 2018-2019 academic year created three cartoons:

  • Plasticine cartoon «Little Raccoon» based on the work of B, Zakhoder
  • Multimedia cartoon «The Whale and the Cat» based on the work of B, Zakhoder. POINT program.
  • Animated cartoon «Christmas Tree» based on the work of M. Zoshchenko.

Currently, the main way to create animation is a computer. Therefore, to create cartoons, you must first learn special programs, and this takes a lot of time. But, the most difficult thing when creating animated films is to come up with a plot!

The formation of semantic reading in extracurricular activities

In the development of a competent student-reader, not only activity in the lesson, but also extracurricular activities play an important role.

The child’s positive attitude to reading begins from the moment when he feels himself a participant in the events that the book opens before him.

I believe that animation opens up a wide world of human feelings and relationships to the reader, awakens the imagination, affirms kindness and justice.

Working on creating a cartoon is one of the ways to develop the reader’s imagination. According to scientists, many difficulties in understanding and memorizing the text are associated with the so-called «lazy imagination».

Role-playing and role-playing can awaken the imagination of young readers.

In the work I used tasks of different levels when working with text.

Option #1 — Task: Read the text. Find sentences in the text that match the illustrations. Arrange the illustrations in order as events develop in the text, and write a sentence under each illustration (you can cut the sentence out of the text and stick it on).

Option #2 — Task: Read the text. Find the most important sentences that reveal the sequence of events. Create illustrations for these sentences using elements. Arrange the illustrations in order and write a sentence under each illustration (you can cut the sentence out of the text and stick it on). Option No. 3 — Task: Read the text. Find and underline the most important sentences that reveal the sequence of events. Take a photo of these sentences (dramatization, theatricalization, animation).

Methodology for creating a cartoon

The most important thing in this work is the literary basis of the cartoon being created. Stages of the teacher’s work methodology:

1. Acquaintance with a literary work

At the first stage, we carefully read the work, pay attention to all the details. We try to accurately formulate our thoughts and feelings.

Then the children choose the episode they want to recreate in the cartoon, write the script. A discussion begins on each frame, the background on which the action will take place.

2. Working with the script

Students take a piece of paper and draw what the character appears to be, the background on which the action takes place, select colors, where which character is located in the frame, what movements and actions they perform, what they say. They make a storyboard.

3. Creation of characters

Making models of actors. At the next stage, modeling of plasticine parts, drawings begins. The plasticine character is convenient in that it can be assembled and disassembled. multimedia cartoon

4. Creating frames
For this you need a tripod, a camera.

5. Assembling cartoons on the computer

The shooting stage ends, assembling the cartoon on the computer begins. We combine all the frames in the computer to make a movie. For convenience, we put each scene in separate folders. Open the folder from the first scene and move it to the IMOVE program. To dubbed the film separately. Next, give the movie a name and save it.

6. Presentation

All cartoons were created for the holidays «Mother’s Day», «New Year», «March 8», which were successfully presented at extracurricular activities. After a successful presentation to parents, all the cartoons were presented to all elementary school classes.
