What to Look for in Maternity Leggings & 6 Looks to Style Them

Leggings are an essential in every mom’s wardrobe–especially when you are pregnant. Your body is changing every week and it’s one of the only things that you can count on fitting throughout your pregnancy and after baby. The problem is finding a good pair of leggings. Some are too thin, too long, too short, make you hot, roll down, and the list of issues goes on. But we’ve found an amazing pair of maternity leggings moms are raving about that are worth every penny. We’ve tried many leggings throughout the years and these from Kindred Bravely are a pair we just had to share. They are made to last all throughout your pregnancy, after baby, and even for multiple pregnancies! Here’s what to look for in a good pair of leggings, what we love about these leggings, and how you can style yours before and after baby.

What to Look for in Maternity Leggings

1. Good coverage.

Some maternity leggings don’t cover the full belly as your bump grows, and that can be annoying. I had a few pairs of leggings that did this and you could always see the top of my leggings through my shirt. The top of the elastic would also leave a mark on my belly by the end of the day. Not cool. What I love about the Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity Leggings is that there is full coverage. The soft, stretchy waistband rises over your baby bump or postpartum tummy, ensuring that it won’t dig in to your tummy or irritate a C-section incision. You want your leggings to provide full coverage so you feel like your body and your baby are cozy and covered.

2. Doesn’t roll down or ride up.

This can be a problem with any leggings–maternity or not. But when you’re pregnant, you know that rolling down/riding up happens more often than not with a growing bump. Thankfully, we don’t have this problem with these leggings. 🙂 They don’t roll or slide down when you move or go from sitting to standing, and they don’t ride up as you go throughout your day. These mold to your body and stay put.

3. Quality material.

Look for a pair of leggings that is made of good material. These Louisa leggings from Kindred Bravely are awesome because they aren’t see-through when you bend and move, and we noticed that they don’t collect lent. Cool! And when you do get something on them–and it happens often with a baby–those spills, smudges or smears easily wipe away.

Something else that’s nice about quality material is that it can provide better coverage and hide any so-called imperfections. These leggings are very forgiving and provide gentle smoothing all throughout the body. They hide cellulite and loose skin and moms are loving these leggings as their bodies grow and change from pregnancy to postpartum.

4. Thick but not too thick.

Some leggings will try to provide better coverage and smoothing for mamas, but then they end up being too thick.  The Kindred Bravely Louisa leggings are thick enough to keep you warm, but the material isn’t suffocating for those hot summer months! It’s a great in-between–exactly what you want.

5. Good length.

As a girl that’s 5’1″ most leggings are a little too long for me, but I make them work. However, ask other women who are taller than me (which is the majority of people!) if they have this issue. A lot of leggings end up being too short for them, and this tends to be a more common problem. And if the leggings shrink, forget about it.

These leggings have been a mama favorite because they are a great length–not short but not too long.

6. Lasts for all of life’s stages.

We’re firm believers that leggings are a must-have and a staple in every woman’s closet. Over the years we’ve gone through multiple leggings pretty quickly and we’ve noticed that you get what you pay for. These Louisa Ultra-High Waisted Maternity Leggings are worth every penny because they really are great for bump, baby and beyond. And they will last, too! You’ll find yourself wearing them for baby number two, three and four! 🙂

Lounging at Home

Pregnancy: Wear a cute fitted tee and show off that bump with your leggings! You can throw on a zip up jacket for an athleisure look with tennis shoes between running errands and lounging at home.

Postpartum: Lounging at home is what you should be doing when you are in the postpartum period (12 weeks post-birth). Pair these leggings with your favorite nursing tank and a cute cardigan and your slippers and your set for snuggling comfortably with your newborn. These leggings are great for breastfeeding moms because you won’t have your back or belly showing as your nurse your little one.

Long Top or Layer Your Leggings

Pregnancy: We love a fitted top to celebrate that bump and pairing it with a fun kimono with your leggings. You can wear heels, flats or booties depending on what season and what look you are going for.

Postpartum: We love a long denim top that is loose and forgiving during the postpartum time with leggings. An easy yet pulled together look.

Dress with Leggings

Pregnancy: We’re all about layering, and these leggings are fashionable and functional. Wear a dress that you love with some cute booties and you are good to go! We particularly love this look because if you want to wear one of your pre-pregnancy dresses that might be a little too short to wear now, your leggings allow you to still rock that cute look! Slip on some fun shoes and go.

Postpartum: On the days that you do venture out of the house with baby, leggings will be your best friend yet again! Grab a loose fitted dress, a long sweater dress or a t-shirt dress and some flats along with your leggings and your baby, and you’ve got your cute new mommy look! 🙂

They go with literally anything.

Edward Berthelot

I’m halfway through my second pregnancy and have spent an embarrassing amount of my salary on maternity leggings — but I have absolutely zero regrets because I haven’t taken them off since I got that positive test. When carrying my first daughter, I quickly learnt that maternity leggings are an absolute wardrobe essential. In fact, much to my husband’s chagrin, they’re pretty much all I wear right now.

As well as being versatile, they are one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing you can wear when pregnant — and they go with literally anything. Heading to a pre-natal yoga class? Team them with a sports bra and workout vest. Popping to the shops? Throw on a classic white T-shirt and trainers. Heading out for mocktails with your friends? Dress them up with an oversized blazer and stilettos. Yes, really.

And thanks to Covid and the quiet luxury trend that’s having a moment, leggings are now socially acceptable 24/7.

Maternity leggings will also serve you long after your baby arrives, making them a sustainable, investment purchase. If you’ve had a C-section and are feeling uncomfortable, there’s a plethora of specific leggings on offer that are designed with a stretchy fit and foldable flap to accommodate sore scars. If you’re breastfeeding and looking for a comfortable but practical ensemble, try paring them with a white shirt with a nursing bra underneath. As Lorna Jane Clarkson, founder of Lorna Jane activewear, explains: “I consider my activewear to be a metaphor for freedom and I wanted to give that same feeling to expectant and new mums.» Hear, hear.

What to look for in the best maternity leggings

You might be convinced that all black maternity leggings are equal but there are certain qualities you should look for when buying them to ensure they’re comfortable, practical and last you well into your fourth trimester.

As Chelsey Oliver, Chief Creative Officer at Seraphine, explains: «Investing in leggings that will retain their quality for the duration of your pregnancy and postpartum journey is so important, not only for your wardrobe and wallet, but also for the world the next generation will inherit.

«The key thing when it comes to leggings during your pregnancy and postpartum journey is finding soft, breathable fabrics that sculpt to your changing body (and don’t go saggy!). Whether you decide to go for over-bump or under-bump styles, they need to stay up and be comfortable all day long. Increased skin sensitivity is a common symptom for pregnant women, choosing super soft fabrics will really increase comfort levels.

“At Seraphine we offer a variety of super soft legging styles that cater to both maternity and postpartum , with styles that range from loungewear to activewear. Our selection of compression styles that offer support around the tummy area after baby arrives and our bamboo leggings are the perfect choice if you are looking for a super soft legging option post c-section.”

How we tested the best maternity leggings

Throughout both of our Website Director’s pregnancies, she shopped for a whole host of maternity leggings, from on-trend leggings with ankle split detail to maternity gym leggings and new-in leather look maternity leggings. She tried them out for sheerness (because there’s nothing worse than see-through leggings), comfort over her growing bump and style. She also continued wearing them beyond birth to see how they adapted.

Beautiful maternity leggings — compression, warm, winter, for summer, leather, cotton, sports

Fashion trendsetters for expectant mothers offer in the new season maternity leggings both insulated for winter and off-season, and light for summer. They are sewn not only from cotton, but also from high-quality modern elastic materials that do not squeeze the growing belly. Many models have a heel that allows the leg to be securely fastened to the leg.

How to choose maternity leggings?

Light and warm maternity leggings have long gone from home to everyday wear. The main condition for their choice, like any other things for women in an interesting position, is one hundred percent flexibility and high-quality fabrics, better than natural ones. Cotton products will be ideal in summer, and insulated leggings and maternity leggings on fleece from new high-tech, but hypoallergenic materials that combine wool, viscose and polyester in different proportions are perfect for winter.

Experts and doctors do not recommend the use of diving leggings, as this fabric is very dense and has pronounced slimming properties, which is absolutely not useful for a growing fetus. In order to look great, you can buy several pairs of different leggings, plain and multi-colored, and wear them with diverse clothes, especially since the retro fashion a la the end of the twentieth century has returned to the world podium.

Insulated maternity leggings

Stylish warm maternity leggings, thanks to the fleece lining, reliably protect from the cold. Suitable for any comfortable shoes from model shoes and winter boots to sports sneakers and sneakers, and uppers for all occasions, from sweaters to fur coats. Interesting solutions are sewn completely from fabric under the skin, or from natural, but soft leather and suede with an elastic belly. Products with leather inserts and fashionable patterns are popular, for example, jacquard, vertical contrasting stripes on the sides and others.

These pieces are perfect for both formal dress code and street style. What stylish options do fashion designers offer?

  1. Solid dark leggings with office sundresses, long blouses and jackets.
  2. Warm maternity leggings with oversized knitted voluminous sweaters, ensembles with a dark bottom and a bright top will be especially good.
  3. Knitted half-overs, sweatshirts, cardigans, vests with conditionally tight pants.
  4. Outfits consisting of a variety of dresses, tunics and blouses with leggings.
  5. Suits in one color or with identical prints.

Maternity leggings for summer

Original maternity leggings made of cotton go well with similar long T-shirts, light shirt dresses, cotton and natural silk, crepe de chine and chiffon. They are comfortable to wear not only because they do not float, but more because they support the stomach. This allows expectant mothers to feel comfortable and confident in any situation and create many interesting individual images, because summer is the time for experiments.

In the heat, light models are more welcome, and fashion items can be not only plain, but also printed. At the peak of popularity, leggings with floral and floral, especially tropical, patterns are returning predatory colors and imitation of reptile skin, abstraction, geometry, futuristic and ethnic ornaments. Under them, you can choose a top in pastels or bright colors, or a set of the same top and bottom, it all depends on personal preferences.

Maternity leather leggings

A real find that allows fashionistas to keep up with the times is skin-effect maternity leggings made of high-quality modern non-parky materials or products made of natural leather and suede, but with an elastic insert around the belly. A great alternative to returning hits — leather tight pants. They can be worn to the office, they will become a stylish addition to the respectable elegant casual bows, it is not without reason that this is the choice of world celebrities.

Compression leggings for pregnant women

Modern fashion industry has created compression leggings for pregnant women who care about their health and future baby. This miracle of innovative technologies is leggings with special inserts that apply pressure to the body in those places where it is needed, the maximum — at the ankles, the minimum — from the hips up. Their function also includes support for the abdominal area, which reduces the load on the back and lower back.

«Smart» tights for pregnant women are more comfortable than anti-varicose stockings and stockings, they allow a woman not to give up her usual way of life during the whole pregnancy. Since their inception, they have become indispensable for working women in position, athletes, professional dancers, ballerinas, those who love long journeys, prepare for moving, flights, and who, during gestation, have problems with swelling in the legs, veins and pain in different parts of the body.

Maternity fitness leggings

Who decided that pregnancy is a reason not to go to the gym? For this, sports leggings for pregnant women are intended. The best choice, according to experts, in this case will be cotton, knitted and compression leggings without insulated linings. To whom it is more convenient to do, those models are worth looking at for yourself. The main criterion here is the naturalness and hypoallergenic properties of fabrics in order to avoid skin irritation and other health problems.

Products with contrasting vertical stripes, patterned fabrics with a space theme, checks and stripes, floral and floral ornaments are in demand.
