Why kids love ‘fascist’ cartoons like ‘Paw Patrol’ and ‘Thomas’

Story highlights

«Thomas the Tank Engine» and «Paw Patrol» have been eviscerated by the press and on social media

Young brains seek out order, stability and even punishment in their entertainment

CNN
 —

Parents like to see themselves as purveyors of possibility. We want our children to inhabit a world in which identities are both mutable and equal, and imagination and empathy reign supreme!

But young children, as dictated by their tastes in popular culture, have something else in mind. They’re drawn to worlds in which identities are fixed, order trumps imagination and transgressions are met with routine punishment.

This clash between what parents desire for their children and what children desire for themselves is most easily observable in cartoon preferences. So often, the more parents dislike a show, the more their children love it.

Two of the most divisive shows are “Thomas the Tank Engine” and “Paw Patrol,” both of which have been eviscerated by grown-ups on discussion boards, in social media and in widely shared essays in prestigious publications.

“Thomas,” the long-running television franchise about a group of working trains chugging away on the Island of Sodor, has been called a “premodern corporate-totalitarian dystopia” in the New Yorker, imperialist and sinister in Slate, and classist, sexist and anti-environmentalist in the Guardian. And yet people – presumably parents – spend $1 billion on “Thomas” merchandise every year.

“Paw Patrol” is equally polarizing. The show, about a group of rescue dogs led by a boy named Ryder, is a regular source of complaint among parents and of adoration among their kids.

Buzzfeed called the show “terrible” and pointed to instances of gender and social inequality that go unchecked on the show. In the Guardian, Ryder is described as a megalomaniac with an implied “unstoppable God complex.” Nevertheless, “Paw Patrol” is ubiquitous. Branded merchandise featuring Ryder and the gang outsells most other television shows, according to recent data from the Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association. A recent Amazon search for “Paw Patrol” yielded 24,814 results.

It’s tempting as a parent – especially those of us who are aghast at contemporary politics – to be disturbed by the notion of our children tuning in for a regular dose of primary-colored authoritarianism. What ever happened to “Free to Be … You and Me?”

But, rage as we might, these shows are a source of comfort for our young children, whose id-driven brains seek out the order, stability and even punishment in their entertainment.

Despite their reputation of innocence, children are bubbling cauldrons of conflicting feelings and impulses. This is especially the case during toddler and preschool years, when they become aware of their capacity to do bad things and struggle with understanding those urges.

The neat moral order of shows like “Thomas” and “Paw Patrol” gives them a context for these feelings, explained Tovah Klein, director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development and author of “How Toddlers Thrive.” Good and bad are clearly articulated states in those shows, she said, and should one misbehave, the repercussions are clear and predictable.

“This is an age group that is constantly dealing with all these negative feelings in themselves. ‘Am I good?’ ‘Am I bad?’ They are trying to figure out what that means,” Klein said.

These shows also help children navigate their paradoxical relationship with power. On one hand, they desperately want some power. Watching the pups in “Paw Patrol” go on a mission or the trains in “Thomas” being useful allows them to feel as though they too have an important role to play.

On the other hand, children take comfort in the idea that someone is in charge. To them, Ryder isn’t a megalomaniac, and Sir Topham Hatt of “Thomas” isn’t a neocolonial autocrat. They’re just the guys delegating responsibilities to their eager inferiors. And the fact that these leaders, both white males, look like most figures in position of authority in the real world is not lost on children.

Screen violence — real and fictional — harmful for kids, experts say

“Children know there are a lot of scary things in the world, that there are a lot of bad things that can happen, and these shows make them feel like they could be part of fixing it,” Klein said. “But they know at some level that they can’t take care of things solely on their own, and being part of a team makes them feel safe.”

Among these cartoons’ many critics exists a subgroup of parents who are OK with some degree of autocracy and Manichean dualistic politics but just wish they would be presented with more nuance.

That’s not so easy, however, explained Yalda T. Uhls, a research scientist who studies children and media at the University of California, Los Angeles, and for the nonprofit Common Sense Media. “Rigidness and simplicity of narrative (in children’s television shows) is really important, because in the real world so much is going on. And young children aren’t really capable of abstract thought.”

Uhls said preschool-age children pay close attention to social cues and status, all in an attempt to figure out where they stand. The clearly articulated hierarchies in these cartoons confirm what they are struggling to understand in their own lives: mainly, that someone else, probably a parent or teacher, is in charge.

Parents concerned with the unsavory elements in shows like “Thomas” and “Paw Patrol” should talk to their children about them, but “don’t overthink it,” Uhls said.

“It takes a long time for a child to learn something from media and then apply it to their own life,” she said. For example, children won’t immediately take up bullying just because they saw it go unpunished on television.

Katherine DM Clover, a mother of a 2-year-old in Detroit who occasionally watches “Thomas,” struggles with whether she should use the same criteria to judge her child’s TV preferences as she does her own.

“I think there is a fine line that parents walk when it comes to media. Obviously, there are some things that are going to be totally off-limits and some things that are more in the ‘I don’t love it, but whatever’ territory. … ‘Thomas’ feels like a very difficult call. Is this harmful, or is it just not to my taste?”

She said that for now, she still lets him occasionally watch the show, because Thomas is “so close to the line. And as a socially conscious parent, there are so many things that are way over it.”

Sa’iyda Shabazz, who is based in Los Angeles, said she has no qualms letting her 4-year-old watch “Thomas,” which is “his favorite thing in the entire world.”

“I think it’s evolved a lot over the years, which is why I don’t really agree with the ‘fascist’ label,” she said. “I think the characters show empathy more, and friendship is a bigger theme. And not for nothing, they’re trains. Order and doing as you’re told is important to running a successful train line.”

Then there are the parents who are OK with the authoritarian elements in children’s media but wish the authorities didn’t always have to be white and male.

“I watched ‘Paw Patrol’ once with my daughter, and on that episode, Skye volunteered for a mission, but then Ryder picked two male pups,” said Rebekah Pajak, a mother of a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old in Chicago. Skye is the only female in the core team of six rescue pups on the show. “I remember thinking, ‘There’s a glass ceiling in this cartoon!’ “

Like many parents struggling with their children’s media choices, Pajak doesn’t want to get in the way of something her daughter enjoys – and she really enjoys “Paw Patrol.” But the concern about her daughter absorbing patriarchal messages lingers.

“I don’t want to think one cartoon is going to shape her, but if she sees 10 cartoons, then I do have a concern. It’s systemic. What is this all telling her collectively?”

    • Here’s an idea, gratis, for the creative team behind of “Paw Patrol” and “Thomas,” should they want to broaden their appeal to parents without alienating their fan base: Ryder and Sir Topham Hatt retire and are replaced by their equally domineering sisters. This, in turn, boosts the social status of all the non-male characters. Children would still get the satisfaction of immersing themselves in an orderly universe where rules are rules, and everyone is in his or her place. Just without the white guy on top.

50 clever cartoons for people who love books and reading

      Tips & more

Piotr Kowalczyk ⋮ Published on February 12, 2021

Just like books, these clever cartoons will help you reduce stress – and provide refreshing reasons to read even more books.

A 2009 study at the University of Sussex found that reading for just 6 minutes can reduce stress by up to 68%.

It turns out books can be a more efficient relaxation method than listening to music, meditating, or even taking a short walk.

What’s an even more efficient stress reliever? A good cartoon will make you laugh out loud, force stress to leave, and instantly improve your mood. One cartoon a day keeps the bad mood away, one would say.

Cartoons about books and libraries are exceptional because they don’t just entertain. They give book lovers the continuous flow of reasons why reading is important and why there is no such excuse as “I don’t have time for reading.”

Every time, when I check my Twitter timeline and come across a new cartoon by Tom Gauld or Grant Snider, I am laughing my head off, admiring the wisdom and creativity of my favorite cartoonists. And I end up switching from Twitter to my book reading app.

The Top 10 Love Triangles In Animated Shows

2021 was a great year for animation and even brought a few interesting romantic subplots to the forefront. Adding a little romance is one of the oldest tricks in fiction, but love triangles are a fun twist on a normal romance storyline that can spice things up and get fans rooting for their favorites.

Love triangles can be used for comedic effect or to intensify the plot. Often the best cartoon love triangles involve the protagonist, but there are a few fantastic ones with support characters as well. Regardless, each one adds a fun bit of excitement to the story.

      Danny/Sam/Valerie

Danny Phantom was one of the most beloved cartoons of the 2000s. The main trio of Danny, Sam, and Tucker made a fantastic and fun group of characters for kids to relate to.

Danny and Sam’s relationship developed throughout the course of the show to be romantic, but Sam had a few competitors throughout the series. Early on, it was Paulina, but part-time ghost hunter Valerie and Danny developed a bit of a romance partway through the series. This love triangle could have been expanded on a bit more, but it was intense while it lasted.

      Cyclops/Jean Grey/Wolverine

While they’re better known as one of the best comic book love triangles, this X-Men trio has had plenty of drama on television screens and silver screens too.

The trio have appeared in multiple iterations of X-Men cartoons, including X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men, and X-Men: Evolution. The actual romance between Wolverine and Jean varied depending on the versions, and thankfully it was completely eliminated in versions where Jean and Cyclops were portrayed as teens.

      Timmy/Trixie/Tootie

Butch Hartman cartoons always did a solid job at including funny portrayals of childhood crushes without making those crushes too big a part of the show.

The Fairly Oddparents featured two admittedly somewhat one-sided crushes: Timmy’s crush on Trixie and Tootie’s crush on Timmy. The two crushes rarely intersected in the plot, but both play an important role in Timmy’s adventures. He’d often make wild wishes or go out of his way to pursue Trixie and avoid Tootie.

      Finn/Bubblegum/Marceline

Adventure Time is an animated show with such a rich history and lore that it deserves an Adventure Time movie. For now, however, fans will have to make do with the original series and Obsidian.

The Bubblegum/Finn/Marceline love triangle had some intrusions from a few different characters, namely Flame Princess. The love triangle is hampered a bit by Finn and Bubblegum’s only real tw0-sided romantic elements taking place when Bubblegum is in her younger form. Once she goes back to normal, things become exclusively Bubblegum/Marceline centric.

      Duncan/Courtney/Gwen

Total Drama Island and the ensuing series in the Total Drama franchise had a fun cast of characters, but the originals had some of the best relationships out there.

Duncan and Courtney was the primary relationship in the triangle, with Duncan and Gwen being a frequent «will they or won’t they» question throughout the course of the series. The love triangle ends in a somewhat common way for love triangles to end: Gwen and Courtney as close friends with Duncan out of the equation for both of them.

      Diane/Peanutbutter/Bojack Horseman

Bojack Horseman is arguably one of the best cartoons of all time, and season 1 heavily revolves around the love triangle between the titular characters and his work associates: Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane.

The love triangle in the first season is relatively one-sided. Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane are in love and are engaged halfway through the season. On the other hand, Bojack quickly falls for Diana and eventually falls completely in love with her despite her lack of interest in him. Bojack’s actions have negative consequences throughout the series, and his feelings for Diane is part of that.

      Jimmy/Cindy/Nick

Jimmy Neutron follows the titular boy genius as well as his friends Carl and Sheen. Also among the main characters is Jimmy’s main academic rival and friend: Cindy.

Cindy and Jimmy begin the series as quarreling enemies and rivals, with Cindy having a crush on the stereotypical «popular cool kid» Nick. As the show goes on, Cindy’s feelings for Nick fade as it becomes fairly clear that she and Jimmy have a crush on one another. The series ends with Jimmy and Cindy holding hands.

      Ulrick/Yumi/William

Code Lyoko had a surprising amount of couples on the show, with Jeremy and Aelita being the most common couple and the central focus throughout the story.

William Dunbar was one of the best 2000s cartoon villains out there, but he also was a member of the Lyoko crew and one of Yumi’s main love interests. He constantly clashed with Ulrich, who had a crush on Yumi since season 1. Their feelings became more open later in the series, with Yumi thinking of William more platonically as the series progressed.

      Korra/Mako/Asami

It’s always interesting to see love triangles where the protagonist isn’t at the center of the action. Even more interesting is a complete love triangle, where all members had some romantic involvement.

Korra/Mako/Asami is one of the only true «complete» love triangles in popular fiction. Mako and Korra had plenty of «will they or won’t they» early in the series, with Mako initially serving as the center point of the triangle. Eventually, every member of the three had been romantically involved at some point, with Korra and Asami being the endgame couple.

      The Nowhere King/General/Woman

Centaurworld is a Netflix cartoon series featuring a world of «half-animal, half-man things.» Centaurworld has a likable cast of characters for the most part, but Woman and the Nowhere King do not belong on that list.

The Nowhere King began as a young Elktaur who thought he could never be with the woman he loved, so he split himself into a human and an elk. The human half married the princess while the Elk half grew resentful and became the monstrous Nowhere King. Unfortunately, neither got a happy ever after in the end.

      11 movies about cheating

When the love triangle stops being a cliché and becomes a marital status; when betrayal is no longer a terrible word, but something quite tangible and sore somewhere inside; when a husband and wife are no longer about love, but in a “lover” this root justifies itself — it’s good when betrayals occur only in films, and not in real life. A list of sad, funny (comedies were added so as not to hurt so much) and terrible pictures, where good and not so people let their passion off the leash and love not those whom they once swore to love.

Putting Perfect Strangers on such a thematic list is a spoiler. On the other hand, what do they want to find in a partner’s phone, especially if the unlock password has recently changed? In addition, the writers and actors tried to make sure that even the obvious theme of betrayal in the film made the audience surprised and shivered from bouts of Spanish shame.

      Love Actually (2003, UK)

      Genre: melodrama, comedy, drama
Director and screenwriter: Richard Curtis (Boyfrand from the Future)
      Rating: 6

This film is almost a utopia, in which there are as many as nine happy endings. And at the same time, there is no fabulousness and snottyness: all the characters and storylines are vital and painfully familiar.

Adultery here is only in one of the plots. The story of an unfaithful husband in fifteen minutes of total timing, divided into separate scenes, manages to bring the audience to catharsis without frankness, eroticism and radical tragedy. This is largely due to the sincerity of Emma Thompson: in one of the most powerful scenes, where the heroine realizes that her husband (Alan Rickman) is cheating on her, the actress really cried (re-shot 12 times), because a very similar episode was in her biography. Feelings in this story do not erupt like volcanoes, do not break the system, do not change characters — emotions do not go beyond the bedroom at all. As in real life, in Love Actually, adults do not throw tantrums and do not throw themselves from bridges: they are silent, smile at others and go to the school play to their youngest daughter. And inside everything aches, burns and shoots as if from a toothache.

The betrayal plot is heavy, but overall, the film is the perfect therapy for blues and disappointment in love.

You can also look at: Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Martina McCutchon, Keira Knightley, Laura Linney, Thomas Sangster, Martin Freeman and Rowan Atkinson

This film also contains several love stories, the characters of which are indirectly related to each other. And betrayal here, too, will be only in one of the storylines.

Ben (Bradley Cooper) and Anna (Scarlett Johansson) meet in a supermarket and a bunch of romantic platitudes immediately run between them. Ben is married, and at first it seems that the man will not give in to temptation and all sorts of sparks with strangers at the checkout, but soon the heroes collide again and now Ben has practically no chance. The anamnesis is also important: Ben married a school friend, he had only one woman, and plus Janine (Jennifer Connelly), Ben’s wife is a perfectionist all over. Janine suspects that her husband is lying to her, but doesn’t realize how much their relationship has already rotted in a dark corner of constant silence and lies. It’s not easy for Anna either: Ben is not used to deciding anything, he wants Janine to do everything for him, as always. Everyone suffers.

Also in the film will be: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Goodwin, Justin Long, Drew Barrymore, Kevin Connolly

The film is definitely not for those who are embarrassed by tricycle jokes: eroticism here is on the verge of Tinto Brass. At the same time, there is not a hint of lightness, fun and carelessness in the content — this is an uncomfortable, stuffy psychological film in which ethics was sent to a deep knockout.

The main character, Anna, a lawyer, lives her ideal Scandinavian life: a beautiful house in a beautiful place, a happy husband, happy children, a job to her liking and harmony in the family. Anna could have starred in social advertising for the high standard of living in Denmark, if the son of Peter, Anna’s husband, from her first marriage, had not come to her house from Sweden. Teenager Gustav is a problematic guy, and Anna tries to re-educate her stepson. Methods are questionable only. Getting closer to a difficult teenager, the woman begins to feel sexual attraction to Gustav. It is not difficult to guess that everything will end tragically, and one of the critics even called the finale «a Scandinavian ice thriller.»

The film won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

The film is about how four days can be happier and brighter than years and decades. Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep) is an Italian who immediately after the war married an American soldier, had two children and was stuck in the provinces. Perhaps a woman would have lived the life of an American housewife calmly, not peered into her own reflection in the mirror, trying to understand what was wrong. Perhaps Francesca could even become happy in old age, forgetting about youth, dreams, desires and the fact that life cannot be rewound and passed differently. But all this did not happen, because one day the car of photographer Robert (Clint Eastwood) stopped at Francesca’s house, and in four days with this man, Mrs. Johnson experienced more feelings and emotions than in many years before and after. But Francesca’s idol was probably Tatyana Larina: after ninety-six hours of dazzling happiness and passion, the heroine did not dare to jump into Robert’s car, leaving the luggage of a hateful life in the picturesque Madison County.

It is impossible to say that American Beauty is a movie about treason, because even serious professors and critics have not decided what this film is about. It’s about the American dream, about the preoccupation with material goods, about the global hypocrisy of the consumer society, about false dreams and priorities, about the difficulties of marriage and fatherhood. And as a result — about treason. A cult movie with cool visual metaphors and a whole bunch of evergreen themes for discussion.

Lester (Kevin Spacey) is in his 40s and is having a midlife crisis. I got the job, my wife got it, the daughter didn’t get it just because she stopped communicating with her father. New acquaintances help Lester to get out of this state: with Angela, the liberated friend of her daughter, and Ricky, the local version of Tyler Durden at the minimum. But no secret clubs: Lester will just be actively looking for his real self under the quagmire of familiar life.

The film won five Oscars: for Best Director and Screenplay, Cinematography, Best Actor and Best Picture.

Screen adaptation of Somerset Maugham’s novel (usually they read The Burden of Human Passions in his book).

Kitty did not marry for love, but in the 1920s this was no surprise. Her husband, microbiologist Walter, was too earthy, simple and boring for the aristocratic Kitty. But far from stupid: Walter quickly realizes that his wife is cheating on him, and instead of falling into hysterics, threatening, blackmailing and taking revenge, he offers his wife a decent deal: either Kitty’s lover divorces his wife and marries Kitty herself, or the traitor goes with Walter to a Chinese village to treat cholera patients.

This is not at all a children’s fairy tale and not a naive melodrama, but nobility, humility and suffering here also find their reward. True, you should not expect a happy ending — do they even exist in classical literature?

In this movie you can watch: Naomi Watts (King Kong, The Ring, The Impossible), Edward Norton (Fight Club), Liev Schreiber (Salt)

      Golden Globe for the soundtrack.
      7.1

A story fashioned from chance and selective tin. Something is happening on the screen all the time, and the audience has to be perplexed in the background like a gentleman for the entire duration in order to exhale in the finale and go through all the stages of verbs in o- and -et.

The surgeon Timoteo (Sergio Castellitto, aka the director) is stuck in the slums: the car has broken down, the local mechanic is out of reach, and Timoteo himself can only delve into living human entrails. The impoverished emigrant Italy (Penelope Cruz) comes to the aid of the hero, who lives in a house under demolition and life is derailed. Italy allows Timoteo to call his ideal girlfriend, and after a couple of unsuccessful attempts to get through, the hero goes to a local bar to wait for the car to be fixed. After a couple of glasses of vodka, Timoteo returns to Italy to call his girlfriend again, but this visit ends with rape. The gentle spectator is in shock, Timoteo too, and the poor girl seems so used to life’s slaps in the face that she doesn’t seem to feel anything at all. But the surgeon is not as hopeless as the fate of Italy. The man decides to apologize, goes back to the slums and helps Italy to bring bags with fragrant delay home. And then he rapes the girl again. This time, vodka cannot be justified, and shame burns the surgeon more, so the man nobly finishes off his victim and leaves money to Italy as a token of apology. Attempts to understand what is happening lead Timoteo not to a session with a psychotherapist and not to a police station with a confession, but to prostitutes who give the hero what he needs: an answer. It’s not about rough sex and unwillingness to change, Timoteo needs Italy. But also the perfect girlfriend. The hero drowns himself and his women deeper and deeper in sticky lies, and soon one of them will definitely suffocate.

This movie treats cheating like a boggart in Harry Potter: ridicules, trolls and banishes with irony. The plot is simple: a mistress and a deceived wife unite in order to take revenge on a man who also got a third mistress and managed to change everything. How many angles this Romkom figure has is not so important — the main thing is that justice triumphs in the end.

Everyone experiences betrayal in different ways, and this is always a personal tragedy unlike anything else, which should not be compared with someone else’s experience and pulled together with some average descriptions. But the motives of betrayal, especially in art, are often repeated. In Promise Doesn’t Mean Marry, a man decides to commit adultery because he got married too early and not of his own accord, but because public opinion and a bride with a steely character demanded it. In The Painted Veil, the situation is similar, but from the side of the female character. In Match Point and Don’t Go, love triangles and squares are shaped by obsession, the inability to say no to yourself, and the adrenaline rush of breaking a sacred taboo. In American Beauty, cheating is a way to escape from an existence on autopilot, break the circle of self-deception and feel like real people. Here, too, there will be a familiar motif — a meeting with first love.

In the family of the protagonist, everyone abandoned their dreams. Carlo, father, wanted to be a writer, but abandoned his novels and became a financier. His wife wanted to be an actress but works as a teacher. My daughter dreams of dancing in a TV show and so far she has not lost hope, but everyone around her is already drawing a waitress outfit in her mind. The son is unrequitedly in love, but unlike his sister, he immediately chose the look of a pessimist, so he did not try too hard and decided to enter into a relationship with marijuana. In the house of this family, adherents of positive psychology immediately feel suffocation attacks. But everything changes when Carlo meets his first love. Alyssia (Monica Bellucci) is not only a way to escape from life’s swamp, but also a reminder that once Carlo still knew how to dream and believed in himself. Here it is the recognizable motive of betrayal — to roll back to a previous, more successful version of oneself.

      Walt Disney, early 1910s

Walt Disney was obsessed with death. So, at least, his biographers often say, tying the numerous — and tragic — deaths of animals in Disney films to a traumatic episode from the childhood of Disney himself. At the end of 19In the 00s, when Walt was either seven or eight years old, he killed an owl. Suffering in the Missouri wilderness from the loneliness and beatings of his father, Walt dreamed of a pet, and the dream almost came true when one afternoon in the dark thickets of the garden he found a half-sleeping owl and dragged her home. The daylight-mad bird suddenly attacked Walt, and he, either frightened or angry, trampled the owl to death. The event was a turning point in Walt’s life: «It seems that after that owl, a tenderness for animals arose in me.» Tenderness, which later managed to monetize.

Most American cartoons of the early 20th century were crude and more adult-oriented—even Mickey Mouse looked like a rather aggressive and snarky mouse at first. It was Disney — to the dismay of his financial partners — who decided to add sentimentality and tragedy to the animation. So death or the threat of death became the plot driver in most of his early cartoons, and then turned into a mandatory climactic episode, against which the happy ending looked even more spectacular. Bambi’s mother, Natsy the street dog from Lady and the Tramp, the curious oysters from Alice in Wonderland, and even the dumb dinosaur from Fantasia all died to the indignation of parents who feared too much realism, and the grief of children who adored anthropomorphic animals and provided for Disney multi-million dollar income even during the Great Depression. The bet on childish sensibility worked and became a must-have for all The Walt Disney Studios productions, including wildlife documentaries. For example, the director of the film «White Wasteland» (1958) about the polar fauna of Canada, for three years it was not possible to film a sufficiently dramatic death scene, so he himself staged the mass suicide of lemmings, which were brought to the shooting and deliberately thrown from the mountain.

Walt Disney and the Red Cross car painted by him on World War I, 1919 Photo: The Walt Disney Archives Photo Library

Walt Disney managed to cash in on both world wars. 16-year-old Walt, unable to endure his cruel father any longer, fled to World War I at 1918, having forged the date on the birth certificate, and ended up in France in the sanitary unit. Together with his colleague, he brought German helmets from the front line and sold them as souvenirs to American soldiers returning to their homeland. Bullet-pierced helmets of German snipers were best, but they were rare, and here Disney’s artistic talent manifested itself. Together with an accomplice, they collected ordinary German helmets, applied a special camouflage pattern to them, which was only on sniper helmets, made a hole like a bullet, and, for greater persuasiveness, smeared them with blood. It seems that World War I left pleasant memories for Disney: when during World War II one of his employees announced that he was going to fight in Europe, Disney said that he would have dreamed of going instead of him.

However, even after staying in the US, he was again able to make good money. Moreover, some researchers believe that the war saved the studio, which was on the verge of bankruptcy due to inadequate spending by its founder on cartoons that did not pay off at the box office. After the US entered the war in 1941, the US government needed propaganda and educational films to raise patriotic spirit and mobilize the population. Their main supplier was the Disney studio. During the war, the studio produced cartoons commissioned by all state and military institutions — from the Navy to the Treasury Department, and the US Air Force in honor of the cartoon «Victory through air power» (1943) even called the new rocket booster aerial bomb the «Disney Bomb». But Donald Duck showed himself best of all on the ideological front. In The Spirit of ’43 he explained to Americans the importance of saving money in order to pay taxes on time that would support the war for democracy, in Commando Duck he destroyed an entire Japanese airfield, and in The Fuhrer’s Face he worked 48 hours a day on a Nazi ammunition factory. At the end of the cartoon, Donald woke up from a nightmare and announced that he was most proud of his American origin — for which, apparently, he received an Oscar at 1943 years.

      Disney studio strike, 1941

Walt Disney considered himself a genius and a visionary. Studio staff considered him a tyrant. And, no matter how hard Disney tried to present his studio as a happy family, it was clear that there were problems in the family: on the one hand, he really wanted the employees to call him at home “Walt”, on the other hand, when it turned out that many of them can’t get used to being called by their first names, he just started threatening to get fired for saying «boss». At first, all this looked somewhat even charming eccentricity, but while working on the first feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, totalitarian manners grew into banal exploitation.

The idea of making a full-length cartoon in the mid-1930s seemed wild even to the studio management: everyone was sure that the audience would not endure an hour and a half of animation. Walt thought differently and forced everyone to get involved in an enterprise that took three years and a record $ 1.5 million. There was no question of a family atmosphere: Disney made them redraw characters a hundred times so that sometimes for one drawing of Snow White close-ups artists left all day. The matter was complicated by the fact that by this time Disney himself had no longer made sketches, and he showed the characters literally on his fingers. It is not surprising that for the most part they did not suit him in the painted form: the beautiful prince was too comic, the queen was too unpleasant, and the dwarves reminded him of a “bunch of nigers”. Constant redrawing forced the employees of the technical department — phasers and contourers who transferred the drawings to film — to work for days on end, due to which many of them lost their sight. Needless to say, these employees were paid about 100 times less than Disney’s — only $12 a week. However, Disney promised that he would distribute bonuses to everyone involved in Snow White if the cartoon was successful.

Snow White did not disappoint: it was the highest-grossing sound film of the time. Disney was announced as the creator of a new film genre, but he did not keep his promise and instead of paying bonuses for overtime, he spent money from Snow White to build a new giant studio, where he no longer tried to instill a family spirit and set up production in the best traditions of totalitarian dystopias. Employees were divided by gender and specialization, women were forbidden to communicate with men, and animators with phasers and contourers were threatened with dismissal. In addition, employees were prohibited from joining trade unions, including the newly formed Cartoonists’ Guild. It is not surprising that the case ended in a strike: at 19In 1941 they demanded that the Guild be recognized and that its provisions be observed. In the five weeks of the strike that jeopardized the creation of Dumbo, Disney went out to the employees once and told them to «better clean up your house and stop grumbling. » It is not known how it would have ended if the studio management had not persuaded Disney to go on vacation to South America and, in his absence, had not signed an agreement with the trade union.

Walt Disney, early 1930s Photo: The Walt Disney Company

Walt Disney was not an outstanding draftsman. Almost all of his famous characters were created by animators he hired. Even Mickey Mouse, the greatest mouse in history, the favorite hero of Benito Mussolini and Franklin Roosevelt, was not actually created by him, but by Ub Iverks, the chief animator of his studio. And that was the problem. Steamboat Willie, the debut of Mickey Mouse and the first sound cartoon in history, was so popular that audiences refused to watch the movies it came with and asked to play it a second and third time. All the glory went to Disney, and he did not even try to convince anyone. Disney did voice Mickey Mouse, but he couldn’t draw him. It got ridiculous: once, at 1930, at some party, a child asked Disney to draw Mickey Mouse for him, and he secretly handed over the task to Iverks, who was at the same party, so that later he could simply sign it. It is believed that for Iverks, who for many years was condescending about Disney’s vanity, this was the last straw: he invited Disney to draw his own mouse and left the studio. The case made an unpleasant impression on Disney, and after the departure of Iwerks, he introduced a new rule: only the name of the company, that is, only the name of Disney, is mentioned first before the beginning of the film, and only then — the names of several artists. Many names were not mentioned at all.

New animators who came to the studio were warned that all cartoons had the same author, and his name was Disney. Many employees resigned themselves, but with the advent of the era of feature-length cartoons, the company’s policy began to seem more and more dishonest to them. The dissatisfaction culminated in a mass layoff: in the early 40s, David Hilberman, Art Babbitt, John Hubley and several other animators who invented Snow White, Pinocchio and Bambi left the studio, saying that cartoons were created not by Disney, but by hundreds of employees. The case smelled of scandal and exposure, and then Disney played ahead of the curve, declaring that the communists were to blame: they were supposedly trying to seize the government and recruited part of its employees, and drugged the other part. It is difficult to say whether Disney himself believed in this story or tried to save face, but he did not back down from his words and even spoke before a commission to investigate un-American activities. Most unlucky was David Hilberman, whose ties to the communists Disney spoke without a shadow of a doubt: “I checked his card — his religion is not indicated there, but it is indicated that he studied at the Moscow Art Theater.” Hilberman had to leave for Europe, and Disney was left alone to rule in his studio.

Walt Disney joked that he preferred Mickey Mouse to all women in the world. The animator Ward Kimball, who invented Jiminy the cricket from Pinocchio and the cat Lucifer from Cinderella, said jokingly: «Disney didn’t believe in women and cats. » After several losses at the Oscars, Disney stopped taking his wife Lillian with him to the ceremony, because he was sure that she, like any woman, could jinx him. He forbade his daughters to watch his cartoons, fearing that they would not laugh loudly enough.

At the most crucial moment, they can become pregnant and quit, jeopardizing the entire project. In addition, according to Disney, this specialty required a sense of humor and the ability to draw, and neither the first nor the second is characteristic of women. Before the war, the only place in the studio where women were accepted was the technical department, whose employees transferred drawings to film. But with the entry of the United States into World War II and the start of mobilization, the number of employees dropped sharply, and Disney had to hire several women — but even then only married, with children and as assistants.

      A History of Menstruation, 1946

Distrust of women and the treatment of women as a separate biological species was manifested not only in labor discrimination: few things contributed to the support of gender stereotypes like Disney cartoons, which proclaimed the best lot for a woman to be saved by a man and become his wife, that is, to continue his family. However, in the feature cartoons about the birth of children was not mentioned due to censorship, but in the educational short films that the studio released, it was directly announced that the function of a woman is to cook, clean, look good, but first of all, give birth to children. Made in the mid-1940s by order of pharmaceutical companies and government agencies, cartoons like “Baby Care” and “The History of Menstruation”, in which the word “vagina” was uttered for the first time in the cinema, reduced a woman’s life to two events — the birth and the birth of a child. However, conservative American society clearly did not see this as a problem: A History of Menstruation was shown in schools until the late 60s, and in 2015 it was included in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for «cultural, historical and aesthetic value.»

The first high-profile Hollywood scandal on racial grounds was made by Walt Disney. More specifically, outraged viewers of his Song of the South (1946), one of the first live-action films with animated inserts, set in post-Civil War Georgia, starring merry ex-slave Uncle Remus, white children, and cartoon brother Rabbit. The film was based on the collection of African American folklore Uncle Remus’ Tales (1880), which Disney was very fond of, although he had long been criticized for maintaining stereotypes about the black population. Disney and its producers understood that the material was controversial and even risky, and hired two writers to work — southerner Dalton Raymond and leftist Maurice Rapf, who were supposed to «strike a balance between black haters and black lovers.» Disney himself was equally indifferent to the aspirations of both the segregationists and the fighters for equality. However, after the victory in World War II, the idea of racial equality was in vogue in the United States, and Disney was always attentive to the current agenda. Not because he wanted to influence her, but rather to use it. One of the most influential African Americans of the time, Harvard professor Alain Leroy Locke, whom Disney turned to for advice, argued that the studio could fundamentally change the mass attitude towards African Americans if we abandon scenes like the one where the former slave sings songs against the backdrop of an idyllic plantation landscape. But Disney did not want to change anything, he wanted to be liked, and his instinct told him not to get involved in politics and be closer to the spirit of the original.

Of course there was a scandal. Even before the premiere, African-American newspapers warned that Disney idealized the slave system and supported racial stereotypes, and called for a boycott of the film. Realizing that he could not achieve the location of the «lovers of blacks», Disney made a bet on the «haters of blacks» and moved the premiere of the film to Atlanta. Segregation laws were still in effect in Atlanta, so Uncle Remus himself could not attend the premiere — the black actor James Baskett was not even allowed to rent a hotel room. But there were no protesters at the cinemas either.

Although critics slammed the «mediocre» and «totally cliché» tale of the mythical American South, in which blacks, whites and toons dance in the same dance, financially Disney’s flair did not fail. Song of the South was the studio’s first film in a long time to break even at the box office, and even won an Oscar for best song. The film academy also noted the lead actor, awarding him not an acting, but an honorary «Oscar» «for the skill and warmth with which he portrayed the friend of all children, Uncle Remus.»

In the end, Walt Disney got tired of cartoons. More precisely, it became crowded in the studio. With age, the control-obsessed Disney found it increasingly difficult to put up with the inability to subdue the striking workers, and in the early 50s he abandoned animation to finally start building his own — ideal — world.

The first experiment was Disneyland. open at 19In 1955, the family-friendly park embodied the ideal of puritanical America, giving it Disney’s trademark sugary-naive spirit. Everything that other amusement parks were famous for was banned here: alcohol, dangerous rides and freak shows. And although journalists ridiculed the sterile paths, the same employees and the glossy grooming of the new park, the influx of visitors convinced Disney of the success of the enterprise. In the early 60s, he already took up the development of an entire city.

Walt Disney at the opening of the first Disneyland, July 17, 1955 Photo: AP

The «Experimental Prototype Community of the Future» was to be located in an area twice the size of Manhattan, in the form of a circle, in the center of which would be commercial enterprises, and on the outskirts — residential buildings, an underground freeway and ground transportation in the form of a monorail with unmanned trains. Scientists and inventors from all over America could test their inventions there, residents — from 20 to 100,000, according to Disney’s forecasts — would stay in rented apartments for up to a year, after which they would be replaced by new ones. The key feature of the Disney city was to be the absence of elections and the unlimited power of Disney himself. Amazingly, the government of Florida agreed to legitimize the authoritarian system: for the sake of Disney at the end of 19In 65, it struck out from its jurisdiction the area under the city of Orlando.

Sketch for the «Experimental Prototype of the Community of the Future», 1965

It is hard to say what would have come of this enterprise, but it did not come to construction — in 1966, Disney died of lung cancer. They say, already knowing his diagnosis and the disappointing prognosis of doctors, Disney even then tried to defeat entropy with the help of order and progress and almost agreed with the American Cryonics Society to freeze his body and save it until scientists figure out how to reanimate it. But he did not have time: on December 15, he died without making this clause in his will, and his body was cremated. The project of an ideal city was abandoned, having built another Disneyland in its place, but otherwise Disney would be pleased with the heirs: having bought almost all competitors by now, his company is closer than ever to unlimited power.

Princess Diana — biography, photo, personal life, husband and children, causes of death

      Biography of Princess Diana

Diana Spencer is one of the most famous women of the twentieth century, whose tragic fate left a mark on the hearts of her contemporaries. Having become the wife of the heir to the royal throne, she faced betrayal and betrayal and was not afraid to expose the hypocrisy and cruelty of the British monarchy to the world.

      Pictured: Princess Diana

The tragic death of Diana was perceived by many as a personal tragedy, a huge number of books, films and musical works are dedicated to her. Why Princess Diana was so popular among the common people, we will try to understand this material.

      Childhood and family

Diana Francis Spencer is a representative of an old aristocratic dynasty, the founders of which were the descendants of Kings Charles II and James II. The Duke of Marlborough, Winston Churchill and many other famous Englishmen belonged to her noble family. Her father, John Spencer, held the title of Viscount Eltrop. The mother of the future princess, Frances Ruth (née Roche), was also of noble birth — her father was a baron, and her mother was a confidant and maid of honor of Queen Elizabeth.

      Young parents of Princess Diana

Diana became the third girl in the Spencer family, she has two older sisters — Sarah (1955) and Jane (1957). A year before her birth, a tragedy occurred in the family — a boy born on January 12, 1960 died ten hours after birth. This event seriously affected the already less than ideal relationship between the parents, and the birth of Diana could no longer correct this situation. In May 1964, the long-awaited heir Charles was born to the Spencer couple, but their marriage was already bursting at the seams, his father spent all his time hunting and playing cricket, and his mother got a lover.

      Diana Spencer in childhood

Diana from early childhood felt like an unnecessary and unloved child, deprived of attention and love. Neither mother nor father ever said simple words to her: «We love you.» The divorce of her parents was a shock for an eight-year-old girl, her heart was torn between her father and mother, who no longer wanted to live as one family. Francis left the children to her husband and left with her new chosen one for Scotland, the next meeting of Diana with her mother took place only at the wedding ceremony with Prince Charles.

Diana and her younger brother Charles Spencer

In early childhood, Diana was brought up and educated by governesses and home teachers. In 1968, the girl was sent to the prestigious West Hill Private School, where her older sisters were already studying. Diana loved to dance, drew beautifully, went in for swimming, but the rest of the subjects were given to her with difficulty. She failed her final exams and was left without a matriculation certificate. School failures were due more to lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem than to low intellectual ability.

      Diana Spencer Family

In 1975, John Spencer inherited the title of earl from his deceased father, and a year later he married Raine, Countess of Dartmouth. The children disliked their stepmother, boycotted her and refused to sit at the same table. Only after the death of her father in 1992, Diana changed her attitude towards this woman and began to warmly communicate with her.

In 1977, the future princess went to Switzerland to continue her education. Homesickness forced her to return without graduating from an educational institution. The girl moved to London and got a job.

      Princess Diana in her youth

In English aristocratic families, it is customary for grown-up children to work on an equal footing with ordinary citizens, so Diana, despite her noble birth, worked as a teacher in the Young England kindergarten, which still exists in the respectable London district of Pimlico and is proud of its connection with the royal family .

Diana worked as a kindergarten teacher

She lived in a small apartment given to her by her father as an adult, and led the usual way of life for English youth. At the same time, she was a modest and well-mannered girl, shunned noisy London parties with marijuana and alcohol, and did not start serious novels.

      Meet Prince Charles

Diana’s first meeting with Prince Charles took place in 1977 at the Spencer family estate in Althorp. The heir to the British crown then met with her older sister Sarah, the girl was even invited to the palace, which indicated serious plans for her. However, Sarah did not burn with the desire to become a princess, she did not hide her passion for alcohol, because of which she was expelled from school, and hinted at infertility.

As a young man, Prince Charles was infatuated with Diana’s older sister, Sarah

The queen was not satisfied with this state of affairs, and she began to consider Diana as a possible bride for her son. And Sarah happily married a calm, reliable man with a wonderful sense of humor, bore him three children and lived a happy family life.

The queen’s desire to marry her son as soon as possible was caused by his relationship with Camilla Shand, a smart, energetic and sexy blonde, but not well-born enough to become heir to the throne. And Charles liked such women: experienced, sophisticated and ready to carry him in their arms. Camilla was also not averse to becoming a member of the royal family, however, as a smart woman, she had a fallback in the person of officer Andrew Parker-Bowles. But the heart of Andrew for a long time was occupied by Princess Anna, Charles’s sister.

Camilla Shand, mistress of Prince Charles

The marriage of Camilla and Bowles became a solution to two problems for the royal family at once — at that time Charles served in the Navy, and when he returned, he met his beloved already in the status of a married lady. This did not prevent them from continuing their love relationship, which did not stop with the advent of Lady Diana in the life of Prince. Looking ahead, we add that eight years after the death of Lady Spencer, the prince married Camilla.

      Camille and Bowles’ wedding

Diana, on the other hand, was a modest pretty girl without a train of scandals and with an excellent pedigree — an excellent match for the future heir to the throne. The queen persistently suggested that her son pay attention to her, and Camilla was not against the marriage of her lover to a young, inexperienced lady who did not pose any threat to her. Submitting to the will of his mother and realizing his duty to the dynasty, the prince invited Diana, first to the royal yacht, and then to the palace, where, in the presence of members of the royal family, he proposed to her.

Young Prince Charles and Princess Diana

The official announcement of the engagement took place on February 24, 1981. Lady Dee showed the public a luxurious sapphire and diamond ring, which now adorns the finger of Kate Middleton, the wife of her eldest son.

      Diana and Charles’ wedding

After the engagement, Diana left her job as a teacher and moved first to the royal residence in Westminster, and then to Buckingham Palace. It was an unpleasant surprise for her that the prince lived in separate apartments, continued to lead his usual way of life and rarely spoiled the bride with attention.

      Princess Diana’s wedding dress

The coldness and aloofness of the royal family negatively affected Diana’s psyche, childhood fears and insecurities returned to her, and bulimia attacks became more frequent. Before the wedding, the girl lost 12 kilograms, her wedding dress had to be sutured several times. She felt like a stranger in the royal palace, it was difficult for her to get used to the new rules, and the environment seemed cold and hostile.

      Wedding of Diana and Charles

29July 1981, a magnificent wedding ceremony took place, which was seen on television screens by about a million people. Another 600,000 spectators greeted the wedding procession on the streets of London, all the way to St. Paul’s Cathedral. On that day, the territory of Westminster Abbey barely accommodated everyone who wanted to take part in this historic event.

      Wedding of Princess Diana. Chronicles

There were some incidents — a luxurious taffeta dress was badly wrinkled during a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and did not look the best. In addition, the bride, during the traditional speech at the altar, mixed up the order of the names of Prince Charles, which violated etiquette, and also did not swear to her future husband in eternal obedience. The royal press attachés pretended it was meant to be, permanently changing the text of the wedding vow for members of the British court.

Birth of heirs and problems in family life

After a solemn reception at Buckingham Palace, the newlyweds retired to the Broadlands estate, from where a few days later they went on a wedding cruise in the Mediterranean. When they returned, they settled at Kensington Palace in west London. The prince returned to his usual way of life, and Diana began to expect the appearance of her first child.

      Pregnant Princess Diana

The Princess of Wales’ pregnancy was officially announced on November 5, 1981, this news caused rejoicing in English society, people were eager to see the heir to the royal dynasty.

Diana spent most of her pregnancy in the palace, gloomy and deserted. She was surrounded only by doctors and servants, her husband rarely went into her chambers, and the princess suspected something was wrong. She soon found out about his ongoing relationship with Camilla, which Charles did not even try to hide very much. The betrayal of her husband oppressed the princess, she suffered from jealousy and self-doubt, was almost always sad and depressed.

Diana met Camilla before marriage (1980)

The birth of the first-born William (06/21/1982) and the second son Harry (09/15/1984) did not change anything in their relationship. Charles still sought comfort in the arms of his mistress, and Lady Di shed bitter tears, suffered from depression and bulimia, and drank handfuls of sedative pills.

Two sons did not change Charles’ attitude towards his wife

The intimate life of the spouses practically came to naught, and the princess had no choice but to find herself another man. They became Captain James Hewitt, a former military man, courageous and sexy. In order to have a reason to see him without arousing suspicion, Diana began to take riding lessons.

Princess Diana and James Hewitt, her lover

James gave her what a woman could not get from her own husband — love, care and the joy of physical intimacy. Their romance lasted nine years, it became known in 1992 from the book Diana: Her True Story by Andrew Morton. Around the same time, records of intimate conversations between Charles and Camilla were made public, which inevitably led to a scandal in the royal family.

      Diana and Charles Divorce

The reputation of the British monarchy was under serious threat, protest moods were ripening in society, and it was necessary to urgently solve this problem. The situation was aggravated by the fact that Diana, in a little over ten years, became the darling of not only the British people, but also the world community, so many stood up for her and accused Charles of misbehavior.

At first, Diana’s popularity played into the hands of the royal court. She was called the «queen of hearts», «the sun of Britain» and «the people’s princess» and put on a par with Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor and other great women of the twentieth century.

Princess Diana and her sons at the amusement park (1994)

But over time, this universal love finally destroyed the marriage of Charles and Diana — the prince became jealous of his wife for her fame, and Lady Di, feeling the support of millions, began to boldly and confidently declare her rights. She decided to demonstrate to the whole world evidence of her husband’s infidelities, told her story on a tape recorder and handed over the recordings to the press.

      Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth

After that, Queen Elizabeth disliked Princess Diana, but the royal family could not stay away from the scandal, and on December 9, 1992, Prime Minister John Major officially announced the decision of Diana and Charles to live separately.

1999: Charles and Camilla go out together for the first time since Diana’s death

In November 1995, Lady Dee gave the BBC a sensational interview in which she spoke in detail about her suffering caused by her husband’s infidelities, palace intrigues and other unworthy acts of members of the royal family.

      Princess Diana Candid Interview (1995)

Charles responded by portraying her as a psychopath and hysterical and demanded an official divorce. The queen supported her son, appointed her former daughter-in-law a generous allowance, but deprived her of the title of Your Royal Highness. On August 28, 1996, the divorce proceedings were completed, and Diana again became a free woman.

Diana filed for divorce in 1996

      Last years of life

After her divorce from Charles, Lady Dee tried to arrange her personal life again in order to finally find female happiness. By that time, she had already parted with James Hewitt, suspecting him of hypocrisy and greed.

Diana really wanted to believe that men love her not only for her title, but also for her personal qualities, and Pakistani cardiac surgeon Hasnat Khan seemed to be such a person. She fell in love with him without looking back, met his parents and even covered her head as a sign of respect for Muslim traditions.

      Hasnat Khan

It seemed to her that it was in the Islamic world that a woman is protected and surrounded by love and care, and this was exactly what she was looking for all her life. However, Dr. Khan understood that next to such a woman he would always be forced to remain on the sidelines, and was in no hurry with a marriage proposal.

In the summer of 1997, Diana accepted an invitation from Egyptian billionaire Mohammed al-Fayed to relax on his yacht. An influential businessman, the owner of luxury real estate in London, wanted to get to know such a popular person better.

Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed

So that Diana would not be bored, he invited his son, film producer Dodi al-Fayed, to the yacht. Lady Dee at first considered this trip as a way to arouse jealousy in Dr. Khan, but she herself did not notice how she fell in love with the charming and courteous Dodi.

The tragic death of Princess Diana

On August 31, 1997, Lady Dee and her new lover died in a fatal accident in the center of Paris. Their car crashed into one of the pillars of the underground tunnel at breakneck speed, Dodi and driver Henri Paul died on the spot, and the princess died two hours later at the Salpêtrière clinic.

Photos from the scene of the death of Princess Diana

In the blood of the driver, they found an alcohol content several times higher than the permissible norm, in addition, the car was moving at great speed, trying to break away from the paparazzi chasing him.

The passengers had no chance of surviving

The death of Diana was a huge shock to the world community and caused a lot of rumors and speculation. Many blamed the royal family for the death of the princess, believing that the British intelligence services set up this accident. Information appeared in the press that a man on a motorcycle blinded the driver with a laser in order to avoid Diana’s pregnancy from a Muslim and the subsequent scandal. However, all this is from the field of conspiracy theories.

      Funeral of Princess Diana

All of England mourned the death of the «People’s Princess», because before that, not a single person of royal blood had been so loved by the common people. Under pressure from the public, Elizabeth was forced to interrupt her vacation in Scotland and give her former daughter-in-law the necessary honors.

People bring flowers to Kensington Palace

The funeral ceremony was organized on a royal scale, one and a half million Londoners took to the streets to accompany the funeral procession. It was especially unbearable to see the grief-stricken Harry and William walking behind the coffin of their mother. Royal family friend Elton John performed his hit «Candle in the Wind» by transcribing the lyrics for the princess’s funeral.

Diana was buried on September 6, 1997 at the Spencer family estate in Althorp, Northamptonshire. Her grave is hidden from prying eyes on a secluded island in the middle of the lake, access to it is limited. Those wishing to honor the memory of the «People’s Princess» can visit the memorial located near the burial place.

      Causes of popular love

Princess Diana enjoyed the support of the British, not only because she gave birth to two heirs and dared to publicize the vices of the crown prince. In many ways, this is the result of her charitable work.

For example, Diana was one of the first famous people to talk about the problem of AIDS. The disease was discovered in the early 80s, and even ten years later, little was known about the virus and how it spread. Not all doctors dared to contact those infected with HIV, fearing to catch a deadly disease.

But Diana was not afraid. She visited AIDS treatment centers without a mask and gloves, shook hands with the sick, sat on their bed, asked about their families, hugged and kissed. “HIV does not turn people into danger. You can shake hands with them and hug them, because only God knows how much they need it, ”the princess called.

Princess Diana communicates with an AIDS patient

Traveling around third world countries, Diana communicated with patients with leprosy: “When I met them, I always tried to touch them, hug them, to show that they are not outcasts, not outcasts.”

Princess Diana in the leper colony

Having visited Angola in 1997 (there was a civil war going on there at that time), Diana walked through a field that had just been cleared of mines. No one guaranteed complete security — the likelihood that mines remained in the ground was very high. Returning to Britain, Diana launched an anti-mine campaign, urging the army to abandon this type of weapon. “Angola has the highest percentage of amputees. Think about it: one out of 333 Angolans lost a limb to mines.”

      During a visit to Angola

During her lifetime, Diana did not achieve «deminization», but her son, Prince Harry, continues her work. He is a patron of The HALO Trust, a charitable organization whose goal is to free the world from mines by 2025, that is, to neutralize all old shells and stop the production of new ones. Volunteers cleared mines in Chechnya, Kosovo, Abkhazia, Ukraine, Angola, Afghanistan.

Princess Diana walks through a minefield

In her native London, the princess regularly visited centers for the homeless and took Harry and William with her so that they could see the other side of life with their own eyes and learn compassion. Later, Prince William claimed that these visits were a revelation for him and he is grateful to his mother for this opportunity. After Diana’s death, he became a patron of the charities she had previously supported.

Lady Spencer taught her sons mercy for the disadvantaged

At least three times a week, she went to children’s hospices, where they kept children dying from oncology. Diana spent at least four hours with them. “Some will survive, others will die, but as long as they are alive, they need love. And I will love them,” said the princess.

Diana at the opening of the children’s hospice

Diana changed the face of the British monarchy. If earlier they were associated with ordinary people with yet another suffocating measures like tax increases, then after her actions, as well as an interview with BBC 1995 (“I would like the monarchs to have more contact with the people”), the monarchy has become a protector of the disadvantaged. After the tragic death of Lady Dee, her mission continued.
