What Is the Origin of the Name Jayden?

Jayden is likely a modern creation that combines popular names from the mid-to-late 1900s (1). Jayden probably came from a combination of the name Jason, popular in the 1970s, with names like Braden or Hayden.

While some attribute the meaning of the biblical name Jadon to the name Jayden, it is likely not the source of this particular name.

Jadon was first seen in the U.S. census in 1858, the name Jayden not being listed by the Social Security Administration until 1977 (meaning that 1977 was the first year five or more babies named Jayden). This more or less supports the theory that Jayden is a modern creation.

How Popular Is the Name Jayden?

The name was very obscure until the 1990s. Jayden made its first appearance on the Social Security Administration’s top 1000 baby names in 1994 at number 850 (2). Jayden gained traction at the end of the 1990s and entered the 2000s at spot 194. The name has been very popular in the last two decades and was even in the top ten baby boy names from 2009 to 2013.

In 2021 the name remained popular, sitting comfortably at spot 41.

    How Do I Pronounce Jayden?

Jayden is pronounced, “JAY-den.” Since it is most likely a hybridization of two names, Jayden takes on the pronunciations from those names rather than the Hebrew name Jadon.

Is Jayden a Boy or Girl Name?

According to the Social Security Administration, Jayden has been more popular as a boy name. However, the name is not uncommon for a girl name.

From 1998 to 2018, Jayden was in the top 1000 girls’ names. The name peaked in 2007 and 2008, making it into the 170s. Since 2008, though, the name faded out of popularity—dropping out of the top 1000 after 2018.

Regardless, Jayden is a gender-neutral name.

    Variations of Jayden

The name Jayden has many variations. Most variations may have come from modern naming trends of altering the spelling. The origin of Jayden may be a reason why there are many variants as well, given that the name hybridized desirable sounds from other names.

I am glad to be here now, it is a great honor for me to stand here in front of you, and also to share God’s Word with the children. I love small children very much. These little kids, so cute and so brave, because they agreed to go on stage. I wanted to tell you something about the method called «three questions». There is a football team in our town in North Carolina who call themselves the Three Questions because they study the Bible together in this way. When I was in the eighth grade, my mother, Ann Gramm Lotz, invited all my friends from school to come home. And we analyzed different passages from the Bible using the method of three questions.

Since then I have been using it constantly. I love him very much, because through this method you can communicate one on one with Jesus, without any intermediaries. As I reviewed the various passages, God spoke to me in a variety of ways. When I was faced with the choice of making important decisions, the answer from the Lord came to me when I read the Word using this «three questions» method. And now I can use it when working with children. My mother already mentioned in her sermon that today it seems that this generation is lost. I myself have three little daughters who are 10 years old, 9years old and the youngest is 5 years old. They also have peer friends. Every time I see little children, my heart is filled with love for them, and I think to myself: do you know Jesus? Do you know that He came to save you? I had the opportunity to share from the Word with classmates of one of my daughters at her school. And several of her classmates prayed to receive Jesus into their hearts. I was very happy. As I was leaving school, I saw the mother of one of the girls who accepted Jesus. I hugged her and said joyfully: you know, your girl received salvation today.

But this woman, on the contrary, became very angry, saying: my daughter has already received water baptism. In response, I said: you know that baptism does not give salvation, in order to be saved, you must pray personally to Jesus, and accept by faith what He did on the cross. And baptism is only an external manifestation of the internal changes in the life of a person who has accepted Jesus. Whatever it was, I felt that these children needed to hear the gospel, to hear from God’s Word. So I would now like to show you all this simple method by which you can teach your children, your grandchildren or the children in your church. With very young children, I work a little differently, since they cannot yet write down answers on their own.

So I usually ask them a lot of questions. We read a passage, then we collect facts from it, and then I try to learn from these facts by asking a lot of questions. And I also help them apply these lessons to their lives. It’s amazing to see the Holy Spirit working in them as we go through verse by verse. I think it is very important to be enthusiastic when working with children. For example, when reading the Bible with children at bedtime, do not read to them in a boring voice, showing with your whole appearance that you yourself are bored. When you take the Bible in your hands, show with your whole appearance how wonderful the Book is. I like children’s books with poems, beautiful pictures, they are cool. But I don’t want kids to like only rhymes and pictures, I want them to love the Bible and think that the Word of God is wonderful, it has many exciting stories. I want them to understand that reading the Bible is an exciting and joyful activity. When reading the Bible, show joy, read Bible stories in different voices. When children answer your questions correctly, praise them, encourage them. Let them enjoy spending time in this way.

Show that the Holy Spirit can also work through them. When my girls learned to talk, I taught them to pray, and every time after they prayed, I praised them: “well done! It was a wonderful prayer. I liked the way you prayed about it.» And now, when they pray, they feel confident. And now I would like to invite our beautiful, brave children to this stage. Let’s give them a round of applause.

I’m very glad to see you all here. Now we’re going to have a little Bible study. I want to tell you a little about my Bible, I love it very much. I keep different things in it, for example, there is a photo of my mother, as well as my sister and me. Also in the Bible I keep small drawings drawn by my children, bookmarks also made by them. Also in my Bible is a dried rose I plucked in Philippi, Turkey, in memory of how Paul brought Lydia to Christ. All of these things are little treasures to me, but none of them can ever compare to God’s Word. Every word written in Scripture is a treasure. Steven told me earlier that he plays basketball. In basketball, you need to listen to the coach, who gives different instructions, shows the game schemes that help you play basketball well. And this Book is also like a kind of game plan. And now you and I will open our Bibles to the Gospel of John the 14th chapter and we will talk to you about heaven, okay? But before we start, let me pray if you don’t mind, okay? Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the privilege of sitting across from these little ones that You love so much.

You are among us now, You love each of these children, You know the life of each of them. And I thank You that they had the courage to come here and talk about You. I pray You help us to discern the Scriptures, that the Word was effective, help us think of the truths, the lessons that You want to teach us. I pray that You will be glorified and that we will be filled with joy at the thought of heaven. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. All right, children, open your Bibles to the Gospel of John the 14th chapter. We’ll go through the first six verses with you, okay? I will first read them all, and then we will analyze together separately verse by verse. My Bible may have a slightly different translation, but the essence of this passage is the same. John 14:6 “Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, and believe in me. There are many mansions in my Father’s house. And if it were not so, I would say to you: I am going to prepare a place for you.

And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to Myself, so that you too may be where I am. And where I am going, you know, and you know the way. Thomas said to Him: Lord! we don’t know where you’re going; and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him: I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me. ” Okay, we’ve read the entire passage, now let’s go back to the first verse and discuss it. Somebody read verse 1 again: “Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, and believe in Me.» Okay, let’s see what facts it says here, what’s the point? In the first verse, the words «let not your heart be troubled» are the essence of the verse. What does the word «embarrassed» mean? — «get scared.» Well done, right. The word can also mean «to worry», «to be afraid». Can you remember what in your life you were afraid of, or worried about? Okay, Colton wants to share. Colton: “I once lost something and was very worried about it. And then 2 weeks later, I found what I had lost again.” Well done! Good example. When we lose something, of course we worry. Anyone else want to give an example? I know that my daughters are afraid of the hurricanes that sometimes hit North Carolina. Monet’s girl: «once my niece, when she was little, was almost hit by a car.» Jayden: «There was a forest fire near my house. »

Sure, it’s scary, but you know, God knows when we’re afraid or worried. But when Jesus says in this verse, «Let not your heart be troubled,» does He mean that we should not worry from time to time, or does He mean that we should never worry? — Never, that’s right, Jesus wants us to never worry. Colton: «One day there was a thunderstorm and lightning almost hit my dad and he practically jumped in his car.» We will have all kinds of troubles, problems that can be frightening, but it’s great that Jesus tells us: do not be embarrassed, in other words, do not worry. Why? He gives the answer: «trust God, trust Him and trust me also.» And here Jesus is talking about the same person, God, because Jesus and God are one person. What does the word «believe» mean? — It means «to trust». Yes, trust that He takes care of us and everything will be fine.

So Jesus calls us to trust Him by saying, «Don’t be embarrassed, don’t worry.» Now let’s move on to verse 2 “There are many mansions in my Father’s house. And if it were not so, I would say to you: I am going to prepare a place for you. Now let’s look at the main idea in the first part, where it says «there are many mansions in my Father’s house.» Why did Jesus want to tell us that there are many mansions in heaven? Christian replies: because there are many people.

Yes, Jesus is preparing a lot of space for a lot of people. Stephen replies: «He is preparing a lot of dwellings, mansions.» Yes, in another translation of the Bible, this part sounds exactly like that. Can you imagine? What is the biggest castle or mansion you have seen on TV or in movies? Colton: «At Disneyland, there’s a rollercoaster that takes you high and then brings you down, and it looks like a castle.» The girls and I saw such a huge castle, which had a backlight in the dark. And I thought to myself: if Walt Disney Studios could build such a castle, what would heaven look like? It will be very cool there! Colton says: “It will be much better there than any place on earth that you have ever visited. I even think that compared to castles in heaven, Walt Disney Castle will look like an old ruin. What Jesus has in store for us is nothing compared to anything here on earth. Amazing, isn’t it? The second part of the verse says, «If it were not so, I would say to you: I go to prepare a place for you.»

In other words, Jesus says, if there wasn’t enough room, I would tell you about it. Why do you think Jesus said this? What does Jesus mean by these words about Himself? Steven: «God is sending a message about what a house in heaven will look like.» Okay, and there’s a lesson to be learned from this that Jesus is telling the truth. When Jesus talks about something, He is really telling the truth. And here we have His Word, the Bible, and every word here is the truth, there is nothing invented in the Bible. And now we can ask ourselves: am I telling the truth? Am I honest with my parents?

Am I honest with my teacher about my homework? These are the questions we can ask ourselves. After all, Jesus always spoke the truth, and we should be like Him, right? When we invite Jesus into our lives, His Holy Spirit begins to live in us, so we want to be like Jesus. Our passage goes on to say, «I go to prepare a place for you.» Imagine that He is preparing a place for you. On this occasion, I would like to share this thought with you. The Lord created a polar bear that lives in cold lands, so it has thick hair. He loves to swim in icy water, sleeps on ice floes, dives into the water, hunting for fish. He likes to live in cold climates. What if God created the polar bear and left it to live in the New Mexico desert? A polar bear would not know how to live there. But God, having created this bear, knows what climate and terrain is best for him to live in, God knows that the bear likes cold frosty weather, so He let the polar bear live at the pole. If God knows polar bears so well, or seahorses, any kind of animal, then surely God knows what you like, right? He knows everything about you. And now I want you children to tell me something about yourself. What do you like to play with, what do you like to do, what exactly in the sky will make you feel at home. Can you tell me what you like to do?

Monet replies: «swimming.» Okay, God knows you like to swim. You’ll probably enjoy floating in the sky, God knows that. Steven: «ride a scooter.» If you like to ride scooters, then in the sky, probably, a scooter is waiting for you especially for you. Jayden replies: «build with Lego.» I can’t even fully imagine how it will be possible to build in the sky. God knows you like to collect things and build. Jaylin replies: «I like drawing, creativity.» God knows what you like to draw. You know, Jesus created you this way, put in you the desire to draw. He knows that when you enter your room in a house in heaven, you will not be disappointed by the look of the interior. I am sure you will be delighted with the color and patterns on the walls, exclaiming: I can’t believe how beautiful it is, He knew about it! It will be more beautiful there than here.

Steven adds, «Maybe we’ll have flying bikes.» Yes exactly! Imagine, there will be incredible prospects in heaven. For He knows us so well, and heaven is prepared for us. It will be something special, a place where you feel at home. There you will feel at home, because the sky was prepared especially for you. Now let’s read verse 3 «And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, that you also may be where I am.» Did you see something interesting in this verse? What facts can we see for ourselves? He repeats again: «I’m going to prepare a place for you.» Do you remember when your mom had to tell you something twice? Can you give an example? Jayden replies «when I have to tidy my room.» Okay, she reminds you to remember to clean your room. Okay, Monet says, «get ready to go.» I know I tell this to my kids all the time. Why do you think your parents tell you something two, three, four times? What do they mean by this? Steven replies: «The parents want the house to be clean. »

And this is also true. But most importantly, they repeat their words so that you don’t forget them. If, for example, you have an appointment with the dentist, then they remind you of it, saying: do not forget at 2:30 in the afternoon you have a doctor’s appointment.

Therefore, in this verse, Jesus seems to be telling us: “Don’t forget, I am preparing a place for you, don’t forget about it, and rejoice!” this verse also says: I will come again and take you to myself, so that you too may be where I am. Jesus is returning soon.

Did you know that Jesus, before going to heaven, was on the Mount of Olives. I had the opportunity to visit this very mountain with my mother. We stood on this mountain, where Jesus was with his disciples before the ascension. Then He began to rise up into the sky, through the clouds, while the disciples looked at Him until He was out of sight. And the angel asked them: Why are you still looking up? Jesus will return in exactly the same way. He will return from the clouds. And in this passage, Jesus says about this: I will come back for you, for each of you. Will Jesus return, at the same time starting to rudely shout like a cowboy: “come on, everyone gather in a herd!” No, in this passage He says that He will return specifically for each of us. When He returns, He will take the hand of Stephen, Morissa, Alisha, Jaylin, Jayden, Christian, Monet, Colton, and we will all rise with Him together. Isn’t it amazing? And I thought, if He comes back for me, and not for the crowd, comes back for each of us, will heaven really be a place of loneliness?

Of course not. I have an older daughter named Bell who doesn’t like to fall asleep alone. Since she learned to walk, every night before going to bed she comes up to me and asks: Mom, let’s talk a little. She doesn’t like being alone in a room. And when you are in your dwellings in heaven, you will not be alone. Jesus will take us to Himself and be with us, isn’t that great? If He really is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, then isn’t it wonderful to think that we will be with Him? Have you ever watched the London Olympics? Have you seen Prince William, Princess Kate, Queen Elizabeth on TV attending some of the games?

Imagine if Prince William suddenly came up to you, Jayden or you Jaylin, took your hand and said: “I want to take you and show you Winsor Castle. I’ll show you all the secret passages in the castle, show you all the rooms, and the old beds, and large kitchens in which you can bake a bunch of chocolate cakes at once. We can play everywhere.» And what if the prince at the same time says: «you know, Winsor Castle is now yours, you can keep it to yourself.» You can imagine, it’s amazing and wonderful! But you know, it really will happen to us! Because the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who created the whole universe, will return for you, He has already prepared a place for you, He will take your hand and say: “Let me show you everything here.

Let’s go pet the lions, let’s run with the zebras, and we’ll do all this together.» Colton: «I have a book that says we’ll stroke lions, we’ll have fun, there’ll be dwellings in the sky, and we’ll be able to fly.»

Yes exactly. Colton: «It’ll be like a water park.» It will be much better there than in the water park. Let’s move on to the next verse now. Verse 4: «Where I am going, you know, and you know the way. » Okay, He’s talking about how we know the way.

Okay, now I want to ask you, who knows how to get to heaven? Alisha answers: through Jesus Christ. Yes, exactly, through Jesus. Tell me what He did for you? Why is it now possible for us to go to heaven? Jayden wants to answer. Jayden: He died on the cross for us. Yes exactly. He died on the cross for us, shedding His blood so that we could get what? — the rescue! And also forgiveness, cleansing from all our sins. That’s how you get to heaven.

We need to believe in Jesus, to believe that He died on the cross, that’s what gives us the ticket to heaven. Where we live, in the city of Rally there is a small sightseeing train. To get on such a train, we need to buy tickets. And then there is a conductor at the train who always asks to see tickets. Before we get on the train, we need to show him our tickets. And if Alisha came up to the train, and imagine, the conductor asks her for a ticket, and she answers: I don’t have a ticket. Then the conductor will have to say: I’m sorry, but then you can’t get on the train. And you will have to leave without getting on the train, despite the fact that you so wanted to get on it. And our ticket to heaven is Jesus. Our ticket is the fact that Jesus died on the cross for us. And when we believe in Jesus, the moment we pray and ask Jesus to come into our lives, we get the ticket. Colton says: «My dad died not too long ago because he had cancer, but I’m happy he went to heaven.» You know, my grandma is in heaven right now and I miss her so much almost every day. And I can’t wait for the moment when I get to heaven, because there we will see our family. And you know, it’s great that we can also tell people about Jesus, and thereby lead them to heaven. There is plenty of room for everyone, so we can invite all our friends. Thank you Colton for sharing with us. So let’s move on to the next verse.

Verse 5: Thomas said to Him, Lord! we don’t know where you’re going; and how can we know the way? So here’s this Thomas guy who wanted to know how he could get to heaven. And among your friends, were there those who wondered how to get to heaven? Or perhaps you heard your parents tell someone about Jesus and that person asked how to get to heaven? Have you ever heard such a question? Monet replies: I participate in a choir called «His choir.» Indeed, even through songs one can talk about Jesus. Can any of you children tell me how you invited Jesus into your heart? Maybe your mother told you about Him? Jayden replies, «I started believing in God.» And who told you about Him, mother? Jayden: «I don’t know.» It is always good to remember the moment when repentance occurred. All three of my daughters invited Jesus into their hearts.

When one of them said that she wanted to invite Jesus into her heart, I answered her: Bell, tell me what is sin? And she answered me: the sin is when I pushed my sister Sophia out of bed. I tell her: right, it’s a sin. Then, we talked more about it, and she said she wanted Jesus to forgive her for her sins. Then we knelt down together and prayed together. She repeated the words of the prayer after me, thanking Jesus for His death on the cross. Do you kids remember that moment when you got down on your knees and asked God for forgiveness for your sin and invited Him into your life? Perhaps you didn’t get down on your knees, but you still prayed that way. Colton: «I asked Him for forgiveness for everything I did and asked for help to become better, to be good.» It’s fine! You know, it’s great to ask questions. Thomas asked them. My middle daughter Sophia went to kindergarten when she was 5 years old. She was on the basketball court when she saw two girls arguing. Sophia ran up to them and said: do not quarrel, you must love each other, Jesus does not want you to quarrel. One of the girls said: I don’t want to quarrel anymore, it’s a pity that I don’t know Jesus. Sophia immediately said: you can get to know Him. You can invite Jesus into your heart. That girl answered: I don’t know how to do it.

Sophia then says to her: I’ll show you. Right there on the basketball court, they prayed together, and that little girl named Madison Grace accepted Jesus. She was so happy, they started jumping rope all over the place together. No matter your age, you can always talk about Jesus. No matter where you are, whether it’s in the grocery store or somewhere else, you can always say to another: do you know that Jesus loves you. You can tell your friends about Jesus, or your very best friend. Don’t be afraid to do it, okay?

Let’s move on to the next verse. Verse 6: “Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Can anyone tell me what is the most important fact here? What catches your eye the most when you read this verse? Jesus answers in this verse. And the lesson for us in this verse is that when we ask Jesus about something, He answers us. How can He answer us? How can we hear Him? Marissa answers: through the Bible. Yes indeed! When we need to hear an answer from Jesus, we open the Bible and start reading. It is also written in this verse, «I am the way.» I want to ask you, are there any other ways to heaven? Alisha replies «no».

Correctly! There are many different religions, Muslims, Buddhists and others, but we have to tell them that Jesus is the only way. Jesus really is the only way. And if someone tells you: I am a good person. I do many good deeds, so I will also go to heaven. Is it possible to go to heaven on the basis of good deeds? Of course not. The only way to get to heaven is through Jesus. You kids are very smart. Colton says: “I have a verse on my chain that I want to read: be strong and courageous, do not be afraid and do not be horrified, for the Lord God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9″. Well done Colton.

He shared with us the two truths we just talked about. Firstly, we should not be afraid, and secondly, our Lord God is with us. He is always with us. Well, then in our verse it says that Jesus is not only the way, but the truth. And we have already told you that Jesus always tells the truth. And now Jesus repeats again and says something to us twice. Do you think it really matters to Him that we understand this truth? Oh sure! Can any of you tell me how to be more honest? Alisha replies: «through obedience to parents, telling them the truth.» You know, I always tell my girls that even if you did something wrong, it’s better to just come and tell the truth, because God wants us to tell the truth. If you did something wrong and then lied to cover it up, that’s even worse. Jesus wants us to always tell the truth. Steven says: «Even if you stole something, you have to be honest.» Yes, indeed, even if it’s hard to tell the truth.

This is a good lesson for us. So Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life. Maurice, can you tell me what is the opposite word for «life»? The antonym of this word is the word «death». And if Jesus is Life, then He’s not dead. We too can have life, because Jesus is life. If Jesus lives in your heart, and we will have eternal life with Him, we will live forever with Him, then tell me, what is He to us? What does He give us that makes our lives special? Christian replies, «He gives us love. » Monet: «He gives us peace.» Steven: «He gives us joy.»

Alisha: «He gives us what we need.» Yes, He does not always give us what we want, but He gives us everything we need on this earth, He takes care of us. Christian says, «He gives us patience.» This is indeed true, and I myself need patience every day. Jesus gives us all this, He makes our life richer. Without Jesus it is impossible to have all this. Without Jesus there will be death, there will be no patience, there will be no peace. Jesus gave us life so that we ourselves would give our lives to Him, saying, «Do whatever you want with my life.» God made each of us special. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Scripture says: no one can come to the Father except through Me. Monet says, «Jesus gives us kindness.» Have you ever communicated with a person who is truly kind and sweet, from whose face the world comes? And you think to yourself: I guarantee that this person is a Christian, I am sure that he knows Jesus. And then you really know that this person is a Christian. Jesus changes us from within. Verse 6 also says that Jesus is the only way, and we know that Jesus is the only way to heaven. During this time of study, we learned a lot, right?

We learned that He had prepared a very cool place for us. Jesus knows everything about each of us, knows that someone likes legos, someone likes motorcycles, and He is preparing heaven for us, an amazing place. God created us and knows what each of us likes. Jesus always speaks the truth through His Word, and He wants us to always speak the truth as well. He will come back and take us away and be with us forever. We will not be alone in heaven.

And if Jesus lives in our heart, then we have all the things you listed: life, goodness, peace, patience. So much can be learned from His Word. And you children can already read so well, so you can take the Bible every morning, or later in the afternoon, when it suits you, you can take your favorite passage or favorite book of the Bible, and as you read, think about what lessons you can learn from your passage. Always think about what Jesus wants to tell you through this passage. Always remember to pray before starting.

And the Bible will come to life for you. It contains many amazing stories: Daniel in the lions’ den, Moses crossing the sea with the people, Jonah in the belly of the whale.

There are many interesting stories in the Bible through which Jesus can speak to you. Monet says: «there is also a book of Revelation.» Yes indeed, and it says that Jesus will return. Kids, you are all just awesome, and the heavens are happy to look at you. Let me end with a prayer.

Dear Jesus, it is such a great joy for me to be with these children today who already have faith. It’s such a privilege to come to You and take Your Word to the children because You love them. We know from Your Word that children sat on Your lap, You loved them, You were interested in listening to them. And I know these children are very close to Your heart Jesus.

And I pray that each of these children will be special in Your eyes, that each of them will grow in love for You, that they will study the Bible, that they will tell others about You, that they will be bold in their faith, and with wisdom from you shared with their friends. Father, I thank You for their courage to come and be here on the stage, bless them for that. I pray that You will be with all mothers who have children, that they will share God’s Word with their children. You yourself give and multiply this spiritual fruit through study. And we pray for all this in the precious and holy name of Jesus.

    Amen.
And now it will be time for questions and answers. You can ask questions to me or my mom. You may have specific questions about how to teach your children the way I teach them.

Q: What if you have grown children who have children. And they don’t want you to teach your grandchildren?

Answer: This is a good and difficult question. My mother talked about prayer. You can pray that God will open doors, opportunities to share with them. Perhaps you will have a moment when you can tell them something. Because Jesus wants us to tell our children (grandchildren) about Him. Perhaps they will see Jesus through your behavior, through your actions when you are around your grandchildren. Because when we love Jesus, it cannot be hidden, it will show in our behavior. When I walk with children on the street, I can ask them: who do you think created these trees? And we start talking about it, I add some Bible verse. And let them ask questions too. In my life I shared with children about Jesus, they accepted Him in their hearts, and then they returned to their parents and told them about Him. Their parents started asking questions. But you start with prayer. Pray that God himself will raise questions in their hearts. Perhaps God will change the circumstances in your children’s lives, and their hearts will become more open. I’m sorry to hear about your circumstances, but I know God is in control, He’s over everything. He can help share with his grandchildren, because He loves them very much, and He wants them to know Him.

Q: My 4 year olds get distracted after 15 minutes of study and want to know what their snack food is going to be like. Should Bible study be more concise?

Answer: yes, of course. I have a 5 year old daughter myself. And she is very active. I usually study Proverbs with my daughters. Often I just take one verse and break it down. You can deal with just one verse, just spend a few minutes with them. The study doesn’t have to be long. Our stage study was long, it was a real Bible study.

You will certainly shorten your study time by studying one verse. It’s amazing how a 4-5 year old can learn lessons. My 5 year old always tries to raise her hand and talk about the lesson. For example, she often says: we must be kind. And we adults should help them by asking leading questions, helping them think about the lessons.

Q: My child is 20 years old. And she saw that I grew spiritually by attending Calvary Chapel. She tells me: you have changed a lot, mom. But I can’t get her to attend church with me. How can I encourage her to do this, besides praying for her, and I pray a lot for her, what else can I do?

Answer: It’s not easy, I understand you. But now a thought came to my mind. Ask her if she wants to invite her friends over to your house, she might feel more comfortable having her friends with her. You can eat pizza together, or do something together that they like. And in between, just ask: do you mind if I share a little passage from the Bible, I have learned such and such a lesson for myself, and this truth means a lot to me. Just be very open with them. I am very honest with my children. For example, my husband was unemployed for a long time. To put it mildly, we counted every penny. And we talked to the kids about our inner struggles. When they see that you are real, honest, and you begin to share something with them, a verse, and the truth that God showed through this verse, sometimes they can understand and relate to themselves what you are talking about. You are not just trying to teach them something, but share your experience, what God has shown you.

Question: You had such a great Bible study with the children, are you a teacher by profession? In my case, the truth about how God uses our weaknesses and shows His strength through them is true. I barely finished school. I have Attention Deficit Disorder, I get distracted very quickly, and in this I am like children. When I was growing up, I had a learning disability and had difficulty reading and understanding. Therefore, it is a real miracle that I can read the verse, understand it and analyze it with the children. Because very often I feel that my head is just empty. It was very difficult for me to study at school. My mother prayed with me that I would take the tests because it was very difficult for me. By the way, I taught physical education for a year. At the end of the first year, I was tired because the children were complaining in class, and I asked myself why they complain, who doesn’t like physical education? My major in college was physical education.

I chose this specialty only because there was no need to study mathematics or foreign languages. I just love God’s Word, I learned this from my mother and grandmother. I just love sharing the Word with children and at home I do Bible studies for my neighbors. God takes our weaknesses and uses us, He helps us. It’s the Holy Spirit that gives the words, we can trust Him to direct.

Question: Rachel, you have a real gift. I think about my sister’s grandchildren. Is it possible to do a Bible study at the same time for children of different ages: 14, 13, 8 years old and also very active 5-year-old twins?

Answer: Recently I was at a meeting of Christian athletes. My husband is a coach there. We were in the camp, and I met schoolgirls in grades 6-7-8, and I taught them using the three-question method. And they loved it so much. One of them accepted Christ. They could not believe that they could examine the Scriptures by this method on their own. I also had my small children with me, who can be taught simply by asking questions. By the time children are in the sixth grade, they can take notes on their own: write down facts, write down lessons learned, write questions to themselves. But for younger children, it’s better to just ask a lot of questions.

Question: I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old child and we have never studied the Bible together. Can you suggest where we should start?

Answer: I will share what I did myself. We studied the life of Abraham, it was interesting to us. We took several verses. For example, we were discussing the passage where Lot began to make claims against Abraham over the land, saying, I want this, I don’t want that. And the lesson for my children was: do not argue, do not swear by your brothers and sisters, with your family. Or you can take small stories from the gospel. For example, my children and I were reviewing a passage where Jesus, along with his disciples, was dismantling and cleaning fishing nets. And the lesson from that passage was: I have to clean my room.

Of course, children learn information at their level. Just take little gospel stories: Jesus calms the storm. You can study the Gospel of Mark together. Or you can ask the children: what do you want to study? The story of Noah? Jonah? And so on.

Question: Can you name these three questions for which you study the Bible?
Answer: The first question is: what facts are contained in the passage? You are listing facts. Second question: what does it mean? From every fact you learn a lesson. Third question: what does this mean in my life? You rephrase the lesson into the form of a question and ask it to yourself, and then think about the practical application. I simply call this method of parsing the Bible «three questions.» Now, when I look at a verse from the Bible, I immediately think of the truth, the lesson contained there.

Question: We live in a world where the role of women is defined by society in a completely different way compared to Scripture. I am not yet a mother, but I am thinking about these questions. I know that to be a woman after God’s own heart, we must read the Bible and set a godly example for our families. I don’t have children yet, my mother never taught me anything like that, and that’s why, frankly, I’m afraid to have children. You mentioned that when your children first started talking, you started teaching them how to pray. When will I have children, when and with what exactly do I need to start teaching them?

Answer: good question. Start from the hospital, just kidding :). But in fact, as soon as I gave birth, and they put my newborn in my arms, I just quietly said: “Do you know what Jesus did for you?” I deal with them every day. As soon as they started trying to speak, I started teaching them the word «Jesus». When they are older, I always speak to them from Scripture.

There is a verse in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy that says, no matter what you do, walk, sit, always talk about Scripture with your children. All my children accepted Jesus before they were three years old, and they knew what they were doing, despite their early age. I told them what Jesus had done for them in very accessible words. I just said sin is everything you do wrong. And they understood what sin was, because they knew they had done wrong. I explained everything at their level. When they started talking, I always prayed with them, before meals as well.

They saw me pray. I told them various Bible stories as they sat on my lap. I remember I was pregnant with my second child, and my eldest two-year-old daughter sat on my tummy and we read Bible stories together. When we prayed, my daughter repeated the words of the prayer after me: Dear Jesus, thank you for this day, thank you for mom and dad, help us, and so on. And this is the kind of repetition that teaches them to pray. Then they begin to understand themselves and pray themselves. I always talk to them about Jesus, and I say verses from the Scriptures, so this is a common thing for our family. Just start doing it from the very beginning, always speak to them from Scripture, and put it into practice in every situation. For example: a child comes home from school and complains: this boy misbehaved with me. And you answer: well, what does the Word of God say about those who mistreat us? How should we respond according to the Word? Always use every moment to teach children. And if you’ve never done this with your kids before, it’s never too late to start.

Woman from the audience: We have already asked before how to teach children if their parents do not allow it. I just wanted to add, play Christian music in the house, because children memorize the words of the songs very quickly.

Rachel: Great words. There is so much Christian music now. Excellent comment. Thank you! We don’t have time anymore. Thank you very much, teach children the Word!

Will Smith: «Building a film around human fear is a very smart idea, in my opinion»

From the moment the Smiths entered the Astoria Hotel, a crowd of fans had formed at the entrance, eager for autographs and chatting, waiting for about 5 hours while the actors talked to reporters.

Will Smith brought with him not only his son and bodyguards, but also, it seemed, his whole family and friends — he was accompanied by at least 15 people. By their appearance, this crowd warned of the imminent appearance of the actor.

    — You and your son are working together in the new film – who came up with the idea?
Will: I wanted to create a little family story, a father and son story, inside a huge action, a blockbuster with all the necessary special effects. When Jayden worked with Jackie Chan on The Karate Kid, they met every day. I was terribly jealous of them, even jealous! I wanted to make a story with just Jayden and me. It took about three years from the moment the idea was born to the creation of the film. This is very fast for a picture with a high level of special effects.

    — Recently, in science fiction films, people are increasingly relocated to other planets. And you have the same story again.
    — When we started working on the film, we thought it would be fantastic. However, in the end it turned out that there are many scientists who believe that sooner or later humanity will really have to evacuate from the Earth. So it’s science, not science fiction. Richard Branson owns Virgin Galactic, a private spaceflight company. We went to visit him, and there we were also convinced that one day we would have to leave our planet.

    — Why are there no firearms in the picture, only cold ones? The hero could easily shoot all the enemies. In general, it somehow turned out illogical.
    — This is the director’s idea. M. Night Shyamalan wanted to create a new world in which man does not repeat the mistakes made on Earth. Getting rid of firearms has become one of the natural priorities of mankind. On the new planet, people do not have polluting mechanisms, cars, no one eats meat, because there are no cows and pigs. The use of edged weapons instead of pistols within the framework of this concept seemed to us quite logical.

    — In the film, the urs, the main enemies of man, find their victims by the smell of the fear pheromone. Why don’t the characters put on spacesuits — again it turned out to be illogical?
    — We wanted to draw attention to human vulnerability. Building a film around human fear is a very smart idea, in my opinion. Fear is a figment of our imagination, and the film is about that. We can change a lot if we overcome our fears.

    — You are not afraid of anything in the picture. And in fact?
    — I’m really not afraid of anything! Except little mice. I’m not afraid of squirrels. I’m not afraid of possums either, and snakes. But these tiny mice — very much!

    — Your son’s name in the movie is China. China in Russian is the name of the country. Did it happen by chance?
    — We wanted to make our universe international and inspired by ideas from all over the world. We really liked the way «China» sounds. When I found out that it exists in several languages with different meanings, I thought: «This is the perfect name.»

    — They write that Jayden is ready for an independent life and wants to leave home. Will you let him go?
    — I once joked that when Jayden does a better movie than mine, I’ll kick him out of the house!

    — There are many difficult psychological moments in the film. When will you stop bullying your son?!
    — This question is constantly asked by his mother! The story that underlies the film is a global story of human survival, struggle with circumstances. Through suffering, a person achieves spiritual perfection.
Jayden: Just like in the Bible!
Will: Yes, just like in the Bible. Each of the saints endured real suffering for the sake of spiritual growth. And I immediately told my son that he would suffer a lot in this film!

    — Jaden, what books do you read?
Jayden: I love the twilight saga. I’m currently reading The Catcher in the Rye. I also really like the Mastery of Love. When I was 9 years old, I took on Hemingway, but got stuck on the tenth page and was about to quit, but my father said: “Read, son, then you will understand how good this book is.” And I finished reading, which I don’t regret now, because books help to find happiness in life.

    — The main problem of the hero of «The Catcher in the Rye» was that he did not know what kind of person he was, where his place in life was. Do you know?
    Jayden:
I think yes, I know what I want to do with my life. I would not like to stop only in the entertainment industry, I will do as much as possible. I want to win every business that exists. I want to produce carpets, furniture, whatever, until I reach perfection in this area.

    — Are you interested in anything other than business?
    Jayden
: When I found out that only 1% of the water on the planet is drinkable, it was a big shock for me. Now our family is engaged in the production of water. It seems to a person that he has oceans that can be desalinated at any moment — but this is not so, because any violence against nature is killing our planet.

    — Which of you made the most money from this movie?
    Will:
I earned everything and also stole some of Jayden’s money.

    VLADIMIR BOROVOY

The project, which was born from the idea of Will Smith, a big fan of the sci-fi genre, turned out to be a kind of family business. The actor’s son, Jaden, plays one of the main roles, Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as her brother Caleb Pinkett, act as producers. Well, the head of the family not only participated in the creation of the script and was engaged in producing, but also played the second main role in the film, although he was originally going to star in the drama «The American Can», dedicated to hurricane Katrina. As a result, his role there went to Denzel Washington.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan; the negotiations took place against the backdrop of the mediocre results of his previous work, The Last Airbender, but this did not frighten anyone. The Indian director, in turn, readily agreed, since he had long dreamed of working with Will Smith — for the sake of such an opportunity, he even forgot about his inviolable rule to make films only according to his own scripts.

The shooting of the film was accompanied by an active campaign in social networks, judging by the preliminary results, very successful. According to research conducted by boxoffice.com four weeks before the premiere, «After Earth» was mentioned in more than 10,000 tweets over a five-day period. For comparison, Joseph Kosinski’s recent film Oblivion has 603 mentions in a similar study on Twitter. The results on Facebook are even more impressive: «After Earth» in terms of the number of subscribers on their page (more than 963 thousand) took second place among the premieres of the year, losing only to Iron Man 3. Other online platforms also hint at a good future box office: for example, on the Flixster website, 97% of the more than 27,000 users surveyed expressed their readiness to go to the cinema to see a movie.

As is known from the data that representatives of Columbia dared to voice (nowadays it is customary to let the mystery around the plot details of the film thicker), the adventures of the father and son Smiths unfold on Earth 1000 years after humanity was forced to leave it. To give the post-apocalyptic world more credibility and volume, a 300-page «bible» was created, which recorded the details of the exodus of people from their native planet and the events of the next millennium. During filming, the director and his team constantly checked with her, and the author of the idea and producer Smith announced that he intended to create a whole mountain of related content based on the «bible»: the list includes mini-series, computer games, comics, books. It’s hard not to appreciate the wisdom of such a strategy: if suddenly the box office is not as great as we would like, merchandising and spin-offs will not let you drown.

Diversification in the case of post-apocalyptic films is generally useful. Hollywood has already found out that the topic requires a subtle approach: most often, the scheme works with a bang when the creators are not limited only to profile techniques, as in the Matrix trilogy, for example. Otherwise, box office totals could suffer — such is the relentless statistic. Apparently, the mass audience is not ready to get used to the ruins of the familiar world without looking back, in which the action takes place in such productions.

However, the film, which took first place in the ranking of the most profitable post-apocalypse, collected quite an impressive box office. Perhaps because Will Smith played the central role in it: «I am a legend» by Francis Lawrence, where the main character in the company of a sheepdog wanders around New York, inhabited by ghouls, earned $585.3 million with a budget of $150 million, showing quite suitable for blockbuster box office success rate (CCR) of 3.9.

«The Day After Tomorrow» by Roland Emmerich settled in second place: the sudden climate change that hit the planet cost $125 million in production, and brought in $544. 2 million at the worldwide box office — this is a MCC of 4.35. It should be noted that although serious scientists talked about the not very plausible chain of events in the film, they rejoiced at the very fact that a big-budget film for a wide audience was released on the topic of climate change.

The third place in the top 5 belongs to the classics of the post-apocalypse genre — there is nowhere to put a test. She was able to encroach on high fees only due to the fact that she is a full-length animation by Pixar. We are talking about «WALL-E», a touching love story of a cleaning robot, where human characters are at best in the background: a very expensive project, which had a $180 million budget, brought in $521.3 million in profit, showed a MCC of 2.89 and received «Oscar».

Further, there is a serious drop in the profits of post-apocalyptic works. Above the total level of $ 100-150 million, only two works are noticeable. Number four in the ranking is the final installment of the Terminator franchise to date, subtitled «May the Savior Come». In general, the series has actively flirted with the post-apocalypse before, but only in the fourth issue did the action finally move into the gloomy future of mankind, defeated by the almighty Skynet. With a large budget — $ 200 million — the film earned clearly less than the creators expected — $ 371.3 million (CCU 1.85), which cast doubt on the release of the new part.

Closes the thematic top 5 is another representative of the film series — «Resident Evil: Life After Death». Director/screenwriter Paul Anderson has sent his wife Milla Jovovich (Wonder Girl Alice) to explore an Earth devastated by the T-Virus. The cost of production here is noticeably less than that of other participants in the rating — only $60 million, the fees are also $296.2 million, but the TCC is the most convincing — 4.93 points.

American names

Back to list of American names

The formation of the American nation dates back to the end of the 18th century. Its basis was the British, Scots and Irish. Over time, they mixed with the Germans, Dutch, Swedes and French. The main features of culture and the national language were brought to the country by the British.

To date, the American nation continues its formation. The descendants of immigrants from different countries have certain differences in style and standard of living. Indians and Africans had a certain influence on the formation of the American nation. The ethnic composition of the inhabitants of the United States of America is quite heterogeneous. This affects the specifics of the names and surnames of Americans.

In America, the three-term model of naming is becoming increasingly popular. So instead of one name and surname, two personal names and a surname are increasingly used. In the 17th and 18th centuries, residents with an English surname usually had only one given name. In the 19th century, a three-name model appeared. The second name people usually get in honor of famous personalities, relatives or important historical events.

The two given name plus surname scheme is most commonly used in writing. In this case, instead of the first name, an initial is sometimes put. It all depends on the origin of the person. In some cases, the first name is written in full, and the second is indicated by one letter. Another spelling option is when their initials are put instead of names, and the surname is written in full.

Male and female American names

American names, both male and female, originate from Latin, Germanic, Hebrew, Slavic and Celtic sources. The early settlers often used Old Testament biblical names. At present, these names are rarely given to children. They can only be heard in the south and southwest of North America.

In Catholic families, children are often given the names of saints.

Some newborns get their names based on their meaning and harmony with the surname. Books with a list of traditional names and their interpretation are popular among parents.

Americans often use derivatives of personal names in naming — various abbreviations, adding suffixes, etc. Derivative names are used not only in everyday communication, but also in official ones. For example, the female name Elizabeth has 34 derivatives, and the male name Robert has 10.

There is a huge variety of female personal names in America. Their origin is often associated with plant names and gems. It is customary in the country to symbolically assign a certain flower to any state. So, for example, for the states of Iowa and Georgia it is a rose, for North Carolina it is a daisy, for South Carolina it is jasmine. Due to this tradition, women are often named according to the flower assigned to this state.

Men often get their names from close relatives — father or grandfather. If in the family the son and father have the same name, then the prefix “senior” is added to the father’s name, and “younger” to the son. In written form, an abbreviation (Sr. or Jr. ) is added to the names.

Sometimes children get names derived from well-known surnames, such as Franklin, the names of some historical places, or by combining two names.

In rare cases, men are given female names and women are male. There are also a number of female names that appeared as a result of adding endings characteristic of female names to male ones.

The diversity of the ethnic composition of the United States of America is also reflected in the personal names of its citizens. In different ethnic groups, names reflecting their national color are common. For example, Spanish names are Dolores, Federico, Irish — Patrick, Italian — Antonio, Paolo, German — Martha, Rudolf and others.

These names are typical for families with mixed marriages, but not only. Some American names have evolved from adaptations of their foreign counterparts.

American Surnames

Family names are often found in the country. The first colonists appeared in the United States from Germany, Holland and the British Isles. For this reason, a number of surnames that have become traditional for the country are of German, English and Dutch origin.

According to the structure of their education, many American surnames are divided into the following:

  • formed with suffixes -s, -son
  • derivatives of locality names (pond, rock, spring)
  • place names (Austin, England)
  • job titles (miller, baker)
  • names of plants, animals, as well as abstract concepts (bush, hawk, justice)
  • nicknames and quality characteristics (noble, sharp)
  • family names of various ethnic origins. The surname, formed from the word «blacksmith», has many derivatives. In German, she sounds like Schmidt, in Spanish — Herrera, in Czech — Kovar.

The spelling of some surnames helps to establish their historical roots. Almost all foreign surnames do not obey the rules of the English language due to their phonetic features. This has always caused difficulties in their writing. In documents, officials often wrote down the names of migrants by ear, which eventually led to the American version of this or that name and surname.

Some migrants themselves have tried to change their surnames to English. A huge number of foreign surnames have undergone spelling changes. Adaptation of foreign surnames occurred in several ways:

  • Abbreviation of foreign surnames for easier pronunciation
  • changes in the spelling of surnames. For example, Chinese letters into Latin letters.
  • Calculation of the surnames of migrants into English (German word Konig «King» — King)
  • addition of any letters in accordance with the English spelling in the surname or doubling the existing ones

The foreign sound of the surname often made it difficult for immigrants to get a job. The fact of discrimination was especially acute for visitors from Asia, as well as Southern and Eastern Europe at the end of 19early 20th centuries.

Americanization affected the majority of foreign names and surnames. African slaves were given new names. Often these were mythological, classical and biblical names. Over time, European and American names became traditional for them.

Some immigrants oppose changing their surnames to the American style. They tend to emphasize their ethnicity. Most often, this statement refers to the descendants of Mexicans of Hispano-Indian origin. Their complex names and surnames have practically not changed.

American heirs of African descent often change their names to African-style ones. So young African Americans seek to establish their culture in the country.

Particles inherent in various European names and surnames are capitalized in the American version, which is not typical for the European spelling standard. Some particles are used individually. The right to write them depends only on the preferences of the bearers of the name. If the surname is long, most often in oral speech its abbreviated version is used. In library catalogs, the author’s name is often written according to the scheme: surname + first name or given names. In this version, a comma is placed after the surname according to American spelling rules.

Pseudonyms are common among American citizens. This is especially true for creative people who strive for the sonority of their first and last name. So some artists assign themselves American names, and some, on the contrary, in an effort to stand out, change them to brighter and more exotic ones.

To date, among the inhabitants of America, the names of twenty nationalities are common. Almost all foreign names and surnames are transformed into English ones.

Widespread in the US is a variety of forms of address. Most often they are used when contacting close people, friends and relatives. In formal settings, it is customary for Americans to address strangers by their first or last name. At the same time, before the appeal, the word Mister is used for men, for a married woman Mistress, for a girl — Miss, for a boy under 15 — Master.

Among Americans, the most popular male names are John, George, Charles and William.
