  •  “There are some friends whom you don’t see or meet every day, yet you know they are there for you.”

You and your friends can be certain about each other that despite being not available each day, they will be the ones to push you through troubling times and support you.

  •  “How strange is it when you can go without talking to someone for years yet get reminded of them every day!”

There are friendships and relationships which might have ended abruptly, or you don’t seem to connect well later on in life, but that does not mean you harbor any grudges towards each other. You still value the good memories that you both had created together before.

  •  “Good friends are tantamount to the stars in the sky.”

The stars that you see in the sky are far away. However, you find a sense of comfort in watching the vast sky. This is similar to your connection to good friends. Despite the distance and lack of time, you seem to share something with them every time you end up making contact.

  •  “We must have moved on, but the memories don’t seem to.”

A friendship might end up unanticipatedly over an argument or misunderstanding. Yet what lives on inside our minds are the memories. They never die.

  •  “Friendships that never fade are truly blessed.”

With passing time, some friendships tend to change because the people involved in them change. However, those friendships where things remain the same after years are blessed enough to turn into an enduring bond.

  •  “I remember, despite arguments, we have been glued to each other. I hope it stays forever.”

How deeply you think about your friendship is reflected in this quote. You can’t even seem to afford to lose a bond like this. So, you just let them know how badly you miss them if they are away or somewhere far from you.

  •  “Look up, and you will realize that all this while you have been under the same sky.”

At times, when you end up missing your friend way too much, navigate your mind to see the brighter side. Acknowledge the fact that both of you are on the same planet and under the same sky.

  •  *What are goodbyes for? They are usually a way to let the counterpart know that you are gonna miss them.”

Every time we say goodbye to someone, it usually conveys that we wish to see them sooner. And also, it expresses forthrightly that you are going to miss them for real.

  •  “My mind knows that distance doesn’t matter, but who is going to convince my heart about it?”

This is a worrying thought inside our minds as we can calm our nerves, but we cannot seem to persuade our hearts that distance won’t affect every friendship.

  •  “All I know is that our hearts are close to each other.”

In friendships that are distant, there is usually a fear of getting detached over time. However, this is not the case most of the time in the case of genuine heart-to-heart connections. While miles might separate them, their hearts resonate with one another.

Scandals and thefts, sausages and cigarettes, an apology for order and music that expresses nothing. We talk about the composer Igor Stravinsky through quotes from «The Chronicle of My Life»

Author Yaroslav Timofeev

Igor Stravinsky is the only composer in history who has remained at the epicenter of cultural life for 60 years. He became a celebrity in 1910 when he wrote the ballet The Firebird for Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, and continued to create masterpieces in the late 1960s. As a child, he saw Tchaikovsky, in his old age he went to a personal audience with John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev. Stravinsky constantly changed styles and directions, but invariably remained a perfectionist — and therefore there are no two identical opuses in his legacy, just as there is not a single unsuccessful one.

BBC Music Magazine recently asked today’s music creators the question: «Who is the most influential composer in history?» Stravinsky took second place in the ranking, surpassing all his colleagues from the 19th and 20th centuries and only behind Bach. The source of this powerful influence on ears, minds and hearts lies primarily in Stravinsky’s music itself, but not only in it. His sharp, paradoxical and surgically accurate maxims also enlightened many minds, dispersing all over the world and becoming part of musical folklore. Stravinsky, in collaboration with his friend, writer and composer Walter Nouvel, wrote his first book in the first half of 1930s, calling it «Chronicle of my life». Here are 12 moments of this chronicle.

1. About the first musical impression

“A huge man sits at the end of a log. The sharp smell of resin and freshly cut wood tickles the nostrils. The man is wearing only a short red shirt. His bare legs are covered with red hair: he is shod in bast shoes. On the head is a mop of thick red hair; no gray hair — and it was an old man. He was mute, but he could click his tongue very loudly, and the children were afraid of him. Me too. However, curiosity still prevailed. We came closer, and then, to amuse the children, he began to sing. This chant consisted of only two syllables, the only ones he could ever utter. They were devoid of any meaning, but he chanted them with incredible dexterity and at a very fast pace. This clucking was accompanied by a peculiar accompaniment: he thrust his right palm under the armpit of his left hand and then, with a very quick movement, clapped his left hand on his right. At the same time, he managed to make a whole series of rather suspicious, but very rhythmic sounds, which, perhaps, could be called «smacking». This amused me to the point of madness, at home I began to diligently imitate him and became very interested in this occupation. Everything turned out so similar that I was forbidden to use such indecent accompaniment. Thus, only two tedious syllables remained to my lot, which, of course, lost all charm for me.

In the first flashback that Stravinsky’s memory preserved (or that he decided to present to us), there are almost all the keys to his aesthetics: uncut Russian folklore; theatricality; rhythm energy; speech freed from meaning, valuable as sound; combination of fear and delight; the joy of imitation. And, of course, the «rather suspicious» mixture of the sublime and the mundane, which Stravinsky adored to the end of his days.

It is felt that rural impressions were exotic for the composer: he spent most of his childhood in the capital and, like his friend George Balanchine George Balanchine Petersburger». Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, on Swiss Street, and grew up in a house on the Kryukov Canal, one minute walk from the Mariinsky Theater, where his father, the most authoritative Russian operatic bass of that era, served.

2. About Rimsky-Korsakov

“During this winter my poor teacher’s health failed. The frequent attacks of angina pectoris foreshadowed the near end. <...> I was very attached to him and sincerely loved him. It turns out that he answered me the same, but I learned about this only later from his relatives: with his characteristic restraint, all outpourings of feelings were alien to him.
Before my departure to the village, where I always spent my holidays, my wife and I went to say goodbye to him. This was our last meeting. <…>
When I returned to the village, I had an idea to honor the memory of my teacher. I wrote «The Funeral Song», which was performed under the baton of Felix Blumenfeld Felix Blumenfeld (1863–1931) — Russian conductor, pianist and composer. at the first Belyaev concert  A long-term series of concerts organized by philanthropist Mitrofan Belyaev in St. Petersburg. The first such concert took place in 1884, the last in 1918. dedicated to the memory of the great composer. Unfortunately, the score of this work was lost in Russia during the revolution, along with many other things I left behind. I forgot this music, but I remember well the idea behind it. It was like a procession of all the solo instruments of the orchestra, placing their melodies in turn in the form of a wreath on the teacher’s grave, against the background of a restrained trembling rumble, like the vibration of low voices singing in chorus. This thing made a strong impression both on the public and on myself. Whether this was caused by the general grief or the dignity of the work itself, it is not for me to judge.

Stravinsky’s upbringing of nobility assumed musical literacy, but he came late to professional composition studies. Regular lessons with Rimsky-Korsakov did not begin until 1904, when Stravinsky was twenty-two. The professor advised him not to enter the conservatory, so Stravinsky did not have a profile diploma until the end of his life  Perhaps the passion for self-education that Stravinsky retained all his life was some kind of psychological compensation for him .. But a private teacher — by the way, never took from him money — was the best in Russia. Stravinsky adopted a lot from Rimsky-Korsakov — from the essential features of style to the manner of composing at the piano, wearing an astrakhan fur coat and two pairs of glasses (he liked to keep the second high on his forehead). Death of a teacher 8 June 19The year 08 was a huge loss for Stravinsky — obviously more significant than the loss of the score of the «Funeral Song», although he mourned the latter all his life.

These notes were found almost half a century after Stravinsky’s death. In 2015, when the library of the St. Petersburg Conservatory was moving due to repairs, a set of parts was found in one of the dusty boxes — they managed to restore the score. The following year, the world’s best conductors competed for the right to perform the first performance of «The Funeral Song» in different countries, and now we have at our disposal several recordings of Stravinsky’s first memorial work. For example, the premiere of «The Funeral Song» by Stravinsky performed by the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Paul Phillips..

3. About the visit to the Wagner Festival

“…All the hotels are overcrowded. With great difficulty, we still managed to settle in the servants’ quarters. The performance I was present at now would not tempt me in any way, even if I were offered a room for free. Firstly, the whole atmosphere of the hall, its design and the audience itself seemed gloomy to me. It looked like a crematorium, and some very old-fashioned one, where a man in black was about to appear, whose duty it was to deliver a speech praising the dignity of the deceased. The fanfare called for concentration and listening, and the ceremony began. I shrank all over and sat motionless; after a quarter of an hour I became unbearable: my whole body was numb, I had to change position. Fuck! — the way it is! My chair creaked and hundreds of furious looks glared at me. I cringe again, but now I think only of one thing: the action would soon end and my torment would end. Finally the intermission comes and I am rewarded with a couple of sausages and a glass of beer. But before I have time to light a cigarette, the fanfare again calls me to concentrate and listen. One more action to take! And all my thoughts about cigarettes — I only managed to puff once! I will transfer this action too. Then — again a sausage, again a mug of beer, again a fanfare, again concentrate and listen to one more act — the last one. End!»

one composer. — was considered almost obligatory for every enlightened person. On August 19At the age of 12, Stravinsky ticked this box for himself, but he had no chance of catharsis, which the Wagnerians who had come from all over the world experienced in droves: already in his early years he realized that the magnet of the great operatic reformer repelled him. Dreams of cigarettes during «Parsifal», the most sublime Wagnerian creation, are a real insult to the feelings of believers, which Stravinsky allows himself with undisguised pleasure.

4. About self-restraint

“The need for restraint, self-imposed restraint, originates in the depths of our very nature and applies not only to the field of art, but to all conscious manifestations of human activity. This is the need for order, without which nothing can be created and with the disappearance of which everything falls apart.
And every order requires coercion. It would only be in vain to see this as a hindrance to freedom. On the contrary, restraint, restriction contribute to the flourishing of this freedom and only do not allow it to degenerate into outright licentiousness. In the same way, by borrowing a ready-made, consecrated form, the artist-creator is not in the least constrained by this in the manifestation of his individuality. I will say more: individuality stands out more clearly and acquires greater relief when it has to create within conditional and sharply defined boundaries.

Stravinsky loved boundaries, order, and hierarchy. His appetite was whetted, for example, by the task of writing music that, to the nearest second, would lie on the spiral of a gramophone record. When Balanchine asked him to compose an episode of the ballet “one or two minutes long”, Stravinsky was annoyed: “This is nonsense. I must know for sure. If a minute, it will be one music, if two, it will be completely different. Maybe it will be a minute and thirty seconds? S. Volkov. Passion for Tchaikovsky. Conversations with George Balanchine. M., 2004. He was ready to endure anything but chaos, and, feeling like a victim of the revolution, until the end of his days he kept tenderness for the monarchy. According to legend, during Stravinsky’s only visit to the USSR in the fall of 19For 62 years, a cheerful correspondent for a large-circulation magazine asked him what his hobby was. The composer refused, the reporter insisted, and in the end he heard: «Well, let’s say I love birds.» — «Oh, that’s fine, but what is your favorite bird?» — Double-headed eagle.

5. About «The Rite of Spring»

“I did not have the opportunity to judge the performance during the performance, as I left the hall after the very first bars of the introduction, which immediately caused laughter and mockery. It angered me. The cries, at first isolated, then merged into a general rumble. Those who disagreed with them protested, and very soon the noise became such that it was impossible to make out anything. Until the very end of the performance, I remained backstage next to Nijinsky. Vaclav Fomich Nijinsky (1889–1950) — Russian dancer and choreographer of Polish origin, dance innovator. One of the leading participants in the Russian Ballet of Diaghilev.. He stood on a chair and frantically shouted to the dancers: «sixteen, seventeen, eighteen …» (they had their own special account to beat the beats). The poor dancers, of course, did not hear anything because of the commotion in the hall and their own clatter. I had to hold Nijinsky by the dress: he was so furious that he was ready to rush onto the stage and make a scandal. Hoping that by doing this he would be able to stop the noise, Diaghilev gave orders to the illuminators to either turn on or turn off the lights in the hall. That’s all that remains in my memory from this premiere.

Premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring at the Champs-Elysées Theatre. 1913 British Library

The evening of 29 May 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées was the loudest premiere in the history of classical music. The revolution began right from the first sound of The Rite of Spring, played by a bassoon in a high register, which had never happened before in any symphonic score. Camille Saint-Saens Charles-Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) — French composer, pianist, organist, conductor, music writer and public figure. Hearing the first measure of the ballet at the dress rehearsal, he asked: «What instrument is this?» When he was informed that a bassoon was playing, the 77-year-old composer immediately left the hall. Sharp irregular rhythms, explosive climaxes, unpredictable development of the material — all this created the effect of an elemental primitive force that burst into the center of Paris. The «anti-dance» choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky trampled the ideals of classical ballet into the ground with the same energy. For the bourgeois French public, the novelty of The Rite of Spring was not only stunning, but insulting. “For the first time in 60 years, they dared to mock me,” lamented the Countess de Pourtales. “Shut up, girls of the sixteenth,” Diaghilev’s young supporters shouted to her and her friends, referring to the district of Paris where prostitutes lived. The scandal escalated into a fight and required the intervention of the police. Stravinsky was depressed, but the perceptive impresario Diaghilev rubbed his hands with pleasure. A year later, The Rite of Spring will be performed in Paris in a concert performance and will become an absolute triumph for Stravinsky. After a standing ovation, the audience will carry him in their arms — this is probably the last such case in the history of classical music. The discoveries made by Stravinsky in the score of The Rite of Spring will in one way or another resonate in the music of almost every notable composer of the 20th century.

6. About illness and Diaghilev

“I did not manage to see the next performances of The Rite of Spring and Khovanshchina: a few days after the premiere, I became seriously ill. I had typhoid fever and had to stay in the clinic for six weeks.
<…>
… I was surrounded by the most lively and touching participation of my friends. I was often visited by Debussy, de Falla, Ravel, Florent Schmitt, Casella   In this five are the greatest composers of that era: French (Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, somewhat less famous Florent Schmitt), Italian (Alfredo Casella) and Spanish (Manuel de Falla) .. Diaghilev came almost every day, but he was so afraid of getting infected that he did not dare to enter the ward. This fear of infection was almost pathological in him, and his friends constantly ridiculed him.

Sergei Diaghilev and Igor Stravinsky. Spain, 1921 Victoria & Albert Museum

On June 3, 1913, Stravinsky, having dined on oysters, discovered that he was unwell: he was soon diagnosed with typhus. On June 11, he was transferred to the Villa Borghese private sanatorium in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a suburb of Paris. The illness overtook him between two grandiose premieres of the Russian Seasons: The Rite of Spring overnight made Stravinsky the largest revolutionary composer on the planet, and Mussorgsky’s opera Khovanshchina with Stravinsky’s finale, shown on June 5, finally quarreled him with the domestic musical community. The opera, not finished by the author, was previously performed only in Rimsky-Korsakov’s version, which in St. Petersburg circles was considered a more sacred artifact than Mussorgsky’s music itself. With his work, Stravinsky, in the opinion of most of his Russian colleagues, challenged a teacher whose death had not even been five years. Thus, the illness marked a symbolic boundary between Stravinsky’s Russian spring and his European summer.

Sergei Diaghilev was subject to dozens of superstitions — from the most common to specific ones. The dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar recorded a story that was known to all of Diaghilev’s entourage — about a London fortune teller who predicted the impresario’s death on the water and thereby deprived the shipping companies of a valuable client for many years. When colleagues learned about the sudden death of Diaghilev in Venice, there were fewer convinced materialists in the troupe.

7. About music and time

“Music is the only area in which a person realizes the present. The imperfection of his nature is such that he is doomed to experience the fluidity of time, perceiving it in the categories of the past and the future and never being able to feel it as something real, and therefore stable, present. The phenomenon of music is given to us solely in order to bring order into everything that exists, including here, first of all, the relationship between man and time.

Stravinsky took the adjective in the phrase “present time” in the most direct sense. Based on the biblical commandment «do not worry about tomorrow», he lived the current moment to the fullest and embodied this acuteness of the existence of «here and now» in music. He ends his «Chronicle» with the words: «I live neither in the past nor in the future. I am in the present. I do not know what will happen tomorrow. For me, there is only the truth of today. This truth I am called to serve and serve it with full consciousness.”

8. About ideas

“I am reminded of a conversation between Mallarmé and Degas, heard from Paul Valéry. Once Degas, who, as you know, loved to write poetry, said to Mallarmé: “I can’t get the end of my sonnet. And this is not from a lack of ideas.” To which Mallarme meekly replied: “Ideas are not what sonnets are made of, they are made from words.”

Stravinsky freely retells an episode from Paul Valéry’s report Poetry and Abstract Thought. He also created his scores not from ideas, emotions or plots, but from musical intervals that he spent hours looking for at the piano and carefully selected. He called sound combinations suitable for work «building material». The next step was the distribution of elements, and this activity brought the «architect» perhaps the greatest pleasure. The main thing in music, according to Stravinsky, is form, and meanings and meanings are not within the competence of the composer.

Stravinsky liked the self-definition «artisan» more than «creator», but this does not mean that he was shy about solutions found in irrational ways, including Freudian ones. “One day, having worked until late at night, I went to bed, still tormented by one interval. I dreamed about this interval. It took the form of an elastic substance, stretched exactly between the two notes of my composition, but at each end, under the notes, there was an egg, a large egg. They were gelatinous to the touch (I touched them) and warm, in protective nests. I woke up with confidence that my interval was correct”  Stravinsky I.F. From dialogues with R. Kraft // Music and Modernity. Issue. 5. M., 1967..

9. About the portrait by Pablo Picasso

«From Naples I returned to Rome and spent a wonderful week with Lord Berners» Gerald Thirwitt-Wilson (1883-1950), known as Lord Berners, was a British aristocrat, composer, artist and writer.. After that, it was necessary to return to Switzerland and I will never forget the adventure that happened to me at the border in Chiasso. I was carrying with me my portrait, painted by Picasso not long before. When the military authorities began to inspect my luggage, they came across this drawing and did not want to miss it for anything. They asked me what it was, and when I said that it was my portrait, painted by one very famous artist, they didn’t believe me: “This is not a portrait, but a plan,” they said. “Yes, this is the plan of my face, and not anything else,” I assured. However, I failed to convince these gentlemen. All these wranglings took a lot of time, I missed my train, and I had to stay in Chiasso until the next morning. As for my portrait, I had to send it to the British Embassy in Rome in the name of Lord Berners, who subsequently forwarded it to me in Paris by diplomatic mail.

Pablo Picasso created a graphic portrait of Stravinsky in 1917 in Rome, a few days after they met. For anyone who has seen photos of Igor Fedorovich, the resemblance to the original is obvious, but the border guards can also be understood.

Stravinsky and Picasso are often compared as the pioneers of the 20th century in their countries: “The Spaniard Picasso in painting, the Russian Stravinsky in music, you see, the pillars of European art,” reported home from Paris at 1922 Vladimir Mayakovsky   V. V. Mayakovsky. Parisian essays // Soviet writers about France. L., 1985 .. They had a common child, beautifully built and with a happy fate — the ballet «Pulcinella», sketches for the scenery for which Picasso handed over to Diaghilev on the third attempt. As a result, all three — the impresario, the composer and the artist — were satisfied with the performance. For Stravinsky, Pulcinella turned out to be a rediscovery of himself (more on that in the commentary to the next quote), Picasso, after working on the ballet, regularly reproduced the Italian Petrushka mask on his canvases for several years.

10.

About the ballet Pulcinella

“I understood that, before embarking on this difficult task, I must give myself an answer to the main question that haunted me: what should prevail in my approach to Pergolesi  Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736) — Italian composer era of early classicism. — respect for his music or love for it? Is respect or love pushing us to possess a woman? Is it not by the power of love alone that we comprehend the whole depth of the human being? Besides, does love exclude respect? Only respect in itself is always fruitless and cannot become a creative force. Creativity needs dynamics, a certain engine, but is there an engine in the world more powerful than love?

Lyubov Chernysheva, Leonid Myasin and Vera Nemchinova in Pulcinella. 1920 E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection

Based on the music of Pergolesi, Stravinsky created the ballet Pulcinella, one of the stylistic opuses of neoclassicism. The original of the 18th century is subtly distorted in Stravinsky’s «distorted mirrors», but Igor Fedorovich states with satisfaction: «… what is remarkable in Pulcinella is not how much, but how little is added or changed there» — I. F. Stravinsky. Dialogues. Memories, reflections, comments. L., 1971. . Later it turned out that in the pile of manuscripts given by Diaghilev to Stravinsky for work, there was music not only by Pergolesi, but also by his little-known contemporaries. Stravinsky did not notice the difference.

11. About the theft of the score of «The Nightingale»

“In Vienna, I read in the newspapers that during one of the rehearsals of Toscanini Arturo Toscanini (1867–1957) was an Italian and American conductor. orchestral score The Nightingale The Nightingale is an opera by Stravinsky based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Stravinsky began composing the opera at 1908, The Nightingale premiered in Paris on May 26, 1914. mysteriously disappeared from the hall. Apparently, taking advantage of the fact that Toscanini was absent for a short time, she was kidnapped from the console, where a few minutes before this maestro passed her with the orchestra. Searches were immediately made, and finally the score was found in the shop of an antiquary who had just bought it from some unknown person. This incident, which caused great excitement at La Scala, was already over by the time I arrived in Milan.”

Becoming a victim of such a theft is probably the dream of any modern composer, alas, almost unattainable. Stravinsky is clearly pleased that one of the employees of La Scala coveted precisely his score — in addition, he himself was hungry for someone else’s. In his declining years, Igor Fedorovich formulated a self-revealing maxim: «Everything that interests me, everything that I love, I want to appropriate (maybe I’m just describing a rare form of kleptomania)» L. Andriessen, E. Schoenberger. Apollo clock. About Stravinsky. SPb., 2003. . In the early years, Stravinsky «stealed» the musical quotations he liked, in the neoclassical period — compositional models and techniques, in his later years he borrowed a whole system of composition — Arnold Schoenberg’s serial writing  Arnold Franz Walter Schoenberg (1874–1951) was an Austrian composer. The largest representative of musical expressionism, the creator of the serial technique of musical composition .. Of course, Stravinsky would not have issued a confession if he considered his crimes shameful: he needed someone else’s material to arouse the passion of a kleptomaniac, and through this passion — to create his own music, recognizable from the first notes.

12. About pure music

“Most people love music, hoping to find in it such feelings as joy, grief, sadness, or images of nature, or fantasy, or, finally, they simply want, listening to it, to forget the “prose of life”. They are looking for a medicine, an aphrodisiac in music… Music would be cheap if it were reduced to such a purpose! When people learn to love music for its own sake, when they listen to it differently, their enjoyment will be more sublime and full, then they will be able to judge it in a different way and really understand the inner essence of this art.

Igor Stravinsky conducting. 1962 © Arquivo Nacional (Brazil)

The ideal of “pure music” has been looming on the horizon of European art for more than a century, but, like any absolute, it is hardly achievable. Strictly speaking, when explaining how to listen to music, Stravinsky contradicts himself: his remark could be answered with the famous words of the composer Robert Schumann (“The best way to talk about music is to keep silent about it”), who, however, also said them. However, even a single attempt to tune your ear to the perception of «stravin» — without images, feelings and pictures — gives an amazing experience. “Music expresses nothing,” said Stravinsky, “except itself”  From the film “Igor Stravinsky”. Directed by Maria Solovtsova. TV channel «Culture». 2006. If we do not expect music to express our feelings, but allow it to express itself, it will tell us much more. At least if it’s Stravinsky’s music.

“From the image of a person in social networks, it is immediately clear what he is.” «Paper»

June 19, 2019

Paper and MegaFon are doing a special project on how the Internet and mobile communications affect the communication of St. Petersburg residents. Read how gadgets have changed, what it’s like to live without communication, and how residents of modern cities interact. We also conducted a survey on how St. Petersburg residents keep in touch with family, friends and colleagues.

MegaFon offers high-speed Internet, which allows you to instantly exchange data, chat or watch videos. The 4G network is available to subscribers in almost all regions of Russia.

How do social media pages form an opinion about a person, why is it important to observe etiquette in online communication and do spelling mistakes, ignored messages and old memes affect the impression of a friend or colleague?

Together with MegaFon Paper interviewed 826 readers and found out how they feel about other people’s online behavior. Why behavior in social networks can change the opinion of a person in real life — in eight arguments of survey participants.

In a questionnaire devoted to the communication of St. Petersburg residents over the phone and online, research department «Papers» asked whether the behavior of a friend, colleague or acquaintance online can affect the opinion about him in real life. Most of the readers — 80% — noted that they somehow form an attitude towards a person based on information about him received from social networks.

For example, many people say that social networks are a direct reflection of real communication, and the same rules apply there as offline.

“[In my life] it has never happened that an adequate person in personal communication behaved inappropriately in social networks. As a rule, if a person is strange, then on the page he has some kind of hell or an empty page.

“If this person is little known to me and I hardly communicated with him, his actions on the network — statements, entries on the page — will influence the formation of my idea of him. If this is my close friend, then his online behavior is unlikely to have a big impact on our communication, because, firstly, if it is something strange, then we will discuss it personally, and secondly, it can hardly be something that goes against my views.

Illustrations: Anna Kulakova / Paper

“I see no reason to separate communication into real and online. In any case, this is the communication of the same people according to the same rules. If something goes wrong and some of the participants feel uncomfortable, it doesn’t matter in what format of communication it happens: it means that there is a problem that is worth discussing.”

“Social networks have become such an integral part of life that it is immediately clear from the image of a person on the Internet what he is.”

According to readers «Papers» , on the Internet and in particular in social networks, people can behave and communicate more openly than in life, which can reveal both positive and negative aspects of their character.

“If a person is modest in everyday life, online he can reveal himself from an unexpected side – negative (rude, troll) or positive (singing, drawing).”

“On the Internet, people are usually bolder than in real life, which indicates a lot (for complexes, for example).”

«Internet pages and dialogues behind glass are extremely revealing and help in assessing the character of a person and his mess in the head.»

“Sometimes, after reading someone else’s Facebook page, I am unpleasantly surprised by the metamorphosis that happens to a nice acquaintance. In life, a normal person, on his page he is a super-liberal, or, conversely, a Stalinist, or a fighter for a healthy lifestyle, or a graphomaniac who floods the people with his poems. Or he churns out other people’s posts at a rate of one post in half an hour — and so every day. Social networks are a black hole, and often people just dump their madness there, not always realizing that they are actually being read — often by complete strangers.

The discrepancy between a person’s behavior online and offline for many readers is a reason to be wary or completely stop communicating with a person, since for them this indicates hypocrisy.

“Two-facedness is not a positive character trait. If a person behaves provocatively online, but usually in real life, then there is some problem.

“I won’t judge, but I don’t understand if a person actively shares what should remain private, or if his behavior on social networks will clearly contrast with his behavior in life.”

“I don’t like rudeness covered up by social media security. If a person cannot say a word in real life, but is a hero online, it repels me.”

Many readers noted that they pay attention to the values that a person transmits through social networks. If these views do not sharply coincide with the worldview of the informants, they lose confidence in such a person.

“At the very least, I will start to have less respect for a person if he posts all kinds of game, sexist jokes, posts about the microwave emitting black energy, and the like. Most often, if this happens, I turn the person off the tape.

“Posting hundreds of selfies or thousands of vacation photos, a bunch of reposts, stupid comments, publics he is a member of, and other things say a lot about a person. I don’t communicate with such people closely either in life or on the Internet. Friends have similar acquaintances — such as former classmates, classmates who are inconvenient to remove from friends.

“There was a moment when a respected teacher online behaved like an inadequate “quilted jacket”: this person ceased to be an authority for me.”

“In social networks, a person gives a picture of how he wants to look in my eyes. Misogyny, sexism, homophobia, racism, manifestation of religion, rabid patriotism — all these markers of non-handshake are perfectly manifested in social networks.

“Live communication is more meaningful, but [not if] 50 percent of the groups a person is in are porn, and you know for sure that a classmate does not write a term paper on them.

“If a person posts some wild things on the Internet: murders, Nazism, intolerance, and the like, it is unlikely that I will meet him in person.”

For many readers, a profile in social networks is a means by which you can find out the interests of a person, discover their similarity with your own. Sometimes this leads to a desire to communicate and get closer.

“In order to more or less get to know a person, you need to communicate with him for quite a long time. In social networks, you can see who his friends are, what kind of music he listens to and how he thinks in general (especially earlier, when VKontakte and other social networks were more active).

«One of the several ‘I’s» is the posts a person posts, the music they listen to, and the videos they watch.

“From the “interesting pages” tab, I can understand a lot about a person! His interests and subscriptions reveal 80% of him.”

“Perhaps I will become more open with a person and want to get closer if I realize that we have a lot in common or something hooked me in a good way. Or vice versa — I will become more careful in communication if something in groups, statements and audiovisual content of the page alerts me.

Research Department «Papers» also highlighted the remarks that relate to digital ethics. According to respondents, the manner of communication in social networks can determine further relationships in real life.

“If a person ignores messages or answers in monosyllables, the attitude can only get worse. And vice versa: if a lot of things can be discussed with a person online, then in life he becomes more interesting as an interlocutor.”

“If I see that a person is active in a social network, that is, he answers in a conversation, reposts posts, comments on them, but does not answer my message, then this person ceases to be included in the circle of trust.”

«If a person is online, but does not respond to my messages, this can cause a serious conflict.»

“The reason for minimizing live communication for me will be the obsessive stereotypical behavior of a person: for example, if he sends huge postcards to the wall in social networks, congratulates with poems on every holiday, including Orthodox holidays, since my environment is mostly aware that I am not a Christian, and it is important for me that this is taken into account in communication.

Work-related communication also often takes place in social networks. In this case, some formulate for themselves the principles of professional digital ethics.

“I pay attention to the observance of etiquette in working communication with customers: what time does a person write (3 a.m. on Saturday? I will answer in principle on Monday), how he formulates questions and tasks (I immediately understand from the text whether we can work with him ), is trying to send me an audio message (categorically I do not accept in work and always ask me to write the text).

“The level of literacy is very important. It is one thing to write to friends, ignoring the rules of the Russian language, and quite another when a colleague allows himself to speak in personal correspondence.

“If this is a correspondence for work, and a person writes “um”, “pff”, “hey”, it is more difficult to perceive him as an adequate employee when meeting.

Literacy is important for many in online communication — illiterate speech most often leaves an imprint on the impression of a person, and this is not only about unintentional mistakes, but also about those cases when a person, for example, deliberately skips punctuation marks.

«Stylistic, punctuation and spelling (unintentional) errors are very annoying — most likely, a person will be annoying.»

“The level of his literacy, the memes he uses in communication, the frequency of using capslock/ellipsis — all this affects perception. If in business correspondence a person allows himself to WRITE like this, it looks strange. If a person drops memes that are already outdated and not witty, you feel awkward.”

«If a person wrote messages illiterately, it does not change the communication process itself, but it is remembered.»

«Grammar errors can kill the impression.»

We’re completely wrong in apologizing. So how should it be?

Scholars apologize for being completely confused with the study of apologies. New discoveries in this area are extremely rare, because it is very difficult to properly organize such a study — about as difficult as determining whether a woodpecker has a headache.

Cindy Frantz, a psychologist at Oberlin College (Ohio, USA), is still trying. «I once tried to do a study in a lab where someone would do something wrong — something that I would like to apologize for,» she says.

«But the logistics turned out to be very difficult — for ethical reasons. You cannot force a person to do something terrible, requiring immediate and sincere repentance, in a laboratory.»

  • «Sorry for the bad example.» Dad hit a woman on the arm and then apologized
  • The creators of «South Park» mockingly apologized to the Chinese authorities
  • Justin Trudeau: «I don’t remember how many times I wore dark makeup»
  • For what and to whom the journalists had to apologize

Most scientists resorts to hypothetical questions («Imagine Sam just ran his car over your leg») or invokes memories that are notoriously biased and unreliable («Tell me how you apologized to your mother»). In addition, our cultural differences confuse things even more.

However, there is an oasis in the scorched wilderness of apology research. For about 20 years, Yosuke Otsubo, a psychologist at the University of Kobe in Japan, has studied how people apologize around the world, and late last year published the fifth of six papers in which he added essential instructions for those who want to learn how to apologize sincerely and effectively.

That’s the main thing.

When you ask for forgiveness, it is best to pay for your guilt with a very expensive gift, to sacrifice something dear to you.

For example, a corporation that has done wrong to its customers may give them expensive gift certificates as a token of remorse, or an individual may try to make amends by canceling an important trip (“I canceled all my plans for this weekend and spent Saturday with you»).

Of course, the idea of gifts for the sake of forgiveness is as old as the world. However, the original contribution of Yosuke Otsubo and the essence of his discovery is that the gift should not be aimed at enriching the recipient at all.

«My research has shown that the main thing that matters is the price for the abuser,» he says. In other words, the gift must hurt the person who gives it.

Otsubo’s work demonstrates that this is true for groups as well as individuals, for both public and private apologies, in countries as diverse as the US, South Korea, the Netherlands, Indonesia, Chile, Japan, and China.

He gives an example: popular Japanese singer Minami Minegishi apologized to her fans for her behavior that violated her contract (prohibition of relationships with young people) by shaving her head baldly and showing how dear her career and relationships with fans are. At the same time, she stressed that she would never again do anything that would harm this relationship.

For those of us who are used to beating around the bush and mumbling «well, I’m sorry, you know how it happened, I didn’t mean it at all . ..», this is a real conceptual shift: the purpose of an apology is not to say «I’m sorry» and explain your past behavior, but to show how much you value the relationship and the lesson learned.

At the same time, you must convincingly promise that bad behavior on your part will never happen again (and your gift cost you too much to resort to such apologies again).

Restoring self-respect

Aside from gifts, the rest of the rules for apologizing are pretty simple and straightforward, says Amy Ebesu Hubbard, dean of the Department of Communications at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (USA): accept responsibility for what you did, for the harm and suffering caused by your act, promise to behave well in the future, offer immediate remedial action, and demonstrate sincerity of remorse.

The words «I’m sorry» and «I apologize» must be heard, although not all of the listed components are necessary in case of minor transgressions.

Revisiting a blunder and analyzing it while apologizing is highly undesirable as it only reinforces the offended circumstance of what happened

Another recent study published in the American Marketing Association Journal of Marketing, an interesting point is added: start with «thank you for …», especially when it comes to not very serious cases.

«Instead of saying «sorry for the long wait,» say «thank you for your understanding» or «thank you for your patience» first, says study lead author Xiaoyang Deng, associate professor of marketing at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business ( United States), who conducted seven studies on the behavior of American and Chinese students and Amazon employees in situations involving missed appointments and poor service in restaurants and shopping.

«Showing how much you appreciate your customers who have been affected by your actions, you increase their self-esteem. Which, in turn, leads to increased satisfaction with the situation.»

In addition, she recommends not going back to the details of the blunder, as this will only reinforce it in the memory of offended people. Instead, just unconditionally admit your mistake.

As a rule of thumb, gratitude and apology work best in tandem, says Cindy Franz.

«Feeling highly valued by others is a key psychological need, and your gratitude will help repair the self-esteem damaged by your act,» she emphasizes.

«Gratitude restores self-respect, and apology shows how you intend to behave in the future.»

Japanese apologies: eyes on the floor

These recommendations are supported by the work of Alison Wood Brooks, assistant professor of business management at Harvard Business School. She (along with a colleague) is currently immersed in a veritable treasure trove of apologies — the archives of parole hearings for crimes ranging from speeding to murder.

She has found that apologies with promises of good future behavior are more effective. But an apology that includes an explanation of why a violation or a crime was committed does not have such a result.

For example, members of the parole board do not like to be told, «I was driving drunk because I was very tired and wanted to leave quickly. I take full responsibility for this wrong decision.»

Here’s what they want to hear: «I plan to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice a week and go to the gym on Sundays.»

According to Brooks, her research suggests that explaining and making excuses for past wrongdoing should be avoided.

Choosing the right time is important. Still eagerly cited, Cindy Franz’s study bears the telling title «Better late than early»: don’t apologize too quickly, it won’t work, it notes.

«The purpose of an apology is to help the victim of your act feel heard and understood, and to convince the perpetrator that he will not do it again,» says Franz. speak out, they won’t give you anything.»

The sincerity of the apologetic

Apology experts are very interesting to talk to because they perceive everything that happens in the world as a series of apologies, although sometimes they cannot remember the details of the wrongs caused.

Yosuke Otsubo, a psychologist at Kobe University, believes that the best way to apologize is to pay for your guilt with a gift that will cost the giver dearly

All my interlocutors agree that public apologies that are not addressed specifically to the person who is offended are completely useless. And those — 9eight%.

A classic example is a politician caught cheating on his wife. Such a politician usually makes a public apology to his constituents, and only then, inside these apologies, along the way, asks for forgiveness from the deceived wife.

«It looks a little strange,» says Ebesu Hubbard, emphasizing that outsiders and those to whom an apology is addressed may perceive the level of sincerity of the apologizer quite differently.

«The most important thing is whether the one to whom the apology is made recognizes their sincerity.» What others think is irrelevant.

She praises Kentucky Gov. Andy Basher, who in late April called a man who registered for unemployment benefits under the name of famous rapper Tupac Shakur a scammer. It turned out, however, that this is a real name, and the Kentuckian, the full namesake of the late rapper, was offended.

«Then Basher did everything right when you want to apologize properly,» emphasizes Ebesu Hubbard.

First, he called Shakur to ask for forgiveness in person, then publicly stated that he had offended a person, fully admitted his guilt and — most importantly — praised the generosity of the real Tupac Shakur.

However, an example of a corporate apology is the actions of the KFC chain in 2018, says Edwin Battistella, author of «I’m sorry about it.» The language of public apology.»

Faced with the problem of delivering chicken to its restaurants, KFC published an apology to customers in newspapers, in which the letters on the familiar logo were swapped — «FCK».

In addition, on Twitter, the company wrote : «The chicken crossed the road, but did not enter our restaurant,» which provoked a flurry of humorous comments.0003

«They did a great job,» says Battistella. «They managed to play a trick on themselves.»

„There is nothing original. Steal anything that inspires you or gives you imagination. Grab old movies, new movies, music, books, paintings, photographs, poetry, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, road signs, trees, clouds, water, light and shadows. For robbery, choose only what directly touches your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is not valuable; originality does not exist. „Be last. Walk the world as if you don’t exist. Don’t be competent, don’t try to prove your worth — it’s not necessary. Stay useless and enjoy. You judge people by their usefulness. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t do anything useful. Do useful things, but remember that the real and greatest experience of life and ecstasy comes from doing the useless. It comes through poetry, painting, love, meditation. The greatest joy will fill you only if you are able to make something that cannot be reduced to a commodity. The reward is spiritual, internal, it is manifested by energy. So, if you feel useless, don’t worry. You can become a huge tree with a big crown. And people who have entered into useful activity… they need to rest in the shade sometimes.”

an idea that belongs to a person only as long as he keeps it to himself; but as soon as it is announced, it becomes public property, and the one who gets it can no longer separate himself from it. And the one who inherited my idea from me perceives it himself, without belittling me; not a shadow, but a reflection of light, he casts on me. Ideas should be freely transmitted from one to another throughout the globe for the moral and mutual instruction of man and the improvement of his condition, it seems to have been deliberately favorably conceived by nature when she made them spread like fire throughout space without reducing their density at any point. , and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical existence, and which cannot be limited or exclusive property. About beauty, About mistakes

“Friendship in the abode has not yet given me this consolation,
I don’t know such a heart in which the truth would live!
It would be better to stand aside from a bunch of hypocritical friends,
These unnecessary acquaintances are enough to support me!
Friends do not then fuss that your share is close to them:
They demand their share and are looking for a sweet piece.
They seek your support when you are healthy and rich, —
And on your black day they run away and do not look straight in the eye.
If wealth decreases, love will immediately decrease,
If you don’t want to be despised, prepare dinars, dinars!
Your friends have done harm to you, caring for their own benefit, —
Expecting praise from them, dispel your strength for them.
You are merry while you are in power — the years pass easily,
But need will force anyone to become restless, gloomy!
In vain are you looking for reliable, mail-like friends:
No one can untie your tangled web!
Neither in the cold nor in the heat — you remember — friends are no good. They are
They do not tolerate the cold wind, they will be saved from the heat in the shade.
But a sage calls a friend who has been tested more than once,
Who will not leave a friend anywhere, neither in a bitter hour, nor in a joyful hour,
He will calm him down with support, and keep his secret,
And serve as a support for his friend’s sorrows and insults!
Who has girded himself forever with the cherished belt of friendship,
Who has not languished with the happiness of friends, has not cut him under the root.
He wishes life to the living, gives his strength to his friends,
He does not deceive his soul: what he feels, he says.
A friend is a pure mirror of a friend, they are mirrors to each other,
Mutually friends reflect hearts, and dreams, and deeds.
A wise man does not seek reciprocity of kindness and friendship from a fool:
Their thoughts will not meet anywhere, their hearts will never sing.
One is incomprehensible to the other, which means always and everywhere
One is unpleasant to the other — like fire and water!
Only a fool is good for a fool, but friendship will not go well:
They will begin to quarrel for no reason. — one on another weaves!
Two wise people, on the other hand, are quite suitable for friendship.
They will entrust wonderful secrets to each other in silence!
They will not offend each other in any way — therefore they are eternally friendly.
They do not need lies, foul language, stupidity, nonsense.
And remember well where enmity comes from.
From idle, stupid mockery, which is alien to friendship.
Hold your tongue, sometimes being impatient with evil,
Do not slip, do not make empty witticisms your trade!
You yourself hit your own skinny legs with an ax,
And when you expose your leg to your friends, you will expose your neck to your enemies.
Do you see with your inner eye — the face of the one does not shine,
Who lies or in vain scoffs and blasphemes his friend!
But the slanderer, the mockingbird, is not at all in the honor of people:
Even if he has not committed crimes, in my opinion, he is still a villain!
Even if you are a king, and mockery will dishonor you, laughing,
Even though you were high for a month, it will plunge you into mud in the square!
The soul aspires to perfection, to mockery — a sly tongue,
And everyone is accustomed to both, not being firm.
The mind is proud of knowledge, having accepted the high word,
When he proudly disdains vainglory, lies — he is right!
I will wither away, my soul dies, busy with idleness;
Her daily torture is mockery, lies, vanity. ..
The soul, enlivened by the truth, plays, breathing freely,
A person’s disposition becomes beautiful and sweet, like a soul!
Give up violence and take justice as your friend,
And those who are not afraid of unjust judgment are savages.
You need someone else’s prosperity, you don’t see consolation in anything else…
How long will you revel in violence with black wine.
What kind of good will you take from this fragile abode?
If you liked the silk shroud, the canvas one is not good for you.
You, if you are not ashamed of others, be ashamed of yourself:
Non-humans are shameless dogs, unable to look up!”

Forever despicable slaves who, for their dark purposes, have always used foreign forces to satisfy their impotent malice and to destroy their «enemies» among their compatriots! No less disgusting, however, are the nationalists, who are such only in name. As creatures possessing a bazaar morality, in their egoism they have sunk to the bestial level. Acquaintances, friends, relatives — no one will open the door to such, even if he, with the cross of the Nazarene on his back and in a wreath of thorns on his bloodied forehead, seeks refuge with them. They forgot, everyone forgot that only thanks to my efforts they did not suffer the fate of the Jews, and for four years they only got richer and richer. Those who only yesterday were looking for your gaze and greeting, today they are running from your name alone, even from your shadow. The Reds are waiting for me: a hundred times low is he who, under all circumstances, prefers life to death. Let the inevitable happen! About the Light

„When it was already getting hot, but our ladies had not yet come out for tea, I often went to the garden or garden to eat all those vegetables and fruits that were ripe. And this occupation gave me one of the main pleasures. You used to climb into an apple orchard, into the very middle of a tall, overgrown, dense raspberry. Overhead is a bright hot sky, all around is the pale green prickly green of raspberry bushes mixed with weeds. Dark green nettle with a thin flowering top stretches gracefully upwards; a sprawling burdock with unnaturally lilac spiky flowers grows roughly higher than raspberries and higher than the head, and in some places, together with nettles, it even reaches the spreading pale green branches of old apple trees, on which, at the top, pointing to the hot sun, glossy, like stones, round, still ripen. raw apples. Below, a young raspberry bush, almost dry, without leaves, twisted, reaches for the sun; green needle grass and young burdock, breaking through the last year’s leaf, moistened with dew, turn juicy green in the eternal shade, as if they do not know how the sun plays brightly on the leaves of the apple tree. 0003

„All objects visible to the eye and touched by the hands became empty, light and transparent — they became like bright shadows in the darkness of the night; for that great darkness that envelops the entire universe was not dispersed by the sun, the moon, or the stars, but covered the earth with a boundless black veil, like a mother, hugged her; it penetrated into all bodies, into iron and stone, and the particles of the body that had lost their connection became lonely; and it penetrated into the depths of the particles, and the particles of the particles became lonely; for that great emptiness that embraces the universe was not filled with the visible, neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars, but reigned boundlessly, penetrating everywhere, separating everything: body from body, particles from particles; trees spread their roots in the void and were themselves empty; in the void, threatening with a phantom fall, rose temples, palaces and houses, and were themselves empty; and in the void a man moved restlessly, and he himself was empty and light, like a shadow; for there was no time, and the beginning of each thing drew near to its end: the building was still being built, and the builders were still knocking with hammers, and already its ruins and emptiness were seen in the place of the ruins; as soon as a man was born, and funeral candles were lit over his head, and they were already extinguished, and already emptiness stood in the place of a man and funeral candles; and, embraced by emptiness and darkness, man hopelessly trembled before the horror of the infinite.

About the sun

„Morning. Mom is home alone. Immersed in incoherent, dreary thoughts, she walks from room to room. Her shadow was outlined on the white door, vague in the scattered rays of the foggy sun. Mom stopped at the door and raised her hand in a wide, strange motion. The shadow on the door hesitated and whispered something familiar and sad. A strange joy overflowed in Yevgenia Stepanovna’s soul, and she moved both hands, standing in front of the door, smiling a wild smile and watching the flickering shadow. Praskovya’s steps were heard, and Yevgenia Stepanovna remembered that she was doing something ridiculous. Again, she is scared and sad. “We need to change the place,” she thinks. “

“Listen, at night the body acquires complete freedom, which it lacks so much during the day. People, objects — everything falls into a dream. Look around — these walls are sleeping. The nightstand sleeps, the door sleeps. Window panes — and they fell asleep. And falling asleep, covered with invisible cracks. These cracks are so wide that climbing through them will not be difficult. You can walk through a wall without even disturbing it. Tell me, what do you think the night is? Night is harmony. At night, everything exists in peace and harmony, and during the day, remember how cruelly the light fights with the shadow. No-no. At night it’s different. After sunset, the night that was born in the house leaves its native walls and takes the street night under its arm, because both of them are one and the same, and there are no differences between them. The night air is teeming with secret conspirators—hate colluding with love, pain with joy. They hold tightly to each other, and it must be not without reason that in the darkness of the night the killer of a young woman feels special tenderness for his victim … «

“Faith without a shadow of a doubt is like a human body, in which there are no antibodies. People who carelessly go through life, too busy or indifferent to ask the hard questions about why they believe this way and not otherwise, usually find themselves defenseless in the face of tragedy or the inquisitive questions of an intelligent skeptic. A person’s faith can be destroyed overnight if he has never had the patience to listen to his own doubts — the very ones that should be brushed aside only after much thought. «

I am not made to be a demagogue — although I could easily become one — I am a soldier accustomed to receiving and giving orders without a hint of politics, and this is possible only in relation to an organized and mechanical mass. For ten days I have been occupied with politics and I feel a deep disgust for it, for my politics is the command of an authority that can command me. But it was not there these days, and I had to engage in politics and manage a disorganized hysterical crowd in order to bring it back to normal and suppress the instincts and desire for primitive anarchy. About men, about strength, about power

«The Lutherans say: «Why should we ask the prayers of the saints for ourselves? We ask God Himself,” and they refute themselves: for why do they ask the pastor to pray for themselves? We would pray without a pastor, if everyone has the same access to God and there is no need for consecrated prayer books for us. What blindness! — They say: praying to the saints, we are idolatry. Not true. We do not honor a single saint for God, we do not pray to a single saint as God, but only ask his prayers for ourselves; Is there even a shadow of idolatry here? Just as we ask living clergymen and prayer books for us before God to pray for us, so we also ask heavenly prayer books, who, out of their love for God, have great boldness before Him; moreover, very many of them here on earth were prayer books and intercessors before God for the world; there, in heaven, this activity of theirs only continues, has large dimensions and is especially strong, for it is not lifted up by heavy and inert flesh.”

All the saints, although they have finished their earthly career, but they are alive: God does not bear the dead, but the living: all to Him live the essence (Luke 20:38).

About God, About the world

“Nights are like people: they become interesting far from immediately. Around midnight they reach maturity, at two they come of age; from two to half past three is their finest hour, but already at half past three they begin to wane, and by four in the morning only a pale shadow remains of them. Their death is terrible… In fact, what could be more terrible than dawn, when the bottles are empty and the guests look like drowned people…”

About death, About men, About the night

About the world

“To portray one good, bright, gratifying thing in human nature means to conceal the truth… It is impossible to depict light without shadows.”

About nature, About light

«The operation changed my life.» Juno star Elliot Page has had a sex change to become a man. What did he have to go through? life, hardships experienced and how his condition changed after the operation.

Lenta.ru gives the most vivid details from these stories, and also explains why the Hollywood star, who in the blink of an eye became the most famous trans person in the world, decided to tell fans in detail about such a personal and, as it turned out, extremely painful topic.

«No, you’re not a boy»

As a child, Elliot Page was sure he was a boy. “One hundred percent. I knew I was a boy from the very beginning. I wrote love letters to non-existent people and signed myself Jason. I could not digest the fact that they told me: no, you are not a boy, and when you grow up, you will not be either, ”the actor shared in an interview with Vanity Fair.

In an interview with TV presenter Oprah Winfrey, Page admitted that he recalls all the moments of childhood when he managed to do something “boyish”, with incredible warmth — the artist calls this state “gender euphoria”: “I remember being at my house friend Tim, they put an inflatable pool in the backyard. I didn’t have a bathing suit and was allowed to put on a boy’s swimming trunks. And I was just incredibly happy with life. So happy! Just because seeing yourself in a bathing suit has always been uncomfortable to wear. So — yes, I will never forget this moment, and all those moments of my childhood when I managed to be who I am.

Over time, however, young Page became more and more gendered: if before adolescence, the fact that he spends more time in the company of boys was simply turned a blind eye, then during puberty it suddenly became a problem for others. Page describes this time as «a living hell»: «I was teased, I was constantly incredibly uncomfortable in my body, I did not feel connected to it.»

Page made his film debut in 1997, starring in the film and sequel series Pit Pony at the age of ten. Acting quickly became his passion, but for this job he had to make compromises. “Of course, I had to look a certain way,” he explained in an interview with Time magazine.

Every day I went to the set and put on women’s clothes, I was sick of it

A small project was followed by a series of others, and then the first big role in the film about the youth cult «Face to Face» in 2004, for filming in which, among other things, he had to shave his head. «Face to Face» was followed by the main role in the thriller about revenge on pedophiles «Lollipop», he even appeared in a minor role in the action movie «X-Men: The Last Stand», but world fame — completely, by the way, unexpectedly — came to the actor thanks to a small indie film Juno. For the role of a pregnant teenage girl who decided to give her child to a wealthy family instead of an abortion, 21-year-old Page was nominated for an Oscar. The actor, however, was not at all ready for world fame.

“The film suddenly became a big hit and I became quite famous. But I felt that I could hardly express the level of pain I felt. For example, after the Oscars, I couldn’t look at the red carpet photos (crying) . I understand that people can watch this and say: “God, this man is whining about the night at the Oscars…” Page confessed in a video interview with Oprah Winfrey.

I didn’t recognize myself. For a long time I couldn’t even look at my photos

The constant attention of the press and the public, coupled with the gender norms that Page had to conform to for the sake of his career, literally ate him from the inside: «At some moments I felt that I almost did not exist. »

The actor describes his state in the most stellar period as close to depression, while Page unconsciously drove away reflections on the roots of these negative experiences. “There were days when I did not want to leave the apartment, it was very difficult to communicate with people. It was even hard to read the script in a day. And you don’t understand why, you don’t understand how to express it. I see why it can be extremely incomprehensible to other people who have never heard this white noise, ”he admitted to Oprah.

And there was almost no time left for reflection: the success of «Juno» paved the way for Page to Hollywood, and the artist was bombarded with offers to star. He starred in Drew Barrymore’s sports film debut Roll On! and then appeared in Christopher Nolan’s star-packed Inception. The first big-budget blockbuster was a real test for Page, not so much during filming, but during press screenings and advertising campaigns.

“There were many premieres around the world, I wore dresses and heels to every event. I remember how we were at the premiere in Paris, just dealt with the press and went to the show … My assistant — who for me is part of the family, supported me very much — she was convinced that she was helping me out, doing the right things, contributing to the development of my career forcing me to wear dresses and heels. She said, «I have a surprise for you.» I had already chosen a dress for the event, and she showed me three new ones, and I exploded. It was like a scene from a movie. That night, after the premiere, at the after party, I just broke down. And this often happened to me, often in conjunction with panic attacks, ”Page shared.

«Why does this little beauty dress like a man?»

A few years later, Page starred in another blockbuster — X-Men: Days of Future Past. Shortly before the film was released, he made his first coming out: he spoke at a conference organized by the Campaign for Human Rights in support of LGBT youth and admitted from the stage that he likes girls. Page for a long time was afraid to tell the public about this, feeling that because of his career, coming out was impossible for him — he would just take it and destroy everything.

“Here I am, an actress representing, in a sense, an industry that sets unattainable standards for us. Not just for the young, for everyone. Standards of beauty, good life, success. Standards that influenced me too. You are given other people’s ideas, thoughts that you didn’t have before, they tell you how you should behave, how to dress and who to be. And I tried to fight, to be real, to follow my heart … but it can be very hard, ”Page said at the conference.

In his speech, the artist also admitted how much tabloid articles that discuss his appearance or personal life hurt him. He emphasized that these small and insignificant, but extremely toxic and painful moments can gradually destroy a person day by day: “I try not to read rumors about myself, but recently an article appeared on one site about me with a photo in which I am in sweatpants. I go to the gym. And the author wondered: “Why does this little beauty persistently continue to dress like a hefty man?” Because I like to feel comfortable.”

“Masculinity and femininity are surrounded by widespread stereotypes that determine how we should all act, dress, talk, but they do not benefit anyone. Anyone who challenges the so-called norms becomes the object of discussion. And the LGBT community knows this better than anyone, ”Page emphasized.

After coming out, the actor turned to LGBT activism, and was finally able to appear in public with his lover, artist Samantha Thomas: “I felt much better after that. I was extremely squeezed all my 20s, and here for the first time I was able to show my love in public, discuss partners on the set. But the discomfort in my body has not gone away.”

“You have to fuck her so that she realizes that she is a lesbian”

Years later, the artist stated that a very painful experience on the set preceded the voluntary confession of homosexuality. While working on X-Men: The Last Stand, director Brett Ratner allegedly encouraged another woman to have sex with Page. “You need to fuck her so that she finally understands that she is a lesbian,” Paige quoted the cinematographer in 2017. Ratner also announced the orientation of the actor to the entire film crew, despite the fact that Page, although he felt his craving for women, never expressed it. “It was violence. This man who chose me to star in the film started our work with a terrible statement. He announced my orientation without any concern about my condition, and I regard this action as homophobic, ”Page wrote on Facebook.

All this time the actor suspected that he was a trans man, but as soon as he approached this revelation, he immediately drove it away: “I remember reading the book Redefining Realness [by the trans woman Janet Mokk] and realized: I am a trans «.

But then I kind of pushed that thought away. I just wasn’t ready for it.

After the first coming out, Page began to appear on the red carpet and various social events exclusively in men’s suits, and also made such wardrobe a mandatory requirement for film roles. In 2017, he broke up with artist Thomas, and a year later he married dancer Emma Portner. The actor appeared in one of the main roles in the hit TV series The Umbrella Academy, and then the coronavirus pandemic came, which turned out to be fateful for Page.

“I have time to be alone with myself. It was, of course, a privilege — I did not work during the pandemic. I think distancing myself from the world for a short period helped me realize certain facets of myself that I had never allowed myself to do before. Perhaps, to some extent, he did not allow it on purpose, albeit unconsciously, ”he admitted to Oprah Winfrey.

“I’m afraid of a possible invasion of my life”

During the lockdown, Page decided to separate from his wife (they, according to him, maintain friendly relations). At the end of 2020, the actor published a post on Twitter in which he again came out, stating that his name was not Ellen, but Elliot Page.

“Hi friends, I want to tell you that I am transgender and my pronouns are he/they and my first name is Elliot. I am very fortunate that I am writing this, that I am here, that I have reached this point in my life. I feel incredibly grateful to the people who have supported me on this journey. I can’t express how wonderful it feels to love yourself enough to strive to be your true self. I am endlessly inspired by people from the trans community. Thank you for your courage, generosity and work to make the world more inclusive and empathetic. I will give you all the help I can and continue to fight for a more loving and equal society,” the post said.

I also ask for your patience. My joy is real but fragile. Even though I’m incredibly happy knowing how many privileges I have, I’m also scared. Scared of possible intrusion into my life, hatred, «jokes» against me, violence

Page’s coming out instantly made him the most famous trans person in the world. Within a day, his Instagram followers increased by half a million, and his name was trending on Twitter in dozens of countries. The artist received support from all sides: Netflix changed his name in the credits for The Umbrella Academy (as well as all other films and series with him) from Ellen to Elliot, the same thing subsequently happened on Wikipedia, IMDb and Kinopoisk. .

After the unexpected announcement, Page disappeared from social networks for several months, and then began to actively distribute interviews — the artist’s coming out fell on the aggressive anti-transgender policy that American conservatives began to pursue. Page decided to draw as much attention to this issue as possible, and therefore made his transition public. He gave interviews to Time and Vanity Fair magazines, talked via video link with Oprah Winfrey, talking about the intricacies of his transformations and experiences.

In particular, the actor told reporters about the breast removal operation (“She completely changed my life”), and later shared a photo with a naked torso on Instagram.

Everything is very new to me. I’m just getting used to my body, even the haircut is unusual for me. I can look in the mirror and rejoice in what I see

Comparing his current state with the past, Elliot in all interviews emphasizes a previously unknown unity with his own body. “The main difference now is that I now truly exist. I can be alone with myself without problems, be productive, be creative. In simple terms, I feel comfortable. I feel a huge difference in my condition, in the fact that I can exist. I am here and now even in communication with other people, I can be relaxed, and I am not tormented by anxiety, ”he explained in an interview with Vanity Fair.

But the most probably emotional confession came from the actor in an interview with Oprah: there are insignificant things, the toxicity and pain of which destroys a person a little every day, but equally small moments can, as it turned out, give an incredible craving for life:

What brought me the most joy? Most joy… When you get out of the shower with a towel around your waist, you look at yourself in the mirror and think: “Here I am.” And there is no panic, there are no these moments that I experienced earlier just from wearing a T-shirt … When you can touch your chest and feel comfortable in your own body, perhaps for the first time in your life .
